Borea is not just a business. It’s a lifestyle. Borea is a fully licensed adventure guiding company based in Ísafjörður in the heart of the Westfjords of Iceland. The founders of Borea have always recognized the great potential of adventure tourism surrounding their home, yet little was being done to encourage it. They wanted to let people enjoy their home environment in the same way they had done since they were young boys. Borea was created in 2006 and focuses on both short day trips for everyone and exclusive expeditions to remote corners in the Arctic. The company is operated by sailors, climbers, skiers, and sea kayakers who find their inspiration in the unique wilderness that surrounds them.

Early in the spring of 2012 we opened a coffee house. To stay on track with our philosophy, we “recycled” the old name of the house (that most locals had forgotten about) and used the name Bræðraborg, adding “Café” in the end. The name loosely translates to “Brother’s House” and stuck to the building after two brothers opened up a watchmaker’s shop and a chandlery there in 1907. Bræðraborg Café is a haven for travelers organizing their adventures in a cozy atmosphere. We serve freshly baked bread and cakes, delicious coffee with an emphasis on organic and fair trade products. During lunchtime we always serve at least two different meals, fit for vegetarians and meat lovers. We also serve nice wine and Icelandic beer during the day and in the evenings.

Welcome to Bræðraborg Café!

Most of the mountains in the Westfjords have flat tops, a sign of glacial erosion from the last Ice Age. In addition to these trademark features, the classical peak can also be found. Most of these peaked mountains are concentrated on the peninsula between the large fjords of Dýrafjörður and Arnarfjörður. This area is called the Westfjords Alps because of the resemblance to its European big brother. At 998 meters, the highest peak is Mt. Kaldbakur or Cold Back Mountain. Daring hikers can reach 1000 meters of elevation if they balance atop the cairn! On a clear day, you can see Snæfellsjökull glacier in the South. Our descent follows the same path down and the return drive to Ísafjörður is a serene end to this captivating trip.

Hiking Fjallganga 12

Via Ferrata

NEW: The only one in Iceland! Í fyrsta sinn á Íslandi! Via Ferrata is Italian for “Iron Road” and is known as a mountain route equipped with fixed cables, ladders, and bridges. The first Via Ferratas were built in the Dolomite mountain region of Italy during the First World War to aid the movement of mountain infantry. Using these man-made structures has become very popular among locals and visitors in the Alps and now we offer an opportunity to try an Icelandic version above the town of Ísafjörður! Ascending to a narrow mountain ridge that leads to the top of Mt. Eyrarfjall, we follow the edge of the mountaintop at a height of 700 meters above sea level, with a spectacular view over the surrounding fjords and bays. Support ropes and cables are set up at critical points. We also use climbing harnesses and belaying slings for safety. We end the trip by descending the gentle slopes above the ski area in Seljalandsdalur.

Bring with you: Day backpack, water bottle, sufficient clothing and hiking boots.

Riding Through Sagas

NEW: Come and experience the life of the Icelandic outlaw! Uppgötvaðu söguslóðir Gísla Súrssonar á hestbaki Trip difficulty:

Included:

This guided journey will follow the path depicted in one of the most classical Icelandic Sagas. The pristine valley of Haukadalur is where Gísli Súrsson, the infamous Icelandic outlaw resided and where this magical tour takes us. The trail to Haukadalur begins at the Sandá River and continues to the shores where the fairytale landscapes of the moss covered banks, black sands and ancient rock structures are discovered. We will take a short break to enjoy and experience the scenes from Gisli’s Saga and bask in the view of Westfjord’s highest mountain, Kaldbakur. On the return trip, we will explore the pristine valley of Meðaldalur and the golf course of Þingeyri. Continuing into Kirkjuból valley we pass the old farm of Mula and Bakki which are situated beneath the summit of Bakkahorn. This stop illustrates the vast beauty of the valley’s wide open landscapes. We return to the stables via trails that meander through the lowlands of the Sandá River. Come and experience the life of the Icelandic outlaw!
