A note from our Girl Scout sister, Lisa West

Hi! My name is Lisa West.

I am a lifetime Girl Scout and a current troop leader You could say Girl Scouting is in my DNA I have been leading troops for over 30 years now, 17 here in the Kentuckiana council, bookending 13 years of leading USA Girl Scouts Overseas in Taipei, Taiwan. I was a Girl Scout for 11 years growing up in the 60’s and 70’s (from Brownies through Seniors) I have been a troop leader, volunteer recruiter, Overseas Committee Chair, Overseas camp director, a GSK annual meeting delegate, and GSUSA National Convention alternate delegate

I may have no children or grandchildren in a troop, but I have a multitude of Girl Scout “daughters” and “granddaughters.” Yes, Girl Scouting is that important to me

While I have had a multitude of positions in Girl Scouting, to me the most important is troop leader Helping girls find their voice, their courage, to try new things, and helping them develop the confidence to try new things and to take action to tackle issues that are important to them. Watching them develop new friendships, work together to help each other accomplish a task, learn about new cultures, and learn to think outside the box while solving problems... all these things keep me going as a leader. Seeing a Brownie too shy to ask for help opening a snack progress to having the confidence to take part in her school talent show. Girls confiding to me that horses scare them, then taking the chance and trying the ride, and telling me after that they love it.

From building campfires to building robots at the Science Museum, they learn that they can do anything. Girl Scouting makes a great difference in a girl’s life, helping them develop into confident young women ready to take on the world!

While I can bring the girls these new experiences, I cannot do it, and Council cannot do it, without your help. Your donations help provide the framework for the girls Without the adult trainings available, the camp properties to go to, and the support staff that provides programming and other help, all of which your donations help support, the Girl Scouting program can not properly function. I firmly believe that we have the best organization for girls to grow in; help me and the other leaders give the girls the opportunity to do so

The first planned gift in the Girl Scout Movement came from our founder, Juliette Gordon Low. After converting the carriage house of her home into the first Girl Scout national headquarters, she gifted the property to Girl Scouts in her will Become a member of the Juliette Gordon Low Society and carry on her legacy by making Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana a beneficiary of your estate plans.

On a beautiful morning at Camp Shantituck, we announced the newest addition to the Girl Scout Cookie lineup. Maggie Elder, CEO of Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, shared how the Girl Scout Cookie Program powers incredible opportunities for girls across Kentuckiana and reminded us that every purchase supports a girl and her troop right here at home. We also heard inspiring stories from Girl Scouts Kate Solon and Emmylou Lush, and guests got a sneak peek of the new cookie and a taste of outdoor adventure at camp.

Exploremores are joining the Girl Scout Cookie lineup in 2026!
