55 Years:

with determination AND hope… our mission continues.

Welcome to the 2024 Transition Projects IMPACT gala. Tonight marks the 55th year since the Reverend Gil Lulay and volunteers joined together to form Transition Projects, believing that everyone is entitled to a home. Ever since, Transition Projects has been at work on our community’s toughest challenges—people unsheltered, rising rents, higher levels of need—with a sense of hope and the same determination of those who founded us.

As we gather tonight, our work is as urgent and vital as ever. We will take a few moments to share with you how your support empowers us to serve those who need us the most. We hope to inform and inspire you. It is now my honor to thank you for joining us tonight and to welcome you.

ENTERTAINMENT

Edna Vazquez is a singer, songwriter, composer, and guitarist whose powerful voice and musical talent transcend the boundaries of language to engage and uplift her audience. Her vocal range allows her to paint seamlessly with her original material, an intersection of Mexican Tradicional, rock, pop, and other genres. Her passion for music grew from her bicultural roots and, with songs deeply rooted in universal human emotion, She has traveled far and wide spreading her message of light, love, and cultural healing and continues to grow as a solo artist and collaborator with Pink Martini.

Thomas Lauderdale has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras and ensembles, including Oregon Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Portland Youth Philharmonic, Chamber Music Northwest, and Oregon Ballet Theatre. They have sold over 2.5 million albums worldwide on Thomas’ label Heinz Records. Hunter Noack , a concert pianist, grew up hunting, fishing, and kayaking the rivers of Oregon. He is the founder and artistic director of IN A LANDSCAPE: Classical Music in the Wild™, an outdoor concert series founded in 2016, where traditional concert halls are replaced by forests, fields, de-serts, and riverbank vistas. ABOUT TRANSITION PROJECTS

NAVIGATION TEAM

Our Navigation Team comprised of nine multi-disciplinary outreach team members, conducts direct outreach to over 3,000 people experiencing homelessness each year. The team engages in client advocacy, problem-solving, needs assessments, resource sharing, crisis intervention and de-escalation, and system navigation assistance to people experiencing unsheltered homelessness across the metro area. The team goes to areas where high-impact camping exists and offers access to services including shelter, health supports (medical, mental health, substance use), transportation assistance, identification and benefits assistance, and housing and rental assistance. This work is intensive and requires a daily engagement that can take up to several weeks. Last year they facilitated 96 people into treatment/detox programs, 102 people into Transitional housing, and 43 people into permanent housing.

SHELTER

Transition Projects began 55 years ago by sheltering 20 men. Today, we are proud to serve as the largest shelter provider in Oregon. Each night, over 700 individuals, couples, and their pets access a safe place to rest at one of our eight shelters located across Portland. As unsheltered homelessness continues to rise in our city, we remain com-mitted to providing quality, comprehensive shelter services for our guests. Shelter guests access case management, health providers, nutritional meals, housing support, income development services, and much more.

HOUSING

Transition Projects believes in Housing First, meaning that quality, reliable housing for those we serve is always the top priority. Stable housing provides a launching pad from which our participants can access a swath of other services to ensure long-term stability and housing retention. Transition Projects operates several housing programs, including one of the few transgender and non-binary permanent supportive housing programs in the region, as well as a housing program for young, single, Black mothers and their children. Each year, over 600 households access permanent housing with the support of our housing teams. We are currently expanding our permanent supportive housing to specifically serve transgender, nonbinary, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) individuals. Transition Projects owns and operates three housing properties: Barbara Maher in NE Portland; Clark Annex, in inner SE Portland, and Argyle Gardens in N Portland.

VETERANS SERVICES

Transition Projects supports individuals who have served in all branches of the military and their families, who are experiencing homelessness or are in imminent danger of homelessness, to help them find and keep safe, affordable housing in the Portland metro area. Veterans Services provides wraparound support including income development services to help veterans find meaningful employment, legal services access, health and wellness providers and more. Last year, over 700 households received support from our Veterans Services team.

Meet Rei

“MY TRANSITION PROJECTS CASE MANAGER GAVE ME SOMETHING I HADN’T HAD FOR YEARS, SOMEONE WHO BELIEVED IN ME.”

Rei became homeless at the age of 15 years old. For years, they lived on the street, in cars, or couch surfing with friends. This was until Rei met a case manager at Transition Projects, who provided them with the resources and a plan to get them off the streets. But more importantly, Rei shared with us, “Transition Projects connected me with something greater: someone who believed in me.”

Rei has been off the streets ever since and is now a leader at Transition Projects, guiding case managers just like the one who helped them. “Transition Projects made the difference,” Rei shared, “and I’m in a better place in life because of the help I found here.”
