Back to School Extravaganzas: It’s always a little bittersweet as these events mark the end of summer but what a fun way to conclude the season. It is such a joy to see the smiles on faces when students receive a backpack filled with school supplies! Miigwetch to the staff who always make the extravaganzas lots of fun for the students and families.

August was a busy month! Miigwetch to EVERYONE that helped make the following events a success!

• GTB Annual Health Fair: The GTB Annual Health Fair was held at Strongheart from 11am-3pm. It was a good day filled with lots of helpful information from various GTB departments and community organizations.

• Peshawbestown Pow Wow: What a great time at the pow wow this year. We enjoyed our time listening to the drum, watching the dancers, and visiting with friends. Miigwetch to everyone that helped make it a memorable time.

• Anishiinaabemowin Family Camp: I hope you were able to spend some time at the camp this year – what a fantastic opportunity this is to learn the language.

• Higher Education Banquet: Saturday, August 24 at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa outdoor tent honoring GTB higher education graduates.

Welcome! Before you complete your application for a home here, please review our resident selection criteria.

The term "applicant(s)" under these criteria mean the person(s) that are over the age of 18 and will be occupying the apartment home. The term "occupant(s)" in these criteria means the person(s) that are under the age of 18 that will be occupying the apartment home.

These rents do not include utilities. Those would be the responsibility of the tenant.

No application or holding fees. Occupancy Guidelines Lease signers must be at least 18 years of age.

Our properties allow up to the following number of occupants per unit. One bedroom units - three persons; Two bedroom units -five persons; Three bedroom units -seven persons.

Any person over the age of 18, must qualify as a new resident and be placed on the lease. The addition of a Resident to the residential lease agreement that results in exceeding the Occupancy Guidelines will not be allowed.

Identification A copy of both the state issued ID(s) and social security card will be required upon application for residency.

Application for Residency An Application for Residency must be completed and maintained for each person over the age of 18.

Qualifying Standards • Rental History: Up to 36 months of rental history may be verified on present and previous residences. A positive record of prompt monthly payment, sufficient notice, with no damages is expected. For applicants who are homeowners, permission must be granted to verify payment history with bank or lending institution.

If there is an eviction or balance due to any apartment community or private owner reflective on the credit report, it must be at least 3 years old, and positive rental history must be established in the interim.

• Credit History: An unsatisfactory credit report can disqualify an applicant from renting an apartment home.

An unsatisfactory report is one which reflects past or current bad debts, late payments or unpaid bills, liens, judgments, foreclosures or bankruptcies. If the applicant is rejected for poor credit history the applicant may contact the reporting agency that provided the credit report. An applicant rejected for the unsatisfactory credit is encouraged to obtain a copy of the credit report from the agency and correct any erroneous information that may be on the report.

New GTB Administration Building Survey Ahnee GTB Tribal Members & GTB Employees: Through grants and long-term guaranteed loan financing, the Grand Traverse Band Government is evaluating & assessing developing a plan for a NEW Administration Building. There have been comprehensive studies completed on the oldest to newest buildings in Peshawbestown that have served us well but many are costing the Tribe a lot of money. One of the main issues is that we have 17 buildings that require cleaning, maintenance, seasonal work, and capital expenditures. Currently our costs per square foot to manage all of this plus our outlying county buildings is very high, the annual budget for space costs for several years ranges from $2.2 to $2.7 million.

We would appreciate hearing from GTB Tribal membership and employees through a survey of what you would envision for a NEW GTB Administration Building. Leadership and managers have been discussing this for several years and themselves envision how much more efficient a one-stop shop building/facility would be for providing services to the GTB Membership. A few of the major questions that have come up are: where the NEW Administration building would be located, exactly what services would be housed there, and how do we ensure it fits into our future growth and development.

CAMPERS AND PARK VISITORS Attention: Campers/Park Visitors Hunting/Fishing/Gathering/Trapping Regulations Section 12 12.01 Campgrounds. Tribal members shall follow MDNR general camping registration procedures, including payment of camping fees, and all other applicable rules and regulations when camping at a developed campsite within a State Park or State Forest campground.

12.02 Dispersed Camping State Land. Dispersed camping is permitted on State Forest Land at least ½ mile from a State Forest Campground or boundary of a State Park.

Permits are available at no cost from the Natural Resources Department or local MDNR Field Office.

12.03 Fees to State Parks and Certain Launch Fees. Tribal member(s) engaged in the exercise of a Tribal treaty-related Hunting. Trapping, Fishing or Gathering activities may have any entrance, use or launch fees associated with the Tribal member’s use of such facilities waived when: A) The Tribal member is in possession of a Tribally issued enrollment card; and B) The member is in possession of a valid Tribally issued vehicle access card and has it properly displayed in the window on the passenger side of the vehicle.

C) Comply with all rules and regulations applicable at the launch site.

12.03 Enforcement of Campground Rules. State of Michigan State park rangers are authorized to enforce State park regulations within State parks on Tribal members while at the campground.

12.04 National Forest Campground Fee Exemption. Fees for camping at National Forest Campground may be waived for Tribal members engaged in activities related to the exercise of Treaty Rights (Contact Natural Resources Department for details and materials).

12.05 Dispersed Camping USFS Land. Dispersed camping is permitted on State Forest Land at least ½ mile from a US Forest Service Campground.

The Elders Emergency Service program is to assist elder’s and is not limited to any situation.

Examples: Food, Heating, cooling, snow removal @ $25/per trip and lawn care up to $25 per cut, appliance purchase, clothing, even reimbursement for payments that you incurred This program can be used in conjunction with LIHEAP and/or HUMAN SERVICES. Each Elder is required to complete an application. In order for the application to be processed in a timely manner, it is important that the directions for this program be followed and completed properly.

Procedures for program are as follows: • Application must be filled out completely, signed and dated by the applicant.

• Supporting documentation must be submitted with application • Assistance request must be for primary residence.

• Utility vendors that give a lock in rate must be documented by the vendor • Reimbursement- Is allowed -show proof of payment. o Can’t reimburse when paid by another GTB program or Agency • No income guidelines and is open to all elders living in the service area This is an exciting service made available again for you and we are pleased to service you. Wa a b a bagaa G i i z i s / ( CH A N G I N G L EAVES M OON) GRAND TRAVERSE BAND OF OTTAWA AND CHIPPEWA INDIANS TITLE VI PART C CAREGIVER SUPPORT PROGRAM PROCEDURES Purpose: It will be the purpose of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Title VI Part C Caregiver Support Program to offer support services to all eligible Native American Caregivers, Grandparents or older relative residing in the service area as well as respite care when program funds are available.

The Caregiver Support Program provides a comprehensive referral and service system for caregivers. This is for families/ individuals who are caregivers to elders who are chronically ill or who has a life altering physical, mental or developmental disability, and for grandparents or older individuals who is the primary caregiver for a child or a relative of a child by blood, marriage, or adoption, or raising the child informally and who is 55 years of age or older and lives with the child. Services available include information about services, caregiver training, support groups, counseling, assistance to caregivers in gaining services, and respite services to compliment care provided by caregivers. This is not an exclusive list.

PROCEDURES: Eligibility 1. Priority; Caregivers who are older individual with the greatest social and economic need, Older individuals with the greatest economic need particularly of low-income individuals, Grandparent/Older individuals providing care to individuals with severe disabilities, including raising children/children with disabilities, and to Family caregivers who provide care to older individuals with the greatest social and economic needs.

2. Care Recipient (i.e., the person whom the caregiver is providing care) 55 years or older must reside within the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Service area and be a federally recognized tribal member.

3. Care Recipient under 18 must reside with the grandparent/ older individual in the Grand Traverse Band of Indians Tribal Services area.

4. Caregiver (i.e., the person providing care to the care recipient) must be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe and reside within the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Service Area. Also meet one of the following: • Caregivers are Native Americans who are 55 years and older, who provide care and support services to the care recipient that are 55 years and older who, for reason of illness or frailty; • Caregivers are Native Americans who are under 54 years and age, who provide care and support services to the care recipient who is 55 years and older, for reason of illness or frailty or to an individual with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder with neurological and organic brain dysfunction; or • Grandparents/Older individual (55) years or older, who are primary caregivers for and/or child or a relative of a child by blood, marriage, or adoption, or raising a child informally under 18 years of age and whom cannot function independently.

5. The Care Recipient 55 years or older must need assistance with at least two of the criteria of Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) that includes eating, dressing, bathing, transferring, toileting, walking, shopping, doing laundry, managing money, taking medication, and require supervision due to Alzheimer’s or other Dementia.

6. The Care Recipient 55 years or older with two of the Activities of Daily Living cannot be a caregiver when being cared by a caregiver through the GTB Caregiver program.

This is due to prevent and eliminate stress upon the care

recipient and to prevent fraudulent activity.

7. Respite Care provides the caregiver with “time off” from their care giving duties where the caregiver chooses his/her own respite worker. Respite care range from a few hours a day to a week or more. The respite place and the length of time depends on the needs of the family and the available resources. Respite Service Agreement and Responsibilities and a conduct of a complete background will be required before services are rendered.

8. The Respite Provider must be age 18 or older.

9. Respite Providers/Caregivers are not considered employees of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians but are temporary program participants receiving services.

10. Family members or other who show proof that Caregivers/ Respite Providers are not taking proper care of the Care receiver will be immediately terminated.

11. Elder Site Coordinator are ineligible to receive respite support for elders during working hours.

The Tribal Caregiver Support Program provides: 1. Respite Assistance 2. Opportunity for the Caregiver to access assistance services.

3. Caregiver Training 4. Caregiver and/or Grandparents/older individuals Support and Support Groups 5. Resource assistance information will be collected and provided to the Tribal Caregiver clients who are in the Tribal Programs service area.

6. Contracting for services from local health care agencies for: Caregiver training, forming caregiver support groups, and basic caregiver coping skills.

7. Background checks on Respite Providers; Caregivers/ Respite providers are responsible for submitting documents to conduct a background check.

The Tribal Caregiver Support Program does not provide: 1. Mediation for family conflicts. Tribal Caregiver Support Program is to remain impartial.

Elders Open Forum

Tuesday, August 13th, 2019 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Traverse City Satellite Office Tribal Council members in attendance: Chairman McClellan, Vice Chair Vargo, and Secretary Frankenberger. Treasurer Rohl was attending the Title VI National Conference. Councilor Napont was on travel to Beaver Island.

Discussion began at 10:20 a.m. with Chairman McClellan announcing the GTB Pow Wow this weekend and the Health Fair on Friday. GTB Elder Elizabeth Gibbs was the first to speak. She discussed her ongoing Due Process that was started on December 6, 2018. Elizabeth went over the details of this issue and also discussed another Due Process that she feels was handled incorrectly. Elizabeth discussed issues with her home which she stated was sold to her illegally; she also stated she has proof of the realtor abusing trust fund money. She would like to be put on a Tribal Council agenda for Closed Session to come and speak to Council further regarding her two Due Processes, one of which has not been resolved. Her sister also spoke on her behalf. Chairman McClellan stated they will try to get to the bottom of this.

GTB Elder Pat Putney spoke next. She discussed the Benzie Pow wow. Three people who have been on the committee in the past will not be serving this year, and Pat stated they will need help putting on the Pow wow. Pat stated a budget of $3,000 has been allocated for the Benzie Pow Wow. They would also like to order t-shirts. The amount needed for the pow wow budget was discussed. Chairman McClellan stated the Cultural Department has been busy recently with Language Camp and the Pow Wow; he stated they will try to find out more.

GTB Elder Sandra Waukazoo spoke next. She asked a follow up question to something she brought up several months ago regarding the street lights on Stallman road. Sandra stated there are more lights out now and asked if an answer has been found.

Doris Winslow stated that Ron Anderson needs to be notified specifically as to which lights are out. Doris stated she would let Ron know about the lights and added that some of the light bulbs need to be special ordered.

The 2% allocation process was discussed. Secretary Frankenberger stated that GTB is one of the last tribes to decide where our 2% money goes. Other tribes do not have a say over their 2% allocation; the money is sent to Lansing and then decided on and allocated from there. The money often does not stay local to benefit local businesses or organizations. The difference between tribes in 2% allocations has to do with the way each individual tribe’s Gaming Compact has been negotiated. Vice Chair Vargo stated that GTB is very fortunate to keep 2% local.

Doris Winslow spoke at this time to give updates from Tribal Manager Sonya Zotigh on some issues that were brought up at recent Elders open forum meetings. The handicap buttons are being ordered and should be here soon. Once they are received, a company called Record will be out to install the handicap buttons.

It was stated that there is no install date yet. Pest control has also been around to various GTB sites to spray for ants. The railings are being updated so they will no longer cause splinters. The timeline for that to be completed is August 14, 2019. Doris stated a new lock has been ordered for the alarm panel. The heater that was in the storage closet has been removed. Doris stated that Sonya is aware of the issues with the Elders Complex and is working with Housing Department staff to fix those issues.

Leonard spoke again to ask whether the Herkner road apartments were supposed to be open the first of August.

Secretary Frankenberger replied she believes it will be in September, and stated she does not have an exact date. Several Elders had asked for a link to be put in the GTB newsletter with the income guidelines for the Herkner Rd. apartments. Doris replied that a link can be added.

Elizabeth Gibbs spoke again to ask whether the issues with grass being overgrown that was brought up last month at Elders Open Forum have been addressed. The grass has been taken care of.

Chairman McClellan mentioned this would benefit GTB members living in Benzie County specifically.

The potential building of additional GTB offices as part of this construction project, including a potential child care facility, was discussed. Chairman McClellan mentioned that GTB members living ELIGIBILITY: ALL GTB & FEDERALLY in Charlevoix also experience longer wait times when calling for RECOGNIZED TRIBAL MEMBERS - AGES 16 emergency services and stated that we are in the stages of talking AND UP and negotiating regarding this.

GTB Elder Gloria Ptak spoke next regarding the interactive Smart Boards that have been installed in GTB offices. Secretary Frankenberger asked if these would be up and running soon.

James Sullivan, Communications employee stated that there was a recent power surge that damaged the TV in the Tribal Council Chambers in the Administration building in Peshawbestown.

They are waiting on a requisition to replace it. James stated test runs of this system at the Benzie office have been successful.

Elizabeth Gibbs asked how long ago this happened; James replied it happened approximately a month and a half ago and that he and 18400 Maple Street Lake Ann, MI 49650 Jared are working on it.

Elizabeth spoke again to state that more native artwork is needed at the Grand Traverse Resort. This has been brought up many times by various Elders and other GTB Members. Secretary Frankenberger stated this has been discussed since she has been on Tribal Council. Chairman McClellan stated we need more GTB members employed at the Resort. The discounted room rate available to GTB members was discussed. Doris Winslow stated that at community events such as Cherry Fest and Film Fest, where the Resort gives a donation, it is announced as GTRS giving the donation and not GTB. Secretary Frankenberger stated we can work on this issue through better marketing. The management of the Resort was discussed.

The GTB Back to School Extravaganza’s were held at each satellite office the first week of August. Tribal Police and Fire were there for community outreach. Each site had “bounce houses” for the kids, giving them some end of the summer enjoyment.

Backpacks and school materials were available for Tribal families

living in tribal housing in the six-county service area. A barbeque was also held at each site for attendees. These events are always welcome during the “back to school” season especially for those 47 Total Graduates: Higher Education, Secondary,that Adult Vocational Training,need & GED additional assistance with with multiple children might - by Jared Sonderegger, Editor school supplies.

The Grand Traverse Band Health Fair was Held Friday August 16th.

Representatives from local medical facilities, Emergency Management Teams, Public Safety and GTB Gov. Departments were staged at booths in the Strong Heart Center to answer questions and inform the public of the services available to them through these organizations. Plenty of fliers and merch were distributed to attendees. GTB Fire and Law Enforcement had vehicles on display for the children to marvel at. Sports Physicals were offered at the GTB Med Lodge for athletes returning to school. Raffles were also held for items promoting healthier and more active lifestyles.

Following the Health Fair, the “Turtle Concepts” motivational speaking group held a Fashion Show promoting confidence, self-healing and a discussion on forgiveness. Turtle Concepts always promotes better mental heath through getting to love and respect one’s self. The discussion was concerned with past trauma and compassion. Turtle Concepts will return September 14th at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa for those who were

Benodjenh Head Start Graduation

The Benodjenh Center hosted a Head Start program Graduation on August 1st. Families were invited to celebrate the first milestone of their child’s education. Kids and parents were treated to celebratory Drum and dance, a congratulatory address from Joyce McClellan and Chairman McClellan. After the ceremony kids were treated to lunch and activities with families. Congratulations to all these wonderful children, and their proud parents, whether they are graduating from their first or last year of the Head Start program. We look forward to

seeing their many years of success in the future.

GTB 5K / 1 Mile Color Run! On Saturday Aug 24th GTB Strong Heart hosted a 5k Color run (or 1-mile walk) at the Charlevoix tribal community property. A rather large turnout for the event, participants were competing in rather cool morning temperatures. The attending Children enjoyed being sprayed with the provided coloring and even made off with a bottle or two to sneak off and spray the unsuspecting adults.

This was the first color run hosted by the Strong Heart Center and judging by its initial positive reception there should be more in the - by Jared Sonderegger, Editor future.

Cultural Events: Powwow & Language Camp

The Grand Traverse Band held several culturally significant events in August. On the weekend of the 17th and 18th GTB held their annual Jiingtamok. Saturday was a warm and clear day displaying the bright vibrance of the flowing regalia among the lush green forest surrounding the Powwow grounds. Family, friends and newcomers gathered to celebrate Native American Culture. There was a rather large turnout both days, as the roads approaching the powwow grounds were lined with cars. Many families were camped to spend the weekend’s entirety at this eccentric event, filled with great food, vendor items, and cultural celebration.

Following the powwow, the Cultural Department hosted the three-day GTB Annual Language camp. This year’s Language Camp included a variety classes, discussions, and teachings in traditional craftsmanship. The Language and Cultural staff continuously offer culturally significant trainings throughout the year, teaching various traditional activities and Language exercises. It is vital that these Cultural Events persist in order to spread the knowledge and importance of these traditional teachings so that they may live on for generations to come.

September is National Preparedness Month

This month is a perfect time to start an emergency preparedness kit and learn new ways to work on a project with the kids and your pets. Get the kids involved by collecting items for a pet emergency kit and practice evacuating so everyone, yes, even the cat and dog knows what to do if you have to leave in a hurry. Kits should have food, water, medications, important papers and emergency contact information.

Strongheart Health Fair

Friday, August 16th The Strongheart Center hosted their annual Health Fair.

Thursday, August 8th Peshawbetown hosted their annual Back to School Extravaganza.

During this event children from the area got to pick out some awesome backpacks to start there school year with. While everyone was eating and talking we had a great group of kids come out to look at the fire trucks and even spray some water.

Have the tweens and teenagers learn how to turn off utilities in emergencies and who to contact. Get them involved in the planning so they understand what emergency preparedness is and what they can do to help others be prepared.

The annual Health Fair brought many vendors from the surrounding areas including The Salvation Army who had set up just outside the main entrance and they were feeding all of the vendors and the participents of the Health Fair.

Each week during the month of National Preparedness Month there are things we all can do to be prepared.

Members of Leland Fire Department are always thinking of ways to better serve the community.

With the help of Grand Traverse Band Fire Department they are able to do this in a effective and timely manner. With the smoke detectors they have receved they will be going door to door in their community to hand out and help install smoke alarms to better protect their community members.

Always remember to change your smoke alarm There are many more batteries 2 times a year. The best way to remember preparedness tips that you can is to change them on daylight savings time and learn at www.Ready.gov. So take back to standard time. a few minutes today to learn what you can do in an emergency.

Grand Traverse Band Fire Department's Newest Firefighter

Fire Prevention Tip of the Month.

Always remember that unatendand cooking fires can lead to much more then just burnt toast.

You should never attempt to cook or deal with anything fire related while under the influence of drugs or alcohol this could lead to a bad decision which could cost more then a burnt finger.

Never remove your smoke alarm while cooking this could alert the family if anything does ever go wrong.

Never utilize your stove or oven as a way to heat your home, this can cause carbon monoxide poisoning which could cause adverse health affects.

The Grand Traverse Band Fire Department would like to introduce you to our newest Firefighter Nicholas Burkett. Nicholas comes to us from Midland, Michigan with 12+ years of Fire and EMS experience. He worked as a Lieutenant at Lee Township Fire Department and had worked as a Lieutenant in Conroe, Texas for Caney Creek Fire Department. Nicholas will be a great asset to the Fire Department.

Mighty Mac Swim Security

On Sunday Aug. 11th GTB Public Safety/Conservation, along with other state and tribal authorities, were tasked with providing security for the Mighty Mac Swim event on the Straights of Mackinaw. Close to 400 participants swam across the straights on the east side of the bridge. GTB Conservation Officers Bob Duty and Lakota Raphael were tasked with utilizing the Conservation vessel to hold a blocking position on the South West side of the Bridge. Their primary responsibilities were to keep non-emergency ships out of the event space as well as provide any first aid extractions for any struggling swimmers in the choppy current. It was quite a view, witnessing as the more professional swimmers dove into the waves from a huge barge vessel, used to transport the more experienced participants. These seasoned swimmers began several hundred yards from the southern bridge shore line, swam to the Mackinaw City shoreline and then began the long trek to the northern shore. Adding even more time in the water and more distance to the five-mile swim. GTB Conservation did have to interfere with a few swimmers drifting underneath the Bridge. Officers Raphael and Duty instructed these swimmers to push back over into their lane.

Thankfully no one suffered serious injury during the event and only a dozen or so swimmers were pulled from the rough water due to exhaustion.

Senator Peters Visits Boardman Restoration

U.S. Michigan Senator Gary Peters visited the Boardman River Restoration Project in Traverse City on the fourth day of his annual Michigan motorcycle tour. His visit emphasized the status of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Senator Peters discussed his efforts to reauthorize and increase the GLRI, which donated directly to the accomplishments of the Boardman River project.

Senator Peters is a member of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force and stated, “Initiatives like the Boardman River Watershed Restoration Project are prime examples of how the GLRI effectively works with community members and experts on the ground to clean up ecosystems across Michigan.” Senator peters and staff, as well as members of local government, took a brief Kayak trip down the Boardman, from the GTB Fish Pass Site to the Boardman restoration site. A group photo was taken and the press was shown the scope of work that was undertook to restore the river to its natural beauty.

Stream Crossing Improvement Project

This photo was taken with Senator Stabenow’s Staff (both local and DC) on August 9th of the stream crossing improvement project. GTB was being the lead with Conservation Resource Alliance and Leelanau Conservancy, using Farm Bill funds. The project was an awesome collaboration that reflected extremely well on Grand Traverse Band.

Consent Decree Executive Meeting

The Executive Council is held once annually, and is a meeting of all parties to the 2000 and 2007 Consent Decrees. At these meetings, the five CORA tribes, the State of Michigan, and the US Fish and Wildlife service meet to discuss issues related to natural resource management and execution of treaty rights in the waters of the Great Lakes as well as on Inland matter. The parties may request a special meeting to address a specific topic of interest or urgency in a given year if an additional meeting is deemed necessary to address an issue.

The 29th Annual Bob K Golf Classic kicked off Saturday, August 24th. Golfers arrived early and were greeted by sunshine and perfect weather. Bob K welcomed the attendee’s and thanked them all for their continued support over the years. In an act of gratitude and appreciation, the National Indian Gaming Association recognized Bob’s effort’s with the 2019 Chairman’s Leadership Award. As is tradition, Bob K let the attendee’s know this was his last year hosting the Bob K Golf Classic, though this year is definitely his last. 26th - Antrim Garden and Farm Workday. The Antrim/Kewadin Farm has been very productive this season. With the 30’ x 70’ hoophouse in nearly full production, that site has cranked out lots of healthy food!

2019 Programming Review - 2019 Plant Give-Away: $2,500.00 in plant sarts destributed to GTB members and staff during the June Plant Give-Away. At 4 locations (Peshawbestown, Antrim, Benzie, and the Travserse City 3 Mile Office) vegetable plants were distributed to GTB members to help incentivize food production by GTB members at home!

- Food Preservation Workshops: In June and August the Ag Dept. invited food preservation instructor Kara Lynch to host 2 food presevation workshops for GTB tribal members. The cost of the class was covered by the Ag. Dept, helping to incentivize tribal members who are interested in growing and preserving their own fruit and vegetables.

- The Kewadin Community Garden: This new garden space was planted by 8 or so families this season. In years past, the main organizer, Blossom Paul, had dificulty getting gardeners to participate. Facilities Management installed water to the site in the Fall of 2018. In the spring, the planting space was disked by a local farmer (megwetch Blossom Paul for arranging!), tilled, bed shaped, and fenced by the Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Department. The garden was tended not only by residents in Kewadin, but also GTB members from as far away as Traverse City.

- Ag Dept Apple Orchard Management: Over 2 acres of apple orchard in Peshawbestown has been brought back into production.

Public Works Partnership: In partnership with the GTB Public Works Dept, we began managing bio-solid waste sustainably on tribal lands.

- 2019 Ag. Department Food Distribution: In June, the Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Dept. developed a natural relationship with the culinary staff at the Turtle Creek resrtaurants with a shared vision; utilizing GTB grown produce within GTB owned food outlets. The chefs have worked hard to develop new menu otpions that capture the beauty of the diverse produce selection. Lemon Drop (yellow) cucumbers, Dark Purple Opal basil, exotic ground cherries and Shisinto peppers are but a taste of the diverse selection of crops grown this season!

2019 Indian Corn This spring the Ag. Dept planted 2 pounds of traditional “Indain” Flint Corn to be used in cultural programming. We will also be using the corn to start our own seed stock for our 2020 planting!

The GTB Agriculture & Food Sovereignty Dept., with support from GTB EDC, is now vending organically grown produce through Turtle Creek Restaurants. Want to dine on produce grown on tribal lands? Go visit the chefs at Bourbons 72, and Season’s Buffet for a selection of seasonal, fresh harvested produce that supports GTB food sovereignty! Some appitizing dishes made from GTB produce is shown above!

2020 Programming The 2020 growings season is not far away. With so many accomplishments in 2019, we are excited for what 2020 will hold. Some projects we are looking forward to include: - GTB Food Waste: Managing Food Waste from Grand Traverse Resort restuarant outlets.This form of GTB managing its own waste is a step in the right dirrection for food sovereignty and sustainability. Diverting food waste from restuarants can save 100,000’s of pounds of produce from being landfilled annually! Thats a lot of extra trash no longer hauled awatu!

- Meat Chickens: Hosting a poulrty flock (chickens raised for meat) in Peshawbestown to feed GTB restuarant food waste to. The chickens can then be harvested and sold back to GTB restaraunt outlets.

- 2020 Sugar Shack. The Natural Resource Department (NRD) in years past has done a fabulous job innitiating the tribally operated sugar shack.

In 2020, the Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Dept will be collaborating with NRD to make the syrup flow. This program will be passed off to the Ag. Dept in subsequent years.

Peshawbestown Small Farm 2019 has ben a productive season for the Peshawbestown Small Farm. We saw the installation of rfencing, enclosing roughly 3 acres of farm site for development. As this new program grows, we will have plenty of space protected from deer and other hungry critters that will produce food for the GTB community. One way we decided to give back to the community this season was by providing $2,500 of produce to the 2019 Health Fair. Squash, tomatoes, peppers, beans, cucumbers,radishes, kale, basil, pea shoots, and lemon thyme were all ditributed during the event to participants in a “veggie walk” and for veggie vouchers that were distributed by other vendors. The diversity of our produce represents the value we place on diversity. With all agricultural systems, diversity = resilience. A big Megwetch to the 477 staff, Aaron Antoine and Delora Wilson for helping with the event. Also a Megwetch to Blossom Paul, and Julie Derouin for volunteering to harvest, prepare and distribute the beautiful selection of produce. We look forward to many more years of growing produce for community fuctions, elders meals, the food pantry, GTB restuarant outlets, and much more. We have loved working with all the community members who have shown interest in our programming and helped us grow. GTB Genealogy Project

Aanii everyone!

I’ve started meeting with a few of our Elders and the meetings last anywhere from one (1) to two (2) hours. Here is the basic process: 1. You and I will set up an appointment.

2. You sign a release form stating that you are donating your knowledge to the grant.

3. You and I will fill in as much information as possible on you, your parents, your grand parents, and your great grandparents such as Native and English names, clans, birthdates, marriage dates, death dates, etc.

4. I will enter information into our database that is housed at the Eyaawing Museum.

5. Information will made available to all who seek help with tracing their family in 72 years*. *All information gathered will not be shared to anyone for 72 years to encourage honesty from the person donating and protecting privacy of those involved.

This grant is starting from scratch. I do not have any information from Membership Office or from other genealogists. This is a blank canvas.

The purpose is to build a GTB Family tree, together as a community.

I only have twelve (12) more months to complete as much of our GTB tree as possible and I’m seeking everyone’s help. –Miigwetch!
