A message from Regina Moon, President and CEO

Dear GSEOK Friends,

I am so proud of all the accomplishments of our Girl Scouts, volunteers, and staff throughout 2023. Collectively, we took our mission seriously to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. With mental health needs increasing across our 30-county service area, we recognized our place on the front lines of girls’ well-being and began an initiative to bolster mental health supports across all program pillars. We celebrated seven new Gold Award Girl Scouts, who each earned the highest award in Girl Scouting by completing an 80-hour, sustainable service project in their community.

However, this year presented its fair share of challenges. With volunteerism declining across our communities, our appreciation has only deepened for our current, past, and future volunteers. Supporting girls and championing their ambitions requires

unwavering commitment, and we know this downward trend will continue to impact us in future years. It’s more crucial now than ever to ensure our Girl Scout volunteers feel valued, acknowledged, and listened to. The introduction of our New Troop Leader Kit for first-year leaders directly stems from ongoing dialogues aimed at pinpointing gaps and addressing needs within our current processes. Through our annual Adult Recognitions event, we had the opportunity to honor many of our devoted volunteers, ranging from Troop Leaders, Day Camp Facilitators, FIRST Robotics Mentors, and Outdoor Educators to Service Unit Volunteers, Adult Trainers, and Cookie Coordinators.

2023 brought continued growth in membership, programming, and finances. 60% of our service area increased in yearover-year membership, while our StaffLed Troops program saw a 125% increase

in participation over the last two years. Summer overnight camp at Camp Tallchief earned acclaim as a 2023 finalist in Tulsa Kids’ Family Favorites in the Favorite Overnight Camp category. As a proud partner of six area United Ways, we were thrilled to be nominated for the “Illuminate Award” by Tulsa Area United Way, honoring a model campaign conducted by a TAUW nonprofit partner. The 2nd annual Go Girl Gala highlighted Paula Marshall, CEO of Bama Companies, Inc. as our Trailblazer awardee and raised approximately $900,000 in crucial funds for our Girl Scout mission. Our future as an organization depends on maintaining healthy financials, and we ended this year closer to our goal of a six-month reserve.

However, our real stories of success are found not in the numbers presented in this report, but in the healthy friendships formed, moments of fun and stillness in the outdoors, and hard times made easier through a girl’s involvement in Girl Scouts. Thank you for being a vital part of it through your support, effort, and generosity.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Regina Moon, President and CEO, with 2023 Gold Award Recipient, Alyssa Engle and family.

Our Impact

Most Popular STEM Badge for Cadette Girl Scouts: Space Science Researcher

Our STEM pillar partnered with Tulsa University for cybersecurity and coding badge workshops, Woodward Park for outdoor classroom programs, Harvest Land Farm for architecture programs, and the Sutton Center for an Animal Habitats badge workshop. We celebrated the opening of a new observatory at Camp Wah-ShahShe and the success of our 19 FIRST Robotics teams, four of whom

advanced from regional qualifiers to the state-level competition. A trip to the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kansas, gave high school Girl Scouts the opportunity to simulate a moon landing, operate drones, fly an airplane, and build their engineering skills. We also took the first steps toward the creation of a formalized STEM mentorship program through a partnership with American Airlines.

Most Popular Outdoors Badge for Junior Girl Scouts: Horseback Riding!

For horse lovers, there were plenty of opportunities to upgrade their skills through classes at Dreamcatcher Arena and trail rides. Adventure trips to Utah and Buffalo River, as well as a caving adventure at Alabaster Caverns, gave our Girl Scouts the chance to explore and test their outdoor knowledge. Four volunteer-led day camps took place during the month of June in Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Oologah, and Stillwater.

Our Overnight Camp Director oversaw another successful overnight camp season and was selected by Girl Scouts of the USA to join a three-year cohort dedicated to addressing barriers to camp participation for girls who are LGBTQ+, diversely-abled, BIPOC, or from low-income communities. This year, more girls than ever before from our Girl Scouts Beyond Bars and StaffLed Troops programs were able to attend overnight camp.

GSEOK’s Life Skills program pillar includes troop-level programming such as first aid, nutrition, civic participation, community service, art, photography, travel, and storytelling.

Workshops on childcare, personal finance, and car maintenance gave girls practical knowledge for future success, while a “Whodunnit? Mystery Weekend” allowed participants to hone their critical thinking skills.

This pillar also includes our staff-led initiatives such as Girl Scouts Beyond Bars (GSBB) and Staff-Led Troops. In 2023, GSBB served a total of 743 girls, siblings,

and incarcerated parents. Nurturing Parenting classes for parents and reunification visits either through pen-pal communication or in-person at Mabel Bassett Correctional Center and Dr. Eddie Warrior Correctional Center encouraged important family reunification and the development of healthy parent-child relationships. Girl Scout troop meetings for children of incarcerated parents gave them vital peer-to-peer and adult mentor support.

Our Staff-Led Troops program served 529 girls from low-income and disinvested communities in Tulsa County where available volunteers were

scarce. Girls were served through eightweek sessions in Title I schools as well as through year-long afterschool troop meetings at the Hardesty Leadership Center and the Tulsa Dream Center. During troop meetings, GSEOK leaders helped girls set expectations for how to treat themselves and one another, building their confidence and helping them grow healthy relationships with peers and adult mentors.

Throughout the Girl Scout Fall Product Program and Cookie Program, participants learn important skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. Troop proceeds from the cookie program fund activities such as camping, field trips, community service projects, and travel. In 2023, the Cookie Program was impacted by supply chain issues, stunting total sales and creating challenges for participating girls to overcome.

Girl Scouts also use the cookie program as another way to give back to their community. As they earn rewards, they can choose to forego these rewards to support a collective cause. In 2023, Girl Scouts purchased new vines for the sloth enclosure at the Tulsa Zoo. Cookie customers can also choose to donate boxes to local charitable organizations, such as Blue Star Mothers or a local food bank.

All Photos: Cookie booths across our 30 counties helped girls of all ages build confidence in managing their cookie business!

Graduating Girl Scouts awarded Juliette Low Leadership Society Scholarship

The Girl Scout Gold Award, Silver Award, and Bronze Award prove girls have what it takes to build a better today and tomorrow. Girls shine brightest when they make the world a better place.

Juniors earn the Bronze Award by teaming up with other girls to make a difference in their communities.

Cadettes earn the Silver Award by researching an issue, making a plan to address it, and taking action to improve their communities.

Seniors and Ambassadors earn the Gold Award – the highest award in Girl Scouting – by developing and carrying out lasting solutions to issues in their neighborhoods and beyond. Gold Award Girl Scouts are change-makers. They have made a sustainable impact on the world that continues to last beyond their involvement, simultaneously impacting how they see the world –and how the world sees them. It’s a prestigious credential that will be with them for the rest of their life. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable – proof that not only can she make a difference, but that she already has.
