Govt’s five-year housing plan to drive homeownership, economic empowerment, & sustainable communities

THE government’s housing programme is not just about building homes; it is also a key driver of economic empowerment, providing opportunities for youth, women, men, and skilled workers across the country.

During a video address on Saturday via his Facebook page, Minister of Housing Collin Croal emphasised that the five-year strategy links homeownership, construction projects, and infrastructure development to enhance livelihoods and foster community growth.

“The housing programme continues to remain a pillar of economic empowerment.

This has always been so under every People’s Progressive Party/Civic government,” Croal said, stressing that advancing citizens toward homeownership remains central to the government’s mandate. He reflected on President Dr Irfaan Ali’s address to the nation on December 17, highlighting the administration’s commitment to social and economic transformation over the next five years.

Central to the programme is addressing the backlog of pending housing applicants.

Croal revealed that, while more than 53,000 allocations were made over the last five

years, there are still over 78,000 pending applicants, with the largest block—over 52,000—located in Region Four.

While the backlog in Region Four cannot be fully cleared immediately, Croal assured that all other regions will see 100 percent clearance. Additional land is being acquired in partnership with agencies such as the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission, the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited, and the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo).

He noted that the construction of new homes is a cornerstone of the programme, with the government targeting a minimum of 40,000 houses over five years, averaging 8,000 annually.

Croal highlighted a shift to modular housing to increase volume and efficiency.

“We received over 268 responses for the construction of modular houses. So, we can have volume.”

According to him, housing will cater to all income levels, including low-income households, moderate and middle-income groups, and young professionals, reflecting the rising demand among those with higher disposable incomes. Croal also emphasised the economic benefits

of construction, noting that the sector provides ample employment opportunities.

“In fact, we still have a demand for skilled workers for the construction sector. Anyone who is a very skilled

citizens by providing them with their own land, personal space, and security of tenure.

The minister disclosed that certificates of title are being processed aggressively, with over 25,000 titles

or transports issued over the past five years, allowing citizens to use their property as collateral for loans or business expansion. Financial support for home construction and upgrades will continue through initiatives like the steel and cement programme, which has disbursed over $750 million in recent years.

Croal noted that Budget 2026 will expand assistance programmes targeting home completion and upgrades, particularly for those demon-

strating financial need. The housing programme also prioritises youth and women.

Croal reported that “54 per cent of allocations in the last period were to young people under 35,” signalling opportunities for homeownership at an earlier age than previous generations.

Women, particularly single mothers, are also benefitting, with over 43 per cent of allocations going to females.

He stated, “Empowerment of our women…earning on their own allows them to manage their affairs on their own.”

Minister Croal explained that programmes like the Homestead Project at Yarrowkabra, which will construct over 250 houses, include economic components such as shade house projects to enable additional income generation.

Hinterland communities are included in the housing programme, with over 400 homes already constructed in Regions One, Seven, Eight, and Nine. Croal emphasised that expansion will mirror the development along the coastline, providing both financial and material support to hinterland families.

Community development forms a key part of the fiveyear plan. Croal highlighted the government’s commitment to creating safe, clean, and well-lit communities

with proper drainage, reduced noise pollution, green spaces, and functional recreational facilities.

According to him, infrastructure improvements, including roads, drainage systems, and utility networks, will accompany new housing developments to ensure a high quality of life.

“Infrastructure is part of the backbone of economic expansion. Whether construction of homes or the development of new housing areas, everyone benefits, including the transportation sector, hardware suppliers, aggregate suppliers, and even those selling snacks or meals to the workers,” Croal explained.

The Georgetown Revitalisation Plan has already started improving drainage and road networks, with similar projects planned across the country, Minister Croal said.

Croal emphasised that these measures collectively advance homeownership while stimulating economic growth and improving the quality of life across Guyana.

He noted that the government’s broader housing strategy therefore aims not only to provide homes but also to create sustainable, economically vibrant communities where citizens have security, opportunity, and access to essential services.

He explained that trusts are used for a variety of purposes, including commercial and personal arrangements, and are a key feature in financial centres such as the Eastern Caribbean, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas and Anguilla.

With Guyana’s economy expanding and its financial sector becoming more sophisticated, he said a Trust Act is necessary to protect the financial system. Nandlall added that the Financial Action Task Force has already identified the absence of a trust law as a “critical deficiency” that must be addressed urgently.

Speaking on his weekly programme, Issues in the News, Nandlall said the current Companies Act, though “a very good piece of legislation,” is now outdated, having been enacted in 1995. He noted that the transformation of the global financial system since then requires Guyana to update its corporate laws to address emerging risks and comply with international

“Our Companies Act, though a very good piece of legislation, is now 30 years old,” Nandlall said. “The financial world has transformed over the last three decades. And we need to update our legislation.”

According to the Attorney General, one of the key drivers behind the reform is the increasing use of corporate structures for illicit purposes, including money laundering.

He stressed that Guyana’s laws must evolve to guard against such abuse and ensure stronger regulatory

oversight.

“We have companies being used for illicit purposes, for the laundering of money, and our laws have to be updated to meet international standards,” he said. Nandlall disclosed that consultations on the proposed amendments to the Companies Act have already begun, involving the legal profession, the accounting profession, and the private sector.

He said the government intends to continue this consultative approach before final proposals are taken to Cabinet.

Guyana’s first Agri-Tourism policy poised to create 1,500 indirect jobs

G U YA N A’ S f i r s t - e v e r agri-tourism policy aims to generate some 1,500 indirect jobs within the next five years of implementation, a target described as “achievable” by Candace Phillips, Senior Manager of Product Development within the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.

Phillips explained to the Sunday Chronicle how the major target spans enterprises

in all ten administrative regions, allowing for inclusive growth and the spin-off effect of such implementation. From transportation, labour, meals, culinary, hospitality, agro-processors, and associated amenities and services, the policy covers the total value chain.

The target outlined within the policy document represents 10 per cent of tourism’s projected contribution to indirect employment. In the plan, the first five years will allow for project implementation focusing on curating experiences, associated training and capacity-building, Phillips explained.

Depending on the individual product development cycle, it is expected that various experiences will be unveiled, she stated, noting that postfive-year experiences offered to the target market will give rise to new areas for further development.

The overall strategy, according to her, is to improve the linkage between tourism and agriculture not only for tourism purposes but also to reduce Guyana’s dependency on food importation.

Phillips did, however, note that incentives still need to be

defined but will be further discussed as the implementation phase begins. One of the strategies would be to align businesses with incentives for registration and operational policies, which can help them

On a global scale, the national policy plans to address food security, economic diversification and climate resilience, while also advancing Guyana’s efforts to meet the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Transforming Guyana Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, during the launch of the policy, had stated that the policy marks a decisive move towards converting Guyana into a global attraction. In her address, the minister spoke extensively about the “infinite possibilities” within the tourism sector.

“This initiative underscores the unwavering commitment of the Government of Guyana to foster the growth of niche tourism.

The advancement of the agritourism sector is the result of a strategic partnership between MINTIC and the Ministry of Agriculture,” Minister Rodrigues said.

Emphasising the government’s commitment to developing the tourism sector, the Minister had also announced the creation of a National Agri-tourism Council, a body that will work assiduously to execute the national policy and oversee its rollout.

“Our objective is to create a diverse and inclusive council that represents a broad spectrum of stakeholders,” she said.

Nandlall says legal profession must be - Legal Practitioners made more accountable Act to be amended

ATTORNEY GENERAL and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, has described the state of Guyana’s legal profession as falling short of the standards required to uphold the rule of law, while announcing government support for legislative reform aimed at strengthening accountability within both the Bar and the judiciary.

Speaking on his weekly programme Issues in the News, Nandlall said a strong, ethical legal profession and a vibrant Bar Association are fundamental to any society that wishes to adhere to the rule of law. However, he acknowledged that Guyana’s legal profession does not currently meet those expectations.

“The legal profession is very crucial in this equation.

A responsible, educated, ethically driven legal profession and a vibrant Bar Association are prerequisites for a society that wishes to adhere to the rule of law,” Nandlall said.

“In Guyana, sadly, the legal profession does not meet those standards.”

He noted that his comments were made with “the greatest of respect,” emphasising that he himself is a member of the profession.

Nandlall pointed out that concerns about the legal profession are not new and have also been raised by the judiciary during engagements on the administration of justice.

According to the Attorney General, the judiciary has called for legislative reform to the Legal Practitioners Act, a move that the government intends to fully support.

He disclosed that discussions on this issue are expected to begin early in the new year.

“The judiciary itself highlighted this issue in their engagement. And they are calling for legislative reform to the Legal Practitioners Act. And the government will support that measure,” he said.

“In fact, I will be meeting with the Guyana Bar Association in January to begin that conversation.”

Nandlall also spoke directly to the experiences of ordinary citizens who interact with the legal system, suggesting that dissatisfaction with legal representation and judicial processes is widespread.

“You who are listening to me, any one of you would know, if you have not experienced it yourself, would know a person who is dissatisfied

with the way their case is being handled by their lawyers and or the way the case is being handled in the judiciary,” he said.

“I could bet you my bottom dollar that you have had that experience personally or you know someone who has had that experience. That must change.”

He stressed repeatedly that meaningful reform is necessary and unavoidable, arguing that both the judiciary and the legal profession must be made more accountable to the public they serve.

“That must change. And we have to make both the judiciary and the legal profession more accountable,” Nandlall said, adding that he believes both institutions are willing to work with the government to achieve these objectives.

The Attorney General said he is aware that the judiciary has already committed itself to improving accountability through internal policies and strategies. He expressed confidence that the legal profession would also support reforms aimed at strengthening oversight and discipline.

“I believe that both the judiciary and the legal profession will work with us to achieve these important concepts, these important objectives,” he said. “The judiciary professes to be pursuing pol-

icies and strategies to make it more accountable. And I can’t see the legal profession would not want to move in that direction.”

Central to the proposed reforms, Nandlall said, is the amendment of the Legal Practitioners Act to establish a stronger disciplinary framework for misconduct by lawyers and judicial officers.

“We have to have a stronger regime of discipline for errant practitioners as well

as errant judicial officers,” he said, while noting that any such reforms must respect constitutional boundaries and adhere to principles of accountability and transparency.

Nandlall also placed Guyana’s challenges within a broader international context, stating that similar issues exist in other jurisdictions and are not unique to Guyana.

“Guyana is not the only country in the world facing these problems,” he said,

adding that the government intends to confront them directly. He further referenced the judiciary’s strategic plan for the period 2024 to 2031, noting that it has the full backing of the government and the President.

“The judiciary has a plan, a vision, and we support that plan, a strategic plan from 2024 to 2031. And the President has expressed his full support for that plan,” Nandlall said.

Alignment, not interference

GUYANA is undergoing a significant change in how its institutions operate. This contrasts sharply with the adversarial relationship between the executive and the judiciary that has often troubled democracies across the Caribbean and beyond.

Attorney General Anil Nandlall recently spoke about how the government and the judiciary are working together. This reflects a thoughtful approach to democratic governance that values respect for the constitution and real developmental results.

Nandlall made an important distinction between unilateral executive actions and collaborative efforts. Presidents with weaker institutions often launch broad judicial reform plans without meaningful input from those institutions that will carry them out. President Ali chose a different path. By consulting the judiciary before

presenting his vision for the justice sector, the government showed that good governance involves not only achieving efficient results but also understanding the process that leads to them.

This consultative approach helps shield the reform agenda from claims of executive overreach, a constant concern when the independence of the judiciary is questioned. This cooperation is important because it appears fully genuine rather than just for show.

The shared goals of the executive and the judiciary—from improving access to justice in remote areas to updating court systems—are not random compromises but a true meeting of institutional interests.

Both branches understand that a broken justice system benefits no one, especially in a developing country that aims to attract investment and establish the rule of law.

The real successes demonstrate the credibility of this partnership. In the last five years, the government and the judiciary have worked together to rebuild courthouses in some of Guyana’s most isolated areas.

A court in Mahdia now has the same technological setup as one in Georgetown, while Port Kaituma has digital recording systems and air-conditioned rooms. This is more than just symbolic change. For people in remote communities who usually travel for days just to attend a short hearing, these improvements mean real access to justice.

The planned expansion to Wakenaam, Leguan, and Orealla further supports this idea, making sure that geography no longer determines a Guyanese citizen’s ability to seek legal help.

The ongoing digital transformation—ranging from e-filing in the High Court and Court of Appeal to the upcoming digitisation of mag-

istrates’ courts by mid-2026—addresses a persistent issue: ensuring reliable and consistent access to justice.

When case management systems rely on evidence and standardised procedures instead of judicial discretion, the outcomes are less likely to be biased. This is crucial for a nation where public trust in institutions has often been weak.

However, this outlook is not based on blind optimism. The real test of this partnership is yet to come. Consultations are essential, but they must lead to real results.

The proposed new judicial complex in Georgetown, the legislative reforms for judicial accountability, and the timelines for digitisation must all be realised.

The judiciary’s own seven-year strategic plan shows that it is ready for this modernisation. The executive’s budget commitment to these

projects indicates political support.

What Guyana shows is that constitutional stability does not need to come from conflict between government branches or from executive power disguised as reform.

It develops when institutions understand their dependence on each other and their shared duty to the public. The relationship between the executive and judiciary is not a weakness to exploit; it is a strength to build upon.

In a time when democracies are facing challenges around the world, Guyana’s approach to consultative governance offers a unique example. It demonstrates that a vision grounded in institutional cooperation and constitutional respect can enhance both development and democracy.

The current reforms in the justice sector represents responsible governance, and this distinction is very important.

by November 22, 2027, the aircraft terminal will feature commercial spaces, restau-

rants, cafés, 150 hotel-style rooms, medical service areas, a pharmacy, a bank and full aviation facilities. It will also accommodate international flights and support the direct movement of passengers and cargo from the interior to the coastal land and overseas destinations.

Finally, Mr Brian Tiwari, who is an exceptionally kind and generous business mogul and known for his virtuous character, is of the firm belief that trust must be earned, truth is non-negotiable, and integrity should not be compromised. He also believes that there are no secrets to success. It is the result of careful preparation, hard work and learning from failure.

IN 2024, the New York Times published a cartoonElite Space Club. The picture was telling. It showed a poor Indian man with a cow knocking at the door of an ‘Elite Space Club’.

Fast forward to December 24, 2025, India’s successful LVM3-M6 launch placed one of the heaviest known Spacecraft- BlueBird Block-2 in its intended orbit. History was made.

The New York Times kept quiet. There was no article, there was no deriding cartoon. Silence spoke a thousand words.

No. It is not about the invisible divide. It is not about the haves and have-nots. It is about sharing and soaring together. This is not about contempt; it is about collaboration and co-operation.

The fact that the United States chose an Indian launch vehicle to place its heaviest communication satellite shows the trust and

recognition of the Indian space sector’s proven record. Since 2014, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has launched over 360 foreign satellites for 34 countries—with a whopping 232 from the United States and 83 from the UK, the most competitive and risk-averse space markets.

From Austria to Australia and from Singapore to Spain, dozens of developed countries have chosen Indian space vehicles to launch their satellites.

This deep trust comes from doing hard things repeatedly with precision. In 2017, the ISRO set a record by launching 104 satellites at once—the highest ever—showcasing exceptional scale, accuracy, and dependability. The BlueBird fitted into a clear continuum.

For commercial launches, Earth observation, and human spaceflight co-operation, global powers are increasingly choosing ISRO, not as a low-cost option, but as a dependable partner at the core of the space ecosystem.

India has always believed in co-operation and collab-

oration. ISRO collaborates with countries across the globe to enable space technology bring a change into people’s life across the seven seas.

For ISRO, only Sky is the limit. From agriculture to disaster management, resource mapping to communications, ISRO works with partner agencies to make space technology accessible and affordable. Earlier this year, during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered the Open Satellite Data Partnership initiative. This partnership will make satellite data and analysis from G20 space agencies more accessible, interoperable and useful for countries in the Global South.

Imagine the plight of a farmer in a developing country dealing with the vagaries of changing weather patterns.

Untimely and heavy rains resulting in floods endanger the crops in South Asia, South East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and even South America.

Satellite data could provide early warnings and help farmers make smarter de-

cisions. Unfortunately, the ‘digital divide’ doesn’t allow many developing countries to use such satellite data. Many developed countries possess rich Earth observation capabilities and yet most of the developing countries struggle without them.

Even though global open-data efforts have been in place for many years, such as the European Union’s Copernicus Programme that allows full, free and open data policy and shares Earth observation data, India’s proposal stands apart in scope and intent.

The Open Satellite Data Partnership focuses on creating a unified, accessible and interoperable framework across G20 space agencies, designed particularly to empower the Global South with crucial, life-saving geospatial information. Such a joint initiative to capture detailed, large-scale changes offers an essential foundation for international cooperation in the space sector.

India is planning an ambitious roadmap to deploy 119 Earth Observation (EO), Satellite Navigation (SAT-

NAV) and Satellite Communication (SATCOM) satellites by 2040, which would allow access to crucial satellite data in multiple sectors. Interestingly, private enterprises are playing increasingly critical roles, from building and launching satellite constellations to developing analytics platforms that turn raw imagery into actionable insights for agriculture, urban planning, resource management and disaster response.

India has developed a new model where the government provides the vision and framework, while private companies drive the actual innovation and scale.

Educational institutions, especially leading universities contribute to the research.

Such synergy is at the heart of the global supply chain for EO data and satellite analytics. ISRO- as a leading global agency in the space sector works closely with our international partners in making technology accessible and dependable to bridge the digital divide.

In July 2025, ISRO displayed its capability during the Global Biodiversity Sum-

mit in Georgetown, Guyana.

At a side event, ISRO interacted with representatives from the CARICOM member states on issues related to the application of space technology in areas of mutual interest. CARICOM and especially Guyana, with its rapidly expanding economy and the President Irfaan Aliled government’s emphasis on innovation and diversification, provides a unique opportunity for expanding co-operation in the space sector. It fits Prime Minister Modi’s vision of One Earth, One Family, One Future.

The LVM3-M6 launch has shattered another invisible glass ceiling. It has reinforced our shared belief that collaboration and co-operation for Global Good is no longer a dream.

It is a reality that we must continue to strive for.

As members of the Global South, we must reckon on this untapped potential that can change our world. Our co-operation for Global Good should never face any limit. May such a partnership soar, where no sky is a limit.

If we only have love

GUYANA is about to enter a new year. What will it bring? The future is promised to no one. Life is unpredictable. But the philosophers, especially the existentialist school in philosophy, argue that we, humans, have and make choices in a large world where there is limited time. A journey superbly described by the best philosophy book I have read, “Being and Time” by Martin Heidegger.

If we have room to make choices, that time allows us, then those choices must be designed to maximise the essence of being. Can homo sapiens successfully accomplish what Heidegger proposed when he wrote his magnum opus a hundred years ago? The jury is out on that. Look at the world today.

Look at our country and the dark minds that are willing to tear it down.

In 2028, we will have the Olympics. Its enduring motto is mankind’s love for each other. The perennial theme of the Olympics is love of humanity and the equality within mankind. But every four years, when the Olympic Games are finished, homo sapiens return to what Arthur Koestler describes as the inherent brutality of the human being.

The last Olympics occurred four years ago, and look what has happened in the world since then. Is there anyone living in today’s world who believes that the motto of the Olympics was not torn to pieces by the occurrence of genocide in Gaza?

But it is not just the occurrence of genocide; it is the incredible truth that a huge part of mankind supports it and also denies the perpetration of genocide in Gaza. In the world today, some countries refuse to acknowledge that genocide is taking place in Gaza and are happy to trade and send arms to the country committing genocide – Israel.

It was an unfriendly world last year. Non-white immigrants who have been brutalised in their own countries for centuries by White European empires are being treated as pariahs by these European empires.

Do you know that France occupied Algeria for almost a century? Yet this year, France passed sweeping anti-immigrant legislation. These same drastic anti-immigrant measures, the Labour Government had enacted even before the ink had dried on the swearing in of the new government.

These same empires are refusing to pay compensation for the hundreds of years of misery they created in the countries of the im-

migrants they do not want. It was in France that the last summer Olympics were held. The next location is the US in 2028. It is in the US that the World Cup in soccer will take place next year, and what is taking place in the US right now does not give any human in the Global South the hope that, based on skin colour, they will get visas to see the game.

I am planning a column either this year or early next year to take a revisionist look at Adolph Hitler and his Nazi government. How true is the description of that regime that has been forced upon us since 1945?

Was Hitler a more terrible human than the current Prime Minister of Israel? Not in my opinion.

I leave you with a moving song in the hope that it moves you in Guyana, and you make every effort to make our country better than those empires that once colonised us. Though I like every song Johnny Mathis sang, I prefer the version below.

Using poor people for political optics

RECENTLY, a video of a child being grabbed and seemingly forced to pose for a photo with a gift he received from the Mohameds appeared on social media. The child’s facial expression was one of discomfort, bewilderment and confusion. Also, another video appeared online with Parliamentarian Azruddin Mohamed sharing food to people in Albouystown on Christmas morning. They had no gloves, aprons, hairnets or a food handler’s certificate.

They were basically having the people’s photos and videos taken in exchange for a plate of food, and to help Mohamed’s political campaign.

There are several other times, the Mohameds went to depressed, poor and needy communities not with the intention of highlighting the plight of the people but to assist with their political campaign and publicity.

Then, there is the APNU Parliamentarian Coretta McDonald, who is allegedly saying that the current government engages in discrimination and favouritism in its treatment of poor people.

She said that there is allegedly one treatment of the poor and Afro-Guyanese, and another for Indians and supporters of the government, which sees this group

benefiting from the doling out of multi-million-dollar contracts, small business loans, financial assistance and such like.

And finally, several other opposition parliamentarians seem to be talking about Guyana’s poverty rate and level, and weaponising this against the government at every forum on and off social media.

Firstly, there is nothing wrong with taking a group photo and video with children, but the Mohameds must have permission from the adults if it will be used on social media and mass media, and on a political platform.

Parents must do more to protect their children from those politicians who are obsessed with the political optics and are seeking to create a moment on social media. They are not concerned about the joy of the children receiving the gifts as much as looking like they are helping the poor and needy. The fact that a child is seemingly uncomfortable with the picture should give the politician pause. No one’s child should be treated like that.

Similarly, the Mohameds should know that the event in Albouystown would come in for a number of criticisms. It felt like Mohamed was competing with the president. It felt like he was copying the

president and imitating his One Guyana cookout. But if that is the case, Mohamed should ensure he has protective gear and the relevant certificates for cooking for large crowds.

It was an attempt to seem humble and concerned about the poorer and unfortunate classes of people. Why were photographers and videographers getting people to eat food and collect food from Mohamed? These selective images are now out there for the public to see.

They are in bad taste and will forever paint a bad image, even if it is misinterpreted. Optics matters. They should not paint the people of Albouystown in such a horrible light for the world to see at the expense of gaining publicity for the Mohameds or any other starved politician.

If it’s a genuine initiative, it should not be used as political propaganda or even posted by the Mohameds. The independent media should have been invited if WIN was serious about coverage.

Instead of coming up with a unique and innovative way of spending time with the poor and unfortunate classes of people at Christmas, the Mohameds saw it fit to flatter the president by imitation of his event.

media confirm that she is seeking to be racist, bitter and petty. Like the APNU, she is not being objective or critical in her analysis of what she is seeing happening in Guyana, and that is perfectly fine. She could definitely live in the land of fairytale and pull the wool over the eyes of a few, but the reality of economic empowerment is stark and clear as day.

McDonald failed to state that the government, since 2020, has given billions of dollars in small business loans without making race, political preference or any other criteria that could lead to discrimination, a requirement. In fact, more PNC and APNU supporters have accessed grants and loans from the Small Business Bureau (SBB) since 2020 compared to the previous government.

SBB has successfully disbursed nearly $900 million through its grants and loan guarantee initiatives in 2023 to support and expand aspiring enterprises.

The government distributed 100 small business loans and issued 1,362 grants across the country in 2024 and almost doubled the amount in 2025.

McDonald’s analysis is made up of lies and hysterical information. Anyone could see that there are more Afro-Guyanese people and businesses bidding for contracts and being awarded contracts than during the years of Granger’s presidency. The government has taken measures to diversify the pool of contractors and level the playing field where possible.

McDonald is seeking to practice jumbie economics and sadly cannot grasp the complex realities of politics, even if she tried. There is no discrimination or favouritism within the system, and she should be fighting for more opportunities to improve the lives of Guyanese poor people. It is sad how people like McDonald pass off their ignorance as facts.

Thirdly, the opposition parties that continue to use the World Bank’s/IDB’s estimation of poverty in Guyana as a political tool against the government are doing Guyana a disservice. Guyana deserves better from its

leaders and parliamentarians.

Guyana’s poverty rate for 2025 is highly contested, with official data lagging or instances of updated data simply not being used.

Recent 2025 reports suggest significant drops due to oil wealth and government programmes, with some estimates pointing to below 20 per cent but this will not stop the opposition from stating that poverty is climbing by significant numbers.

The truth is, social policies, education grants, and carbon credit funds have been an economic game changer as far as poverty is concerned.

So, the opposition parties, APNU and WIN, use ‘poor people’ for political optics, focusing on actions or statements that create a public perception of concern about poverty, often without implementing substantial structural changes or genuine policy solutions. WIN and APNU appear to focus heavily on appearances and public image for political gain.

They hardly focus on substantial actions or solutions which escape their brains. These politicians engage in photo opportunities, poverty simulations, or public visits to impoverished areas to appear relatable and caring, even if they lack actual personal experience of poverty.

Mohamed is a classic example of a life that was built on backs of hardworking people who were poor and needy. He cannot relate to the things he is being told.

Also, the opposition’s political rhetoric often amplifies cultural stereotypes that define an “us” versus “them,” sometimes painting benefit claimants as “scroungers” to appeal to other voter bases. This can reinforce negative narratives and reduce public support for welfare programs. They have weaponised poverty, using it to keep people dependent and easier to manipulate, ensuring a reliable voter base that struggles to demand genuine accountability.

APNU and WIN appear to be big on rhetoric and minuscule on solutions that lead to the implementation of genuine, long-term poverty reduction strategies—such as expanding the welfare

state, ensuring fair wages, or protecting social policies— which means the underlying issues persist. Ultimately, the use of poverty for political optics prioritises the short-term goal of winning elections and maintaining power over the long-term goal of improving the lives of citizens in need.

Finally, change and policies are vital to improving people’s lives, not handouts.

Setting the public image to reflect the narrative that a political party is helping the poor and needy Guyanese will not address the issue.

If the WIN and APNU continue talking about poverty without being realistic and advising their supporters to access the available solutions that the government has that could lead to poverty alleviation, they are part of the problem, not the solution.

Competition for political influence often prevents ideals from becoming realities.

This leaves people suffering through destitution every day. Consequently, actions may not help those who need them or fail to consider those who will be affected. If people are forced to change, this can lead to conflict as people may be unable to meet their needs.

Alliances between external organisations and political factions can potentially cause change, but not in the way that APNU and WIN are going about the issues.

Instead of aiming to solve them separately, APNU and WIN can opt to work together with the government, and they can help ease poverty and the issues it causes.

They should not use the circumstances of a community that is poor or needy and weaponise it against the government, which has done a phenomenal job in the reduction of poverty. President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali is expected to explore more poverty reduction strategies and delve into the core policy framework that will further reduce the prevalence of poverty.

2026 - the year Guyana leaves the naysayers behind

AS the last, ragged hours of 2025 tick away and global newsrooms line up their horror reels of war, disaster and scandal, we in Guyana must tune out the noisy trivialities that clutter our social media feeds and reach instead for the very real opportunities now coming to our doorsteps.

Minister Ashni Singh has promised that Budget 2026 will be built around long‑term economic infra‑ structure, deliberately shift‑ ing spending away from con‑ sumption toward investments that support competitiveness and growth.

Budget 2026 is expected to be the main vehicle that will deliver key promises outlined in the PPP/C’s 2025 manifesto, which includes major roadworks, a deep‑wa‑ ter port, new hospitals, 40,000 homes, 100 additional schools, a Development Bank

and an anti‑corruption unit.

If you’ve grown accus‑ tomed to that familiar dread whenever your monthly GPL bill arrives, and that’s before you even confront the strain of finding the thousands of dollars to pay it, relief is on the horizon.

With engineering works nearly complete, procure‑ ment over 90 per cent, and crews working around the clock, the Wales gas-to-en‑ ergy project is racing to meet its mid‑2026 deadline, of‑ fering the promise of more affordable and reliable elec‑ tricity for households and businesses alike.

Uaru, the fifth offshore development in the Stabroek Block, is expected to begin production in 2026, bringing oil production capacity to approximately 1.1 million barrels per day, and cement‑ ing Guyana’s status as the world’s leading oil producer

per capita and an emerging energy power with the means to expand its national wealth and long‑term development prospects rapidly The long-awaited Lin‑ den to Lethem highway is expected to be completed in 2026. The spinal column for national integration and usable year-round, it will improve trade by giving Guy‑ anese businesses access to some 20 million people in north-eastern Brazil. It will boost Guyana’s eco-tourism products and cut travel time by more than 12 hours.

The highway will unlock economic opportunities and improve the lives of thou‑ sands of people in hinter‑ land communities, making it cheaper to move produce, construction materials and fuel between the coast and the Rupununi. The spin-off benefits of this all-weather corridor are mind-boggling.

Gold miner dies in river incident

POLICE in Regional Division #2 are investigating a river incident that occurred on Tuesday, December 23, at Karimap Creek, St Monica, Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo Coast, which resulted in the death of 59-year-old gold miner, Lennox Smith, also known as “Uncle Becks”.

According to preliminary information released by the Guyan Police Force, Smith of

Kabakaburi Mission, Upper Pomeroon River, had been travelling in a boat along the Pomeroon River earlier that afternoon. Sometime later, a report was made that he was missing.

Residents subsequently launched a search and later discovered Smith’s body in the vicinity of Karimap Creek.

The body was escorted to the Charity Waterfront,

where it was examined by police ranks.

Smith was then transported to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead; his body has since been taken to the Suddie Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police reported that one male is currently in custody and is assisting with the investigation.

Two-year-old drowns on Christmas Day

POLICE in Regional Division #2 are investigating a drowning incident which occurred on Thursday, December 25, between 02:15 hours and 02:30 hours at Grant Atlas, Lower Pomeroon River, Essequibo, resulting in the death of Zoria Seegobin, a two-year-four-month-old of Friendship, East Bank Demerara.

Police Headquarters revealed that the child was staying with relatives at the said address for the Christmas holiday. In the early

hours of Christmas Day, she was discovered missing from the home and was subsequently found submerged in a nearby trench.

She was transported by relatives to Charity, where police ranks escorted her to the Charity Cottage Hospital. She was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced her dead. The body was later taken to the Suddie Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.

POLICE are investigating the murder of 75-year-old Athlone Goring, which occurred on Boxing Day at about 05:40hours at Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara.

Police Headquarters reported that the victim, who had recently arrived in Guyana, was found lying in the upper flat of his resi‑ dence with what appeared to be multiple stab wounds.

He was taken to the West Demerara Re‑

gional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The body is at Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Several persons were questioned in re‑ lation to the matter and two individuals - a 20-year-old male and a 22-year-old female - were arrested and are presently in custody assisting with the investigation.

The police said that CCTV footage is being reviewed as investigations continue.

Elderly man stabbed to death on Boxing Day

Shipping, warehousing, agri-processing and a host of other logistics and service industries will transform the interior into a dynamic hub of economic activity.

Guyana’s zero‑interest Development Bank has the potential to do for local small and micro‑entrepreneurs what Bangladesh’s Grameen Bank did for people once written off as “unbankable” into a powerful engine of growth, jobs and social mo‑ bility.

President Ali has said that the Development Bank will democratise credit in a way that permanently shifts national wealth creation from a narrow corporate base to tens of thousands of ordinary Guyanese.

There has been a wealthy, entitled pretender to political leadership who has spent weeks hurling baseless smears at Agriculture Minis‑ ter Zulfikar Mustapha, with‑ out offering a single shred of proof. In 2026, that same minister will be busy doing real work: introducing spe‑ cial incentives for agri‑value chains and cold‑storage fa‑ cilities, opening up 100,000 acres of new farmland, and ramping up large‑scale corn and soya production to cut

feed imports and save the economy tens of millions of US dollars. As Guyana’s food production grows, the ministry’s roll‑out of cli‑ mate‑smart, tech‑driven ag‑ riculture will help farmers in real-time to build more resilient production systems that can better withstand ab‑ normal weather, pests, floods and droughts.

For expectant parents worried about the health of their unborn child, the specialised Paediatric and Maternal Hospital at Ogle is expected to be commissioned in 2026. It will focus on ad‑ vanced maternal and child care, a first-of-its-kind facili‑ ty in the Caribbean. There are still six more regional hos‑ pitals to be commissioned, providing CT scans, modern operating theatres and 24/7 emergency departments.

A few days ago, 500 nurs‑ ing assistants graduated from a special hybrid programme.

It was heartening to discover, directly from the mouth of the Minister of Health, that every single one of them who desires to work will have a job waiting for them.

This administration will continue to support families with school-aged children in 2026 through major cash

and transport grants tied to schooling. Every child will have a secondary school place this coming year, with 100 new and fully rebuilt schools, on the coast and in the hinterland, to come on stream in 2026.

Each child will be receiv‑ ing a Because We Care cash grant of $100,000 per year, plus another $100,000 annual transportation grant, putting over $40 billion into parents’ hands while breaking down the cost barrier to education.

So, as 2025 exhales its last breath, it is worth remember‑ ing that a country is not built on staged outrage, but on power plants, highways, hos‑ pitals, schools and the quiet courage of people who use them to change their lives.

In 2026, Guyanese will have more than enough real progress to occupy their col‑ lective attention; the only question is whether we will lift our eyes from the noise long enough to claim it for ourselves.

Over $1B in business grants empowered --Minister Rodrigues reveals more than 4,000 SMEs --President Ali says next five years will build on current developments and drive an even more ‘ambitious’ transformation

MORE than 4,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have benefitted from grants amounting to over $ 1 billion, as the government continues to empower these types of businesses to fuel the backbone of Guyana’s economy.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, during a recent broadcast, spoke extensively about how the government’s SME push is reshaping livelihoods nationwide while simultaneously fostering inclusive growth.

The minister was building on the momentum set by President Dr Irfaan Ali, who previously outlined a fiveyear national development agenda that sees plans of zero-interest loans for micro businesses and SMEs, along with the expansion of opportunities for women, youths

and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

Minister Rodrigues said: “Micro, small and medium enterprises are central to Guyana’s economic transformation. They are the backbone of any economy, and in the last five years, we have spent over $1 billion, that have been distributed in grants to over 4,000 businesses. So, in the past, we have had a range of support services that we have given to micro, small and medium enterprises.”

President Ali, during a previous address, stated that in 2026, SMEs will be able to access loans of up to $3 million at zero interest and without collateral through the new Guyana Development Bank. Those SMEs will also benefit from mentorship, training and the support needed to turn ideas into thriving businesses, he said. Highlighting previous

achievements, the President said that more than 50 per cent of the beneficiaries from the small business grants were women.

“There is no other jurisdiction that can point to a policy that directly impacted the lives of 50 per cent of the impact were women and we are just getting started.

Building on these gains realised during our first term, our agenda for the next five years is one of even more ambitious transformation,” Dr Ali stated.

Propelling Guyana’s development Minister Rodrigues said that President Ali’s five-year vision for Guyana focuses on inclusive, diversified and people-centred transformation, ensuring that all Guyanese, regardless of their background, ethnicity, religion or location, benefit.

ing positioned as a confident, globally competitive economy driven by its people, and this sector allows all of us an opportunity to be a part, especially in the tourism sector,” adding: “There is no secret to our national agenda and the plans that we have to really propel Guyana’s development, and we want to ensure that every single Guyanese is a part of this process. That is why we spend all this time expounding on our vision, explaining our plans, and also ensuring that people understand the long-term benefits and positive effects of each and every single initiative, intervention and project.”

Speaking further on the interventions by the ministry, including grants, the Minister said that there have been tremendous investments to support community develop-

ment. She added: “The Small Business Bureau continues, of course, to expand access to concessional loans, to mentorship and to incubator support. Over 11,000 businesses have been trained in the last five years. This is the level of investment that we are making in our micro, small and medium enterprisestraining is an important part in upskilling our people, but also ensuring that we build resilience into each business, whether small, micro or medium size. Persons living with disabilities have benefitted from our programs.”

Through the Small Business Bureau, more than 50 PWDs have been able to access loans at 0 per cent interest rates through the agency, the minister said, noting that this allows them to actively participate in Guyana’s grow-

ing economy.

“They have been empowered with financial freedom, and we continue to monitor and support their businesses and their livelihoods,” the minister added.

Speaking on how businesses have been presented with the opportunity to gain exposure with the bureau’s support, she first revealed that over 50 businesses received sponsorship to take part in the recent GUYEXPO, where they displayed products for free and were able to reach new markets.

Additionally, 16 SMEs received sponsorship at the ongoing Christmas Village on Main Street. She also pointed out how business incubators in Lethem and Belvedere were established under the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) government.

ELDERLY citizens and vulnerable residents at the Dharm Shala in Albouystown, Georgetown, were overjoyed to be served lunch on Christmas Day

by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This is the sixth consecutive year that the president has visited the country’s oldest humanitarian charity on Christmas Day. The president was joined

by Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Vanessa Benn.

The Dharm Shala (“Home of Benevolence for all Races”) continues to serve as a haven for those in need, and President Ali has pledged the government’s continuous support through the Men on Mission (MoM) initiative, a brainchild of his. “We can support some of the maintenance work that you have on the building here and in Berbice,” he told the management and staff of the charity.

“We know how expensive it is. If we have to get the material to you [through] the Men on Mission programme, [we] will work with you on some of that maintenance pro-

gramme.” Describing the organisation as a place of hope and compassion, President Ali reminded residents that they are valued members of society. “A very important aspect of the Christmas story is a story of community; various communities coming together to acknowledge this symbol of hope, of togetherness, of love, of faith and as is demonstrated by this home,” he said The head of state pledged his government’s support in the new year and commended the management for their consistent and passionate support for the vulnerable. In his first term as president, President Ali has made his annual lunch visit to the Dharm Shala into a tradition, affirming his commitment to his ‘One Guyana’ vision.

The government has donated over $3 million in monetary aid to the Charity, which was established over a hundred years ago.

IN the spirit of goodwill and compassion, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali handed over a newly constructed home to James Hercules and his family at Enterprise along the East Coast of Demerara, on Christmas morning.

Hercules, 46, lives with an orthopaedic impairment, a severe physical disability affecting his musculoskeletal system that hinders his movement. He has spent most of his life moving his family from place to place, never truly settling. He wrote to President Ali requesting his assistance.

“I’m thankful very much for this home…and I give God all the praise and thanks,” he said.

The President mentioned that the plan involves setting up prep kitchens in various areas.

These kitchens would help clusters and homes prepare their produce for delivery to businesses. This programme aims to create a demand for home-grown produce, promoting sustainable small businesses and local economic activity.

FIVE babies were born at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Christmas Day. First Lady Arya Ali spent the holiday morning bringing comfort, compassion, and cheer to the babies, their parents, and healthcare workers.

The newborns: two girls and three boys, were delivered earlier in the day, with hospital officials noting that more births were expected as essential services continued uninterrupted.

During her visit to the maternity and paediatric wards, the first lady distributed care packages and hampers and announced that toys would also be provided for children receiving care.

She said her visit reflects the true spirit of the season, sharing

love and hope.

“Christmas is a time for family, but today we are extending our love to our extended family, spreading compassion, hope and joy,” she said.

Construction progresses on new Kato Hospital

CONSTRUCTION of the new Kato Hospital continues to advance, marking a major milestone in the Government of Guyana’s effort to expand access to high-quality healthcare in hinterland and riverain communities.

During a recent visit to the construction site, Director General of the Ministry of Health, Dr Vishwa Mahadeo, conducted an on-the-ground assessment of ongoing works and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to delivering a modern, fully equipped health facility for residents of Region Eight. He was accompanied by Director of Regional Health Services, Dr Cerdel Mawatt; Coastland Coordinator, Dr Angela Binda and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Malcolm Watkins.

The new Kato Hospital, located in Guyana’s Potaro-Siparuni region, is being constructed following a sod-turning ceremony held on November 29, 2024. The project is being executed by the Sinophamintl Consortium, with construction expected to follow a 24-month timeline, targeting completion between late 2026 and 2027.

Spanning approximately 57,000 square feet, the stateof-the-art facility represents an investment of about $5.4 billion, funded through the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) under the Health Care Network Strengthening Project. Once completed, the hospital will significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the region and reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for specialised medical care.

The facility will accommodate 45 beds and feature 24-hour Accident and Emergency services; modern diagnostic laboratories; fully equipped operating theatres and advanced imaging capabilities, including X-ray, CT scan, and ultrasound services. Additional services will include dialysis, cataract surgeries, a fully stocked pharmacy, and specialised units dedicated to maternal, paediatric, and neonatal care.

Man convicted of attempted rape of a 4-year-old

GANESH Lewis, 44, of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), has been found guilty of attempting to rape a fouryear-old child, following a trial before Chief Justice (ag), Navindra Singh, at the High Court in Demerara.

Lewis faced two charges under the Sexual Offences Act, Chapter 8:03: rape of a child under sixteen years and attempted rape of a child under 16 years. The incident occurred on August 2, 2022, in a shed annexed to a barbershop.

According to court evidence, a resident saw Lewis with the victim in a compromising position, with both the child’s and Lewis’ pants down.

The resident intervened and questioned Lewis, who then left the scene with the child. The victim’s family, aware that Lewis was a close family friend, immediately reported the matter to the police. Lewis was arrested on August 4, 2022 and denied the allegations.

During the trial, Lewis told the court that he was asleep at home when the

child came to him and called out. He claimed that he later approached the barbershop to lift the child off a stool, insisting that the resident had misrepresented the situation.

The prosecution argued that it would have been impossible for Lewis to hear any noise from the barbershop, as it was closed and not within earshot of his home.

After hearing the evidence, the jury found Lewis not guilty of the first charge of rape. However, he was unanimously found guilty of the alternative charge of attempted rape. Sentencing for Lewis has been scheduled for January 21, 2026. The convict was represented by attorney-at-law Ronald Bostwick, while the prosecution was led by Simran Gajraj, along with Christopher Belfield and Geneva Wills.

Lewis was first charged on January 27, 2023. Following a preliminary inquiry, he was committed to stand trial on September 21, 2024, after the magistrate ruled that a prima facie case had been established to warrant a trial at the High Court.

Mhatre named India’s captain for U19 World Cup AYUSH Mhatre has been named India’s skipper for the 2026 Under-19 World Cup. Vihaan Malhotra, who was picked by RCB recently in the IPL Auction, has been named Mhatre’s deputy in India’s squads announced for the showpiece event and the tour of South Africa, on Saturday.

Rebel Tennis Club successful in the Jingle Ball Open and Junior Tournament in St Lucia NINETEEN players from the Rebel Tennis Club competed in the Jingle Ball Open and Junior tournament in St Lucia.

The tournament was held at the National Racquet Centre in St Lucia earlier this month after a successful outing in St Vincent and the Grenadines last October.

The team was headed by Coach Andre Erskine, who is also the founder of the Diamond, East Bank Demerara club.

Erskine said that at a time when a lot is being done for the infrastructural development of sports in Guyana, he is

asking the Guyana Government to build a tennis court in the Diamond area.

“We have noticed the work the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is doing for the improvement of sports in Guyana. “ We a r e h o p e f u l t h a t u n d e r Minister Charles Ramson, who has great understanding and Junior Minister in the Sports Ministry Steven Jacobs, who has represented Guyana and the West Indies (U-19) in cricket, and President Ali who seems to have genuine love for sports, the government can construct a tennis court in [the] Diamond area which

has seen great development in other aspects of the economy,” said Coach Erskine, who added that the club boasts most of the top junior players in Guyana. OLLIE Watkins emerged from the bench to spearhead a superb Aston Villa revival as they came from behind to confirm their Premier League title credentials at Chelsea with an 11th successive win in all competitions.

Chelsea deservedly led after 37 minutes when striker Joao Pedro got a vital touch in a goalmouth scramble as Villa tried to clear Reece James’ corner.

Villa, seeking to equal a club record set in both September 1897 and March 1914, had been second best until manager Unai Emery made a triple substitution just before the hour, sending on Watkins, Amadou Onana and Jadon Sancho for Emiliano Buendia, John McGinn and Donyell Malen.

Emery’s golden touch worked inside four minutes as Watkins raced on to Morgan Rogers’ pass, Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez saving at his feet only to see the rebound bounce in off the striker.

Villa was transformed, and it needed crucial saves by Sanchez from Ian Maatsen and Boubacar Kamara to keep Chelsea, who had dominated for so long, on level terms.

However, Chelsea was unable to keep a rampant Villa at bay, Watkins the scorer once more as he rose to power Youri Tielemans’ corner past Sanchez.

West Indies batsmen, bowlers slip in ICC Test rankings DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, (CMC) – There is no West Indies batsman in the top 50 of the ICC’s Test batting rankings following their disappointing performances in the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand.

Shai Hope, who was the lone Windies previously ranked in the top 50, has fallen 11 places to 60th and is the highest ranked batsman from the regional team in the most recent ICC rankings.

Hope, who battled an eye infection in the drawn second Test and food poisoning in the third and final Test, slipped out of the top 50 despite a decent series that saw him score 255 runs at an average of 42.50.

Justin Greaves, the regional team’s highest scorer in the series with 283 runs at an average of 56.60, fell one spot to 62nd in the rankings despite his unbeaten double century in the second Test.

Former West Indies opener, Kraigg Brathwaite, who last featured for the West Indies in July against Australia, is the next highest batter at 65th.

The biggest jumpers on the list for the Windies were Kavem Hodge and Brandon King.

Hodge, who scored an unbeaten 123 in the first innings of the third Test, leapt 11 spots to 66th, while King, who replaced injured opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul and scored half centuries in both innings of the third Test, jumped 27 places and now sits in 73rd position.

John Campbell (75th), Alick Athanaze (76th), Joshua Da Silva (83rd), Chanderpaul (99th) and captain Roston Chase (100th), are the other West Indians on the list.

In the bowling rankings, veteran pacer Kemar Roach, who had climbed to 18th after his impressive performance in the opening Test dropped two spots to 20th, one ahead of the injured Shamar Joseph who did not take part in the series.

Jayden Seales slipped one spot to 25th, while the inactive Alzarri Joseph and spinner Jomel Warrican maintained their rankings at 31st and 32nd respectively. Gudakesh Motie did not move from 65th, while Chase dropped nine spots to 67th. Greaves was the lone West Indies bowler to rise in the rankings, moving up 12 spots to 80th.

Smith hails England’s robust display in Melbourne Test win STEVE Smith showered praise on England following their four-wicket win over Australia in the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne.

Conceding that the tourists snatched the game away from the hosts, Smith told reporters afterwards, “I thought England came out today and played some really good cricket. They got the ball in the right areas and dismissed us.

“And then I thought the way they started with the bat was good. Obviously, they were really aggressive, and tried to break the back of a reasonably small chase on a tricky wicket.

“They got off to a bit of a flier. And a couple of their heavy blows sort of softened our seam quite a bit.

“Probably didn’t offer as much as it had for the rest of the game after that. So credit to them.”

England managed to dismiss Australia twice in two days, folding the hosts for 152 and 132 in the two innings.

Having been set a target of 175 on day two, the visitors managed to chase down the total in 32.2 overs, with four wickets to spare.

Smith believes that it was England’s aggressive batting strategy that aided them to turn things around after three successive losses in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship series.

“The guy with the most success on that wicket was probably Harry Brook.

Running down the wicket, playing some rogue shots, and trying to get the bowlers off their lengths,” he said.

Brook was the leading run-getter for England in the first innings - notching a q u i c k f i r e 4 1 o ff 3 4 deliveries. The England batting sensation was also unbeaten in the middle as they wrapped up a famous win.

Alzarri and Shamar could be back for T20 World Cup

ALZARRI Joseph and Shamar Joseph could both be back in West Indies colours for next year’s T20 World Cup. The fast bowlers, key members of the West Indies pace attack, missed the Caribbean side’s recent red and whiteball tours of India, Bangladesh and New Zealand because of injury. Alzarri Joseph has been sidelined by a lower back injury, while Shamar Joseph is suffering from a shoulder problem.

However, giving an update on the pair during the Mason and Guest programme on the Voice of Barbados, Tuesday, CEO of Cricket West Indies, Chris Dehring, said both players were making progress.

“Alzarri is a little better than Shamar,” Dehring said.

“Alzarri is back training and hopefully he will be back to full fitness. He’s looking much better.”

Dehring added that, “there’s a strong possibility they both will be available for the World Cup, but there’s a stronger possibility for Alzarri than Shamar. But we’re hopeful.

They’re both working, they are getting treated and building up strength, doing some fitness work, so hopefully they’ll both be available.”

Next year’s World Cup will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. West Indies are in Group ‘C’ along with England, Bangladesh, Nepal and Italy. (Daily Express)

Though the hosts had already locked away the urn after three straight victories in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide, Ben Stokes’s men gave their travelling army of fans a consolation prize for staying loyal through the depths of a mostly dismal tour.

Their nerves were jangling when England were reduced to 165 for six, 10 runs short of victory, but Harry Brook (18 not out) and Jamie Smith (three not out) held on, with the winning run taken with four leg byes off pace bowler Mitchell Starc.

It was England’s first Test victory in Australia since the 2010/11 Ashes, when Andrew Strauss’s team thumped the hosts by an innings and 83 runs in the fifth match of the series at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

For Stokes and long-time comrade Joe Root, winless in Ashes tours dating back to 2013/14, it was a day of joy and relief.

“This win does mean a lot. Been over here a few times and not managed to get a win,” Stokes told reporters.

CRICKET Australia (CA) CEO Todd Greenberg said that “short Tests are bad for business” and admitted to a sleepless night following a 20-wicket day on Boxing Day despite a record crowd.

CA had been hoping to break crowd records across the entire Boxing Day Test between Australia and England despite the series being over given the number of presold tickets across the first three days and the unprecedented demand across the series.

But having lost in the vicinity of AUD$5 million (US$3.3 million) for the two-day Test in Perth after 19 wickets fell on day one there, CA are staring another massive loss in the face if the MCG Test ends inside six sessions despite a record crowd of 94,199 on day one and another sell-out on day two. Speaking on SEN prior to the start of day two, Greenberg was asked whether 20 wickets in a day was too many.

“The short answer for that in my opinion is yes,” Greenberg said. “As mesmerising and fascinating and enjoyable as it was to watch as a fan, we want Test cricket clearly to go for longer. “A simple phrase I’d use is short Tests are bad for business. I can’t be much more blunt than that. So I would like to see a slightly broader balance between the bat and the ball. I thought yesterday slightly favoured the ball. The batters have some ownership in

A raft of former players, turned pundits, were critical of the MCG surface on day one with suggestions it was far too much in favour of the seamers. “Historically we have taken a hands-off approach in all of our wicket preparation and allowed the staff and the conditions and those characteristics to be presented,” Greenberg said. “But it’s hard not to get more involved when you see the impact on the sport, particularly commercially.

“I’m not suggesting we’re going to go around talking to ground staff, but we do have to have a careful eye on what our expectations are over the course of a summer.

CA have already had to do some costcutting inside their business this year, making several staff in their administration redundant, while looking for cost savings in other areas including high performance.
