From the Office of Tribal Chairman David Arroyo
Aanii Boozhoo, and hello to Makwa-giizis (February), the second month of the year Niizhing-mdaaswaakshi-niizhtana-shinswi (2023). I hope that you survived the December 2022 holiday weather conditions, that you had a pleasant holiday season, and that you are staying warm and safe.
I encourage tribal members to sign in to the virtual Anishinaabemowin classes held weekdays from 11:00am to noon (Eastern Daylight Time). The link is https://bit.ly/GTB-Anishinaabemowin which also has a link to recorded classes, contact information to request class slides, and staff names and phone numbers. As stated on the website:
Anishinaabemowin and Culture are a vital part of who we are as Anishinaabek. This is our identity and the two cannot be separated. Our Culture and Language have been oral teachings that have been brought down from generations past. It is of utmost importance today that those who are still knowledgeable and those who are presently learning our Language and Culture, must continue on the teachings for generations to come through oral, written, visual aids, necessary so these teachings will continue on.
February 2023 upcoming events include Kchi
Wiikwedong Anishinaabek Maawnjidowin - Round Dance on February 11th at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa; and Adult Life Skills classes every Wednesday at 1:30pm at the Medicine Lodge.

HAPPY RETIREMENT CINDI MCLLRATH
Cindi made huge strides for GTB Education Department in her 26 years as a Teacher. On behalf of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indian, Chi Miigwech for your dedication and the impacted you made with GTB Students! Best wishes for a retirement that’s as successful as your career.
Aanii!
This has been the most amazing quarter of a century anyone could hope for. It has given me the opportunity to work with so many truly wonderful people. I was there when a father and daughter graduated together, and when three generations of the same family were helping each other through the same math class together, when young mothers brought their newborns to school, and when some of my students walked on. I have enjoyed watching the processes and solutions that students have brought to THEIR education, and I have learned a lot from you – mostly to just love learning, sharing, caring, and growing together. I have to thank my “partner in crime” – MA (if you know, you know) for everything. I would never have made it without you. Here’s to some of the most wonderful people on the planet!!
I love you all, keep in touch, Cindi

Carbon Monoxide Public Service Announcement
GTB Fire Rescue and Suttons Bay Bingham Fire Rescue recently responded to a home with a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm activation.
Firefighters were able to detect low levels of CO throughout the house. While no symptoms or illnesses had occurred at the time of the call, if it would have gone unnoticed for a few hours, symptoms would have started occurring. Having a working CO monitored in the home potentially saved the lives of this family.
Firefighters were able to locate the source of the CO and it was fixed. GTB Fire Rescue has a limited amount of CO detectors available for tribal members.
Please contact the GTB Fire Department (231) 534-7666 if you are in need of one.
What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon monoxide, also known as CO, is called the “Invisible Killer” because it’s a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. More than 150 people in the United States die every year from accidental nonfire-related CO poisoning associated with consumer products, including generators. Other products include faulty, improperly-used or incorrectly-vented fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, stoves, water heaters and fireplaces.
Know the Symptoms of CO Poisoning
Because CO is odorless, colorless, and otherwise undetectable to the human senses, people may not know that they are being exposed. The initial symptoms of low to moderate CO poisoning are similar to the flu (but without the fever).
They include:
High level CO poisoning results in progressively more severe symptoms, including:

• Headache • Fatigue • Shortness of breath • Nausea • Dizziness
• Mental confusion • Vomiting • Loss of muscular coordination • Loss of consciousness • Ultimately death GTB NEWS 13 February 2023 Mkwa Giizis (Bear Moon)
SYNCYTIAL RESPIRATORY
VIRUS (RSV)
RSV is a common respiratory virus that circulates each year in the United States, usually from late fall through early spring RSV can be serious, especially for infants and older adults
Healthy Choices for a Healthy Heart
Fat provides energy for the body. Native people hunted and harvested food like buffalo, seal, fish, nuts, and seeds that provided “good” fats. As food choices changed over the years, so have the kinds of fats we eat. Today, our food includes more of the fats that may cause heart disease. Heart disease is more common among people with diabetes.
Heart-Healthy Fat Choices
PREVENTION
SYMPTOMS
Runny nose decreased appetite coughing, sneezing, fever, and wheezing
Cover coughs and sneezes wash hands often, avoid contact with sick people
HELP PREVENT THE SPREAD OF RSV
Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your upper shirt sleeve, not your hands
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
Avoid close contact such as kissing shaking hands and sharing cups and eating utensils, with others
Clean frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs and mobile devices
Types of Fat
Saturated fats raise cholesterol levels, which is a risk for heart disease. Saturated fats are found in animal products and tropical oils. These fats are solid at room temperature. Unsaturated fats can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and provide nutrition. They come from plant oils and fatty fish. Unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature.
Good to know
v Fats have more calories than carbohydrates and protein. For example:
1 gram of fat = 9 calories.
1 gram of carbohydrate or protein = 4 calories.
v Eating large amounts of fat can lead to weight gain
Limit foods high in saturated fat. Use foods rich in unsaturated fat in place of foods high in saturated fat.

GTB NEWS 14 February 2023 Mkwa Giizis (Bear Moon)
When you hold your baby in your arms for the first time, and those big eyes lock into yours, you fall hopelessly in love with life.
Did you know that baby’s first tooth bud starts to form 4 months in utero? During pregnancy, what mom eats, and drinks mightily impacts the formation of baby’s teeth and jaws.
WHY ARE “BABY” TEETH IMPORTANT
Your baby’s nutritional needs increase as your child grows and this nutrition will come from the ability to eat many more foods as the teeth erupt. The presence of healthy teeth contributes greatly to developing speech. A baby’s smile is so precious, cuter with that first tooth. Your child can develop the huge variety of human expressions with a healthy mouth and teeth. Each tooth is indeed precious and needs to be cherished. Even babies with the most vigilant parents will experience injuries as they begin crawling, walking, climbing, jumping, swinging, rolling... are we talking about a human or a monkey, here? Injuries to the little monkey’s teeth and mouth are common. I recommend a fluffy bath towel be laid over the tub’s edge during bath time, along with a soft bath mat on the floor. Don’t let children sit on tables or counters. Always secure children in a car seat. Try to keep children away from stairs. Before age one year old, a visit to a dentist is advised.
FLUORIDE IS RECOMMENDED DAILY
Most metropolitan areas have fluoride added to the drinking water; call you county health department to find out. The pediatrician or dentist can recommend fluoride supplements.
COMMUNITY HEALTH REPRESENTATIVE (CHR)
TCHR’s offer weekly home visit, medication refill request, scheduling appointments, coordinate referrals, assisted with filling out forms, meal preparation, emotional support. For additionally services contact your local Community Health

AVOID SUGARY DRINKS AND FOODS
Table sugar (sucrose on food labels) is the favorite food for the evil Streptococcus mutans, the bacteria responsible for decay. Sticky foods adhere to the crevices of the teeth, increasing decay. Wholesome foods, including fruits and vegetables and meats and crackers and dairy products, contribute to healthy teeth. Children only need water and milk to drink.
As soon as the first tooth appears, begin the healthy habit of daily brushing. Of course, your little monkeys-I mean children-will mimic everything you do, so be sure to let them see you brushing and flossing. Mom or dad should brush baby’s teeth in little circles with a small, soft toothbrush. If toothpaste is distasteful, use water. There are several toothpastes formulated for babies, and they have a bland taste and are not as gritty. Use no more than the size of a pea.
TEETH BRUSHING SONGS
“This is the way we brush our teeth, brush our teeth, this is the way we brush our teeth so early in the morning.” And...“This is the way we brush our teeth, brush our teeth, brush our teeth, just before bedtime.”
Or... “The bristles on the brush go ‘round & ‘round, ‘round & ‘round, ‘round & ‘round, the bristles of the brush go ‘round & ‘round all through your mouth.”

CONGRATULATIONS 2022 SUCCESSFUL ELK HUNTERS
1. Only males have antlers- Just like their close relatives, moose, in the case of elks too, it is just the males who grow antlers. Their antlers are covered with a thin layer of velvety skin which starts coming off during summers or warmer seasons.
Males grow antlers during spring and shed them every year during winters. They also use them to fight amongst themselves and assert dominance. They also attract the attention of the females by doing the same.
AMAZING ELK FACTS
2. Elks have stomachs with 4 chambers that aid in digestion- Did you know that human beings only have one chamber in their stomachs? But that is not the case for elks. Here is another fascinating fact about elks; they have four chambers in their stomachs!
This is another similarity with cows. The chambers are there to make sure that the animal can swallow a larger portion that can rather be regurgitated and re-chewed for better digestion.
3. Elks are led by a strong female- Elks are extremely social animals. They love company, and you will usually find them in groups called herds. The herd can consist of hundreds and sometimes even thousands of elks. Herds are usually matriarchal in nature and are controlled and run by a female. This is especially surprising because we do not usually see a lot of matriarchal groups in animals.
4. Elks are important in the restoration of the ecosystem- With their usual behavior of foraging and browsing, Elks play an extremely important part in the ecosystem. Typically, they chew on wild flowering plants, which helps stimulate and promote the growth of these plants.
This is because elks act as an active source of pollination for these plants. Their constant foraging also keeps a check on the overgrowth of these plants and shrubs.
5. They can live longer than other species of deer- When it comes to deer, they usually do not live past ten to fifteen years. However, that is not the case for elks. They can live well past their twenties.
In fact, elks can easily live up to twenty-four years in the wild, and in captivity, they can live up to twenty-seven years if not more.

The 2022 GTB Sugar Bush was the most productive since activities began in 2018. Over 25 gallons of maple syrup was produced at the Natural Resource Department Putnam Road Office. The syrup was used in programming hosted by the Agriculture Dept, sold at Eagletown Market (display stand shown in picture). Syrup
drawing. The 2023 GTB Sugar Bush will see at least 200 trees tapped. That will be an increase of at least 30%; up from ~120 trees tapped in 2022. A goal of producing at least 35 gallons of syrup has been proposed. The flow of sap is dependent on weather conditions. 40 gallons of sap is required to make 1 gallon of syrup. Our 2023 goal will require a minimum of 1,400 gallons of sap to be collected.
If you are interested in participating in the GTB Sugar Bush on weekdays from late February through early April, please contact the Agriculture Manager; William Derouin.

GREEN COMMITTEE RECYCLE, REUSE AND REPURPOSE
The Green Committee is finally back in action and striving for a more green, more sustainable planet and incorporating Anishinaabe culture. Native Americans were the first environmentalist and it’s important to continue protecting the planet. How can you help? Visit our website: www.gtbindians.org/greencommittee.asp look for ideas. If you want to be a member of the GTB Green Committee or would like to share information share with us or the community please contact us: greencommittee@gtb-nsn.gov
1. Eliminate Single Use Plastics- make your own feast bundle & bring it with you to community events. Eliminate single uses straws by using aluminum straws and keep using them.
Use bamboo toothbrushes instead of the standard plastic toothbrushes. Some experts believe it takes more than 100 years for a standard plastic toothbrushes to break down.
How It Helps
The Environment: Single use plastics are correlated with many environmental problems. If we eliminate the use of plastic, it will help us and our surroundings!
The more we all do to reduce our single-use plastic consumption, the healthier we will be and the healthier our planet will be!
2. Go Vegan or Vegetarian - Try it one week, a day or even one meal for the week!
How It Helps The Environment:
-Water conservation
-Keeps soil clean
-Cuts greenhouse gas emissions
-Mitigate climate change
-Preventing species extinction
-Reduce energy consumption
-Reducing air pollution
-Preserving habitats & species
-Stabilizing biodiversity
-Keeps waterways clean
-Slowing livestock emissions
3. Used PlantBased Laundry Detergent- Look for detergents that are biodegradable and contain vegetablebased surfactants as opposed to petrochemicalbased surfactants. Some chemicals, such as phosphates, are also bad for the environment, disrupting the natural balance in rivers and other bodies of water, which can cause problems for both fauna and flora.
Tips:
-Check for recyclable packaging.
-Check if the detergent is effective in low temperatures.
-Check if the container has a pump.
-Check your washer. If you have a high-efficiency (HE) washer, you need a highefficiency laundry detergent. You can use HE detergents.
4. Start Green Cleaning TodayMake the switch today and rest easy knowing you are protecting yourself, and the health of your family and planet.
Help The Environment: When you choose to use green cleaning products, you are also making a vote to protect the environment. Most ideal ecofriendly cleaning products are made using sustainable manufacturing practices and naturally derived, safe, non-toxic, and biodegradable ingredients that don't negatively impact the environment
5. Reduce Water
Use- Don’t waste water. Fix leaky faucets, collect rainwater or snow to water plants. Water is life!
How It Helps The Environment: Matthews states, "A dripping shower head or faucet can waste more than 5000 liters of water every year. If you don’t repair a dripping shower faucet, you are increasing your water bill and wasting water which is precious. Water is important for the planet"
Reduce Water:
1. Turning off the tap while you brush your teeth.
2. Put a little water into the sink to rinse your razor with instead of running the faucet
3. Shorten your shower by just a minute or two.
6. Save PaperThink before you print!
Did you know it takes 17 trees, 380gal of oil, 5953gal of water, and 587lbs. to make 1 ton of paper?
5 Paper Tips: Think Before you Print!
1. Use both Sides of paper
2. Go Digital- Read, send, and store digital documents
3. Be selective about what you print
4. Use recycled paper
5. Recycle paper
How It Helps
The Environment: - Trees combat climate change, they clean the air and provide oxygen - Trees conserve energy, save water and prevent water pollution
- Trees provide food, shield, heals us, and promotes unity
- Trees shelter wildlife, prevent soil erosion
