UPDATES FROM THE DEAN

COSMFacultyandStaff,

HappyMonday. Ihopeeveryoneisexcitedaboutthestartofanewacademicyear. Itisshapingupto beanincredibleyearwithrecordenrollments. Thecurrentestimateisthatwewill landsomewhere around29,500totalstudentsforthefallsemesterwithmorethan5,900newincomingfreshman students! COSMisalsoexperiencingsignificantgrowthinbothheadcountinourprogramsaswellas studentcredithours Forspecificdata,pleaseseetheslidesfromlastweek’scollegemeeting

ThenewBSBiomedicalSciencesprogramhasnearly140studentsenrolledinthefirstofficialsemester oftheprogram! TheproposaltostartthePhDprograminBiomedicalSciencesisexpectedtobeon theagendafortheSeptemberBoardofRegentsmeetingwhereweanticipategettingfinalapprovalto launchtheprogram. Ifapproved,westartboththePhDinMaterialsScienceaswellastheBiomedical SciencesinFall,2026.

Asyouknow,therearesomenewrequirementscomingfromUSGformakingsyllabipubliclyavailable PleaseworkwithyourchairsandBriantomakesurewecomplywiththesenewrequirements Additionally,wearebeginningtogetabetterunderstandingofthedetailsfortheconsolidationwith EastGeorgiaStateCollege. Weshouldgain13newCOSMfacultymembersaspartoftheconsolidation andwillneedtomakesomechangestoourbylawsandmanualstoaccommodatethenewfaculty roles.

COUR: EMERGING RESEARCHERS

SeekingUndergraduateResearchMentorsforCOUREmerging ResearchersProgram

TheCollegeofScienceandMathematicsOfficeofUndergraduateResearch(COUR)islookingfor research-activefacultytoserveasmentorsforundergraduateresearchstudentsaspartofour EmergingResearchersProgram,whichaimstoofferupto15hoursperweekofpaidresearch experiencetoCOSMstudentseligibleforfederalwork-study

TheEmergingResearchersProgramhasfundingfor11studentpositionsforFall2025.Studentswillbe paid$12/hourforupto229hourspersemester.Theseareyearlongappointments.Inmanyinstances, thestudentwillbeeligibletocontinuethepositionformultipleyearsasapprovedbytheGeorgia SouthernOfficeofFinancialAidandbasedontheirwork-studyeligibility.Additionalhoursmaybe availableduringthesummerinsomesituationsasdeterminedbytheOfficeofFinancialAid.

ThegoaloftheEmergingResearchersProgramsistogiveCOSMstudentshands-onexperiences intheirfieldofstudythatwillpropelthemtosuccessintheirchosencareerpath.Theseresume buildingexperienceswillprovidestudentstheopportunitytogainmarketableskillsforasuccessful transitiontocareersinSTEM,aswellasadmissionintohighqualitygraduateprograms.Byutilizing theirwork-studyeligibility,studentswillgetthefinancialbenefitofpaidresearchpositionsaswellas theworkexperienceintheirchosenSTEMfields.

ToserveasaresearchmentorforastudentaspartoftheCOUREmergingResearchersProgram, facultyshouldprovidethefollowinginformationthroughtheCOUREmergingResearchersProgram MentorGoogleForm:

Ahalf-pageabstractforeachprojectavailabletostudents;and 2-3sentencesdescribingtheworkstudentswouldbedoingaspartofthatproject-for example:“Studentsworkingonthisprojectwillconductsynthesisoforganicmoleculesusing standardtechniquesandcharacterizethesyntheticproductsusingNMRandMass spectrometrytodeterminestructure.Additionally,studentswillperformanalysisusingNMR titrationstostudybindingaffinities,usefluorescentandUV-Visiblespectroscopytostudy opticalproperties,andothertechniquesasneededtounderstandmolecularproperties.”

TohaveastudentbegininyourlabintheFallsemester,pleasecompleteandsubmittheform bySeptember1,2025.Facultymaysubmitmultipleprojects,ifapplicable.
