The Origin of Thanksgiving
WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?
Well, I cannot let November expire without saying something about Thanksgiving because being thankful is a powerful force for the one who is thankful and for those around them. If we could just always remember to talk about what and who we are thankful for instead of what we do not like and about what we want instead of what we do not want, oh how happy we would be!
One definition of thanksgiving is, “the expression of gratitude, especially to God.” Most of you know that the holiday season of Thanksgiving had its origin with the Pilgrims in 1621. For many of us, the meaning of Thanksgiving usually includes feasting, four-day weekends, football games, floats, family reunions, or a forerunner to Christmas festivities.
The “first Thanksgiving,” however, was neither a feast nor a holiday, but a simple gathering. Having lost forty-six of the 102 original colonists to the bitter winter of 1620, the survivors yielded a bountiful harvest in 1621 and had a three-day celebration to give thanks. The next celebration was not until June of 1676.
While researching the true meaning of the holiday we call Thanksgiving, I realized that our Nation has lost and forgotten the true meaning. It is proper that we are thankful for the people, careers, health, prosperity, success as well as the insignificant things we enjoy, but we need to remember that the holiday is rooted in the founding of our country and the adversities they endured to create the great nation we live in.
George Washington proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1789 and congress finally sanctioned the holiday in 1941, at the speed of
Government. Here is a verbatim copy of his proclamation.
By the President of the United States of America: a Proclamation.
Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor--and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me `to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be -- That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks -- for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation--for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed--for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted -- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed;
By Robert Orso publisher’s note
and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions--to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually -- to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness onto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord -- To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us -- and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand at the City of NewYork the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.
George Washington
Amid all the things we are thankful for, I submit that the number one thing should be God and County. As I mentioned at the beginning, let us talk (and pray) about what we want for our Nation.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Bryan David
ARMY GREEN
Having served in the US Army as a Green Beret, Bryan David worked alongside some of the highest-caliber talent on the planet.
After 12 years of serving on an Army Special Forces A-Team, Bryan retired in December 2007 as Special Forces Chief Warrant Officer Three.
“We spent countless hours training, and it’s one of the things I miss the most,” Bryan declares. His training didn’t stop there, though. It carried over into a blooming career in real estate.
Bryan’s military service helped shape his business by equipping him with the work ethic, tenacity, and attention to detail needed to start his own brokerage.
PLANTING SEEDS
Bryan, who was born and raised in Biloxi, obtained his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from William Carey University.
“I have been married to my beautiful and loving wife for 34 years” he boasts. “She is an amazing cook, so staying fit is a challenge”, he said jokingly. The couple has three pets: a flat-coated retriever named Trigger and two cats named Nacho and Dorito.
Bryan has served on the West Jackson County Utility District (WJCUD) Board of Commissioners for the past several years. He also served for two years as a director for the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Association of Realtors.
The seeds of real estate were planted in Bryan’s life from an early age. “My father is the hardest working person I have ever known. I was blessed to work with him in the construction industry as a child and young man,” shared Bryan.
This long-term love of building things and woodworking developed a new interest of Bryan’s. During his time in the Army, he and his wife got into the business of investing in and rehabbing homes–about one or two per year. Bryan went on to say, “After retiring, I continued to invest in real estate, and it was just a natural fit to jump in full-time”.
GROWING AGENTS
Bryan began his real estate career in 2013. Then in 2018, he started Expect Realty on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with his business partner, Alicia Whitaker.
When asked “How do you define success”, Bryan answered, “For me, success is helping an agent grow from zero production to becoming a top producer, shifting their mindset from scarcity to abundance, and achieving financial security”. He added, “Watching an agent transition from renter to homeowner is incredibly fulfilling. That’s what success looks like to me”.
Now, as Broker/Owner of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Expect Realty, Bryan has the opportunity to walk along this path of success with 25 real estate agents.
It is no surprise that when asked, “What do you find most fulfilling about your work”, Bryan replied simply with these two words, “Growing agents”.

I find that working with my hands and doing hard things eases the mind. I like to remind myself of where I came from with a little sweat.
GARDEN GREEN
Bryan’s devotion to helping his agents achieve success is evident in his daily practices. So when an opportunity arose to take his brokerage to the next level, he seized it.
To bring in more opportunities for his realtors, he decided that Expect Realty should partner with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate. About this partnership, Bryan said the following, “Our partnership with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate is very unique and no other company has such an iconic brand relationship that transcends real estate. This well-known publication has been around for over 100 years and is carried in as a household brand in major retailers like Wal-Mart”.
This is a pairing that sets BHGRE Expect Realty apart from other companies. Bryan added, “Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate was a natural fit for the way we do business and serve people”. Expect Realty’s efforts in serving people are beyond evident in their more than 550 5-star Google reviews.
“The marketing power of the Better Homes and Gardens brand is unsurpassed when it comes to reaching homeowners. Our agents get access to new tools and can now reach luxury buyers globally through the Distinctive Collection (which focuses on high-end properties)”, Bryan shared excitedly.
The signature color of Better Homes and Gardens
Real Estate just happens to be “army green”, further solidifying this destined pairing.
ESTABLISHING ROOTS
Aside from his impact in the real estate realm, Bryan has been establishing roots in many other areas. He contributes to many organizations, such as the Green Beret Foundation and the Special
Forces Charitable Trust. To this, Bryan adds, “We help with local organizations like Comeback Coolers and Toys for Tots. We’re always looking for events to support”.
Additionally, he is a member of the local VFW and has supported them in the past. Bryan is also part of the Mississippi Heroes Million Dollar Club, who often build wheelchair ramps for those in need. He has even supported Paddle for Paws for the past two years, a fundraiser for Friends of Jackson County Animal Shelter Pets.
CULTIVATING FUTURE SUCCESS
“We have doubled our agent count since this time last year, from 12 to 25”, Bryan shared.
For Bryan, his successes do not stop with just his career. He carries his hard-working mentality into everything he does, including his hobbies and future goals.
“I like to work out, fish, shoot, and build or work on things. I find that working with my hands and doing hard things eases the mind. I like to remind myself of where I came from with a little sweat”, he shares.
Bryan shared that his personal goals include doing some additional traveling with his wife (especially in their RV). So far, they have already traveled to Antigua, Key West, Thailand, Europe, and the Caribbean.
As for his professional goals, Bryan stated, “I have always had a goal and a dream to expand the brokerage beyond myself. To create a real business that doesn’t rely on any one individual and has the means to help the communities it serves”.
In the spirit of expanding his brokerage, Bryan offers the following advice to any up-and-coming top producers – database building is the number one thing an agent can do every day. “An agent will be successful if they build and nurture it”, he stated.
“Also, saying the right things to the right people at the right times is so important”, which he says translates into training, maintaining your database, and prospecting.
Lastly, he suggests, “Treat your real estate career as a business and job. Get up every morning, get dressed for work, and work the full day. There is always some work to be done for your business.”

SHARED VISION FOR SUCCESS
In their beloved Ocean Springs, two powerhouse women have joined forces to create a real estate team that’s gaining serious momentum along the Gulf Coast.
ROXY CONDREY
ROXY CONDREY
By Jessica Wellar Photos By Anna K. Stokes, AK Stokes Photography
Roxy Condrey, co-owner of the boutique brokerage Rain Residential, and Kristin Smith, her team lead and listing specialist, have built an award-winning partnership rooted in shared vision and mutual respect.
“We’ve always been successful by sharing the same vision for what Rain can accomplish,” Roxy begins. “We grow every year, and Kristin has been an integral part of our business growing.”
DIFFERENT PATHS CONVERGE
Born in northern Louisiana, Roxy studied marketing and psychology at Louisiana State University. Shortly after graduation, her husband, Ted, received a job offer in Florida, so Roxy ventured into real estate on the Emerald Coast in 2004 and never looked back. In 2009, the Condreys opened Rain Residential, a boutique real estate company known for its top-producing sales agents and award-winning hotels.
KRISTIN SMITH KRISTIN SMITH
Kristin, originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, earned her bachelor’s in communications from Eastern Michigan University. She moved to Ocean Springs in 2010 and went to work for the Ocean Springs Tourism Bureau.
“Roxy was a board member at the Bureau, and that’s how we met,” Kristin recalls with a smile. “That’s also where I discovered Roxy’s passion for Ocean Springs and the beauty of the Gulf Coast.”
Kristin began working in hospitality with Rain in 2014, initially managing The Roost Boutique Hotel and The Inn at Ocean Springs.
“It was really nice that I had the time to get that ‘fly on the wall’ view,” Kristin adds. “I saw the vision for Rain from working on the hotel arm of the company first; and Roxy and I worked so well together, it was an
easy transition into the real estate side of the business.”
DREAM TEAM
Kristin officially joined Rain Residential in 2017, and together, she and Roxy formed the Condrey Smith Group. With over $100 million worth of real estate on the Mississippi Gulf Coast sold, they have certainly solidified their reputation as specialists in the Ocean Springs market.
Their group is unique, consisting of Roxy, Kristin, and their full-time marketing department.
“We have a photographer and artist, graphics and design, as well as wonderful admin support,” Roxy acknowledges “But at Rain Residential, we look at our entire company as a team. We have eight other agents, and we work really closely with one another to help each other succeed.”
Last year, their brokerage achieved over $50 million in sales and closed 45% of all condos sold in Ocean Springs, with Condrey Smith Group selling over $20 million.
There’s little doubt the team’s remarkable success is due at least in part, to Roxy’s expertise in selling communities.
“When I arrived, I noticed there was a void for that niche here,” Roxy explains. “My background was working for a developer in Florida, so it definitely gives us a unique advantage and perspective.”
With over 20 years of experience in the industry, Roxy has earned the Top Producer Award for consecutive years from both the Gulf Coast Association of Realtors and the Biloxi Ocean Springs Association of Realtors. Likewise, Kristin quickly made a name for herself in the local real estate scene, receiving a Top Producer Award as well. Since she started, in fact, Kristin has managed to earn a Top Producer title every year — which speaks volumes of her exceptional consistency.
“I believe success is multifaceted and deeply rooted in a sense of responsibility — to our clients, colleagues, and the community,” Roxy reflects.
“Achieving this vision while staying true to our core values is the most important thing to us.”
SO THAT IT’S A WINWIN FOR ALL PARTIES IS INCREDIBLY FULFILLING.
AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH
What truly sets the Condrey Smith Group apart is their emphasis on creative and strategic marketing.
The team focuses on understanding the unique selling proposition of each property listed, while boasting an exceptional in-house marketing department that has the ability to develop customized marketing strategies and implement innovative techniques that maximize the value of clients’ investment and development properties.
““We don’t just market properties — we create compelling narratives that connect with potential buyers,”
“For me, coming up with innovative or creative solutions so that it’s a win-win for all parties is incredibly fulfilling,” Kristin adds.
BEYOND THE BROKERAGE
Outside of work, both women cherish time with their families. Kristin and her husband, Trevor, have two boys, Simon (11) and Samson (8).
The Smith family also has two very sweet cats and a very large African Spurred Tortoise adopted from a previous client.
“Five years later, we still feel like we have a petting zoo in our backyard — in the most fun way possible,” Kristin laughs.
Off the clock, Kristin and her hubby can usually be found outside, and are especially fond of beach time and camping.
“Since so much of our days are spent on computers and screens, it’s nice to take some time to disconnect and just focus on being with family and friends,” she says.
Roxy and Ted also have two children, Ruby (11) and Gentry (9), who play well with Kristin’s children since they’re all close in age. Additionally, the Condreys’ household includes two Siamese cats that Roxy notes “adopted us,” an African water frog, and quite a few chickens at the Rain

space where everyone can come and have fun; there is something for everyone to enjoy,” Kristin emphasizes. “The kids can play with the chickens while parents visit the bookstore. It’s been neat to see the transformation of the land.”
Roxy shakes her head in agreement.
“My goal is that, as part of The Collective, Rain may be more than a real estate office — as a dynamic space where we can continue to
deliver exceptional experiences for our clients and guests,” she concludes. “I believe this collaborative atmosphere will inspire all.
“We strive to make a difference, not just in the market, but in the lives of those we serve. Running a business is more than just achieving financial success; it’s about building a brand that stands for quality, thoughtful design, and positive impact.”
A GOLDEN PATH, GUIDED BY GOD
By Rebecca Wilson | Photos By Anna K. Stokes, AK Stokes Photography
Sherry Moxley began her pro fessional path at Augusta State and Dekalb Technical College, where she studied Marketing.
In her hometown of Augusta, GA, hospitality was a way of life. Now she experiences that same hospitality on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which she now calls home.
Today, the word “home” has taken on an entirely new meaning for Sherry, through her career in real estate. “The most fulfilling part of my work is helping clients find the place they can truly call home”, she explains.
The same hospitality instilled in her early on has now come full circle, as Sherry helps her clients find their own path home.
The Path to Entrepreneurship Blessed with an abundance of entrepreneurial spirit, Sherry has always been an ambitious and motivated professional.
She once led over 500 women in a multi-level marketing company. During this time, she earned 12 free cars and received a revenue of $500,000 a year. Eventually, she felt led to invest her efforts elsewhere.
Today, she is an owner of CWR Digital Gulf Coast, is one of four owners of GCW Media/Gulf Coast Woman Magazine, and has over 35 years of media experience.
The Path to Real Estate Sherry’s journey to becoming a real estate agent was shaped by several life events.
“I’ve always been passionate about helping people. After experiencing significant changes in my personal life, I wanted to shift into a career that would allow me to combine my love for community with my skills in networking and hospitality”, she shared. “After my marriage ended, I knew I needed to rebuild and find a way to channel my energy into something positive and fulfilling.”
Real estate offered Sherry the perfect opportunity, as it allowed her to be there for people during one of the most important times in their lives–whether buying their first home, finding their forever home, or making an investment.
So in 2022, Sherry set her sights on taking the real estate exam. After passing on her first attempt, she obtained her real estate license and joined the HL Raymond Properties team. Now, about two years into her real estate career, Sherry is Lead/Realtor and currently supervises eight agents.
This career transition was also fueled by Sherry’s desire to create a life that aligned with her values. “Working hard but also having the flexibility in time
to spend with my children and grandchildren or participating in church activities and community work”, she highlighted.
The Path to Community For Sherry, real estate is not just about helping people find a home, it is about building relationships and creating a sense of community. She offers her clients a unique blend of Southern hospitality, entrepreneurial spirit, and an empathetic approach to her work.
“It’s important for me to go beyond just being a transactional real estate agent. I want to be a trusted advisor who helps clients make informed decisions that align with their life goals”, revealed Sherry. “I don’t just sell properties, I create a personalized experience tailored to each client’s needs.”
Real estate is “personal”, as Sherry sees it, and she enjoys being part of such a significant part of people’s lives. To this, she says, “It’s about making sure people feel comfortable and supported–whether they’re single, part of a couple, or in a growing family”.
It is all about the connections she forms with her clients, the impact she can make in their lives, and ensuring their entire real estate journey is both seamless and enjoyable.
“Guiding them through what can often be a stressful process and making it as smooth as possible gives me a great sense of accomplishment”, she shared humbly. “Knowing I’ve played a role in helping families or individuals find a property that suits their needs and dreams is incredibly rewarding, but more importantly, I love the relationships I build.”
The Path to God Sherry gives 100 percent in all of her endeavors, not only in her career. Aside from her cherished real estate career, she also adores her family and her relationship with God.
She is actively involved with her church, Northwood Church Ocean Springs. As leader of the New @ NC/Next Steps Ministry, Sherry focuses on helping new members of the church (as well as those who are new in their faith) get connected and grow in their spiritual journey. “It’s a fulfilling way to serve and be part of others’ growth, both in their faith and within the church community”, she identified.
Sherry’s love for God also reflects on the love she has for her family. Affectionately called “Glammie” by her grandchildren, she prioritizes spending time with her family every chance she gets.
“Balancing my career with my commitment to my family, faith, and community is very important to me”, Sherry concluded. The Path to Success
Last year was a successful one for Sherry in her real estate career, with 14 total transactions, totaling around $4.1 million. 2024 is already shaping up to be just as successful, with a projected volume of 30 transactions totaling around $6.2 million.
When asked the question, “How do you define success”, Sherry responded, “Making a meaningful impact in people’s lives while staying true to my values. It’s not just about hitting sales goals or accolades (though those are nice), but it’s about building long-lasting relationships and helping clients feel confident and supported throughout their real estate journey”.
She also reiterated the importance of balancing her career with personal fulfillment, like spending quality time with her family and contributing to her church and community.
The Path Ahead
Leading with heart and empowering others to succeed… That is how Sherry will always tackle life.
The path ahead for Sherry includes plenty of selfcare time with her best
girlfriends, as she claims, “Those moments are so refreshing”. It also includes traveling, spend ing time outdoors, and always seeking opportu nities to pour into others (personally, professionally, and spiritually).
“It’s all about creating meaningful connections and experiences, whether with loved ones or with people I meet along the way”, she proclaimed.
Sherry believes there will be many exciting opportu nities ahead.
As for her short-term goals, she is focused on earning her broker’s license and stepping into a new role as the “man aging broker” of the HL Raymond Properties Gulfport and Bay St. Louis offices. “This will allow me to support our agents and help guide them in their careers. I’m eager to grow in this leadership role and contribute to the success of HL Raymond Properties”, she said excitedly.
In the long term, Sherry hopes to work closely with Holly (HL Raymond Properties Owner) to elevate the company to new heights. She stated, “I want to create a culture where agents feel empowered to be their best, provide topnotch service, and thrive in their careers”.
For all you up-and-coming realtors, Sherry offered the following advice, “Consistency is key –focus on delivering value, being authentic, and providing an exceptional client experience. Stay humble.

STERLING
CHOICE HOME WARRANTY
Clients look to REALTORS® to help guide them through one of the most important decisions of their life. They trust recommendations and hold Realtors’ opinions in the highest regard, as Bradford Sterling, of Choice Home Warranty, readily points out.
Bradford recognizes the immeasurable value that real estate agents provide to their clients. That’s why Realtors can trust that their clients will receive top-notch coverage with a Choice Home Warranty service contract.
“Knowing the benefits of a home warranty will help Realtors to protect their clients and add value to their home purchase or listing,” Bradford explains.
“According to the National Home Warranty Association, homes on the market with a home warranty included tend to sell faster and for more money than homes without one. That’s huge.”
Defining Protection Nationwide
As a senior account executive at Choice Home Warranty, Bradford has six years of industry experience under his belt and has become a trusted guide in navigating the intricate balance between home warranties and the expectations of both buyers and sellers. He points out a common misconception often muddles the distinction between home warranties and insurance.
PROTECTING THE AMERICAN DREAM
“While home insurance guards against secondary damage and acts of God, a home warranty steps into the mechanical intricacies, covering the systems and appliances themselves that fail due to normal wear and tear,” Bradford clarifies.
Choice Home Warranty extends its influence nationwide. Operating in all 50 states, the company boasts a unique trait — it’s privately owned. This independence injects agility into its daily operations, allowing the company to respond to the needs of homeowners swiftly.
Depth of Experience
Growing up in a family deeply involved in real estate, with a broker/owner/builder father and mother, Bradford’s early exposure laid the foundation for his eventual home warranty career. Despite initially pursuing a degree in English and history, Bradford’s path took an unexpected turn when his father invited him to partner in a home inspection business with him in the late ‘90s. Purchasing an AmeriSpec franchise together in 1997, Bradford delved into the intricacies of homes with his father,
overseeing over 10,000 inspections personally and training 10 inspectors. He says this extensive knowledge in the field became a natural bridge to the home warranty sector.
“My home inspection knowledge goes a long way; I know the lingo and am deeply familiar with the failures of all systems in a home,” Bradford shares.
His ability to navigate potential misunderstandings between technicians and homeowners turns could-be conflicts into resolutions, earning him the reputation of a reliable expert.
Strong Foundations
There’s little doubt the real estate market has witnessed a shift as interest rates and inventory continue to rise. Homes are no longer flying off the shelves in a seller’s market, as the balance tilts toward buyers.
According to Bradford, over the past few years, many Realtors did not include a home warranty in their transactions due to extreme market conditions.
WHILE
I’M HAPPY OUR BUSINESS GREW, WE DON’T WANT TO SEE OUR REALTOR FRIENDS AND PARTNERS CUT OUT OF ANYTHING REAL ESTATERELATE.
THAT’S REALLY WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT, TO MAKE IT SMOOTH FOR THE CLIENT AND THE REALTOR.
A surprising thing happened, however, as the warranty industry’s direct-to-consumer divisions still grew significantly. The buyers who didn’t obtain a warranty with their Realtors went out on their own to secure coverage — in effect, cutting the Realtors out of that part of the transaction.
“While I’m happy our business grew, we don’t want to see our Realtor friends and partners cut out of anything real estate-related,” Bradford emphasizes.
“I know they work too hard to get a customer or client, and we want them included and become our life-long partners.
“Realtors should discuss home warranties with every buyer and seller and be sure they have a warranty partner they know by name that can assist their clients when the need arises,” he adds.
Bradford is also quick to point out that the guiding principle at Choice Home Warranty is not merely about the bottom line.
“What sets us apart in this business is doing what’s right by the homeowner,” Bradford asserts. “It’s a commitment to homeowners and, by extension, to the real estate agents who form the primary source of our referrals.”
Outside the Office
Beyond his professional pursuits, Bradford looks forward to spending time with his wife, Amy, and two children, Evelyn (10) and Penelope (6).
The family loves hiking, beach trips, and soccer matches, and Amy and Bradford also love live music and are avid concert-goers.
“Our family splits our time between the mountains and the beach,” Bradford smiles. “We are also a sports family since both of my children play soccer. And I’m a craft beer enthusiast myself, a ‘hobby’ that was fostered in a brew pub where I worked while I was in college. Chandeleur Island Brewing is one of my favorite local breweries.”
Always Educating
Regardless of the market cycle, for Bradford, the heart of his work lies in the joy of educating homeowners and Realtors. He relishes his role as a real estate team player, and that will never change.
“I like to refer to myself as part of a real estate team; I love to consider myself that way because agents know they can pick up the phone and call me to step in and make that process that much more smooth for them,” Bradford affirms. “That’s really what it’s all about, to make it smooth for the client and the Realtor.”
“And the more information the Realtor has about what a home warranty is and how it operates, that is paramount to customer satisfaction.”
To learn more about how home warranties can protect you and your clients, give Bradford a call today at 901-870-2334, or visit Choice Home Warranty’s website: www.CHWpro.com
