This Side of Paradise The stories of famous people who have stayed in Versilia Le storie e i personaggi che sono passati dalla Versilia

This is not meant to be a piece on history, it would be too boring for a magazine that wants to be light, so that people can flip through it on the seaside while enjoying an ice lolly, rigorously hand-made and with a vintage wrapper. But this shore has been visited by a very large number of charming and intellectual personalities -artists, authors, sovereigns and aristocrats (fallen and not)- who have turned the Versilia into a special place, whose fascination has not just to do with nightlife and fashion. That is why we have decided to tell you some stories that will help you discover the golden age of the Versilia. The Nineteenth Century The first famous personality who visited Viareggio in 1822 was Paolina Bonaparte who commissioned the construction of a house on the beach, not very near to the city centre and right in the place where the body of her favorite poet Percy Shelley was found and then cremated by Byron. Many sovereigns from all over Europe followed then her example. The Twentieth Century Viareggio lost its wooden buildings when it was razed by fire in 1917. It was then that Viareggio was given its present layout, and it was still at the beginning of the 20th Century that Forte dei Marmi began to be the favorite place for celebrities when they had to take part to –also as protagonists- the mundane events held in Viareggio, combining glamour experiences with the less mundane atmosphere of Forte dei Marmi. Questo non vuol essere un pezzo storico, sarebbe troppo noioso per un magazine che nasce leggero, con l’idea precisa di farsi sfogliare in riva al mare, mentre si assapora un ghiacciolo, rigorosamente artigianale con l’involucro di carta vintage. Ma da queste spiagge è passato un esercito di personaggi charmant - intellettuali, artisti, scrittori, sovrani e nobili più o meno decaduti – che hanno reso la Versilia un luogo speciale con un fascino che va oltre il glamour dei suoi locali notturni e dei suoi riti modaioli. Abbiamo così deciso di raccontarvi una manciata di storie che possano tracciare l’età dell’oro di queste spiagge. L’Ottocento La prima illustre ospite di Viareggio fu proprio nel 1922 Paolina Bonaparte che si fece edificare una casa sulla spiaggia, un po’ lontana dal centro nel luogo dove il mare aveva restituito il corpo di Percy Shelley, suo poeta preferito e dove Byron aveva fatto allestire il rogo per cremarlo. Seguono l’esempio di Paolina tanti sovrani da tutta Europa. Il Novecento L’incendio a Viareggio del 1917 distrugge tutti gli edifici in legno. E’ da questa data che Viareggio acquisisce il suo attuale aspetto, e è sempre dagli inizi del’900 che Forte dei Marmi diventa buen ritiro dei personaggi celebri che partecipano ai riti mondani di Viareggio, anche come veri e propri protagonisti, ma alternano queste uscite sfavillanti a un manage più defilato nella vicina For-

here: Luigi Pirandello, Carlo Carrà, Eleonora Duse, Galileo Chini. Architects like Alfredo Belluomini, Giovanni Michelucci, Giuseppe Quaroni from Rome have built Art Noveau buildings along the coast line between Viareggio and Massa. And it was in the overshadowed villas in the Pineta or under the white tents of the chicest beaches that passion and Summer loves were found and lived. But what was between the very beautiful Virginia Agnelli –widow of Edoardo- and Curzio Malaparte, with whom she started a relationship just a few months after her husband’s death and moved to Forte dei Marmi, was not just a Summer love. A less complicated story is the one that saw the relationship of love and friendship between a group of intellectuals and the Quarto Platano (Fourth Plane Tree) in Forte dei Marmi- called ‘Battrifredo’ by Riccardo Bacchelli in a 1942 novel and located next to a café where these group of intellectuals –Pea, Carrà, De Robertis, Angioletti, Caretti, Anna Banti, Bigongiari, Piccioni, Roberto Longhi and all the others, the gentlewomen..(Wonders of Italy 1939, E.N.)- used to gather. In that period, in 1929 to be more precise, the Capannina di Franceschi –a club that boasts a timeless charm-was built. Achille Franceschi, known as Nevio, purchased an old bathing hut by a carpenter to play cards with his friends. A year later the club was furnished with beach chairs, tables and a gramophone: very popular among people, it became the place where intel-

All’interno delle Ville ombrose della Pineta o sotto le tende bianche delle spiagge più chic si consumano vere e proprie passioni e amori estivi. Non è una liason estiva la relazione tra la bellissima Virginia Agnelli, vedova di Edoardo, che solo dopo pochi mesi dalla morte del marito si lega a Curzio Malaparte e si rifugia a Forte. Meno turbolenta la storia di amore e amicizia che lega un nutrito gruppo di intellettuali al Quarto Platano di Forte dei Marmi chiamato Battifredo, con il nome che gli attribuisce Riccardo Bacchelli in un romanzo del 1942 e che si trovava in prossimità di un caffè dove questa intellighenzia balneare - Pea, Carrà, De Robertis, Angioletti, Caretti, Anna Banti, Bigongiari, Piccioni, Roberto Longhi, gli altri tutti, le gentilissime lor donne.. ( Le Meraviglie d’Italia 1939, ndr) - si riuniva volentieri. Nasce in questi primi anni del ‘900, precisamente nel 1929, la Capannina di Franceschi, luogo dal fascino intramontabile. lectual gathered before sunset, at happy hour time. Fabolous Sixties The glamorous events of the Sixties were not held in the Capannina, but at the new club Bussola. And while overseas everybody was crazy for Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and June Carter, here people could see Mina –very loved by manager Sergio Bernardini, Vittorio Gassman, Gino Paoli and, on a mid-Summer night, “The Divine” Marlene Dietrich. Among the public, young rich entrepreneurs: the Agnelli and Moratti brothers, Felice Riva..The lights were down, it was New Year’s Eve of 1968: outside, people were protesting against the rich and. A police officer fired a shot, a young man was injured. It was the end of an epoch and the beginning of another.

In platea la meglio gioventù dell’epoca: gli Agnelli, i Moratti, Felice Riva…Le luci si spengono il Capodanno del 1968: mentre dentro si balla, fuori la contestazione contro “i ricchi e i padroni”. Parte un colpo di pistola dalla polizia, un ragazzo rimane ferito. Finisce un’epoca ne inizia un’altra.

From one canal to another. From Burlamacco to Versilia. This long stretch of beaches and sand, a well-known holiday destination for at least one century, teems with history and culture, in addition to the vast array of entertainment it offers. In Viareggio, the “gem” of the Versilian Coast, besides enjoying the cool sea breeze in the eastern and western pinewoods and taking a selfie in front of the sixteenth-century Matilde Tower, take a walk along the pier, which separates the calm waters of the bustling port and shipyards (where some of the world’s most beautiful boats are built) from the more agitated sea waters that break on the beaches filled with umbrellas and vacationers. Going northwards, you can stroll up and down the promenade or drive along the seafront avenues lined with Art-Nouveau buildings, such as the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte, probably the Coast’s best-known hotel. Quali sono gli imperdibili must di questo lembo di sabbia dove da almeno un secolo villeggiatura fa rima con cultura, ma anche con innumerevoli piacevolezze della vita. A Viareggio, la “perla” della Versilia, oltre che nelle pinete di levante e di ponente e a farsi un selfie davanti alla cinquecentesca Torre Matilde, è imperdibile una passeggiata sul molo che, quasi fosse un Mosè lapideo, divide le placide acque del porto turistico (e cantieristico, in cui nascono assoluti gioielli della marineria italiana) da quelle del mare, più agitate, che finiscono la loro corsa sulle spiagge fitte di ombrelloni. Actually this third seaside town on the Versilian Coast, after Viareggio and Lido di Camaiore, is divided into four areas: Le Focette- which was once the heart of Versilia’s nightlife with Bernardini’s Bussola and other famous clubs where the most popular Italian singers of the sixties, such as Mina, began their career-, Motrone, Tonfano with its street markets and Fiumetto, named after the stagnant stream that runs through a park with a bridge crossing it that looks straight out of Mary Poppins. “Pietrasanta is an extraordinary and wonderful place for sculpturing: it runs thick in everyone’s veins and everything revolves around it here. From Michelangelo on, all great sculptors have been closely associated with Pietrasanta”, says Fernando Botero’s wife, who arrived in Pietrasanta in 1985 and never left. And there is no doubt that sculpturing runs in your veins if you don’t feel disarmed when face to face with a huge, whole, white block of marble. The same can be said for bronze: working in a foundry requires a great deal of passion and determination. That is what Pietrasanta is about: nestled between the Apuan Alps and the sea, this town has a deep and passionate soul hidden behind its elegantly dégagé restaurants and sophisticated but never too loud boutiques, a soul you can connect with in the workshops where world-famous works of art are created. The summer season promises to be rich in great exhibitions and internationallyrenowned names. The stars of the first event, Homo Faber, are Pietrasanta’s artisans and their wonderful creations. From June 14 to July 13, Piazza del Duomo, the Church of Sant’Agostino and other downtown venues will be housing over 40 works of art testifying to the close cooperation between world-famous artists and artisans. The Other Versilia A tour of the hinterland Un tour dell’entroterra

From Torre del Lago to Cinquale. Over thirty kilometers of coastline. It is the Versilian Coast which, in summertime, becomes one of Italy’s most extraordinary “amusement parks”. But Versilia is not only about sea, sun, beaches, nightclubs, VIPs and paparazzis. All you have to do is rotate by 180 degrees and turn your eyes to the hinterland where you will discover “the other Versilia”, the one that never dominates gossip columns, as it is hardly every the setting for juicy love affairs, but it has much more interesting facts to learn about than the Coast. And you don’t have to look like Indiana Jones: you just need to be curious and willing to spend a few hours away from the beach. The first two places worth visiting are Sant’Anna di Stazzema and Gombitelli. The first one is a small village near the town of Stazzema which, in the summer of 1944, was the site of a Nazi-German massacre, in memory of which a monument was built on the top of a hill with breathtaking view of the Versilian landscape. The second place is Gombitelli, near the town of Camaiore. Once reachable only through a mule track, this village is said to have been a language island, as the locals used to speak a Gallic-Roman dialect (half German half French), and was best-

Da Torre del Lago al Cinquale. Oltre 30 chilometri di costa. È la Versilia che d’estate si trasforma in uno dei più straordinari divertimentifici d’Italia. Ma la Versilia non è solo mare, sole, spiagge, discoteche, vip e paparazzi. Basta ruotare se stessi di 180 gradi, dirigere lo sguardo verso l’interno e subito apparirà “l’altra Versilia”, quella dell’entroterra, che non conquista le pagine dei rotocalchi rosa perché non è teatro di love story a raffica, ma custodisce molte più cose da scoprire rispetto alla costa. E non occorre essere degli Indiana Jones: basta un po’ di curiosità ed essere disponibili trascorrere qualche ora lontano dalla spiaggia. I primi due luoghi che vengono a mente sono Sant’Anna di Stazzema e Gombitelli. Il primo è una frazioncina del comune di Stazzema che nell’estate del 1944 fu teatro di una strage di cui oggi si celebra il ricordo con un monumento posto in cima a un colle da cui si ottiene una vista mozzafiato. Il secondo luogo è Gombitelli, nel comune di Camaiore, che per anni è stato al centro di una disputa dal sapore leggendario. Perché in un posto simile – una volta raggiungibile solo attraverso una mulattiera – i vecchi del posto parlavano un dialetto gallo romano (cioè mezzo tedesco e mezzo francese) costituendo una vera e propria isola linguistica. E perché fino a qualche tempo il pae-

Gombitelli is today a small lovely town attracting tourists for its excellent cured pork meat products, above all, lard. The list of places to visit rising at the back of Versilia’s beaches is very long and you will be spoilt for choice: from Pieve a Elici to the many free climbers’ paradises on Mount Procinto, not far from Forte dei Marmi, from the fairy tale-like village of Gualdo a Gello with its magnificent abbey to the medieval village of Pruno, from Monte Altissimo, access to which is from a road Michelangelo use to walk along five hundred years ago, to the beautiful Church of San Giovanni e Santa Felicita in Valdicastello, the Versilia area’s oldest church dating back to the 9th century A.C., up to the natural pool of Malbacco, near Seravezza, which looks more like the set of Blue Lagoon. Our off-the-beatenpath tour cannot but end in Colonnata, the age-old town populated by quarrymen which, though located in the Lunigiana area, near Carrara is one of the favorite destinations of those holidaying on the Versilian Coast, being well-known for its white marble as well as for its delicious lard, a delicacy definitely worth the trip.

La lista dei luoghi ameni da visitare alle spalle delle spiagge versiliesi è molto lunga e non c’è che l’imbarazzo della scelta: dalla suggestiva Pieve a Elici ai paradisi dei free climbers sulle pareti del Procinto non lontano da Forte dei Marmi, dal paesaggio tipico del “paese dei balocchi” di Gualdo a Gello che custodisce la sua stupenda abbazia, fino al respiro medievale di Pruno, dal Monte Altissimo cui si giunge percorrendo la via tracciata 500 anni fa da Michelangelo fino alla bellissima Pieve di San Giovanni e Santa Felicita di Valdicastello, la più antica della Versilia, esistente dalla metà del IX secolo dopo Cristo, fino alla piscina naturale di Malbacco vicino Seravezza, che pare il set di “Laguna blu”. Questo itinerario di meraviglie tuttavia non può che concludersi a Colonnata, l’antico paese dei cavatori che, pur trovandosi in Lunigiana, vicino a Carrara, è una delle mete preferite dei vacanzieri della Versilia, così immersa nel candore del marmo al quale, da sempre, corrisponde quello del lardo, la specialità che val bene un viaggio.

Stessa formula, ma a Marina di Pietrasanta, al FrancoMare che serve un ottimo risotto mantecato con gambero rosso e burrata d’Andria e la vaporata di mare (pescato del giorno cotto a vapore servito con maionese wasabi). Se decidete invece optate per il fascino e la frescura dell’entroterra, a Pietrasanta, le proposte top sono: Enoteca Marcucci storico ristorante, bello dentro, simpatico fuori, dove si mangia bene, si beve meglio e non è difficile incontrare Adriano Galliani in camicia chiara e pullover di cotone sulle spalle, e il Pinocchio nel cui menù, che cambia frequentemente, compaiono piatti assolutamente da provare, come i ravioli di burrata alle arselle, il filetto di tonno in crosta e verdure croccanti alla soia e il cous cous di mare. Located in the exclusive district of Roma Imperiale, a few dozens of meters away from the Capannina club and seaside promenade, it is one of the most popular cafes in Forte dei Marmi, combining elegance, tradition, fashion and versatility. Professional barmen with experience abroad carefully prepare a wide selection of cocktails with innovative ingredients. Chill out, house and jazz music in the background. A few steps from the Caffè Morin is the Almarosa, with its hippy-chic atmosphere (89a, Viale Morin), a gathering point for young people staying in the whole Versilia region. Nightlife in Versilia, tra nomi storici e suggestive location sul mare Warm and long summer nights are the best time of the year to go to Versilia. This coastal area boasts a number of well-known clubs where you can dance the night away till the morning light. What are the best? Capannina di Franceschi is a flagship venue of nights out in Forte dei Marmi: started in 1929, it became the most glamorous nightclub of the 60s and 70s. Gino Paoli singing Sapore di sale, Edoardo Vianello singing Pinne fucile e occhiali, Bruno Lauzi and his Ritornerai remain iconic in the collective imagination, along with Ray Charles, Gilberto Gil, Fred Bongusto and Little Tony and, in more recent years, James Brown, Gloria Gaynor, Ornella Vanoni, Riccardo Cocciante. It is open in June on Fridays and Saturdays, in July on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and in August every night. Among the not-to-be-missed August events are the Wednesday nights with Jerry Calà, J-Ax performing on August 11, Patty Pravo’s concert on August 17, the club’s 85th birthday party on August 21 and Umberto Smaila’s show on August 22. The location is unique of its kind: the poolside feeling extends all the way to the sea. Another cult club in Marina di Pietrasanta is Seven Apples: very popular with a younger crowd, it features a large garden and lovely poolside setting. Hip-hop night on Tuesdays, house/commercial music over the weekend (a tip: try the Sunday aperitivo from 8.30 pm on). Other nightclubs of more recent date, favorites with the younger ones, are Ostras Beach in Viale Roma in Marina di Pietrasanta, Costes in Forte dei Marmi (crowded to the full at aperitivo time) and the Beach Club and Sunset in Cinquale.
