2018 Annual Impact Report

Message from the Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer Dear Friends of Girl Scouts: Looking back on the past year, Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey has accomplished so much in our mission to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Last year, our membership grew by over three percent to 26,475 girls. Our council led the nation in girl retention and had the third largest girl market share, with nearly one in six girls in northern New Jersey in kindergarten through grade 12 participating in Girl Scouts. GSNNJ also ranked sixth in the nation in adult retention, and seventh in the nation in membership growth. Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey also reached more than 2,800 girls through our Learn, Explore, Aspire, Dream (L.E.A.D.) initiative. More than 1,500 girls attended this council-led programming than the previous year. Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey joined Girl Scouts of the USA in announcing the release of more STEM and Outdoor badges in the summer of 2018. Girl Scouts nationwide are committed to fuel the pipeline of females in STEM careers. As a nationally recognized center of cybersecurity education, County College of Morris hosted the press conference and announced its continuing partnership with GSNNJ to offer program activities centered on the new cybersecurity badges and prepare girls for a future in STEM. In its tenth year of operation, the Girl Scouts FIRST LegoŽ League robotics program graduated its first group of college students and we are so proud that 80 percent of them majored in STEM fields. Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey also continued teaching girls financial literacy through the Girl Scout Cookie Program. This year, Digital Cookie, the online aspect of the cookie program, increased by 64 percent. In addition, girls accepted orders for 83,000 packages of cookies that were donated to service men and women. Each year, many Girl Scouts earn the Girl Scout Silver and Gold Awards, managing projects that change the world. At Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, 142 girls earned the Girl Scout Gold Award and 500 girls earned the Girl Scout Silver Award during the 2017-2018 program year. These awards represent a large number of hours that girls provide to the community while completing take action projects. Gold Award Girl Scouts focus on finding sustainable solutions to one of society’s challenges. Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey continues to strive to serve girls in all zip codes and help them reach their full potential through participation in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Thank you for support of our work and helping us build the next generation of female leaders. Yours in Girl Scouting,

2017-2018 highlights • Girl membership increased by over 3%. • Learn, Explore, Aspire, Dream (L.E.A.D.) initiative provided school-based programming, led by council staff, to over 2,800 girls in underserved communities, an increase of over 1,500 girls from the previous year. • Girl Scouts of the USA released 30 new Outdoor & STEM badges. • 16,520 participants were served through Councilsponsored program activities and events. • Infrastructure improvements were made to Camp Glen Spey, including the construction of two new cabins.

Strengthening membership Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey built membership by introducing several new initiatives that would build support in the community. Staff introduced faith-based organizations to Girl Scouts so girls can explore their faith while benefiting from the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. GSNNJ’s outreach also included cultivating new community partnerships and meeting with community leaders and educators to explore new ways Girl Scouts could help build tomorrow’s leaders and network of support.

Girl Scouts have pledged to help prepare girls for careers in STEM and to help fuel the future pipeline. The FIRST LegoÂŽ League robotics team is now in its tenth year. The first group of girls to participate on this team just graduated college and 80% of those young women majored in STEM fields. Page 7 | Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey 2018 Annual Report

Juliette Gordon Low Society

The Juliette Gordon Low Society recognizes a special group of donors who support the mission of Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey through a planned gift. The Society honors these members who—even after their lifetime—plan to continue their generosity. Juliette’s outstanding leadership was matched by her stewardship when she converted the carriage house of her home into the first Girl Scout national headquarters, and gifted it to Girl Scouts in her will. Juliette’s bequest was the beginning of planned giving to Girl Scouts. In her memory, the Juliette Gordon Low Society was established to thank and honor friends of Girl Scouting who choose to make Girl Scouts part of their legacies and a beneficiary of their estate plans. Members of the Juliette Gordon Low Society are crucial to ensuring that our Council will be able to provide future generations of Girl Scouts with opportunities to reach their fullest potential.

Independent Auditor’s Report

Independent Auditors' Report Board of Directors Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey We have audited the accompanying financial statements of Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey (a nonprofit organization), which comprise the statements of financial position as of September 30, 2018 and 2017, and the related statements of activities, functional expenses and cash flows for the years then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements. Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors’ Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors’ judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. Accordingly, we express no such opinion. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Opinion In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey as of September 30, 2018 and 2017, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.
