On Saturday Nov. 9th, St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church held the Veterans Feast and Raffle in Peshawbestown. This event was hosted by the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion Eagle Town Post #120. GTB Gov. Officials, members of Tribal Council and many GTB Citizens came to show their respect to the sacrifice of Veterans and service members alike. More info and photos on Page 16.

Turtle Creek GM receives National Indian Gaming Association Chairman’s Leadership Award Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel’s General Manager, Johnny Barrientoz, received a coveted Chairman’s Leadership Award from Ernest L. Stevens Jr., Chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association at the recent Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Barrientoz was recognized among thousands in the casino industry field in a Statement by Chairman Stevens, “The Indian gaming industry has seen such phenomenal strides throughout the years. Today, we are the experts, and Johnny Barrientoz is one of the truest examples of that.”

“I am sincerely grateful and humbled to receive such a coveted award, especially from someone I have always respected and admired,” Stated Barrientoz.

Barrientoz started in the GTB Government Youth Program and transferred to the gaming operations side in 2005 as a front-line Slot Attendant. Barrientoz quickly advanced to Slot Department Supervisor, Slot Department Manager, and Director of Slots for both Leelanau Sands and Turtle Creek casinos.

After receiving his certification in gaming management through the University of Nevada, Barrientoz was promoted to General Manager of Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel on January 15, 2019.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Here we are in the last month of 2019 – where does the time go?! December is such a beautiful yet busy month for us. The snow is coming (again) and that means it’s time to get out the sleds, toboggans, skis, and ice skates! Don’t forget to bundle up in heavy clothing for the cold winter months ahead to stay safe and warm. I look forward to all the celebrations with family, friends, and shopping for those special gifts this holiday season. Let us not forget the real reason for the season and that is the story of a baby boy named Jesus born in Bethlehem. There was no room at the Inn, so his mother Mary and father Joseph welcomed his birth in a humble manger. As the story goes, baby Jesus came to die so that you and I might live. My prayer and hope is that you will find Him and make room for Him in your heart and life. I speak this blessing over you and your family believing you are the apple of God’s eye, highly favored, richly blessed, completely forgiven, 100% righteous, and He is with us forever.

The GTB government is responsible for many areas of concentration that require maintenance of confidential information of Tribal members and often times their families.

The Council has made it a priority with the Tribal Manager to ensure that there is an emphasis of professionalism with the maintenance of any confidential information, whether it is in paper files, electronic files, or in our storage areas.

Due to recent concerns of confidential information showing up on social media, the Tribal Manager presented the need for a process clearinghouse for all areas of the Tribe that collects such information. The clearinghouse will identify the information collected, what information is confidential, how it is stored, and what positions can access this information.

There is a heightened awareness that our Tribal members deserve to have quality accountability and absolute assurance that confidential information stays that way: CONFIDENTIAL. On Thursday October 31, 2019 the 12 Tribal leaders of Michigan met with Governor Whitmer to bring our concerns and issues forth. There were five (5) things that I brought to her attention in regard to GTB: (1) I expressed gratitude for the Proclamation declaring Michigan Indigenous Peoples Day on the 14th of October 2019. Governor Whitmer mentioned in the Proclamation that Grand Traverse Band had already passed a Resolution officially recognizing the day on the second Monday in October for our Tribe. (2) Gratitude for the Michigan Kids and Farms pilot program, which provides meals for as little as 10 cents to qualifying families. (3) The Gaming Law was passed and would keep the Tribes at the forefront. (4) I reiterated the GTB opposition to Pipeline 5 and opposition to the tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac. (5) I invited Gov. Whitmer to our 40-year re-acknowledgement as a Sovereign Nation celebration which will take place May 2020! I also invited her to stay at our Grand Traverse Resort and Spa property any time she’s in Traverse City area. It would be an honor for GTB to have our Michigan Governor as our guest to any of our properties.

Jack Bergman, Denton Firm, and Anderson Group, regarding the stalled application in Washington, DC for our Parcel 88 Project, in Acme Township. GTB owns approximately 160 acres across from the Meijer store in Acme Township that we are trying to get into Trust status for future economic development, jobs, and affordable housing. We haven’t heard anything yet and I am not holding my breath on this one, but I will report out when we hear back. The following is not something I made up; rather, it came from our Legal Department and I agree with this vitally important statement.

I urge the Officials in Washington, DC that they remember to ensure all agencies permitting projects or authorizations allowing states to assume permitting authority of tribal lands, waters, and sacred places, to demonstrate compliance with Federal trust obligations, treaties, and consultation requirements, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and all other statutory responsibilities of Federal agencies in these matters.

My hope is that you are very proud of our Tribal Nation and our spirit of resiliency. We’ve been knocked down before, but we continue to rise to celebrate and exercise our sovereign and treaty rights daily. Miigwetch, Miigwetch, Miigwetch, Miigwetch Tribal members and take a bow as you’ve earned it.

I also wish you a Happy New Year and may the incoming year be your best yet! Don’t forget our motto for the year “Working Together” as we continue to work diligently in the best interest of GTB.

Update to Elder Program

Chairman McClellan, with the 12 Tribal leaders of Michigan, at the signing of the new Executive Directive on Tribal Relations with Governor Whitmer on Oct. 31st.

The Elder program has updated its procedure for programming for the Elder Support Services (formerly Elder Emergency). An elder requesting for funds not used from October 2018 to August 30, 2020 will need to place their request in before September 30, 2020. Funds will not be carried over to the following year to FY2021 (i.e., October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021). Please plan accordingly.

The term "applicant(s)" under these criteria mean the person(s) that are over the age of 18 and will be occupying the apartment home. The term "occupant(s)" in these criteria means the person(s) that are under the age of 18 that will be occupying the apartment home.

These rents do not include utilities. Those would be the responsibility of the tenant.

No application or holding fees. Pet deposit will be $100 Proposed Eligibility Criteria: A total household income of $ $27,216 will be required for a 1-bedroom unit A total household income of $32,472 will be required for a 2-bedroom unit Background requirements for our Market Rentals are proposed to be: 1. Occupancy Guidelines Lease signers must be at least 18 years of age.

Our properties allow up to the following number of occupants per unit. One bedroom units - three persons; Two bedroom units -five persons; Three bedroom units -seven persons.

Any person over the age of 18, must qualify as a new resident and be placed on the lease. The addition of a Resident to the residential lease agreement that results in exceeding the Occupancy Guidelines will not be allowed.

Identification A copy of both the state issued ID(s) and social security card will be required upon application for residency.

Application for Residency An Application for Residency must be completed and maintained for each person over the age of 18.

Qualifying Standards • Rental History: Up to 36 months of rental history may be verified on present and previous residences. A positive record of prompt monthly payment, sufficient notice, with no damages is expected. For applicants who are homeowners, permission must be granted to verify payment history with bank or lending institution.

If there is an eviction or balance due to any apartment community or private owner reflective on the credit report, it must be at least 3 years old, and positive rental history must be established in the interim.

• Credit History: An unsatisfactory credit report can disqualify an applicant from renting an apartment home.

An unsatisfactory report is one which reflects past or current bad debts, late payments or unpaid bills, liens, judgments, foreclosures or bankruptcies. If the applicant is rejected for poor credit history the applicant may contact the reporting agency that provided the credit report. An applicant rejected for the unsatisfactory credit is encouraged to obtain a copy of the credit report from the agency and correct any erroneous information that may be on the report.

Through grants and long-term guaranteed loan financing, the Grand Traverse Band Government is evaluating & assessing developing a plan for a NEW Administration Building. There have been comprehensive studies completed on the oldest to newest buildings in Peshawbestown that have served us well but many are costing the Tribe a lot of money.

One of the main issues is that we have 17 buildings that require cleaning, maintenance, seasonal work, and capital expenditures.

Currently our costs per square foot to manage all of this plus our outlying county buildings is very high, the annual budget for space costs for several years ranges from $2.2 to $2.7 million.

EXCITING NEWS! Tribal Council has approved an increase dollar amount available to each elder the “Elders Emergency Service Component” for FY19. This program is for all elders living within the six-county service area and there are no income requirement.

The funding for this service are categorized on your age ranging from $600 to $1000.

Age Category and amounts: • 55-64 years $600 • 65-70 years $800 • 71-older $1000 The Elders Emergency Service program is to assist elder’s and is not limited to any situation.

Examples: Food, Heating, cooling, snow removal @ $25/per trip and lawn care up to $25 per cut, appliance purchase, clothing, even reimbursement for payments that you incurred This program can be used in conjunction with LIHEAP and/or HUMAN SERVICES. Each Elder is required to complete an application. In order for the application to be processed in a timely manner, it is important that the directions for this program be followed and completed properly.

Procedures for program are as follows: • Application must be filled out completely, signed and dated by the applicant.

• Supporting documentation must be submitted with application • Assistance request must be for primary residence.

• Utility vendors that give a lock in rate must be documented by the vendor • Reimbursement- Is allowed -show proof of payment. o Can’t reimburse when paid by another GTB program or Agency • No income guidelines and is open to all elders living in the service area This is an exciting service made available again for you and we are pleased to service you. M n i do o G i i s o o n h s / ( L itt l e S pirit M oon) GRAND TRAVERSE BAND OF OTTAWA AND CHIPPEWA INDIANS TITLE VI PART C CAREGIVER SUPPORT PROGRAM PROCEDURES Purpose: It will be the purpose of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Title VI Part C Caregiver Support Program to offer support services to all eligible Native American Caregivers, Grandparents or older relative residing in the service area as well as respite care when program funds are available.

The Caregiver Support Program provides a comprehensive referral and service system for caregivers. This is for families/ individuals who are caregivers to elders who are chronically ill or who has a life altering physical, mental or developmental disability, and for grandparents or older individuals who is the primary caregiver for a child or a relative of a child by blood, marriage, or adoption, or raising the child informally and who is 55 years of age or older and lives with the child. Services available include information about services, caregiver training, support groups, counseling, assistance to caregivers in gaining services, and respite services to compliment care provided by caregivers. This is not an exclusive list.

PROCEDURES: Eligibility 1. Priority; Caregivers who are older individual with the greatest social and economic need, Older individuals with the greatest economic need particularly of low-income individuals, Grandparent/Older individuals providing care to individuals with severe disabilities, including raising children/children with disabilities, and to Family caregivers who provide care to older individuals with the greatest social and economic needs.

2. Care Recipient (i.e., the person whom the caregiver is providing care) 55 years or older must reside within the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Service area and be a federally recognized tribal member.

3. Care Recipient under 18 must reside with the grandparent/ older individual in the Grand Traverse Band of Indians Tribal Services area.

4. Caregiver (i.e., the person providing care to the care recipient) must be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe and reside within the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal Service Area. Also meet one of the following: • Caregivers are Native Americans who are 55 years and older, who provide care and support services to the care recipient that are 55 years and older who, for reason of illness or frailty; • Caregivers are Native Americans who are under 54 years and age, who provide care and support services to the care recipient who is 55 years and older, for reason of illness or frailty or to an individual with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder with neurological and organic brain dysfunction; or • Grandparents/Older individual (55) years or older, who are primary caregivers for and/or child or a relative of a child by blood, marriage, or adoption, or raising a child informally under 18 years of age and whom cannot function independently.

5. The Care Recipient 55 years or older must need assistance with at least two of the criteria of Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) that includes eating, dressing, bathing, transferring, toileting, walking, shopping, doing laundry, managing money, taking medication, and require supervision due to Alzheimer’s or other Dementia.

6. The Care Recipient 55 years or older with two of the Activities of Daily Living cannot be a caregiver when being cared by a caregiver through the GTB Caregiver program.

This is due to prevent and eliminate stress upon the care

recipient and to prevent fraudulent activity.

7. Respite Care provides the caregiver with “time off” from their care giving duties where the caregiver chooses his/her own respite worker. Respite care range from a few hours a day to a week or more. The respite place and the length of time depends on the needs of the family and the available resources. Respite Service Agreement and Responsibilities and a conduct of a complete background will be required before services are rendered.

8. The Respite Provider must be age 18 or older.

9. Respite Providers/Caregivers are not considered employees of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians but are temporary program participants receiving services.

10. Family members or other who show proof that Caregivers/ Respite Providers are not taking proper care of the Care receiver will be immediately terminated.

11. Elder Site Coordinator are ineligible to receive respite support for elders during working hours.

The Tribal Caregiver Support Program provides: 1. Respite Assistance 2. Opportunity for the Caregiver to access assistance services.

3. Caregiver Training 4. Caregiver and/or Grandparents/older individuals Support and Support Groups 5. Resource assistance information will be collected and provided to the Tribal Caregiver clients who are in the Tribal Programs service area.

6. Contracting for services from local health care agencies for: Caregiver training, forming caregiver support groups, and basic caregiver coping skills.

7. Background checks on Respite Providers; Caregivers/ Respite providers are responsible for submitting documents to conduct a background check.

The Tribal Caregiver Support Program does not provide: 1. Mediation for family conflicts. Tribal Caregiver Support Program is to remain impartial.

GTB Veteran Events

Language Fall Symposium

Tribal citizens and Government programs celebrated Veteran Heroes with two extraordinary events just before the Veterans Day Holiday. The GTB Veterans POWWOW was held at the GTB Charlevoix Site Friday Nov. 8th. The event was in conjunction with the 2019 Fall Language Symposium. A potluck feast was held before Grand Entry. It was a good turnout this year as GTB members and guests gathered to honor veterans of all nations through drum and dance. Veteran representatives from every American armed conflict since the Korean war were in attendance. The Jiingtamok featured Dance Specials such as Men’s Grass Dance and Women’s Jingle Dress dance highlighting veteran sacrifice and service to our country.

The following morning, on Saturday Nov. 9th, the Veterans Feast and Raffle was held at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church in Peshawbestown.

This event was hosted by the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion Eagle Town Post #120. An honor ceremony was held along with food and prizes, such as Pendelton blankets and gift certificates.

These are our warriors and our nations heroes. It is such an honor to see the appreciation of our veterans by the Grand Traverse Band Tribal Government , as well as the camaraderie of its citizens and Auxiliary groups to come together and honor them. These brave men and woman, although serving decades apart , shared a cohesive bond in the love for each other and their country. While in the ranks, Native veterans remained resilient, often serving amongst discriminative superiors.

The sheer determination to want to fight under such unfairness further demonstrates their warrior spirit in the defense of their loved ones and our nations freedom. So many Veterans can feel the impact and appreciation of a community that respects them, such as GTB. - by Jared Sonderegger, Editor

The 2019 Anishinaabemowin Fall Symposium was held Friday through Sunday, Nov. 8th -10th, at the Charlevoix office. Several workshops and classes were available during the multiple day event.

The first day ending with the Veterans Powwow. Language specific Classes were given on subjects such as “Learning the sound of our language” and “Lets learn some action words” as well as personal development classes for Indigenous culture such as “How do we let go?” and “ Walking through grief”. These fantastic Language instructors always do a great job is guiding students in regaining their Anishinaabemowin Culture.

Norsemen Play State Championship

On Saturday, November 23rd, the Sutton’s Bay Norsemen played against the Colon Magi football team in at the NMU Superior Dome in Marquette MI. The game was filled with exciting plays from both teams. The fourth quarter in particular contained a clinching 92-yard touchdown by Colon Magi. The Norseman gave it their all and played with vicious determination. The final score was 26-14, a victory by Colon Magi in the Division 1 state final, eight-player game. Although they didn’t take the Championship this year, the Sutton’s Bay Norseman (having several GTB youth players) had a phenomenal season having gone 12-1. Even Making it to the State Championship is an accolade not many can attest to. The community showed their support and pride for the team on Friday, November 22nd as they had a send off by family, friends and faculty. We are all so proud of them. Our Athletes always display a stead fast determination in anything they set their minds to. We hope to hear of more athletic achievements in the future.

Northport school Cultural Celebration

GTB Students from the Northport Public School put together a cultural presentation for the students and staff on Wednesday, November 20th. The presentation was in celebration of Native American Heritage Month. RJ Smith and the boys drum group, Kchi Wiikwedong, helmed the drum exhibition and singing.

Many native students participated in dancing as an exhibit of cultural expression. The event was informative for all attendees as GTB youth and non native onlookers partook in

Update on Lifelong Learning (LLL)

As of November, the LLL sub department has combined two programs youth services and youth intervention staff as one program with the current staff as LLL Youth Intervention. The goal is to have one program that service educational programming, youth program and family program from ages zero through seventeen. With this offers an opportunity for the Tribal Youth Enrichment Program (TYEP) for GTB minor from age 0 through 17 years old residing within six county service area. This program is to offer a unique approach to meet the youth needs to access funds to assist with the cost of their choice. Youth’s parent/guardian may request funding for a variety of purposes that may include but are not limited to cultural, educational, sport and summer camp fees, music and dance lessons, class trips, or other appropriate need. The desire outcome is to give the youth the opportunity to a participate in activities that will enhance and support selfdevelopment. In addition, encouraging healthy involvement of acceptable healthy activities. The funds available for each youth until September 30, 2020 is set by age group. The funds may be split between one or more requests.

PUBLIC SAFETY UPDATES

- Submitted by Jolanda Murphy December 2019 Emergency Management Updates The month of October and November proved to be busy for emergency management response staff participating in training and exercises with local responders to test plans and skills.

The Emergency management personnel Emergency Management (EM) 1st Deputy, Nicki Basch, EM 2nd Deputy Jared Sonderegger and EM Jolanda Murphy attended the Basic Public Information Officer’s Workshop at Bellaire, MI October 29-30, 2019. The training provided information on the role of Public Information Officers and working effectively with the media before, during and after incidents. The training provided information on how to develop and disseminate information to the public using the cycle of communications (outreach, sharing emergency public information and analysis after incident) and drafting press releases to protect the health and safety of community with accurate and credible information to maintain a safe environment.

Workshop attendees acted out scenarios and conducted video taped news interviews to understand how to prepare for and conduct news interviews and the importance of nonverbal communications expressed while on camera. The training provided insight on challenges to coordinating emergency communications to the public with timely and accurate informaton to protect health, safety, and environment during emergency incidents.

GTB Family Health Clinic Closed Point of Dispensing (POD) Exercise The GTB Health Clinic participated in a Closed Point of Dispensing Exercise with Grand Traverse County, Benzie-Leelanau and Northwest Michigan Health Departments 11/7/2019 to test mass vaccination distribution if there were a large-scale health epidemic.

The exercise allowed the health clinic to practice activation of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) which happens during a declared state of emergency by the Governor. The clinic will coordinate with local health departments to request and receive antibiotics, vaccines, supplies, or other items needed to address health epidemic.

To prepare for the exercise, the local health departments collected canned goods to use as “vaccines” during the exercise. GTB Health Clinic role was to request “vaccines” through the local health departments to operate as a closed POD to distribute the vaccines.

The clinic coordinated with GTB Human Services to pick up the “vaccines” from Grand Traverse County Health Department who provided canned goods for distribution to food pantries. GTB Human Services received 50 boxes of canned goods which were given to the GTB Food Pantry for participating in the exercise.

For the exercise, the driver of the truck was required to show a photo ID for the local health department to release the “vaccine”, a formal process to ensure vaccines or antivirals are given to appropriate agencies for distribution.

GTB Caseworker Scott Scholten picked up the vaccine (canned goods) from Traverse City and transported back to GTB Health Clinic with 50 boxes of canned goods for the GTB Food Pantry. As part of the exercise, the dispensing paperwork was delivered to the GTB Family Clinic and RN, Mari Raphael signed for the vaccines (food). **GTB Emergency Management Office would like to thank the

participating health departments for exercising with GTB and providing canned goods for the GTB Food Pantry. These items will be distributed to community members.

GTB Spill Response Exercises November 6 and 8, 2019 the GTB Emergency Management Office and emergency responders conducted two Spill Response Plan exercises at Eagletown Market and Turtle Creek Market. Eagletown Market (ETM) exercise was held on a snowy day with ETM staff reviewing the spill plan and response procedures to control hazardous spills at the gas station and safeguard staff and visitors at the store.

TURTLE CREEK MARKET SPILL RESPONSE EXERCISE 11/8/2019 GTB Emergency Management personnel conducted the Turtle Creek Market (TCM) spill response exercise 11/8/2019 with our local partners, Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department and GTB and EDC personnel. This was an opportunity to review spill response procedures, identify evacuation routes, location of spill materials to stop a gas or other hazardous spill under 25 gallons and/or follow up on additional procedures to control larger incidents.

EDC C-Store Manager Ryan Ashley was on sight with Eric Depetro, Jolanda Murphy, TCM General Manager Janice Wilson and TCM staff and GTB Fire Chief Garrett Fairchild and Grand Traverse Metro Assistant Chief Steve Apostle and Lieutenant Adam Druewery, member of G.T. Metro Haz Mat Team.

In addition to the annual spill response exercise, Grand Traverse Metro Lieutenant Druewery brought in the Grand Traverse Haz Mat Trailer and provided a tour of the spill response materials used to control a spill or other hazardous situation.

GTB will continue to exercise and work with our partners to prepare for emergency situations to keep our community safe.

HEALTHY MICHIGAN PLAN CHANGES COMING IN 2020!

What are the new requirements?

Beginning January 1, 2020, under Public Act 208 of 2018, to keep Healthy Michigan Plan (HMP) coverage, some American Indian/ Alaska Native (AI/AN) beneficiaries will be required to work or complete other activities, such as a job search, for at least 80 hours per month. Beneficiaries must report work or other activities (through self-attestation) to MDHHS on a monthly basis.

Beneficiaries may also receive an exemption (reason to be excused) from these requirements. If a beneficiary fails to meet work requirements for three months in a calendar year, the beneficiary will lose eligibility. Coverage may be reinstated after the beneficiary comes into compliance after serving a penalty month of coverage.

What do I need to do?

• Please watch the mail. MDHHS has started mailing notifications to beneficiaries starting September 3, 2019. Please see sample letters at the end of the article. o Beneficiaries without an exemption were being notified by mail starting September 3, 2019. o Beneficiaries with an exemption are being notified that the requirements do not currently apply to The beneficiary needs to be aware of the requirements in case they ever lose their exemption and are subject to requirements. Letters are being sent by mail starting October 1, 2019. o Beneficiaries are be being notified where work requirements will not ever apply to them since they are 62 and older. Letters are being sent by mail starting October 1, 2019.

• Beneficiaries who are non-compliant with work requirements will serve a penalty month unless they report an exemption.

• Beneficiaries can re-enroll once they complete and report completion the completion of work or other activities.

• The beneficiary gets State of Michigan unemployment benefits.

• The beneficiary gets temporary or permanent disability payments from a private insurer or the government.

• The beneficiary has a medical condition that limits work, approved by a doctor.

• The beneficiary is caring for a dependent with a disability and doctor’s order for full-time care (One claim per household).

• The beneficiary is caring for a person who cannot make decisions for themselves.

• The beneficiary is medically frail due to one or more of the following: o Physical, mental, or emotional condition that limits a daily activity, like bathing o Physical, intellectual, or developmental disability that makes it hard to do daily living activity o Physical, mental, or emotional condition that needs to be checked often o Disability based on Social Security criteria (SSDI) o Chronic substance use disorder (SUD) o Serious and complex medical condition, or special medical needs o The beneficiary is in a nursing home, hospice, or gets home help services o The beneficiary is homeless o The beneficiary is a survivor of domestic violence o MDHHS will use data to assign the exemption based upon a retrospective data analysis:  ICD-10 diagnosis codes (over 350 codes) which includes serious and complex medical conditions, physical, intellectual, or developmental disability, etc.  Data that identifies that a beneficiary is in a nursing home, hospice or is receiving home help services o Beneficiaries may also report this exemption through:  Completing the Medicaid Application  Reporting the exemption in a similar way to other exemptions (through self-attestation) • The beneficiary has a good cause because the beneficiary or a close family member: o Has a serious illness; o Is hospitalized; or o Has a disability that meets the government definition.

• Individuals who are enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program are also exempt for work requirements.

• MDHHS will use data to assign this exemption to beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries cannot report this exemption.

• An exemption means that an HMP beneficiary may be excused from: o HMP work requirements and/or o Other HMP program requirements • Exemptions can last up to one year. Some exemptions can be renewed.

• Beneficiaries can tell MDHHS about an exemption (through self-attestation). MDHHS may also use internal data to identify beneficiaries who should be excused from the requirements.

• Once a beneficiary tells MDHHS about an exemption, MDHHS will send the beneficiary a letter with the date the exemption ends.

Reasons to be Excused • The beneficiary is pregnant or was pregnant in the last 2 months.

• The beneficiary is the main caretaker for a family member under 6 (One parent per household).

• The beneficiary is a full-time student.

• The beneficiary is under age 21 and was in Michigan foster care.

• The beneficiary was in prison or jail in the last 6 months.
