Continued focus on enhancing public services, expanding economic opportunities - improving living standards of all Guyanese in 2026, President Ali says in message to the nation PRESIDENT Dr Mo hamed Irfaan Ali has outlined an agenda for 2026 centred on strengthening public services, expanding economic opportunities, and ensuring that national growth translates more directly into improved living standards for all Guyanese.

“My fellow Guyanese, Happy New Year!

Wherever this New Year finds you, in your homes and communities, on our rivers and coastlands, in our hinterland villages, on duty guarding our borders, patrolling our streets, caring for the sick, and to those across the seas who carry Guyana in their hearts as part of our cherished diaspora, I greet you with gratitude, affection, and pride.

Tonight, I speak to you not only as your President, but as a fellow Guyanese, one who believes deeply in the strength of our people and the promise of our land.

To every citizen, in every village, town, city, and settlement, I extend my warmest wishes for peace, health, and prosperity in the year ahead.

As the first light of 2026 rises over our rivers and plains, I invite you to pause, just for a moment, and reflect on how far we have come.

Guyana’s story is no longer written in the language of potential alone.

It is now written in the language of progress made real of opportunity seized, of a nation stepping confidently into its moment. We are not merely turning a

page; we are writing a new chapter in our history. And its opening lines are bold.

In 2025, amid global uncertainty and the cloud hanging over the Essequibo region of our beloved land, we did not falter. We moved forward—steadily, purposefully, together.

Our economy expanded with remarkable momentum, but more importantly, growth was converted into tangible improvements in the daily lives and future security of our people.

It was seen in new schools and modern classroo ms we lcoming our children. In clean water flowing from new treatment plants and wells. In increased incomes that strengthened household security. In hospitals, expanding and modernising to care for our people. In safer streets, where serious crime receded. In wider opportunities for women and young people. In improved support for pensioners and persons with disabilities. In new investments, meeting our energy needs. And, in the Demerara Harbour Bridge, standing as a symbol of a more connected nation, open to all.

The Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge is a symbol of this new Guyana.

It is a symbol of the transformation that is taking place.

These are not statistics or slogans. They are the lived experience of a country on the move.

That shared journey found its clearest affirmation in the will of the people.

In 2025, Guyana held general and regional elections that reaffirmed to the world that our democracy is alive, resilient, and strengthening. The results delivered a clear mandate to continue the work of

inclusive growth, shared prosperity, national transformation, and unity.

Now, as we look ahead, the horizon before us is wide and filled with possibility. In 2026, we anticipate continued strong economic growth, but our focus is deeper than numbers.

Th i s y ea r, w e w ill change how growth serves you. Public services will be improved through a national digital backbone, making interactions with government simpler, faster, and more transparent. Services will continue to move closer to communities, so efficiency is not an aspiration, but a daily reality.

This year, national prosperity will translate more directly into personal and community advancement.

We will increase disposable income through direct support, higher wages, and reduced taxation. A modern national E-ID system will simplify access to services.

We will accelerate housing development, building a nation of homeowners grounded in security and dignity.

Communities will benefit from better roads, lighting, playgrounds, and sporting facilities. We will strengthen manufacturing, expand tourism, and support enterprise. Our Orange Economy will grow as we invest in artists and cultural entrepreneurs—turning creativity into sustainable livelihoods.

We will bring gas to shore to generate cleaner, cheaper electricity. New hospitals and water treatment plants will expand healthcare and water access. Road safety will be improved through firm enforcement and modern technology. And our Disciplined Services will receive greater resources, training, and technology to protect our people and our borders.

These are not promises for some distant future.

These are plans already in motion.

But no nation can truly rise unless its young people rise with it.

To the young people of Guyana, I say this plainly: you matter, you are needed, and you belong at the centre of our national life.

Your energy, creativity, discipline, and ambition are strengths to be developed.

We are committed to bringing our youth fully into the mainstream of national life through education and skills, through entrepreneurship and employment, through culture, sport, technology, and service.

We call you to a life of productivity not as a burden, but as a pathway to dignity, independence, and prosperity. In building your future, you are building Guyana’s future. And this nation will walk with you as you do so.

In this spirit, I make a personal pledge to you, the people of Guyana. As your President, I pledge to govern with integrity, discipline, and compassion.

To listen before I decide, to act with fairness, and to place the national interest above all else.

I pledge to guard our resources carefully, to expand opportunity relentlessly, and to ensure that development reaches every region and every community. I pledge to defend our sovereignty, protect our people, and uphold the peaceful resolution of all matters in accordance with international law while working every day to unite, not divide, our nation. I will hold myself to that pledge, as my commitment to you, the beautiful people of Guyana.

As we move forward, optimism must be matched with vigilance. The world remains unsettled, and tensions beyond our borders can test even strong nations.

We will therefore remain prudent, prepared, and alert, protecting our homeland, supporting our security services, and preserving peace through diplomacy, readiness, part-

nership with our allies and national unity.

It is because we are prepared that we move forward with confidence, not fear.

So let us enter this New Year not with timid hope, but with strong conviction.

Let us recognise that we are no longer waiting for opportunity, we are shaping it.

Bring discipline to your dreams, purpose to your labour, and faith to your efforts, k n o w i n g t ha t y o u r country is committing its resources, its energy, and its resolve to uplift you.

Together, we have already proven our strength.

Now let us prove our endurance. Let us build not only wealth, but comfort, not only success, but legacy. Let the future not be a distant promise. Let it be the firm ground beneath our feet on which we take, together, every step to prosperity and a better life for all.

As we move forward, let optimism be our compass and unity our shield.

Division weakens; unity builds. Choose cooperation over cynicism, belief over doubt, and purpose over fear.

To every Guyanese, I say this: as our nation rises, may your aspirations rise with it. May 2026 be the year your plans take root and flourish.

Those administered the oath of office at the ceremony, which was held at the Office of the President, were Doodmatie Singh, Shafiran Bhajan, Joan Davis-Monkhouse, Lancelot Baptiste, Satti Jaisieriisingh, Mayda Persaud and Saddam Hussain.

During a brief address, President Dr. Irfaan Ali highlighted the critical role of the Teaching Service Commission in shaping the future of Guyana’s education system, stressing that effective governance is fundamental to national development.

“The Future of Guyana's

education system does not begin in the classroom alone.

It begins with trust in institutions that govern those who teach. The Teaching Service Commission is one such institution,” the President said.

He explained that the Commission holds a wide-ranging constitutional mandate that impacts teachers, students and the education system as a whole.

According to the Head of State, “it is entrusted with safeguarding integrity, professionalism and fairness of the teaching profession”.

President Ali further noted that members of the Commission carry a responsibility that extends across the country, stating that their work reaches all schools, touches all teachers and shapes the character capacity of the nation.

President Ali emphasised that the Teaching Service Commission was deliberately established as an independent constitutional body to ensure fairness and transparency within the education system.

Against this backdrop, he said, “The teaching Service Commission is intended to be [an] independent Constitutional Commission,” and added that this independence is essential to protecting the profession from undue influence.

He went on to note that an independent Commission ensures decisions are made based on merit, fairness and due process, noting that this helps to strengthen professionalism within the teaching service and build confidence among educators that they will be treated justly.

Meanwhile, the President

said the administration has embarked on one of the most extensive investments in education in Guyana’s history.

He noted that this investment goes beyond physical infrastructure to focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning.

“Today, in the government, we have embarked on one of the largest investment in the education sector, investment, not only in buildings, but investment in the quality of teachers, in access to textbooks, in equitable access to every area of speciality in the education system and to the modernisation of education system through the Guyana digital school serving the entire Caribbean,” he said.

President Ali also pointed to improvements in teachers’ welfare, working conditions

and opportunities for professional growth. He said the government is committed to ensuring educators are able to advance more quickly within the system.

“My government is very clear that not only are we concerned about the improvement in the welfare, working environment, and conditions of service for our teachers, but we want to see them having access to accelerated opportunities,” he said.

As part of this approach, the President revealed that thousands of senior positions are being filled or newly created to support upward mobility within the profession.

“For example, 2700 senior vacancies to be filled.

Now, these are not senior vacancies that exist in the system in a traditional way,”

he explained.

He outlined several new posts created across the education system, including second deputy head teachers in Grades A and B secondary schools, deputy head teachers in Grade C primary and secondary schools, and additional senior master and mistress positions in schools nationwide.

“This is 823 senior positions created within the teaching service structure to facilitate the advancement of a teacher's career. These positions did not exist previously,” President Ali said.

He added that the expansion of senior roles will allow more teachers to be promoted, leading to improved salaries, additional benefits and stronger retirement outcomes for educators across the country.

Private commercial, industrial boom reshaping landscape, generating jobs - Minister Singh says WITH Guyana experiencing the largest wave of industrial and commercial boom unmatched at any other point in its history, this surge is fuelling job creation while reshaping the nation’s landscape.

This was highlighted by the Senior Minister within the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, during a recently-aired interview.

As he explained how the construction boom goes beyond public investment, Singh said: “You have private industrial and commercial construction taking place [more] than at any other time in the country's history. You're seeing it. The landscape and the physical face of the country are changing as we speak. There are more factories, more warehouses, more processing plants, more office buildings and office towers going up than we've ever seen before.”

According to the minister, the transformation of Guyana’s landscape through private investments is occurring alongside public sector investments, which are resulting in the construction of state-of-the-art hospitals, schools, bridges and roads.

Public sector investments are also creating thousands of jobs, Singh explained.

Beyond construction, he pointed to the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government’s deliberate and strategic policies, which seek to build a Guyana where citizens can “live, work, earn, save and invest and retire comfortably.”

Last year, President Irfaan Ali reaffirmed that Guyana’s rapid industrial and infrastructural ex-

pansion is strategically positioning the nation as a central player in South America’s emerging regional integration plan.

He had also noted that since taking the helm of Government in 2020, the local private sector has grown significantly, resulting in his government’s commitment to creating more than 60,000 jobs being surpassed.

Pre s iden t A li h ad e m p ha s is ed t ha t ro bu st policies, strategic investments, and a business-friendly environment have fostered u n pa ra ll el ed g ro w t h across multiple sectors, strengthened investor confidence, and created sustainable employment opportunities.

Guyana’s Mid-Year Report reflected robust growth across key sectors of the economy. According to the report, credit to the private sector increased by 7.7 per cent to $485.4 billion during the first half of the year.

Lending to the services sector grew by 4.9 percent to $165.6 billion, while manufactu rin g and agriculture recorded growth rates of 12.4 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively. Expansion in the manufacturing sector was driven by lending for construction and

engineering, which rose by 76.9 percent and 8.9 percent, while telecommunications saw a 24.7 per cent increase.

RISING CONFIDENCE & INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION Since returning to office in 2020, the PPP/C

administration has prioritised fosterin g an enabling environment for both large and small businesses, promoting job creation, economic diversification, and sustained non-oil sector growth.

Minister Singh also disclosed that Guyana has attracted more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) than at any other point in its history.

He said: “We have seen more, and this is reflected in FDI inflows and in the establishment of new companies and new businesses that are foreign-owned, that have come to Guyana, that have either set up operations or entered into partnerships with Guyanese companies and set up operations and you see them.

“They’re everywhere.

This is reflected in the growth in domestic private investment. And here again, you see new Guyanese businesses and new Guyanese compa-

nies being set up everywhere, in every single sector and subsector of the economy.”

The FDI, in just two years (2021 to 2023), was also more than three times the FDI that the former APNU+AFC government was ever able to attract during its fiveyear tenure in office.

The PPP/C gover n m e n t’s e ff o rt s t o strengthen public-private partnerships, modernise infrastructure, and diversify the economy have been pivotal in catalysing the nation’s investment boom.

However, the government has also been keen to ensure that the benefits of this influx of capital are felt across the economy, and notably, the expansion of the private sector, driven by foreign investments, is generating thousands of jobs and contributing to an overall improvement in the standard of living for Guyanese citizens.

Celebration, culture and the work ahead

AS Guyana approaches its 60th Independence anniversary, the government has signalled that the milestone will be marked not only with celebration, but with a strategic effort to reshape how culture, creativity and national identity contribute to economic development.

President, Dr Irfaan Ali’s recent comments frame the anniversary as both a symbolic homecoming for the diaspora and a practical starting point for expanding the country’s creative, or “Orange,” economy.

The emphasis on culture, tourism, film and entertainment reflects a growing recognition that economic diversification cannot rely solely on traditional sectors.

Around the world, cre-

ative industries have become meaningful sources of employment, foreign exchange and soft power.

Guyana’s challenge will be to ensure that investment in these areas produces lasting structures, skills training, financing, distribution channels and intellectual property protection, rather than shortlived spectacles tied only to anniversary celebrations.

The President’s call for major investments in a local film industry, entertainment hubs and structured income opportunities for artistes speaks to long-standing gaps in how creative work is valued and monetised.

For decades, Guyanese artistes and cultural practitioners have operated largely on the margins, with limited access to sustainable mar-

kets.

If the anniversary year is to serve as a genuine launchpad, policies must prioritise fair compensation, professional development and access to regional and international audiences.

I n fr as t r u ct u re pl a ns linked to the celebrations, including redevelopment of the Georgetown seawall, new green spaces, cultural corridors and heritage tours, point to a broader attempt to integrate culture into urban renewal and tourism development.

Proposals such as transforming Lamaha Street into a living historical corridor suggest an effort to make history visible and accessible, particularly for younger generations and visitors.

The long-term value of

these projects will depend on maintenance, thoughtful design and community involvement, rather than cosmetic upgrades alone.

Equally notable is the invitation to the private sector to align corporate social investment with the creative economy.

While private support can play a vital role, it should complement, not replace, clear public policy frameworks.

S us tainable c reat ive industries require predictable funding mechanisms, transparent governance and strong institutions, not reliance on one-off sponsorships.

Beyond culture and celebration, the President has linked the anniversary to a broader national mind-

set around productivity and wealth creation.

The reminder that rising incomes should not coincide with declining work ethic reflects a real concern as Guyana’s economy expands rapidly.

Tra ns la ting na tiona l growth into household-level opportunity will require discipline, skills development and inclusive participation, particularly for young people and hinterland communities.

The wider slate of projects outlined-- new airports, energy facilities, manufacturing plants and data centres-- underscores the administration’s view of the anniversary as a bridge between the country’s past and its next phase of development.

These initiatives, however, will be judged not by their ambition, but by their execution and by how evenly their benefits are shared.

Guyana’s 60th Independence anniversary offers a rare moment for reflection and recalibration.

If treated merely as a celebration, its impact will fade quickly. If approached as a point of convergence, where culture, policy and investment align with clear purpose, it could help shape a more diversified, confident and inclusive economy.

The task now is to ensure that symbolism is matched by substance, and that the promise of this milestone translates into durable gains for all Guyanese.

Guyana is also moving into large-scale production of black-eyed peas and red beans, supported by sustained public investment in drainage and irrigation

and the opening up of new agricultural lands.

According to President Ali, these measures have helped restore confidence in the agriculture sector and have attracted international interest.

He said investors are now pursuing opportunities in large-scale swine and livestock production, as well as in sugar refining at the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO), the re-development of the Skeldon Estate, ethanol production, mega farms, hydroponic and vertical farming projects.

President Ali attributed this growing interest to Guyana’s policy direction. He said the country is now regarded as having a serious policy agenda, a supportive investment ecosystem

and a range of incentives that encourage food production and agricultural development.

The President also pointed to significant growth in agricultural lending as further evidence of confidence in the sector. Loans from the banking system to agriculture and food production, he said, have increased sharply, driven by public investment in infrastructure and drainage and irrigation systems.

“That tells you the story that not only were we able to increase production, but we have been able to drive investment and create a business model in food production and agriculture that is globally attractive today,” the President said.

This is President Ali’s style. Look what a wealthy Guyanese man said about the President’s mother, and there was no cussing down from Dr. Ali. Wellknown anti-government critics showed no decency and joined in the libelous treatment of the President’s mother. There was not even a reaction from President Ali. A prominent American social media influencer wrote negative things about the wife of President Macron of France, and he sued the lady. Can you say those things about the mother of the prime minister or president in any other country without facing the wrath of the state?

It is this style, this tem-

perament of Mohammed Irfaan Ali that brought him easy re-election last year.

When I say that sometimes I feel sorry for the president, it is because you are annoyed at the unconscionable nature of some of his detractors.

In the coming days when I look at Guyana in 2025, I am going to reserve harsh words for the mother, father, and aunt of Adrianna Younge for what they did to President Ali. I don’t care what they say in response on social media. If those three persons know me, they would know I will not even blink an eye at any damning thing they say about me. For me they are not worth even a paragraph of reply. Cussing me out has no psychological, emotional, or scientific effect on me. Never did, never will!

The president of the

country went down to the Younge home twice and consoled them and put his government at their disposal in investigating what happened to the child. They turned around, insulted the president by using their own daughter’s and niece’s death for sordid political purposes.

They are unfit to be part of modern society. This was not the way to treat a president who cared about them.

In 2026, let’s give Jack his jacket. President Ali deserves national acknowledgement for his genuine service to the Guyanese nation.

- President Ali says THE Guyana Defence Force will be further integrated into the country’s economy with the establishment of a commercial arm of the military apparatus to support regional trade and food production.

This is according to President Dr Irfaan Ali, who, during an interview with journalists and students on Tuesday said that this initiative is among several that are being examined to propel the country’s agriculture and food ecosystem.

“We are now working on a commercial arm of the Guyana Defence Force to integrate our food production with that of the CARICOM market,” the

President said.

In addition to this, President Ali said he met recently with the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, during which discussions highlighted interest from a group of young Antiguan entrepreneurs who are investing in transportation capacity and are looking to Guyana as a potential supplier of food to the island.

To this end, he noted that Guyana is on track to become a significant exporter of food to the Caribbean, citing major increases in agricultural production and growing investor confidence in the sector.

If I was one of his advisers, obviously I would tell him what he knows already and what he knows he has to do – ignore those who cannot see further than their nose; ignore the ignorant who will always remain ignorant. But you cannot help feeling a bit sorry for him.

In a world of global leaders whose mediocrity and flaws are larger than the world’s oceans, President Ali stands out positively, yet some of his citizens over the past five years cannot praise him for some outstanding achievements. Comparatively speaking in a global context, Guyana has a good president that wants to do good for his subjects, and he is doing good.

Go down the list and isolate one Prime Minister or President that is above Dr. Ali in terms of being a popular leader that has national reach that is ex-

panding rather than shrinking. Go down the list and isolate a Prime Minister and President whose democratic instincts are on display and who rise above those of Dr. Ali. Go down the list and name me a president or prime minister whose tolerance for criticism and bad mouthing of the president or prime minister is larger than Dr. Ali’s.

Guyana’s president is way ahead of the flock of Western countries whose leadership qualities have never been so degenerate compared to the past 100 years. Look at Canada under Justin Trudeau, the US after Obama, Europe especially in France, Germany and Italy and the UK. This is why I say I feel sorry sometimes for President Ali because he deserves praise instead of condemnation from those who do not support him. Compare Dr. Ali with the rest of his counterparts in the world in terms of democratic toler-

ance. All these leaders will conspire to hurt journalists, academics, political voices, students, and other sectors of the citizenry for criticising Israel and for saying that there is genocide in Gaza.

Look at what the world sees in Europe and the US today, and when we look, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali stands way above them.

In a country where the head of state and head of government are slanderously attacked by vicious people, show me the descent to the gutter by Dr. Ali. He simply doesn’t engage in cuss down politics, where the detractors of the head of government love to be vicious.

Go to the Facebook pages of all his detractors, go to Village Voice, Stabroek News, and Kaieteur News and the viciousness is relentless, but he doesn’t descend to the gutter. He doesn’t even fight back. There was a Prime Minister in the Caribbean, Tom Adams of Barbados, who would “buse”

For generations, residents of Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo, Region Three, lived on lands without formal home ownership, which posed many challenges. On Wednesday, Decem ber 31, the final day of 2025, President Ali removed those challenges, presenting residents with legal ownership of the lands they’ve called home for decades.

Beaming with pride and joy, Prakash Indar said that he had dreamed of this precise moment for a very long time.

“We have waited such a long time for this [land title], but now that I have m y title, I know that I was not waiting in vain. I’m so happy,” Indar said.

Describing the moment as the end of a decades-long struggle for legal ownership and a new beginning for families entering the New Year with renewed hope and opportunity, President Ali himself

presented the legal documents to the residents at State House.

“For generations, many people died without having ownership.

You could not have gotten the value of the land,” President Ali said, recalling years of legal, administrative and boundary challenges that stalled the process.

He noted that the regularisation initiative began as far back as 2009, with block and occupational surveys completed, but progress was h alted bet ween 2015 and 2020 when the previous administration abandoned the process.

Upon returning to office in 2020, the government reignited the process, issuing allocation letters and agreements of sale and moving forward into the critical second phase to secure titles.

Wednesday outlined the Government of Guyana’s social development priorities for

the next five years, describing a people-centred agenda focused on inclusion, human capital development and improved access to services for vulnerable groups.

Speaking during a broadcast, Minister Persaud said the agenda, as presented by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, is intended to guide national development beyond economic growth and place greater emphasis on what she described as “human infrastructure.”

She noted that the plan targets children, families, women, senior citizens and persons living with disabilities, as Guyana approaches 2026.

“Our mission is to continue to build a nation where every citizen, regardless of their starting point in life, has a clear and accessible path to a better quality of life,” Persaud said, adding that the ministry is positioned to build on programmes implemented over the past five years.

Acc ord in g to the minister, priority areas will include support for vulnerable populations through both traditional public assistance and expanded social programmes.

She pointed to initiatives such as t he Women’s Innovation and Investment Network (WIIN), launched in 2021, which she said has supported thousands of women annu-

ally, and training programmes for persons with disabilities that currently serve more than 400 participants each year at no cost.

Persaud also highlighted ongoing efforts to address social challenges, including gender-based and family violence, child abuse and human trafficking.

She said the government plans to expand Hope and Justice Centres to all regions over the next five years, providing survivors with access to shelter, counselling, legal aid and medical support. In addition, digital tools, including upgrades to the iMatter mobile application, will be further developed to provide rapid assistance to persons at risk.

Support for senior citizens and other vulnerable groups is also expected to increase.

Persaud noted that the President has committed to incremental increases in old-age pensions to $16,000 per month over five years, while public assistance is to rise to $14,000 per month. She said improvements in digital systems will reduce processing times and allow beneficiaries to apply for and track benefits online from 2026.

The minister outlined additional measures aimed at improving service delivery, including expanded home

delivery of pension books for bedridden beneficiaries, wider use of electronic payment options, and alternative cash-out locations to reduce long queues.

Programmes such as the Golden Generation initiative and the Centenarian Club are also expected to continue and expand.

Targets include the creation of 5,000 specialised jobs by 2030, mandatory allocation of space for disability services in new government buildings, and the establishment of special education needs facilities in every administrative region.

Police investigating death of 53-year-old man at South Ruimveldt residence POLICE are investigating the circumsta nces surrounding the death of a 53-year-old man who was found unresponsive at his home in South Ruimveldt on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Anthony M athurin, an unemployed resident of Greenheart Street, South Ruimveldt. According to preliminary po lice info rm ation, Mathurin’s death is believed to have occurred between 21:40hrs and 23:45hrs on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

Investigators reported that Mathurin, who was said to have been suffering from an ill-

ness, was discovered lying motionless in the yard of his residence by relatives. Emergency Medi cal Technicians were summoned to the scene, and he was subsequently pron ounc ed d ead by a doctor on duty.

The body was later escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Police said CCTV cameras were observed in the area and will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

S everal individu als have been questioned, but no arrests have

been made.

Investigations into the matter are continuing.

Assessment to strengthen gold mining sector to begin next week - President Ali A FULL assessment of gold mining activities is set to take place on January 5, signalling potential policy changes in the country’s mining sector, President Dr Irfaan Ali has announced.

Speaking during an interview with journalists and students on Tuesday, the Head of State said the assessment is expected to examine compliance, operational practices, and the flow of gold sales, particularly focusing on traders

and miners who sell outside the state-run gold board.

“So, on the 5th of January, there will be a complete assessment of every single miner and every single trader, and strong decisions will be made. We want them to be selling to the gold board, but all of these incentives have kept production going."

He stressed that stringent actions will be taken.

“We are going to link the mercury they buy with their declarations; if they have land that they are working on (and) they have dredges registered, but there is no declaration, we’re going to repossess those lands because there is no sense in them destroying the environment and it’s not being used.’

Last month, President Ali had said that his government would pursue and shut down delinquent operators who continue to

exploit state incentives while failing to declare their gold.

According to the Ministry of Finance’s mid-year report, gold declaration is up by 10.9 percent this year, but Dr Ali stressed that this remains below the government’s expectations.

He had emphasised then that miners who profit from the sector have a legal responsibility to accurately declare their gold, reminding them that this duty is “not by choice, but by law.”

The President added that the government intends to overhaul systems that have enabled chronic under-declaration and illegal exports, stating that the state must stop facilitating “those kinds of people.”

One gold smuggler alone, he noted, stole more than $190 billion from the Guyanese economy.

The event formed part of a continuing partnership aimed at strengthening bi-

lateral cultural ties and promoting artistic collaboration. It was the second joint initiative between UG and the Colombian Embassy in recent months, following a series of theatrical workshops and performances held in October.

Those earlier activities included a visit by Colombian playwright and actress Marilyn Leonor Biscaino Miller, who conducted collaborative workshops with UG students and members of the local theatre community.

Her visit also featured public performances at the National Cultural Centre and presentations on theatre traditions in Colombia and Guyana at an opening ceremony at the World Trade Centre.

The December 1 programme opened with a presentation and interactive session led by the Colombian Ambassador, focusing on Colombia’s Indigenous heritage and musical traditions. The evening then transitioned into a showcase of Guyanese performers,

including University of Guyana students Gabrielle Burgess and Marshall De Souza, along with performances by the Kreative Arts Dance Group, Xcellence Band, Christian Sobers, Victor Corro, Mark Hall, The Messengers and other local artistes.

Following the performances, certificates of participation were awarded to attendees of the October theatrical workshop as well as performers involved in the Fusion Cultural Evening, marking the continuity of the

collaborative programme.

Colombian Ambassador, His Excellency Graybern Livingston Forbes, said the embassy was keen to expand future engagements with the University of Guyana, noting the value of sustained cultural exchange in strengthening regional partnerships and artistic development.

UG officials said the initiative aligns with the university’s broader commitment to fostering intercultural dialogue and community engagement through the arts.

The collaboration also supports UG’s plans to establish four Centres of Excellence in the Humanities within the Faculty of Education and Humanities, aimed at advancing education, research and cultural diplomacy.

Parika Port facility to unlock new economic opportunities for Guyana - Min Edghill AS the first phase of construction begins to transform the current Parika Stelling into an International Port facility, Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, said the project will unlock new and major economic opportunities for Guyana.

During a live broadcast on Monday, Minister Edghill said the upgraded Parika Terminal is intended to play a central role in regional trade, tourism and waterfront development.

He explained that the new port facility will be positioned to support exports to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), creating direct access to new markets for local farmers.

“It is from the Parika Terminal that we want to be able to engage the CARICOM trade of taking our produc e to CA R IC OM nations, which means opening up markets for our farmers,” Minister Edghill said.

He added that the port will cater to marine tourism, with plans for a dedicated mariners’ facility to accommodate visiting yachts in a safe and regulated environment.

The public works minister said the Ministry of Agriculture and the Fisheries Department are also being en gage d to supp ort agro-processing activities near the terminal.

“That whole Parika front is part of the development plan, which

will allow us to build out the necessary night entertainment just as you would see in other parts of the world,” he stated.

Minister Edghill described a vision of a clean, organised and modern terminal replacing what he said is currently a “disjointed” and confusing environment for visitors unfamiliar with the area.

The port is also expected to serve as a launch point for jet boats transporting tour-

ists seeking to explore Guyana’s waterways.

Additional infrastructure will include restaurants, adequate sanitary facilities and expanded m oorin g space for roll-on, rolloff vessels.

M i n i s t e r E d g hi l l said that consultations are ongoing with stakeholders to ensure the design meets the needs of multi ple sectors, making the terminal suitable for trade, tourism and transportation.

In addition to the

upgrade, a highway f ro m Sc h oo n or d t o Parika is under construction, with the first set of bridges already awarded and alignment cleared.

The c onst ruct ion is be ing rol le d o u t through the collaborative effort of the Ministry of Housing.

When this highway

Three charged after decomposed body found at Le Repentir Cemetery POLICE have identified t he d e co m p o s ed b o dy found stuffed inside a barrel at the Le Repentir Cemetery on Christmas night as that of 39-year-old Levi Williams, as three men have now been charged with his murder.

According to the Guyana Police Force, investigations indicate that Williams was allegedly killed sometime between the early hours of December 23 and the night of December 25, 2025, at a location on Charlotte Street, Georgetown.

Police said Williams was accused by a group of men of stealing a firearm.

As a result, he was reportedly restrained at a suspected drug block in the Charlotte Street area, where he was severely beaten with wire. Investigators allege that Williams became helpless during the assault and was subsequently placed into a blue plastic bag.

Further inquiries revealed that the victim was then loaded into the back of a motor bus and transported to the Le Repentir Cemetery.

His body was later dumped inside a barrel along a section of the cemetery between Louisa Row and St. Stephen

Street.

The body was discovered at approximately 23:40 hours on December 25. Police not-

ed that, at the time of discovery, Williams was clad only in a short blue pants. His head was found inside the barrel, while his feet were protruding.

Following their investigations, police charged three men with murder. They are Randy Mars, also known as “Ratty,” a 42-year-old unemployed resident of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway; Aaron Khan, also known as “Tattoo Man,” a 29-year-old unemployed resident of Charlotte Street and Jamal David, also known

as “Hundred,” a 44-year-old unemployed resident of West Ruimveldt.

Police said two additional suspects are being sought in connection with the matter, as investigations continue.

The discovery of the body and subsequent charges have sent shockwaves through the community, with police reiterating their commitment to pursuing all those involved and ensuring accountability under the law.

Demerara Criminal Assizes close year with 36 cases disposed - Guilty pleas, acquittals, jury convictions & discontinued cases dominate proceedings

THE October 2025 Criminal Assizes for Demerara concluded the year with a complex mix of guilty pleas, jury convictions, acquittals, and matters discontinued by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The Demerara Assizes commenced on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the High Court in Demerara.

A total of 143 cases were listed to be heard before Acting Chief Justice Navindra Singh, Justice Gino Persaud, Justice Damone Younge, and Justice Jacqueline Josiah-Graham.

During the course of these proceedings, the State successfully disposed of 36

cases. Of these, 24 were presented before judge and jury in the High Court. The matters involved a broad spectrum of serious offences, including 19 for murder, two for attempted murder, one for manslaughter, and two for sexual offences.

Twelve matters were discontinued by the DPP, a decision often prompted by the unavailability of key witnesses, complainants declining to testify, or, in one case, the death of a principal witness. Across the Assizes, a total of 26 accused persons were involved. The outcomes included 16 guilty pleas, three convictions, five formal not-guilty verdicts, and one jury acquittal.

State prosecutors Simran Gajraj, Christopher Belfield, and Geneva Wills were instrumental in completing 12 matters before Acting Chief Justice Singh.

Nine of these were for the offence of murder, while one each concerned manslaughter, attempted murder, and the rape of a child under 16 years.

In eight of the murder trials, the accused pleaded guilty. Three accused pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter; one received a seven-year sentence, while the other two were each sentenced to five years after the court considered deductions for time spent on remand and

their guilty pleas.

In a separate trial involving two accused indicted together for murder in the furtherance of robbery, the court handed down respective sentences of 20 and 27 years imprisonment. Additional murder trials concluded with varied sentencing outcomes, including life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 28 years, as well as terms of 15, 18, and 24 years.

In another matter, the trial judge upheld a no-case submission and directed the jury to return formal not-guilty verdicts for an accused indicted for murder with alternative counts for attempted murder and felonious

wounding. Similarly, in one attempted murder trial, the complainant declined to proceed, resulting in a notguilty verdict.

Manslaughter and sexual offence trials in Demerara also progressed during the Assizes. In the manslaughter matter, the accused pleaded guilty as charged and will be sentenced on January 12, 2026. In a sexual offence case, the jury found the accused guilty, with sentencing scheduled for January 21, 2026.

Justice Gino Persaud presided over five murder trials. In three, the accused pleaded guilty to manslaughter; one is scheduled to be sentenced on January 20, 2026, while the other two await sentencing on January 26, 2026. The remaining two trials before Justice Persaud were concluded through no-case submissions upheld by the trial judge, resulting in not-guilty verdicts. Attorneys Padma Dubraj, Praneta Seeraj, and Alvaro Ramotar represented the State in matters heard before Justice Persaud.

Justice Jacqueline Josiah-Graham oversaw six matters, comprising five murder trials and one attempted murder with an alternative count of wounding with intent. In three of the murder trials, the accused pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter, receiving sentences ranging from 25 years, 15 years and 8 months and 12 years imprisonment.

One of the remaining murder trials resulted in a unanimous jury finding of guilt for manslaughter, with the accused sentenced to 18 years. Another accused was acquitted by jury verdict.

In the attempted murder matter, the accused was found unanimously guilty and awaits sentencing in January 2026.

Due to the exigencies of duties, only one sexual offence trial could be conducted in the Sexual Offences Court. In this instance, the complainant declined to testify, and the jury returned a formal notguilty verdict. Attorneys Latifah Elliot, Delon Fraser and Nelissa Peterkin appeared for the prosecution in this case.

Of the 12 matters discontinued by the DPP in Demerara, two were for murder, three for attempted murder, four for sexual offences, two for manslaughter, and one for obtaining money by false pretence.

The complainants in these matters either declined to testify or could not be located and their testimony was the main evidence in the cases; in one case the main witness has since died.

The Demerara January 2026 Criminal Assizes will open on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, with 126 cases listed to be heard before Justice Singh, Justice Persaud, Justice Simone Morris and Justice Hessaun Yasin.

MV Kanawan suffers brief steering issue on Essequibo River - Minister Edghill says Rather than allowing the vessel to drift, the captain manoeuvred the ferry to a safe position along the riverbank, a standard maritime safety procedure commonly referred to as “bracing the bush,” while onboard engineers worked to correct the issue

THE MV Kanawan, which operates on the Parika–Supenaam ferry route, experienced a brief steering malfunction on Wednesday while transiting the Essequibo River, but the issue was quickly resolved without incident, according to Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill.

Speaking during a live broadcast, Edghill said the occurrence took place at approximately 12:10hrs during the vessel’s third scheduled trip for the day, as it was en route to Supenaam near Wakenaam. He explained that the ferry encountered a temporary problem with its steering system.

Rather than allowing the vessel to drift, the captain manoeuvred the ferry to a safe position along the riverbank, a standard maritime safety procedure commonly referred to as “bracing the bush,” while onboard engineers worked to correct the issue.

“The captain acted decisively and followed established safety protocols,” Edghill said, noting that engineers restored full steering control within about five minutes. According to the minister, the issue was resolved by approximately 12:15hrs.

Following the repair, the MV Kanawan resumed its voyage and arrived safely at the Supenaam Stelling shortly after 13:00hrs. All passengers and crew remained safe throughout the brief interruption.

Edghill commended the captain and crew for their professionalism and training, emphasising that their prompt response prevented any escalation. He also addressed reports circulating on social media, cautioning that some accounts overstated the seriousness of the incident.

“The situation was handled quickly and efficiently,” the minister said, adding that the ferry remained fully operational and was prepared to undertake its return trip to Parika later the same day.

Four charged, remanded in cocaine trafficking case

The twenty-seven brick-like parcels, each containing a quantity of cocaine FOUR individuals were, on Wednesday, remanded to prison following court appearances arising from a major cocaine seizure by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) earlier this week, on the East Coast of Demerara.

Andre Moonilall and Sherwin Laundry appeared before Magistrate Nurse at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court No. 1, where they each pleaded not guilty to possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, involving 31.452 kilograms of cocaine. Bail was denied, and both men were remanded to prison until February 9, 2026.

In a related matter before the same court, Jermin Ad-

ams and Amanda Lam were charged with aiding in the trafficking of the same quantity of cocaine. They also pleaded not guilty. Bail was similarly denied, and both were remanded to prison until February 9, 2026.

The charges stem from a CANU operation conducted on Monday, December 29, 2025, in the vicinity of Broad Street, Montrose, East Coast Demerara. According to information released by the agency, CANU officers, acting on intelligence received, intercepted a motor vehicle in the area. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered twenty-seven brick-like parcels, each containing a quantity of cocaine.

firmed that the seized narcotics amounted to a total weight of 31.452 kilograms.

Moonilall, Adams, Laundry, and Lam were arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

Investigation is ongoing.

CANU has maintained that the interception forms part of its ongoing efforts to disrupt organised drug trafficking networks operating locally and across borders.

Large cocaine seizures of this magnitude, the agency has previously noted, are often linked to transnational trafficking routes.

The matters are scheduled to return to court on February 9, 2026, when further proceedings are expected.

Economic policy focused on improving lives, not just growth - Finance Minister says HAVING completed his first term since his return as Finance Minister in 2020, and being part of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government that has successfully managed an economy that continues to grow exponentially while the country’s landscape has transformed at a rapid pace, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, during an interview with the National

Communications Network (NCN), explained that the growth in the country’s economy has been reflected in the creation of economic opportunity for Guyanese in every single sector.

“Everybody who is in economic policy aspires to a situation where your economy is growing. This is the objective of economic policy makers all over the world, but it is also important that that growth translates into improved well-being to the

citizens whom you serve.

Growth is not an end. It is really the means to a bigger end which is the improvement of the circumstances and lives of people,” Minister Singh posited as he reflected on government’s success over the last years with this year’s Mid-Year report showing strong economic growth, with an estimated 7.5 percent overall real GDP growth in the first half, driven by a 13.8 percent expansion in the nonoil economy.

“Certainly, we have seen very strong economic growth both in the overall economy and also in the non-oil economy, having grown at an average in excess of 10 percent, in the vicinity of 11 percent since 2021, reflecting the fact that that incorporates the benefits in the oil and gas sector along with the creation of economic opportunity in every sector,” the Minister highlighted.

Dr Singh explained that there has been more foreign direct investment in the country than at any other time in its history reflected in the establishment of new companies and foreign owned businesses that have come to Guyana as well as those entering into partnerships with Guyanese companies and setting up new businesses in every single sector and sub sector of the economy.

“You see it also in the expansion in the credit to the private sector, which has also grown at astronomical rates, certainly over the last five years, more rapidly than at any other time in our country's history,” Minister Singh further explained.

He noted that these have translated into more economic activity, job creation and income generation resulting in 60,000 more persons being employed over the last five years.

“And that's not a small number. That's a very significant number, and if you think about it, that expansion has occurred in every single sector of the economy. In oil and gas, you probably have in excess of about 6000 or 7000 persons working that were not six or seven years ago; in the tourism and hospitality sector, there are entire brand-new hotels that are in operation, brand-new restaurants in operation that didn’t exist before, in the healthcare sector there are several new hospitals that have been established, more doctors, more nurses, more laboratory technicians, more ambulance

drivers, more pharmacists, so much so that we are unable to find enough of them,” he highlighted.

The finance minister then reminded that government has been training more persons as rapidly as it can to meet the requirements of both the private and public healthcare sector with private hospitals also expanding.

Turning his attention to the construction sector, the minister noted the ongoing construction boom as he explained that this was not only taking place as part of the public sector investment programme (PSIP), but also private industrial and commercial construction with the physical landscape and face of the country continuing to change.

“There are more factories, more warehouses, more processing plants, more office buildings going up than we've ever seen before, so you have private industrial and commercial construction, you have the public sector investment programme, which, of course, are the bridges, roads and hospitals and schools that are being built by government, all of which have created job opportunities. And then of course, you have the household sector. These are homes being built,” Dr Singh further underscored, alluding to the more than 50,000 house lots distributed during government’s first five-year term.

“Many of those house lots are now under construction. Imagine for every single home the number of jobs that will be created, imagine thousands of homes being constructed- carpenters, masons, plumbers, electricians, painters, transportation providers. And I could go on and list sector after sector, and you would see that in literally every sector more people are working,” the Minister added.

The Minister said not only are there more people working because of economic growth but that more people are getting better quality jobs as well.

“And then, of course, we have taken the deliberate policy that we want to make sure that we invest in things that are necessary for people to be able to improve their lives so we are investing heavily as well in human capital development, social services, and in particular, in education and training and skills development,” Minister Singh concluded.

Rice producer eyes Jamaica expansion, donates 20,000 kg for hurricane relief

G U YA N E S E - O W N E D Two Brothers Rice Milling Complex Inc. has announced plans to expand its operations into Jamaica in 2026, as the company also moves to support hurricane relief efforts in the island state.

Chief Executive Officer, Javed Ali, said the proposed expansion will operate under the name Two Ali Brothers Corporation Limited and is intended to deepen the company’s engagement within the Jamaican market while contributing to economic activity through employment and partnerships.

The announcement comes as the Vergenoegen, West Coast Demerara–based company donated more than 20,000 kilograms of rice to assist Jamaican communities affected by Hurricane Melissa. The storm caused widespread damage, leaving many families facing food shortages and ongoing recovery challenges.

“We at Two Brothers Rice Milling Complex are deeply moved by the strength and resilience of the Jamaican people in the wake of Hurricane Melissa,” Ali said.

“It is our honour to contribute to the relief efforts and to stand in solidarity with communities as they rebuild their lives.”

R3PSInc commends security forces for peaceful holidays - urges end to traffic harassment

HEAD of Region Three Private Sector Inc. (R3PSInc), Halim Khan, has praised the security sector for maintaining a low-crime environment during the recent Christmas and New Year holidays, while calling

on authorities to address ongoing issues of traffic police harassment on key roadways.

Speaking on developments in Region Three, Khan highlighted that the low crime rate reflected stronger collaboration be-

tween law enforcement agencies and communities, as well as improved morale among police officers.

“The level of crime during the holidays was noticeably low, and that is something the securi-

ty forces deserve credit for,” Khan said. “We also saw stronger co-operation from communities, which plays a critical role in crime prevention.”

Khan attributed the enhanced performance of the police to recent pro-

motions, incentives, and leadership improvements.

He specifically acknowledged the initiative

by Commander-in-Chief, President Dr. Irfan Ali, who promoted numerous ranks within the force, including officers who had served as constables for more than 15 years.

“President Ali’s promotion of ranks must be recognised and recorded in history,” Khan said.

“Since the creation of the Guyana Police Force, it is unprecedented to see so many young officers rising from one stripe to inspector. This has injected energy and professionalism across the force, and the impact is clear in their performance.”

While commending the broader security effort, Khan raised concerns over the conduct of some traffic officers along major corridors linking Region Three to Georgetown, including areas near the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge. Motorists have reported repeated stops, poorly positioned roadblocks, and unnecessary delays, especially during peak hours, which contribute to congestion and commuter frustration.

“Traffic enforcement should be about assistance and safety, not harassment,” he said. “Stopping vehicles without clear cause, particularly in poorly lit or congested areas, only worsens traffic flow and creates unnecessary tension.”

Khan noted that drivers coming from the second roundabout near the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge into Region Three, as well as those using internal alternative routes, often encounter repeated stops that disrupt travel and commerce.

He emphasised that while roadblocks and traffic checks remain essential for crime prevention, they should be intelligence-led, clearly marked, well-lit, and strategically placed to ensure transparency and public confidence. “ T h er e i s n o t h i n g wrong with enforcement, but it must be professional, visible, and fair,” Khan said. “Traffic officers should be managing flow during peak hours, not contributing to gridlock.”

He also pointed to the potential impact on tourism and investment, particularly for visitors and returning Guyanese who may be unfamiliar with local roads.

“If we want to promote tourism and investment, we must ensure that visitors feel safe and welcomed—not confused or intimidated on the roads,” he said.

Looking ahead to 2026, Khan said the private sector would continue engaging authorities on public safety and traffic management issues, while supporting initiatives that strengthen professionalism within the security sector.

“We commend the police for the progress made, but there is room for improvement, ” he said .

“With continued collaboration, we can maintain low crime while ensuring road users are treated with respect.”

Khan concluded that balanced enforcement, c o m mu n i t y p ar t n e rship, and accountability remain crucial to sustaining public trust and supporting economic activity across Region Three and the wider country.

New Suddie training school to expand health education in Region Two – Minister Anthony

By Indrawattie Natram MINISTER of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, has a n no u n ce d tha t the new Suddie Healthcare Training School, currently under construction, will significantly expand training opportunities for residents of Region Two once completed.

The Minister made the disclosure on Tuesday during a visit to the region, where he and his team conducted an inspection of the facility.

He noted that construction is progressing well and that the institution will play a critical role in strengthening the region’s health workforce.

Dr Anthony explained that the new training school will offer a wide range of health science programmes, including pharmacy, laboratory sciences, medical imaging such as ultrasound, X-ray and CT scan technology, as well as biomedical training to support the management and maintenance of modern medical equipment.

“When the facility is completed, a full range of health science training programmes will be of-

fered right here in Region Two,” the Minister said.

“This will allow persons to upgrade their skills and receive professional training without having to travel far.”

He highlighted that many students pursuing medical and health-related studies often face financial and accommodation challenges when required to travel to other regions. The new school, he said, will ease that burden and improve access to education.

Dr Anthony also disclosed that discussions have already been held with the University of Guyana to facilitate the delivery of these programmes in Region Two once the facility becomes operational.

“We want to make these programmes available to you in the region so you don’t have to leave the region” Dr Anthony said.

Regional Chairman said it was a boost for the region and many persons look forward to the opening of the training school.

He said under the current government a lot of opportunities were created for young people through various scholarship programmes. He said that

with the Lima Regional Hospital more opportunities will be created.

The initiative forms p art o f th e go vernment’s broader effort to decentralise education and build capacity within the regional health sector.

Businessman committed to stand trial for fatal shooting of wife

Marlon Da Silva and Kenesha Vaughn TH E case surrounding the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Kenesha Vaughn is set to move to the High Court after a magistrate ruled that there is enough evidence for her reputed husband, Marlon Da Silva, to stand trial for murder.

The decision was delivered on Tuesday by Senior Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond/ Golden Grove Magistrates’ Courts, bringing the preliminary inquiry to a close.

Da Silva, 33, has been committed to face trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Criminal Assizes, where the capital offence of murder will be determined by a judge and jury.

In handing down his ruling, Magistrate Bess rejected a no-case submission made by the defence, which argued that the prosecution’s evidence fell short of the legal threshold required to send the matter to trial. Instead, the magistrate concluded that a prima facie case for murder had been established.

Throughout the inquiry, Da Silva maintained that he acted in self-defence. After the court ruled that he had a case to answer, he elected to give an unsworn statement, telling the court that he feared for his life during the incident. His attorneys urged the magistrate to consider a reduction of the charge to manslaughter, but that submission was not accepted.

The charge arises from

a deadly confrontation on February 22, 2025, at the couple’s Diamond, East Bank Demerara home.

According to reports presented to the court, an argument erupted after Vaughn asked Da Silva to return home from socialising.

The confrontation escalated, and it is alleged that Da Silva slapped Vaughn, prompting her to arm herself with a knife and approach him.

Prosecutors alleged that Da Silva then removed a licensed firearm from his waistband and fired several shots, striking Vaughn multiple times. She collapsed at the scene and was later pronounced dead at the Diamond Regional Hospital.

A post-mortem examination revealed that she sustained 12 gunshot wounds. Police have also stated that Da Silva was highly intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Following the shooting, Da Silva reportedly contacted the police and was subsequently arrested and charged. He first appeared before Magistrate Wanda Fortune in February 2025, where he was remanded to prison.

Da Silva and Vaughn share a child. He was represented by attorneys Glenn Hanoman, Sanjeev Datadin, and Everton Singh-Lammy.

The prosecution was conducted by attorneys Kiswana Jefford and Nigel Hughes on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

GPF warns against illegal sale, use of firecrackers

THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) has issued a warning to individuals and businesses against the unlawful sale, possession and use of firecrackers and other explosive devices during the New Year’s period, citing public safety concerns and the risk of serious injury.

In a statement released ahead of the festivities, the GPF noted that there is typically an increase in the sale and use of firecrackers around the New Year, a practice that has, in past years, resulted in grievous injuries to both adults and children. The Force cautioned that such devices pose significant danger not only to users but also to innocent bystanders.

“Firecrackers and similar explosives have the potential to cause serious bodily harm,” the police said, urging members of the public to exercise care and act responsibly when considering the purchase or use of these items.

The GPF warned that persons found selling or in possession of firecrackers without the required authorisation will face prosecution. Under Section 13 (1) and (2) of the Explosives Act, Chapter 16:06, the sale, purchase and possession of explosives are prohibited without the permission of the Minister. Individuals or businesses found distributing such items without a permit from the appropriate authority are liable to be charged.

As part of enforcement measures, Regional Commanders have been directed to maintain heightened law enforcement operations aimed at preventing the illegal distribution of firecrackers. These efforts include seizures where evidence of sale is detected, as well as targeted raids and searches conducted on the basis of intelligence received.

The police force has reiterated its commitment to public safety and has appealed to citizens to comply with the law to ensure a safe and peaceful New Year’s celebration for all.

Archer named in England T20 World Cup squad

JOFRA Archer has been named in England's squad for the T20 World Cup despite missing the last two Ashes Tests.

The pace bowler is continuing to recover from a side strain, and has been included in a provisional 15-man party for the tournament in India and Sri Lanka in February and March.

Jamie Smith misses out on the World Cup and the preceding tour of Sri Lanka after a difficult Ashes series, and there is no place for Jordan.

Pace bowler Josh Tongue, who has never played a whiteball international for England, is rewarded for his Ashes performances with inclusion in the World Cup squad.

After England were beaten in the first three Tests against Australia to lose the Ashes series at the earliest opportunity, the World Cup would potentially give another indication to the futures of head coach Brendon McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key.

England play three oneday internationals and three T20s in Sri Lanka in the buildup to the World Cup, which they begin against Nepal in Mumbai on 8 February.

The ODIs are important in England's bid to qualify automatically for the 50-over World Cup in 2027. The top nine in the rankings will secure a place in the tournament in southern Africa and England currently lie eighth.

Despite the tight turnaround from the Ashes, captain Harry Brook leads a fullstrength squad. England leave Australia after the fifth Test on 9 January and fly to Sri Lanka to 18 January. The first ODI is on 22 January.

Brook, Archer, Tongue, Joe Root, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley and Will Jacks have all been involved in the Ashes and are in line to play some part in England's white-ball matches in the new year.

Archer, 30, is England's premier white-ball pace bowler. After impressing in the

Ashes, he was ruled out of the series because of the side injury he sustained in the third Test in Adelaide.

England believe he is on track to recover in time for the World Cup, but he is not in the squad for the ODIs and T20s in Sri Lanka. Carse provides cover for that tour.

The 25-year-old struggled in the one-dayers in New Zealand that preceded the Ashes, then has managed only one half-century in eight innings in Australia.

In contrast, 28-year-old Tongue has been England's breakout star of the Ashes, claiming 12 wickets in his two Tests. He is in the squad for the T20s and not the ODIs. Cox, the leading run-scorer in last year's Hundred, can

feel unfortunate to miss out.

Tom Banton gets the nod as middle-order batting cover.

Duckett is in both squads despite a difficult Ashes and looks set to bring his Test opening partnership with Crawley to one-day internationals as England look for a combination that can build towards the 50-over World Cup. Crawley has played eight one-day internationals, the last of which in West Indies in December 2023 was also his last List A game.

Root, who turns 35 on Tuesday, would have been a potential candidate to rest after the Ashes, yet travels to Sri Lanka for the ODIs only. His next cricket would then likely come in the home summer.

All-rounder Jacks missed the tour of New Zealand as he recovered from a broken finger and returns to both squads as one of a number of spin options in the subcontinental conditions.

Jacks joins Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson, Rehan Ahmed and Bethell in the slow-bowling ranks.

Along with Nepal, England join West Indies, Bangladesh and tournament debutants Italy in Group C of the T20 World Cup. All of their matches take place in Kolkata and Mumbai.

Rutherford stars as Capitals thrash MI Cape Town in SA20 WEST Indies all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford starred with bat and ball as Pretoria Capitals thrashed MI Cape Town by 85 runs in the SA20.

Rutherford smashed an unbeaten 47 off 15 balls at the backend of Capitals' innings to help them post 220-5 after opting to bat first.

He put on an unbroken 86 from 27 balls with Dewald Brevis (36* off 13) with the pair hitting 10 sixes between them.

Four of them came in four balls from Rutherford in the 19th over as Capitals added 72 in the final three overs of the innings.

They were struggling

earlier in the innings at 38-3 in the powerplay but Shai Hope (45 off 30) and Wihan Lubbe (60 off 36) shared 88 for the fourth wicket to lay a platform.

Afghanistan brings back Naib, Damien Martyn hospitalised with meningitis Naveen for T20 World Cup 2026 FORMER Australia batter, Damien Martyn, is in a Queensland hospital suffering from meningitis.

Martyn, 54, was taken ill on Boxing Day with news emerging on Tuesday evening of his condition, with details confirmed to ESPNcricinfo.

Martyn is currently in an induced coma.

Former players started to take to social media on Wednesday in support. "Lots of love and prayers sending @damienmartyn way. Keep strong and fighting legend.

Love to the family xxx," Darren Lehmann posted on X, formally Twitter.

Speaking on behalf of Martyn's family, close friend Adam Gilchrist said: "He is getting the best of treatment and [Martyn's partner] Amanda and his family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes."

Martyn, known as one of the game's great strokemakers, played 67 Tests for Australia from 1992 to 2006. He was recalled in 2000 after a six-year gap and became a key figure in Steve Waugh's all-powerful side. He retired in 2006 midway through that year's Ashes series, finishing his Test career with 4406 runs at 46.37 including 13 centuries.

He was also part of the Australia side that won the

2003 ODI World Cup, hitting 88 not out in the final against India where he added 234 with Ricky Ponting, and overall scored 5346 runs at 40.80 in the format with five centuries.

After briefly working in commentary post his playing days, Martyn has largely kept a low profile. On Christmas Eve, he posted about the upcoming Boxing Day Test.

NAVEEN-UL-HAQ and Gulbadin Naib have returned to the Afghanistan side for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The 15-player squad, set to be led by Rashid Khan, was announced by the Afghanistan Cricket Board on Wednesday.

Naveen, who has recovered from his shoulder injury, last played a T20I in December 2024, and hasn't featured in an international match since then. The returning duo, along with Mohammad Ishaq, were not a part of the T20I side that toured Zimbabwe in October and November earlier this year. Ishaq, the 20-year-old wicketkeeper, then played in a one-off T20I against Qatar.

Sharafuddin Ashraf, Fareed Ahmad Malik, Bashir Ahmad and Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai - who were part of Afghanistan's squad for the Zimbabwe series - have been left out.

How South Africa conquered Test cricket in 2025

Temba Bavuma averages 53 in 12 Tests as South Africa captain

Marco Jansen is ranked second in the world all-rounder rankings, behind India’s Ravindra Jadeja. Coming into his prime years, he averages 21 with the ball and 23 with the bat. one of the best catchers in the world FROM a certain vantage point, the health of Test cricket in South Africa appears terminal.

For the first time since sporting isolation during apartheid, there will be no red-ball action in the country this summer. Instead, fans must make do watching Indian-owned T20 franchises compete in the SA20.

The next time the Proteas take the field in whites on home soil will be October 2026, 21 months after hosting Pakistan in January this year.

And yet the Test team itself has rarely looked in better shape, with 2025 proving a watershed year.

Ryan Rickelton registered his country's first double century for nine years as Pakistan were swept 2–0. In June, a sublime fourth-innings 136 from Aiden Markram, allied to a nine-wicket match haul from Kagiso Rabada, carried South Africa to a five-wicket victory over Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord's.

And with the choker's tag finally dislodged, and momentum behind them, South Africa are on track to qualify for another WTC final.

Wiaan Mulder threatened Brian Lara's record for the highest Test score when he declared himself on 367 against Zimbabwe in July. In October, Keshav Maharaj bagged a seven-for in Rawalpindi to square the series with Pakistan.

A month later, Simon Harmer claimed 17 wickets in two Tests as South Africa beat India 2-0 in their own backyard, becoming the first South African team to win away in India since 2000.

"It's been a remarkable period for us," says Sunuran Muthusamy, the spin-bowling all-rounder who scored his maiden century in the 408-run win in the second Test against India.

"We're straight into the SA20 so it's hard to really take stock. But in the small moments when we've had a chance to reflect, we know that we've found a great formula. It feels like things are really clicking."

How a 'winning machine' was built The year began with uncertainty but also hope.

In t h e a f t e rgl o w o f a nerve-jangling two-wicket win against Pakistan in the 2024 Boxing Day Test - a result that secured South Africa's place in the WTC final - there was a sense the group had reached a crossroads.

In a year when Test cricket could no longer rely on tradition or goodwill, only sustained success would keep it visible, relevant and valued.

"We needed to become a winning machine," explains the team's bullish coach, Shukri Conrad, who inherited a side in disarray after Mark Boucher resigned from the role in late 2022.

"With so few opportunities to play, and with the margin for error so small, we had to start playing to our potential.

In a year when Test cricket could no longer rely on tradition or goodwill, only sustained success would keep it visible, relevant and valued.

"We needed to become a winning machine," explains the team's bullish coach, Shukri Conrad, who inherited a side in disarray after Mark Boucher resigned from the role in late 2022.

"With so few opportunities to play, and with the margin for error so small, we had to start playing to our potential.

That has been realised most clearly in the balance of the side.

South Africa have long relied on fast bowlers of rare quality, but this attack has evolved beyond brute force.

Rabada, a generational talent, remains the spearhead and is now complemented by a depth of skill and variety that allows the Proteas to compete in all conditions.

Maharaj and Harmer offer control and a wicket-taking threat, while Marco Jansen - the two-metre-tall left-armer who can swing it both ways at pace - provides genuine X-factor.

Most striking, however, has been the transformation of the batting.

Between January 2020 and February 2023, South African batters recorded just six

Test centuries, better only than Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.

England scored 38 in the same period.

Since that lean spell, South Africans have crossed three figures on 23 occasions and are now averaging more than one hundred per Test. This year alone there have been 10 hundreds, including three firsttime centurions, one first-time double centurion, and Mulder's record-breaking knock.

Perhaps most pleasing of all has been the volume of contributions down the order.

South Africa's lower order

- from seven down - has averaged 29.51 this year, comfortably the best among Test sides. England and Ireland are the only other teams averaging above 20.

"We all share the responsibility and take pride in what we do," adds Muthusamy, whose 109 in Guwahati came from number seven and included a 97-run stand with Jansen.

"We're never beaten. That's the message the leadership group has given us."

That resilience was most evident in the WTC final. At the close of day one, South

Africa were 43-4, 169 runs behind Australia.

At lunch on day three, they were set 282 to win, the second-highest successful chase at Lord's. On both occasions, they clawed their way back in a historic victory that rewrote a long-standing narrative of teams rich in talent but brittle under pressure.

Walcott, Bertrand walk away with top honours at TTOC awards PORT OF SPAIN, Trini dad, ( CM C) – Worl d champion javelin thrower Keshorn Walcott and sprinter Leah Bertrand capped off an impressive 2025 by capturing the Sportsman of the Year and Sportswoman of the Year awards at the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee’s (TTOC) 31st awards ceremony held over the
