Recently COSM was awarded a nearly $2 million NSF S-STEM grant to support scholarships and programmingforacademicallytalented,Pell-eligiblestudentswithunmetfinancialneed
Our first cohort of 18 S-STEM Scholars will begin in Fall 2025, and we are currently seeking dedicated facultymentorstosupportthesestudentsthroughouttheirundergraduatejourney.
What’sInvolved:
Asafacultymentor,youwill:
Serveastheprimaryuniversitycontactforyourassignedscholar.
MeetmonthlywithyourscholarduringFall2025andSpring2026,and1–2timespersemesterin thefollowingyears(nosummermeetingsrequired).
Complete and update a Student Success Plan (SSP) at each meeting to reflect on academic, professional,andpersonalprogress.
ParticipateinabrieftrainingsessiononhowtocompleteaSSP
Havetheopportunitytomentormorethanonescholar
Receive$500perscholarperyearassummersalary

AssistantProfessorMunshiRahman,PhD,anativeofBangladesh,isworkingtoidentifyhigh-riskareas usinggeographicinformationsystems(GIS)andcommunitysurveys.InJanuary,hetraveledwith juniorGeosciencemajorEmmaRobinsontoCox’sBazartomapvulnerablezonesandcollectdatato supportlocaldisasterresponseefforts.
Robinsonsaidtheprojecthelpedfuelherpassionforenvironmentalresearch.“It’sagreatfirststepinto fieldwork,”shesaid.“Thisexperiencehasboostedmyconfidenceasastudentandresearcher.”
Theirfindingsrevealedthatmanyhomesandrefugeecampsarebuiltonunstableslopesandlackthe infrastructuretowithstandflooding.Rahmanemphasizedtheneedforsustainablelanduseand inclusivedisasterplanning.
