The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians held its 2% allocation on January 30th at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. The distribution of $854,574.38 of gaming revenue allocation was awarded to local units of government. The dollars have been allocated for 60 local applicants as part of the Tribe’s “2 percent allocation,” which takes place twice per year. Since the 2 percent allocation began in 1994, the Grand Traverse Band has allocated $41,049,342.47 to local organizations as a way to give back to the community and support local education public safety and health facilities.

Aanii Boozhoo GTB Membership! March is upon us and it looks like another busy month filled with exciting things ahead! Are you enjoying the beautiful Winter we have had so far? On March 19th Spring will begin, and I don’t want to disappoint you but there might be a snow storm or two left before we’re in the clear. It’s been a pretty mild Winter, so I’ll happily take what we’ve been given any day, don’t you think?

The EDC Board is looking into buying a 16-unit apartment complex located in Traverse City. Once our due diligence is completed, we will have more information. We know all too well that Traverse City is a very expensive place to live. I will keep you updated.

The Pugsley property is being looked at to acquire by the Grand Traverse Economic Development (GTED) LLC, which is owned and operated by the Grand Traverse Band. The Tribe has a letter of support to host a Command and Control Center associated with the planned Mid-America Spaceport.

We are looking forward to working with Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association (MAMA) in this Satellite Launch Facilities Initiatives (SLFI). If this collaboration develops into a stronger relationship with our Tribe, it will give us a great opportunity to bring more high-tech jobs to this region and possibilities for our Tribal members and veterans, more information will follow.

William Hill, a sports betting vendor, released an announcement for their partnership with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. Please see press release announcement further in this newsletter. This is very exciting for GTB! We are working on a new sign as you enter Peshawbestown.

The new sign will welcome everyone to Leelanau Sands Casino and the GTB Reservation Community. We look forward to unveiling it to you!

On February 19th & 20th, we met in Lansing at the Radisson Hotel for the United Tribes of Michigan (UTM) meeting. The UTM group met with state liaisons and with Senator Gary Peters. There are 12 Tribes in Michigan that generally attend to discuss current issues that concern our membership/ citizens.

On February 26th & 27th, we met in Lansing with five other Michigan Tribes who make up the CORA group. Due to confidentiality, I am unable to offer details; however, please know discussions are ongoing on the 2020 Consent Decree Negotiations.

Coming up is a Michigan Meeting & Events - Best of 2020!

We are one of the finalists for the award celebration to be held on Thursday, May 28th at the Gem Theatre in Detroit.

The two categories GTB is nominated for are (1) Best Casino in Michigan- Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel and (2) Best Resort Lodge in Michigan- Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. Go GTB! We’ve been working with the Traverse City Pit Spitters inviting Governor Gretchen Whitmer to throw out the first pitch at the first home game on May 28th at the Turtle Creek Stadium!

I will reach my 70th birthday this month and I used to think that 70 is really old, but not anymore. I would like to wish all those celebrating a birthday a real big (Chi) Happy Birthday!

There have been a lot of milestones in my life and my wife (Joyce) and family are one of my biggest milestones. I am ever grateful for them and thank God for all my blessings.

Truly the Lord has been good to me all these years.

Don’t forget to move your clocks forward 1 hour at midnight on March 8th for Daylight Saving Time. For all of you who boycotted the time change last year, you will be in step when this happens and won’t have to move your clock, right Councilor Jane Rohl?!

In closing, I would like to share something with you I came across while reading. Most people would be upset if they were called a silly person. But the word “silly” comes from the oldEnglish word “selig” and its literal definition is “to be blessed, happy, healthy, and prosperous.” This is what I dream for GTB. It’s been said that the right mental attitude is extremely important in everything we do in life. This is especially true if you’re going to build winning relationships at home and/or at work. People enjoy being around those who are cheerful, optimistic, and generally excited about life.

However, there are a few people who enjoy being around prophets of doom. People of doom are never happy, and they never build because they are always tearing down. I have a great idea, let’s be “silly”.

Ahnee GTB Tribal Members & GTB Employees:

Through grants and long-term guaranteed loan financing, the Grand Traverse Band Government is evaluating & assessing developing a plan for a NEW Administration Building. There have been comprehensive studies completed on the oldest to newest buildings in Peshawbestown that have served us well but many are costing the Tribe a lot of money.

One of the main issues is that we have 17 buildings that require cleaning, maintenance, seasonal work, and capital expenditures.

Currently our costs per square foot to manage all of this plus our outlying county buildings is very high, the annual budget for space costs for several years ranges from $2.2 to $2.7 million.

We would appreciate hearing from GTB Tribal membership and employees through a survey of what you would envision for a NEW GTB Administration Building. Leadership and managers have been discussing this for several years and themselves envision how much more efficient a one-stop shop building/facility would be for providing services to the GTB Membership. A few of the major questions that have come up are: where the NEW Administration building would be located, exactly what services would be housed there, and how do we ensure it fits into our future growth and development.

Request for Great Lakes fishing history from GTB members !

In conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Judge Fox's historic decision (declaring that fishing rights in the Great Lakes were reserved by the Tribes that signed the Treaty of 1836) and the Grand Traverse Band's October, 1979 intervention in the "United States v.

Michigan" litigation, we are gathering information from GTB members about their families' history of fishing in the Great Lakes prior to the federal court's 1979 ruling. All persons with money judgments in the Tribal Court have a right to obtain a copy of their FullCourt Ledger. Money judgments in the Tribal Court may be from cases originating in the Tribal Court or from foreign court judgments. Money judgments may result in capture of Per Capita distributions. If you have any questions or a copy of your FullCourt Ledger, please contact the Tribal Court at 231-534-7050.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians now asserts Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction as outlined in the 2013 Violence Against Women Act. This law recognizes tribes’ inherent power to exercise “special domestic violence criminal jurisdiction” (SDVCJ) over certain offenders, regardless of their Native or non-Native status. All individuals with sufficient ties to the Tribe who commit acts of domestic violence, dating violence, or who violate a protection order against a Tribal Member on Tribal Lands, may be subject to prosecution in Tribal Court. This jurisdiction went into effect on October 31, 2018.

The Tribe will provide non-Native defendants with due process protections equal to those in the outside states, such as the right to a jury trial, the right to an attorney, the right to a law trained judge, and the right to petition for a writ of habeas corpus in a court of the United States. Employees of the Grand Traverse Band and any adult living in Tribal housing may be called to sit on a jury for a trial under this law.

programming for the Elder Support Services (formerly Elder Emergency). An elder requesting for funds not used from October 2018 to August 30, 2020 will need to place their request in before September 30, 2020. Funds will not be carried over to the following year to FY2021 (i.e., October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021). Please plan accordingly.

EXCITING NEWS! Tribal Council has approved an increase dollar amount available to each elder the “Elders Emergency Service Component” for FY19. within the six-county service area and there are no income requirement.

The funding for this service are categorized on your age ranging from $600 to $1000.

Age Category • 55-64 years • 65-70 years • 71-older

This program is for all elders living

and amounts: $600 $800 $1000

The Elders Emergency Service program is to assist elder’s and is not limited to any situation.

Examples: Food, Heating, cooling, snow removal @ $25/per trip and lawn care up to $25 per cut, appliance purchase, clothing, even reimbursement for payments that you incurred This program can be used in conjunction with LIHEAP and/or HUMAN SERVICES. Each Elder is required to complete an application. In order for the application to be processed in a timely manner, it is important that the directions for this program be followed and completed properly.

Procedures for program are as follows: • Application must be filled out completely, signed and dated by the applicant.

• Supporting documentation must be submitted with application • Assistance request must be for primary residence.

• Utility vendors that give a lock in rate must be documented by the vendor • Reimbursement- Is allowed -show proof of payment. o Can’t reimburse when paid by another GTB program or Agency • No income guidelines and is open to all elders living in the service area This is an exciting service made available again for you and we are pleased to service you. N aabdin G ii z i s / ( S n ow Cr u st M oon) GRAND TRAVERSE BAND OF OTTAWA AND CHIPPEWA INDIANS TITLE VI PART C CAREGIVER SUPPORT PROGRAM PROCEDURES Purpose: It will be the purpose of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Title VI Part C Caregiver Support Program to offer support services to all eligible Native American Caregivers, Grandparents or older relative residing in the service area as well as respite care when program funds are available.

The Caregiver Support Program provides a comprehensive referral and service system for caregivers. This is for families/ individuals who are caregivers to elders who are chronically ill or who has a life altering physical, mental or developmental disability, and for grandparents or older individuals who is the primary caregiver for a child or a relative of a child by blood, marriage, or adoption, or raising the child informally and who is 55 years of age or older and lives with the child. Services available include information about services, caregiver training, support groups, counseling, assistance to caregivers in gaining services, and respite services to compliment care provided by caregivers. This is not an exclusive list.

PROCEDURES: Eligibility 1. Priority; Caregivers who are older individual with the greatest social and economic need, Older individuals with the greatest economic need particularly of low-income individuals, Grandparent/Older individuals providing care to individuals with severe disabilities, including raising children/children with disabilities, and to Family caregivers who provide care to older individuals with the greatest social and economic needs.

2. Care Recipient (i.e., the person whom the caregiver is providing care) 55 years or older must reside within the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Service area and be a federally recognized tribal member.

3. Care Recipient under 18 must reside with the grandparent/ older individual in the Grand Traverse Band of Indians Tribal Services area.

4. Caregiver (i.e., the person providing care to the care recipient) must be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe and reside within the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Service Area. Also meet one of the following: • Caregivers are Native Americans who are 55 years and older, who provide care and support services to the care recipient that are 55 years and older who, for reason of illness or frailty; • Caregivers are Native Americans who are under 54 years and age, who provide care and support services to the care recipient who is 55 years and older, for reason of illness or frailty or to an individual with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder with neurological and organic brain dysfunction; or • Grandparents/Older individual (55) years or older, who are primary caregivers for and/or child or a relative of a child by blood, marriage, or adoption, or raising a child informally under 18 years of age and whom cannot function independently.

5. The Care Recipient 55 years or older must need assistance with at least two of the criteria of Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) that includes eating, dressing, bathing, transferring, toileting, walking, shopping, doing laundry, managing money, taking medication, and require supervision due to Alzheimer’s or other Dementia.

6. The Care Recipient 55 years or older with two of the Activities of Daily Living cannot be a caregiver when being cared by a caregiver through the GTB Caregiver program.

This is due to prevent and eliminate stress upon the care

recipient and to prevent fraudulent activity.

7. Respite Care provides the caregiver with “time off” from their care giving duties where the caregiver chooses his/her own respite worker. Respite care range from a few hours a day to a week or more. The respite place and the length of time depends on the needs of the family and the available resources. Respite Service Agreement and Responsibilities and a conduct of a complete background will be required before services are rendered.

8. The Respite Provider must be age 18 or older.

9. Respite Providers/Caregivers are not considered employees of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians but are temporary program participants receiving services.

10. Family members or other who show proof that Caregivers/ Respite Providers are not taking proper care of the Care receiver will be immediately terminated.

11. Elder Site Coordinator are ineligible to receive respite support for elders during working hours.

The Tribal Caregiver Support Program provides: 1. Respite Assistance 2. Opportunity for the Caregiver to access assistance services.

3. Caregiver Training 4. Caregiver and/or Grandparents/older individuals Support and Support Groups 5. Resource assistance information will be collected and provided to the Tribal Caregiver clients who are in the Tribal Programs service area.

6. Contracting for services from local health care agencies for: Caregiver training, forming caregiver support groups, and basic caregiver coping skills.

7. Background checks on Respite Providers; Caregivers/ Respite providers are responsible for submitting documents to conduct a background check.

The Tribal Caregiver Support Program does not provide: 1. Mediation for family conflicts. Tribal Caregiver Support Program is to remain impartial.

Forty years ago, a group of our people obtained federal recognition to establish a government for us to ensure a continuation of our people.

Our former leadership did not forget the history and plight of our ancestors; they were conscientious and mindful of the past, present, and future. I believe this was the mentality that guided our past leaders to achieve federal recognition and positive nation-building. Having been elected to my first term in May of 2004, I have served the membership by having this same outlook and perspective.

I am David Michael Arroyo. It is an absolute honor and privilege to serve and represent the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians membership. At the present time, we must set aside our personal differences and avoid distracting politics. Hi, I'm Cindi John. I am Ruby Ogemagegedo's daughter and Ed John's wife. I am half Odawa and half Irish. I grew up here since 1970 and got to see our Northport and Peshawbestown communities go from no running water pre federal recognition to where we are now and all the accomplishments our Tribe has achieved. I have fished with my husband since the mideighties and witnessed the impact and importance of tribal fishing for our Tribe.

My other work history includes working for our Tribe in the Maintenance, Youth, Library Departments, Planning Department Secretary and Elders Home Care. I worked as the Title 7 Home School Coordinator for Northport Public School. My schooling includes Data Entry and Commercial Art at Northwestern Michigan College.

I am a fair and hardworking person who cares and loves our Community. With my knowledge of our history and needs I would work for a better relationship between our Tribal Government and our Members. I think this can happen through our Members being able to have knowledge, access and confidence in our Tribal services. Our community has a proud history and in our history are many stories of troubled times and many stories of working through those times. Here are some of the goals I would strive for if elected:

1. More clinic hours, locations and services to give our members better healthcare and an overall higher quality of life. I would advocate for a Health Board with a mission of growing our health services through sustainable development.

2. Safe, healthy homes for all members to live in comfort and dignity regardless of income level. I would work to establish a Housing Board to achieve this mission through development and partnerships.

3. More entrepreneurship and alternative income sources to catalyze our economy. I would work to establish a Commerce Commission to promote creativity and innovation in entrepreneurship and alternative income sources within our membership.

In my experience these boards work best with oversight from the Council, but with no Council members on them. Therefore, I would not take a seat on the EDC or LLC boards if elected, but would instead focus on the Tribe itself while giving boards of experts in each area maximum support and autonomy.

I am Jane Rohl, granddaughter of Margaret South bird and Clarence Russell. Aanii GTB Members, My name is Kimberly Vargo. I am running for reelection for Tribal Council. I previously worked under Tribal Council for four years as Executive Assistant. I currently serve as Vice Chair on Tribal Council and hope to continue to serve our Membership. I have a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Saginaw Valley State University. I have been blessed to come home and use my education to work for our Community.

In my four-year tenure, our Tribe has made very large strides in the right direction. This took effective thinking and much strategy.

With this mindset, I was able to assist our gaming properties with increased revenue while stopping the financial bleeding that has been ongoing for years. I helped acquire new affordable housing and approved moving forward on workforce housing to try and meet this ever-increasing demand.

Lastly, our Government budget was in much crisis when I first started. Through effective planning and improved efficiencies, we are now experiencing a budget surplus of over $400,000 all while increasing services. We need continued forward movement to secure our future. Vote for Vargo 2020!

Grand Traverse Economic Development (GTED) is the commercial investment and holding company owned by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. GTED is working on a plan to partner with North Bay Capital on the redevelopment of the prior Camp Pugsley site to establish the Grand Traverse Science & Technology Innovation Center (GT STIC). This will create new jobs and training opportunities for Tribe members, Veterans and others at the site.

North Bay has worked with the State Land Bank to acquire the rights to purchase the Pugsley property. GTED has a long-term vision for development of the property that include a wide range of uses that we will discuss in more detail as contracts and plans are finalized.

However, I can say that some of those potential uses and future planned GT STIC Industrial Park tenants include GTED’s subsidiary Bay Shore Steel Works (BSSW) manufacturing services expansion, ATLAS Space Operations Satellite Communications site, STEM and Industrial Trades Training, potential data center tenants, supplies & equipment distribution facilities, and much more including a potential MI Satellite Launch Facilities Initiative (SLFI) Command and Control (C2) Center.

The future potential Michigan SLFI C2 Center is just a part of the overall Michigan Space Industry growth plan activities being led by the Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association (MAMA) Executive Director Mr. Gavin Brown. Mr. Brown is working closely with the State Government, Michigan Aerospace Manufacturing member companies such as BSSW; Satellites, Telecom and

Space Industry support services companies such as TERRAPORT Technologies working closely with ATLAS Space Operations; GTEC – Grand Traverse Engineering & Construction, GTED, and many others around the State and across the Country.

Earlier this week, it was announced at the State Capital, the selection of the potential future site for the Michigan Horizontal Satellite Launch Facility. GTED wants to be clear that the GT STIC industrial park plans do not involve any sort of rocket launches on site or in our area as some have speculated. The planned GT STIC Industrial Park will only potentially host a Michigan SLFI Command and Control Center if selected following a round of feasibility studies to be submitted to MAMA and others for evaluation.

GTED is excited to partner with North Bay Capital and the State Land Bank for the potential redevelopment of Camp Pugsley. We will be happy to discuss the project and our plans in much more detail once contracts have been completely finalized.

Coronavirus cases continue to be confirmed in the United States. By following some basic steps, you can reduce your risk, and do your part to protect others. The coronavirus continues to spread in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, with more than a 100 cases and 6 deaths confirmed in the United States at the time of writing.

Health experts have been warning that the virus’s spread is inevitable. That means its time to prepare your home and family. Below are some steps that the GTB Health Department has taken and what you can do as well: GTB HEALTH DEPARTMENT: • Medical Staff are alert for patients who meet the current persons under investigation (PUI) definition. The GTB Health Department, in consultation with local health departments, would determine whether a patient is a PUI for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The PUI criteria are subject to change as new information becomes available.

• Staff are vigilant of our current infection control policies and practices including: o Assessment and triage of patients with acute respiratory symptoms.  Signs have been posted with instructions to individuals with symptoms of respiratory infection to put on a face mask.  Facemasks are provided to coughing patients and other symptomatic individuals upon entry to the facility.  Alcohol based hand sanitizer for hand hygiene is available in common areas and entrances.  Facial tissues are provided along with no-touch disposal in waiting rooms and common areas.  A process is in place to rapidly triage and isolate patients to an Airborne Infection Room. Symptomatic patients should call the main clinic number and speak with a nurse. The nurse would then advise the patient as to the proper entry to the clinic to avoid unnecessary exposure to others. o Implementing standard, contact, airborne precautions, including the use of eye protection. o Adhering to recommend hand hygiene practices. o Proper cleaning and disinfection of environmental surfaces and equipment in all patient areas, including exam rooms, waiting areas, transport vehicles. All transport vehicles used by GTB Health Department have been equipped with a kit including wipes, gloves, surgical masks, N95 respirator masks, and biohazard bags. o Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for those in direct contact with patients, including Community Health Representative staff. o Source control measures for patients (e.g. putting facemask on suspect patients).

• Staff know how to report a potential COVD-19 case to public health officials.

• Staff have been notified to stay at home, if ill.

• Staff know how to contact and receive information from local health departments and state agencies.

• Staff have plans under way to contact elders individually to identify critical needs and establish a follow-up plan as appropriate.

• The Community Health Representatives in the Benzie and Traverse City have been actively engaged and are serving as a contact for patients.

• Staff are participating regularly on Local Health Department and MDHHS calls regarding the COVID-19 and collaborating closely.

YOU: • Stay calm. While the coronavirus outbreak is a serious public health concern, the majority of those who contract the coronavirus do not become seriously ill and only a small percentage require intensive care. Everyday personal preventive actions can be implemented year-round, especially during flu season.

• Keep your hands clean and keep your distance from sick people. Wet your hands with clean running water and then lather them with soap; don’t miss the back of your hands, between your fingers, or under your nails. Make sure you scrub for at least 20 seconds. Alcohol based sanitizers also work, which should be rubbed in for 20 seconds, but the gel must contain 60% alcohol. The Centers for Disease Control recommends you avoid touching your mouth, eyes, nose with unwashed hands. Meanwhile, if someone else is showing flu or cold like symptoms, try to stay 6 feet away. Other smart things to do are to direct your sneeze or cough into your elbow so as to avoid germs on your hands which can then quickly spread to other surfaces. Also, greet others with elbow bumps and push elevator buttons with your knuckle instead of a fingertip.

• If you’re infected, masks can help prevent the spread of a virus. The most effective are the so-called N95 masks, which block 95% of very small particles. Masks primarily prevent a person from giving the disease to someone else.

Health officials around the world have been imploring the public to stop buying masks if they are healthy or not caring for someone who is ill. Healthcare professionals need a large supply of masks because they are in direct contact with infected patients and must change masks. Not having a mask does not necessarily put you at any increased risk of contracting the disease. This message has not stopped people from buying the masks, which are usually inexpensive and cost pennies to make. Recently on Amazon, sellers have been advertising masks for at least $10 each. One seller advertised 160 masks for $800.

• Stock up on home supplies, medicine, and resources.

Experts suggest stocking at least a 30 day supply of needed prescriptions, household items like food staples, laundry detergent, diapers if you have small children.

• Prepare your family and communicate your plan. Make sure every member of the family is up-to-date on any and all emergency plans. Be sure to be in communication with your child’s school on what types of plans are established for any sort of schedule change, early dismissal, or online instruction. And if you have elderly parents or relatives, or family members with any special concerns, make sure you have a plan for caring for them if they get sick.

• With your children, get the flu shot. The good news is that coronavirus cases in children have been rare. Protect your child by taking the same precautions you would during cold and flu season: encourage frequent hand washing, move away from people who are coughing or sneezing, and get the flu shot. Experts recommend getting the flu vaccine, noting that vaccinating children is the best protection for older people against bacterial pneumonia.

As the United States recorded its sixth coronavirus death recently and other cases have popped up without known risk on the West Coast, I am sure there is a question as to how it compares to a more familiar foe: influenza.

• The coronavirus is more deadly than the flu so far. On average, seasonal flu strains kill about 0.1 percent of people who become infected. The 1918 flu had an unusually high

N aabdin G ii z i s / ( S n ow Cr u st M oon) fatality rate, around 2 percent. Early estimates of the coronavirus death rate from Wuhan, China have been about 2 percent. A new report published in the New England Journal of Medicine found a lower rate of 1.4 percent.

• So far, the coronavirus seems to be more contagious than most strains of flu. Each person with the coronavirus seems to infect 2.2 other people on average. By comparison, the flu is roughly 1.3 other people.

• Both the coronavirus and influenza are most dangerous to people who are older than 65, or have chronic illnesses, or a weak immune system. There is one important difference.

The flu appears far more dangerous to children, particularly very young ones, who can become severely ill.

• There is no approved antiviral drug for the coronavirus, though several are being tested. For the flu, however, there are four prescription medications. All work best if they are taken with a day or two of when symptoms start.

• An experimental vaccine for the coronavirus may be ready for testing in humans within a few months, but will take much longer, at least a year or two, to become available for widespread use. Flu vaccines, on the other hand, are widely available and generally 40 percent to 60 percent effective, which means they will reduce cases by that amount in a population that has been vaccinated, compared to one that has not.

TRIBAL MEMBERS MUST UPDATE DOCUMENTATION TO RECEIVE MINOR TRUST DISTRIBUTIONS

In 2019 the Tribal Manager solicited, reviewed, and presented to the Council nearly a dozen proposals by financial institutions to serve as GTB’s investment manager. While the process was underway, Huntington Bank notified GTB that it would be decommissioning its platform and implementing a new system of administering trusts. Facing a steep increase in fees, GTB expanded the request for services and performed extensive research and consultation. Based on its diligence, the Tribal Council selected PNC to take over as investment manager and Findley to serve as record keeper of the minor trusts. We are very excited about this relationship and the benefits it will provide to tribal members!

The transition is currently in full swing and we are working to minimize disruption. Huntington will mail December 31 account statements and thereafter will no longer service minor trusts accounts. Miigwetch to Huntington and to Stifel Nicolaus for their service and their dedication to a smooth transition. Beginning in January 2020, Findley will service minor trusts, including the processing of applications, distributions, and loans.

To avoid distribution delays and to ensure trust monies are securely transferred, Findley will need the following before it disburses any distributions from a minor trust account—even if the information was previously submitted to Huntington: All minor trust beneficiaries who are entitled to a distribution in 2020 will need to provide proof of a bank account for direct deposit before receiving their next distribution from PNC/Findley.

• Members who previously received a distribution must: o Submit to Findley a Direct Deposit Authorization Form (available from OMB) o Provide a photocopy of a government issued photo ID (Driver’s License, Tribal ID, Passport, or other photo identification) o Provide proof of their personal bank account in the form of either a voided check or a bank account verification letter. The name on the photo ID must match the name of the bank account holder.

• If your distribution is due in January or February of 2020, contact OMB to obtain a temporary Direct Deposit Authorization Form. A similar form will be mailed with an updated address and bar code after the Findley call center is activated in February.

For future beneficiaries, distribution forms will be mailed 60 to 90 days prior to their 19th birthday.

• Newly eligible members—those who are anticipating their first distribution—will need to provide all of the documentation above, plus a trust distribution form. Findley will accept a completed Huntington distribution form until Findley forms are mailed.

Finally, a call center will be active starting in February to answer tribal member questions and provide account and process-related information. Members with a minor trust will receive mail in January containing a phone number. Until the call center goes live, please contact Maxx Jacko at (231) 5347622 for questions related to distributions and Eric Placer at (231) 534-7079 for questions related to minor trust loans.

Update on Lifelong Learning (LLL) As of November, the LLL sub department has combined two programs youth services and youth intervention staff as one program with the current staff as LLL Youth Intervention. The goal is to have one program that service educational programming, youth program and family program from ages zero through seventeen. With this offers an opportunity for the Tribal Youth Enrichment Program (TYEP) for GTB minor from age 0 through 17 years old residing within six county service area. This program is to offer a unique approach to meet the youth needs to access funds to assist with the cost of their choice. Youth’s parent/guardian may request funding for a variety of purposes that may include but are not limited to cultural, educational, sport and summer camp fees, music and dance lessons, class trips, or other appropriate need. The desire outcome is to give the youth the opportunity to a participate in activities that will enhance and support selfdevelopment. In addition, encouraging healthy involvement of acceptable healthy activities. The funds available for each youth until September 30, 2020 is set by age group. The funds may be split between one or more requests.

How to request access to the TYEP funds?

Program Requirements/Procedures • Youth must be a GTB Tribal Member and residing within sixcounty service area.

• Youth must be between the ages of 0 through 17 years old at

time of the request.

• Parent/Guardian must complete a Tribal Youth Enrichment Program form (This form is available with LLL Youth Intervention program staff).

• Parent/Guardian must provide proof of legal custody of youth.

• Must attach documentation to support request (Receipts, Flyer, Budget, etc).

• Once request received with appropriate documentation, please allow 2 weeks for processing.

Missing documentation could delay processing.

• Funds will be determined if payment can be made to the vendor, a Parent/Guardian or reimbursement with receipt.

• Reimbursement- Receipts must be legible with date and within current fiscal year, proof of payment is required.

• If it is determined that funds can be distributed to a parent/ guardian, it is required that receipts must be turn into the program within two weeks from the first start date of the activity.

• Parent/Guardian must complete an agreement form.

• Failure to provide receipts renders the Parent/Guardian ineligible to obtain any financial requests from this program for the entirety of the current fiscal year.

Maple Syrup and Climate Change

We all have heard the term Climate Change, but you may wonder what exactly does that mean or how does that affect our region? The NRD Environmental Services Program is looking to host a community presentation on what climate change is and how it is affecting our Cultural activities.

This presentation is in the early stages of development and more information on logistics are to come. One goal for this presentation is to open a discussion on the potential northern migration of the Sugar Maple trees due to Climate Change.

We would like to hear from our Tribal Members how or if their process of making Maple Syrup has changed over the years.

Syrup Season at NRD

NRD will be starting the process for producing Maple Syrup at the Sugar Shack next to the Putnam Rd NRD Storage Building. We are anticipating the season starting by March 3rd.

NRD helpers will be tapping trees, collecting and condensing sap, and then bottling the creation. Please stop by if you would like to learn about this process and how you can get involved!

Clean up pet waste to help water quality.

With Northern Michigan in the grips of winter few people are thinking about pet waste.

This time of year, mother nature does a good job of covering up where Fido does his business in the yard or on a walk.

Eventually winter comes to an end and all of Fido’s piles start to be exposed, break down, and eventually run into local water bodies.

Along with contributing to E. coli levels in lakes, streams, and wetlands, pet waste can also contain Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Salmonella, along with various other worms and parasites.

Waste can also increase the nutrient load on a water body can deplete dissolved oxygen and cause harmful algae blooms.

Here are some steps you can take to ensure your pet’s waste doesn’t contribute to poor water quality: • If you walk your dog carry bags with you to clean up after your dog does his or her business. Many stores carry ecofriendly bags for cleaning up after pets.

• Dispose of waste in the trash.

• Remind others to clean up after their pets.
