Can you believe that September has flown by already and before we know it the new year will be upon us! Although time seems to be fleeting, I do love the Autumn season with all the family gatherings, the food, the parties, the laughter, the stories from time past, and Mom Ma’s favorite dish that nobody can beat. I enjoy the season change and my hope and prayer is that every family will experience this colorful time of year with the crisp fresh air and a sense of rejuvenation.

We as a Tribe are also in a season of change as there have been necessary changes in many areas in the best interest of GTB. This past month has included some very difficult shifts within the government side that some individuals have had a problem accepting; however, these changes were needed to make departments operate more efficiently.

It is my hope that you have faith in the system in place. We have been faced with issues that have forced us to reevaluate certain policies and procedures to better serve tribal members and employees. We will continue to be vigilant in addressing safety standards across the board. Please know GTB takes very seriously your wellbeing and safety is at the forefront of decisions.

NEW STAFF – WELCOME TO TEAM GTB! I am happy to announce we have a new Health Director, Soumit Pendharkar. He has provided an initial evaluation of the department and reports we can start to cut cost, save money and provide more services. We are working towards improving our management of third-party billing which will increase revenues. I believe this is a much needed change with billing and is well overdue. I also believe we should look at having our own clinic in Traverse City which will benefit several tribal members in many ways; this is open for discussions.

We need to quit operating in fear and selfishness and instead start looking at what is best for the Tribe and if that means expand in TC then let’s do a feasibility study to see if it’s practicable. We also need to look at our Dental Clinic and see if it’s better to go back to the way it was with each family having their own dentist in their area avoiding unnecessary travel to Peshawbestown. Ideally, the services would be the same and potentially less expensive for tribal members. More discussion is needed here as well.

I am also pleased to announce we have a new CEO for Grand Traverse Economic Development (GTED), Roger Stull. He is an Air Force veteran with knowledge and experience working with military and defense contracts.

I am looking forward to what he will be able to bring to our LLC. On the EDC side we have a new Attorney Chad Depetro who we are excited to have on board as well.

There has been a change in the Courts with a new Judge Ken Akini and Appellate Judge Matthew Massey.

Contracts are being worked out and I look forward to them joining Tribal Court.

Bn a ak wi i G i i z i s / ( FAL L IN G L EAV ES M OON) MEETINGS & COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS: On September 11, a meeting with the Office of Governor Whitmer took place re: 1993 Compact Tribes and Sports Betting in Lansing, Michigan. There will be much more discussion on this topic soon – stay tuned!

On September 17, GTB hosted a Grand Opening Ceremony for Herkner Property! Miigwetch to Arlene Kashata and Tom Peters who facilitated the traditional part of the ceremony to help us do things in a good way. Miigwetch to Ken Ockert, Rob Kalbfleisch, Sonya Zotigh, Nicki Basch, Housing staff, Council and everyone that have worked tirelessly to make new housing options for tribal members a reality! Herkner property is a work in progress and being developed in stages, as finances/budget allows.

A dedication ceremony was held on September 28, at Turtle Creek Casino and Hotel to honor and bless the cultural corridor. It is with great pride to have an area dedicated to our history and our beautiful Anishinaabe way of life. Miigwetch to the artists for sharing your work and to the staff for bringing this vision to life. We are truly honored and blessed as a people for the opportunity to showcase who we are because who we are is something to be very proud of.

I still have concerns for The Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. I feel we need more tribal members working in management to give us better insight in daily operations. I have seen and experienced what tribal members have been claiming and being the owners of this property, we should never be treated like second class citizens; change will come.

I believe the resort should include our cultural identity from top to bottom. I am not ashamed of who we are, in fact I am very proud, and my hope is that everyone is proud as Anishinaabe; we have a beautiful way of life.

I am also pleased to announce that our Fiber Optics project is coming along fine. The Herkner property has Wi-Fi available We will continue to be vigilant in protecting the best interest in the apartments with more to come! Wi-Fi service will not be of our Nation in all areas knowing the decisions we make free, however it will be discounted and later evaluated as we today will impact future generations! progress in this new venture.

Welcome! Before you complete your application for a home here, please review our resident selection criteria.

The term "applicant(s)" under these criteria mean the person(s) that are over the age of 18 and will be occupying the apartment home. The term "occupant(s)" in these criteria means the person(s) that are under the age of 18 that will be occupying the apartment home.

These rents do not include utilities. Those would be the responsibility of the tenant.

No application or holding fees. Pet deposit will be $100 Proposed Eligibility Criteria: A total household income of $ $27,216 will be required for a 1-bedroom unit A total household income of $32,472 will be required for a 2-bedroom unit Background requirements for our Market Rentals are proposed to be: 1. No registered Sex Offenders 2. 7 year wait on Felonies with no additional offenses (acts of violence or drugs) 3. 2 year wait on Misdemeanors (acts of violence or drugs)

Occupancy Guidelines Lease signers must be at least 18 years of age.

Our properties allow up to the following number of occupants per unit. One bedroom units - three persons; Two bedroom units -five persons; Three bedroom units -seven persons.

Any person over the age of 18, must qualify as a new resident and be placed on the lease. The addition of a Resident to the residential lease agreement that results in exceeding the Occupancy Guidelines will not be allowed.

Identification A copy of both the state issued ID(s) and social security card will be required upon application for residency.

Application for Residency An Application for Residency must be completed and maintained for each person over the age of 18.

Qualifying Standards • Rental History: Up to 36 months of rental history may be verified on present and previous residences. A positive record of prompt monthly payment, sufficient notice, with no damages is expected. For applicants who are homeowners, permission must be granted to verify payment history with bank or lending institution.

If there is an eviction or balance due to any apartment community or private owner reflective on the credit report, it must be at least 3 years old, and positive rental history must be established in the interim.

• Credit History: An unsatisfactory credit report can disqualify an applicant from renting an apartment home.

An unsatisfactory report is one which reflects past or current bad debts, late payments or unpaid bills, liens, judgments, foreclosures or bankruptcies. If the applicant is rejected for poor credit history the applicant may contact the reporting agency that provided the credit report. An applicant rejected for the unsatisfactory credit is encouraged to obtain a copy of the credit report from the agency and correct any erroneous information that may be on the report.

New GTB Administration Building Survey

Ahnee GTB Tribal Members & GTB Employees: Through grants and long-term guaranteed loan financing, the Grand Traverse Band Government is evaluating & assessing developing a plan for a NEW Administration Building. There have been comprehensive studies completed on the oldest to newest buildings in Peshawbestown that have served us well but many are costing the Tribe a lot of money. One of the main issues is that we have 17 buildings that require cleaning, maintenance, seasonal work, and capital expenditures. Currently our costs per square foot to manage all of this plus our outlying county buildings is very high, the annual budget for space costs for several years ranges from $2.2 to $2.7 million.

We would appreciate hearing from GTB Tribal membership and employees through a survey of what you would envision for a NEW GTB Administration Building. Leadership and managers have been discussing this for several years and themselves envision how much more efficient a one-stop shop building/facility would be for providing services to the GTB Membership. A few of the major questions that have come up are: where the NEW Administration building would be located, exactly what services would be housed there, and how do we ensure it fits into our future growth and development.

EXCITING NEWS! Tribal Council has approved an increase dollar amount available to each elder the “Elders Emergency Service Component” for FY19. within the six-county service area and there are no income requirement.

The funding for this service are categorized on your age ranging from $600 to $1000.

This program is for all elders living

and amounts: $600 $800 $1000

The Elders Emergency Service program is to assist elder’s and is not limited to any situation.

Examples: Food, Heating, cooling, snow removal @ $25/per trip and lawn care up to $25 per cut, appliance purchase, clothing, even reimbursement for payments that you incurred This program can be used in conjunction with LIHEAP and/or HUMAN SERVICES. Each Elder is required to complete an application. In order for the application to be processed in a timely manner, it is important that the directions for this program be followed and completed properly.

Procedures for program are as follows: • Application must be filled out completely, signed and dated by the applicant.

• Supporting documentation must be submitted with application • Assistance request must be for primary residence.

• Utility vendors that give a lock in rate must be documented by the vendor • Reimbursement- Is allowed -show proof of payment. o Can’t reimburse when paid by another GTB program or Agency • No income guidelines and is open to all elders living in the service area This is an exciting service made available again for you and we are pleased to service you. Bn a ak wi i G i i z i s / ( FAL L IN G L EAV ES M OON) GRAND TRAVERSE BAND OF OTTAWA AND CHIPPEWA INDIANS TITLE VI PART C CAREGIVER SUPPORT PROGRAM PROCEDURES Purpose: It will be the purpose of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Title VI Part C Caregiver Support Program to offer support services to all eligible Native American Caregivers, Grandparents or older relative residing in the service area as well as respite care when program funds are available.

The Caregiver Support Program provides a comprehensive referral and service system for caregivers. This is for families/ individuals who are caregivers to elders who are chronically ill or who has a life altering physical, mental or developmental disability, and for grandparents or older individuals who is the primary caregiver for a child or a relative of a child by blood, marriage, or adoption, or raising the child informally and who is 55 years of age or older and lives with the child. Services available include information about services, caregiver training, support groups, counseling, assistance to caregivers in gaining services, and respite services to compliment care provided by caregivers. This is not an exclusive list.

PROCEDURES: Eligibility 1. Priority; Caregivers who are older individual with the greatest social and economic need, Older individuals with the greatest economic need particularly of low-income individuals, Grandparent/Older individuals providing care to individuals with severe disabilities, including raising children/children with disabilities, and to Family caregivers who provide care to older individuals with the greatest social and economic needs.

2. Care Recipient (i.e., the person whom the caregiver is providing care) 55 years or older must reside within the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Service area and be a federally recognized tribal member.

3. Care Recipient under 18 must reside with the grandparent/ older individual in the Grand Traverse Band of Indians Tribal Services area.

4. Caregiver (i.e., the person providing care to the care recipient) must be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe and reside within the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Service Area. Also meet one of the following: • Caregivers are Native Americans who are 55 years and older, who provide care and support services to the care recipient that are 55 years and older who, for reason of illness or frailty; • Caregivers are Native Americans who are under 54 years and age, who provide care and support services to the care recipient who is 55 years and older, for reason of illness or frailty or to an individual with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder with neurological and organic brain dysfunction; or • Grandparents/Older individual (55) years or older, who are primary caregivers for and/or child or a relative of a child by blood, marriage, or adoption, or raising a child informally under 18 years of age and whom cannot function independently.

5. The Care Recipient 55 years or older must need assistance with at least two of the criteria of Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) that includes eating, dressing, bathing, transferring, toileting, walking, shopping, doing laundry, managing money, taking medication, and require supervision due to Alzheimer’s or other Dementia.

6. The Care Recipient 55 years or older with two of the Activities of Daily Living cannot be a caregiver when being cared by a caregiver through the GTB Caregiver program.

This is due to prevent and eliminate stress upon the care

recipient and to prevent fraudulent activity.

7. Respite Care provides the caregiver with “time off” from their care giving duties where the caregiver chooses his/her own respite worker. Respite care range from a few hours a day to a week or more. The respite place and the length of time depends on the needs of the family and the available resources. Respite Service Agreement and Responsibilities and a conduct of a complete background will be required before services are rendered.

8. The Respite Provider must be age 18 or older.

9. Respite Providers/Caregivers are not considered employees of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians but are temporary program participants receiving services.

10. Family members or other who show proof that Caregivers/ Respite Providers are not taking proper care of the Care receiver will be immediately terminated.

11. Elder Site Coordinator are ineligible to receive respite support for elders during working hours.

The Tribal Caregiver Support Program provides: 1. Respite Assistance 2. Opportunity for the Caregiver to access assistance services.

3. Caregiver Training 4. Caregiver and/or Grandparents/older individuals Support and Support Groups 5. Resource assistance information will be collected and provided to the Tribal Caregiver clients who are in the Tribal Programs service area.

6. Contracting for services from local health care agencies for: Caregiver training, forming caregiver support groups, and basic caregiver coping skills.

7. Background checks on Respite Providers; Caregivers/ Respite providers are responsible for submitting documents to conduct a background check.

The Tribal Caregiver Support Program does not provide: 1. Mediation for family conflicts. Tribal Caregiver Support Program is to remain impartial.

Elders Open Forum

Tuesday, September 10th, 2019 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Traverse City Satellite Office

Chairman McClellan began discussion at approximately 10:15

a.m. Tribal Council members in attendance were Chairman McClellan, Treasurer Rohl, and Secretary Frankenberger. Chairman McClellan began by reminding the Elders of the Pow wow on September 28th at Turtle Creek Casino and Hotel, in conjunction with State Indian Day. He also mentioned that the film Blood Memory, which was one of the potential Native American film selections for Traverse City Film Fest, will be shown on September 27th at the State Theatre in Traverse City. Additional discussion of community events followed.

Chairman McClellan discussed a meeting he and several other Council members will be attending with Governor Whitmer and the other 1993 Compact Tribes to discuss sports betting.

GTB Elder Leonard Corey asked how things are coming along with the new EDC CEO. Chairman McClellan stated the new CEO is a “workaholic” and that he will be evaluating all the properties and programs. More information will be coming forward shortly.

This will give more insight into how each business is performing.

Treasurer Rohl added that when business lose money, it takes away from Per Cap and services; it is the goal of the new EDC CEO to make sure our businesses make a profit.

GTB Elder Sandra Yannott spoke next. She discussed the recently developed beach park at the Getz property for Tribal Members’ use. She stated there was no contact between home owners in the area regarding this park, and nothing in the GTB Newsletter to explain what was going on with the beach/park.

Sandra stated she would have appreciated a cooperation letter or more communication on this. Chairman McClellan stated the development of the beach arose from discussion at various meetings and is wanted by the GTB members in Peshawbestown.

Treasurer Rohl added the beach project had been discussed at various community meetings and Elders Open Forum meetings.

Sandra expressed concerns about who will maintain the park.

Treasurer Rohl replied that there is a fund dedicated to park maintenance.

GTB Elder Debra Fox stated that streetlights along McKeese road need to be fixed, and there needs to be more lights on the hill on McKeese road.

The Bay Shore Steel Works company was discussed. Leonard had previously asked for an update regarding the LLC. Treasurer Rohl replied that we are in the process of hiring a new LLC CEO; the candidate has been offered a contract and is very experienced.

Treasurer Rohl stated BSSW is doing very well and added that a grant was recently received for updating the equipment there and to offer job training. There is the hope of establishing a mentoring program with BSSW so GTB members can learn welding and other trades. She added we are looking forward to securing more contracts for BSSW. The school building on Cherrybend road was discussed.

Chairman McClellan stated GTB has not purchased this building and added that it is not up for sale at this time. He stated we are looking at other similar opportunities to help the tribe. GTB Elder Ernie Gablow discussed a school that was recently built in Traverse City and stated that if we want a school, we should build our own building as the cost would be cheaper than purchasing an existing building.

Leonard spoke again to discuss the Herkner Road housing project. He stated the site looks very nice now but is wondering who will maintain it. He stated that we have to set a precedence for the public and that sometimes we let things get lax and not kept up. Chairman McClellan mentioned the open house for the Herkner property which is scheduled for September 17, 2019 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. An Elder asked if the Herkner apartments will be open to the public, or just GTB members. At this time they are available for GTB members only. Secretary Frankenberger added that we are trying to get more funding for Herkner. What was done at the Herkner site was all paid for through existing funds, not grants. We are trying to expand and get more grants. Tribal Manager Sonya Zotigh added that we recently applied for a $5 million competitive grant and stated that Tribal Council approved a Housing consultant group to come on and help secure grant opportunities.

Cannabis was discussed. Secretary Frankenberger stated we are working on hiring an attorney who specializes in cannabis, as their sole focus. We need an expert who specializes in this area to advise us on how to proceed. Treasurer Rohl added that Tribal Council does not want our laws to be more restrictive than the State of Michigan’s laws regarding cannabis.

GTB Elder Debra Fox discussed the cost of a jail bed for tribal members. She stated that we are being charged $40 a day, whereas the average citizen is charged $15 a day. This is affecting Tribal members’ per capita. Chairman McClellan stated that there was an agreement done when we gave 2% funding that the cost would be $35 for a bed. He stated we need to reevaluate this.

Treasurer Rohl added that something needs to be done about this.

We already pay for the beds, and they still charge tribal members $35 per bed. Sonya Zotigh added that in this last 2% round, Tribal Council questioned the allocation for the beds.

The GTB fiber project was discussed. Sonya Zotigh stated there was a Work Session held recently to discuss the project. She stated that as soon as the WIFI connection at the Herkner site goes live, it should go live in Peshawbestown as well.

GTB Elder Anna Harwood spoke next. She asked what is going on with Housing in Peshawbestown and Benzie; there are lots of vacant houses and three apartments in Benzie that are empty.

She stated there is an Elder who would like to move into one of the Benzie apartments and has been waiting since April. Sonya Zotigh replied that she has met with Housing manager Nicki Basch to review the vacancies on the waiting list. She is aware of the Elder in Benzie and as far as she knows, Housing is working with that elder. She stated she will double check with Nicki for more information.

Sandra Yannott spoke again to ask if she could get a privacy fence that separates the beach driveway from her property. She stated she is right next to the beach. Chairman McClellan stated that Council can look into that request. Sandra discussed the busy foot traffic near her property due to the beach park. Secretary Frankenberger stated that they are working on getting signage posted. Sonya Zotigh added that Ron Anderson is working on getting a gate for the park. She mentioned there will be a grand opening ceremony next year.

Sonya Zotigh spoke at this time to share more information regarding Anna’s concerns about Benzie housing. Sonya stated she heard from Nicki Basch that two units in Benzie will be move-in ready on September 20th. The elder Anna had mentioned is in line for one of those units.

GTB Elder Ernie Gablow spoke again to discuss the rent rates at the Herkner apartments. He questioned the high rates and affordability. Secretary Frankenberger replied that there are GTB members that are paying much higher rental rates in the Traverse City area, who would like to get into somewhere more affordable.

She reiterated that Herkner was paid for 100% out of GTB Funds, rather than from any grant funding or HUD funding. She stated they would like to use funding to eventually put up low-income units. Until more grant funds are secured, no additional lowincome units can be built. Secretary Frankenberger added that it was not this current sitting Council that determined that Herkner apartments should be market rental rates; that was the previous Council. Ernie also discussed problems with permits through Garfield township, and asked if that is resolved. Chairman McClellan stated that has been resolved. Sonya Zotigh received more information in an e-mail following Elders Open Forum regarding permits and zoning. In that email, Robert Kalbfleisch stated that the only ordinances we will be dealing with in Garfield Township

are water and sewer utilities. The Herkner property is in Trust, so we do not have to follow any township or county zoning ordinances.

State Indian Day Powwow & Cultural Corridor

The Grand Traverse Band held the State Indian Day Powwow on the property next to Turtle Creek Casino and Hotel, behind the new Turtle creek market, on Saturday September 28th. There was a great turnout for the event which offered prizes for dance specials and was host to several Native vendors. The Anishnaabemowin Cultural Program did a fantastic job putting the event together and may make this a reoccurring celebration judging by the turnout and the overall positive mood from those in attendance.

Herkner Ribbon Cutting

Proceeding the celebration Turtle Creek Casino Staff held a re-dedication ceremony for the GTB Cultural Corridor located on the third level of Turtle Creek casino, leading to the Hotel. This effort has brought new authentic artifacts donated to the Cultural Corridor that are now on display. Be sure to stop by and check out these new pieces of GTB History. The Herkner Apartments grand opening was held at 3 pm on Tuesday September 17th. Nikki Basch welcomed all the attendees before introducing Tom Peters and Arlene Kashata who performed a blessing ceremony for the new property.

Miigwetch Tom and Arlene! After the ceremony finished Tribal Chairman Thurlow “Sam” McClellan spoke on the future of the Herkner property and its bright future. The formalities were finished with a ribbon cutting, followed by tours of each of the apartment complexes. The event was a huge leap forward in providing additional housing options for those looking to reside in the Traverse City area. Additional complex’s on the property are currently being designed and developed.

Suicide Prevention Walk

7+1+1 Turtle Concepts

On September 14th the AFSP’s (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) held an “Out of the Darkness” suicide prevention and awareness walk at the Open Space Park in Traverse City. Several members of the Grand Traverse Band were in attendance to show support for the cause, as well as several representatives from the GTB Behavioral Health department. The AFSP raises millions in support of suicide prevention programs each year through walks and fund-raisers such as these. These programs help prevent treat and unite those who have been affected by suicide. Every year, over a quarter of a million people from hundreds of cities across the United States take part in the “Out of the Darkness” walk, raising awareness and assets that could potentially save lives and bring a - by Jared Sonderegger, Editor sense of hope to those affected by suicide.

“Turtle Concepts” founder Dave Jones returned on September 14th to provide another innovative workshop to inspire and empower those in attendance at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. The main emphasis of the workshop was the 7 Grandfather teachings, with including happiness and forgiveness in ones life. Dave always reminds those in attendance the importance of confidence and how important encouragement and understanding is for the heart to allow forgiveness. The forgiveness aspect is a crucial part of the healing process, in order to let go of pain and truly find happiness. The presentation followed GTB’s participation in the “Out of Darkness” walk held at the open Space in Traverse City.

Turtle Concepts always leaves those in attendance with a new found sense of encouragement and adds more tools to assist with trauma and healing.

conducted the 17th annual Fall Feast on Saturday September 21st at the Arthur Duhamel Marina. There was a great turnout this year on a beautiful day. Many Prizes were distributed, the Grand Prize was two Kayaks with paddles. Families had plenty of activities and the marina was stocked with plenty of fish for the fishing activity.

Tanya Rapheal provided the delicious feast for all to enjoy and Chairman McClellan Emceed the event.

Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Department 2019 Programming Review - 2019 Plant Give-Away: $2,500.00 in plant starts distributed to GTB mem- - Food Preservation Workshops: In June and August the Ag Dept. invited food preservation instructor Kara Lynch to host 2 food preservation workbers and staff during the June Plant Give-Away. At 4 locations (Peshawbestown, Antrim, Benzie, and the Travserse City 3 Mile Office) vegetable shops for GTB tribal members. The cost of the class was covered by the Ag. plants were distributed to GTB members to help incentivize food production Dept, helping to incentivize tribal members who are interested in growing and preserving their own fruit and vegetables.

- The Kewadin Community Garden: This new garden space was planted - Ag Dept Apple Orchard Management: Over 2 acres of apple orchard by 8 or so families this season. In years past, the main organizer, Blossom in Peshawbestown has been brought back into production.

Charlevoix Barn Repairs This fall, the Ag Dept took a 477 trainee, Aaron Antoine, up to Charlevoix to spend a few days making some repairs to a former dairy barn complex near the GTB Charlevoix satellite office. This barn complex is the remains of a once successful dairy operation. The dairy operation was closed decades ago and the barn complex has sat vacant since then. Repairs to the roof are needed to save this impressive structure. With the majority of the straw cleaned out of the hand-hewn timber framed barn section we can now assess the work needed to maintain this structure. In all this barn complex has over 30,000 square foot under roof!

The Use Of An Old Barn With so much of our areas economy driven by tourism it is no surprise that one potential use for this old barn complex is as an event venue. With electrical service, water, and a few other basic amenities, this barn could be turned into a valuable venue for weddings and other large gatherings. This structure could be over 100 years old, and has a beautiful interior that could be well maintained once a new roof and some structural repairs are made.

Another potential use for this barn complex is as a place to operate a cattle or bison herd.

The barn complex is set-up to house cattle, and could easily be modified to house bison.

With some investment in staff, fencing, and start-up costs, this facility could provided naturally raised protein to the tribal community. Neither of these barn use options are inexpensive. However, with the goal of becoming food sovereign in the future for GTB, utilizing existing infrastructure such as this barn is a good option.

2020 Programming The 2020 growings season is not far away. With so many accomplishments in 2019, we are excited for what 2020 will hold. Some projects we are looking forward to include: - GTB Food Waste: Managing Food Waste from Grand Traverse Resort restaurant outlets. This form of GTB managing its own waste is a step in the right direction for food sovereignty and sustainability. Diverting food waste from restaurants can save 100,000’s of pounds of produce from being landfilled annually! Thats a lot of extra trash no longer hauled awatu!

- Meat Chickens: Hosting a poultry flock (chickens raised for meat) in Peshawbestown to feed GTB restaurant food waste to. The chickens can then be harvested and sold back to GTB restaurant outlets.

- 2020 Sugar Shack. The Natural Resource Department (NRD) in years past has done a fabulous job initiating the tribally operated sugar shack.

In 2020, the Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Dept will be collaborating with NRD to make the syrup flow. This program will be passed off to the Ag. Dept in subsequent years.

477 Program Trainee: Delora Wilson The GTB Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Department was very fortunate in its inaugural year to work closely with the GTB Human Resource Department to offer farm training positions to tribal members. When we were looking at offering these positions, we could not have foreseen how lucky we would be by receiving the help from GTB member Delora, “D”, Wilson. D has been involved with gardening on GTB lands for a few years now and was looking for more ways to become involved with agricultural programming. In June, she was brought on as the 1st 477 trainee to serve and learn as part of the GTB Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Dept. She has been instrumental in the planting, maintenance and harvest of nearly all of our annual crops this season. She has learned a great deal about the production of food, food distribution, soil management, tractor operation and much more. We are please to have had D as a 477 trainee. She will be sorely missed as her 477 trainee position comes to a close. 477 will offer opportunities to become involved with GTB agricultural programming, and if you are interested in participating please contact the GTB Human Resource Dept. Thank you for all your hard work D, you have helped to make this new program successful in its 1st year! Megwetch!
