FROZEN CHARM
What to do and where to go to experience the magic of Milan in winter
TEXT Virginia Mammoli
The frozen waters of the Navigli, the spires of the Cathe dral dusted with snow, steaming cups of choc olate in historic cafes, spar kling Christmas lights, festive store windows in Via Mon te Napoleone, markets and ice rinks… Milan in fall and winter has all the charm of a cosmopolitan city that never stops, not even when the tem perature plummets - on the contrary, a very special atmo sphere seems to invade all the districts. Shopping, art, cul ture, good food - Milan has a lot to offer when the weather turns cold. Let’s begin from the 19th cen
tury Galleria Vi orio Emanu ele II, a great place for brows ing top international brands on a rainy day, sheltered by
the great Art Nouveau vault ed glass roof. Another luxury
shopping destination is the nearby Fashion District, a succession of gli ering win dow displays of jewellery, accessories and designer clothing. If you’re looking for something special but less conventional either for your self or a gi for someone, take a stroll through the Cinque Vie (Via di Santa Marta, Via del Bollo, Via Bocche o, Via Santa Maria Fulcorina and Via Santa Maria Podone), an authentically Milanese neigh bourhood where you’ll find art galleries, artists’ studios, cra s and antique shops, as well as clothing boutiques and modern design. Here you will also find the Pinacoteca

Ambrosiana housing Leonar do da Vinci’s legendary Codex Atlanticus, and his famous Portrait of a Musician, along with masterpieces by artists such Raphael, Caravaggio, Bo icelli and Titian. One of the city’s many museums even more pleasant to visit at this time of year. Some of the best known are the Pinacoteca di Brera, Palazzo Reale, with its rich calendar of exhibitions, the Museo del Novecento, Museo del Cenacolo Vincia no (if you have booked ahead of time to see Leonardo’s Last Supper) and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna. For those who love both modern art and architecture, there are
MUDEC, Fondazione Prada and Pirelli HangarBicocca., while fashion history enthusi asts should not miss Armani/ Silos and Palazzo Morando.
Among the lesser known are Labirinto Arnaldo Pomo doro, Museo del Risorgimen to and Museo del Fume o.
You can also escape the cold in the city’s many churches –the Duomo of course, an un disputed Gothic masterpiece, the Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio or Sant’Eustorgio. A small lesser known gem is the Chie sa di Santa Maria presso San Satiro, with its amazing trompe-l’oeil a ributed to Bramante. Shopping, art, culture… and
good food? Milan is the home of historic patisseries and tra ditional tra orias. And trust us, there’s nothing be er at this time of year than a tea or hot chocolate to warm heart and hands, or a traditional Milanese dish such as osso buco, riso o or cotole a alla milanese (veal rib chop). So make time for a mouth-wa tering stop at somewhere like Pasticceria Cova, one of the oldest cafes in Italy, or Pas ticceria Marchesi, founded slightly later in 1824, now not only in its original location in Via Santa Maria alla Por ta, but also Galleria Vi orio Emanuele II and Via Monte Napoleone. 35 YEARS HAPPY BIRTHDAY STENDHAL
Together we discover the classic Stendhal restaurant
If you want to treat yourself to a break from the noisy, chaotic life in Milan without leaving the beating heart of the historic city centre, at Stendhal time seems to slow to another rhythm - your own. A mix of oldstyle Milan and the bohemian Paris of the last century, the restaurant - a favourite among lo cals - offers the genuine flavours of Lombardy and Italian cuisine with a modern twist that does not detract from tradition but re interprets it with simplicity and lightness in dishes that are per fect and contemporary. Founded in 1987, the Stendhal has been run by the Forti family for over 20 years; the magic of bygone days and loyalty to the values of fine dining are preserved intact,
without the dusty, old-fashioned atmosphere of some traditional inns. The menu includes vege tarian dishes, light for a delicious informal business lunch, along side traditional recipes such as braised marrowbone with gremolada and saffron riso o, classic mondeghili meatballs, green tonnarelli pasta with veal ragout and truffle oil, veal with tuna sauce and Milanese veal cutlet. Meats, fish, cheeses and plant-based dishes are served in a sophisticated se ing with a focus on detail, from mirrors to table linen, wood panelling to fresh flowers from the stall in front of the San Marco church; modern art from the collection of owner Marcello Forti, and the background music, which
creates the unique atmosphere loved by a smart, exacting clien tele who want to feel at home. In addition to the two dining rooms, the restaurant also has a heated outdoor area with a green ceiling reminiscent of a winter garden. The perfect set ting for a family dinner, a special celebration or an intimate con versation under so lighting. A key part of the place’s alchemy is the Stendhal team, who always greet guests with a smile, relate the menu and the great wine list like a wonderful story. Because, at the end of the day, what you take away from a lunch or a din ner is not only the memory of ex ceptional food, but also the good vibes that accompany it and make you want to go back.

OF ART WAITING MILAN, A CITY
TO BE REDISCOVERED
In this article, we want to tell you about a lesser known side of Milan, a city of art waiting to be rediscovered which will appeal both to tour ists and people from Milan. To start our tour, we have chosen one of Milan’s oldest churches: the Cathedral of Sant’Ambro gio. It is the city’s second most important church, built in the second half of the 4th century by Saint Ambrose himself and then extended in the late Ro manesque period. The church was the location of the famous conversion of Saint Augustine and here you can also admire a 9th-century gilt bronze altar by Vuolvino dedicated to the saint. It is made of red brick intermixed with white stones and features a simple twopitched façade partially hidden by a large portico which recalls a narthex - the place where people had to wait their turn to be baptised. The Cathedral is instead a Gothic master piece built in perfect Northern European style. Its construc tion started in 1387 thanks to
Gian Galeazzo Visconti who opened the building site, also managing to deprive the rival city of Florence of its record for having the largest church in the world. Instead of the traditional Lombard brick, the cathedral was built in marble and with the help of northern European workers. Besides the Cathedral, the complex in cludes the Workshops, the Mu seum, the Archive-Library and the Music Chapel. Our tour of Milan continues with the Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano. Here it is compulso ry to make a reservation but it is definitely worth it. Thanks to a new lighting system installed last autumn, the visit is now even more special. Santa Ma ria delle Grazie, a Dominican church extended by Ludovico il Moro to transform it into a family mausoleum shows the incredible curiosity and artis tic passion of the Lord of Milan. It was here that Leonardo met Bramante and created one of his most significant works: the Last Supper. It is considered

the most important mural painting; not only because for the first time all the apostles including Judas are represent ed si ing at the same side of the table, but also because in this painting, Leonardo exper imented with new techniques that could allow a longer paint ing method. Unfortunately, the use of tempera and the very humid environment quick ly damaged his masterpiece, and today we can only admire a faint memory of it. The Ron danini Pietà by Michelangelo is instead well preserved and potent in its extreme moderni ty. It is housed in the Castello Sforzesco, a building whose medieval and Renaissance ar chitecture is the emblem of the
power of Ludovico il Moro and the genius of Leonardo who helped with its fortification. The Pietà is Michelangelo’s last masterpiece. It seems that he worked at it until the last days of his life - once he stopped working at the Bandini Pietà, he even tried to smash it with a hammer - leaving to posterity a sculpture which with simple sketched traits represented all the pain and sorrow of death. At this point, one cannot miss a visit to the Pinacoteca di Brera where some works of art ex plain the evolution of art. For example, the Lamentation over the Dead Christ, Mantegna’s most emblematic work whose unusual perspective - perhaps it was supposed to be observed
through an oculus - seems to project art directly in the twentieth century; or also the Altarpiece of Brera by Piero del la Francesca. Here the perfect combination of zenithal light and perspective harmony help to reunite the saints to Feder ico da Montefeltro who com missioned the work. And even though many prefer the Sup per at Emmaus in the National Gallery, the one of Brera has a much more self contained and reflective quality. It is as if Caravaggio wanted not only to depict the wonder but also the mystery of the resurrection. And what can be said about Hayez’s passionate painting, The Kiss? It is set in the Middle Ages but it recalls the revolu

tionary movements of the 19th century. It is a soldier who says goodbye to his love: he will have to win, and maybe survive. The Rotonda della Besana is also worth a visit: through its long history, it was first used as a hospital, then as a post-Ba roque cemetery and finally as a Mausoleum. Today, it is a vast complex with gardens and are as reserved for exhibitions. The city of Milan can also boast beautiful villas in its histor ic centre. For example, the House-Museum Boschi Di Ste fano. This house belonged to Antonio Boschi and Marieda Di Stefano. It is an opportunity to discover the life of this wealthy couple who were able to collect about 2,000 works of art, 300 of which are on display here to day. Villa Necchi Campiglio is an architectural jewel from the 1930s which features a swim ming pool, a smoking room, dining and living rooms. In the rooms of this villa surrounded by greenery you can still ad mire the elegant and never too excessive style of this family of
industrialists. Before moving on to the third millennium, it is important to mention two of the city’s exhibition venues: the Palazzo Reale which con tinues a tradition that began in the 1950s; and the Museo Novecento with the complete restoration of the two floors of the Arengario dedicated to Ital ian art of the 1920s - 1950s. The exhibition begins with Ital ian works from the 1920s and 1930s, including a solo exhibi tion dedicated to Giorgio Mo randi. A er passing through the rooms of Marino Marini and the large area dedicated to Lucio Fontana, the visit contin ues in the long hall on the fi h floor with art from the second post-war period, including the rooms dedicated to Manzoni and Burri.
The headquarters of the Fon dazione Prada in Milan is a combination of industry and art, and along with those of Venice and Rome is an exhibi tion venue, but also a place of artistic production. To be pre cise, fashion and art. And the
point of connection is precise ly the 60-metre tower which completes the tour desired by Dutch architect Rem Kool haas. And now we are almost in the future. There are two areas that best interpret this new century. The first is Porta Garibaldi with the Unicredit Tower standing out from the various contemporary works of art and buildings—with its 231 metres of height and 31 floors, it is the highest skyscraper in Italy. Also, the nearby pedes trian and elevated square Gae Aulenti designed by Argentine architect César Pelli. In the nearby Isola district, the Ver tical Forest designed by the Studio Boeri (Stefano Boeri, Gi anandrea Barreca and Giovan ni La Varra) stands out like an enchanted dream. The other area is the new centre, Milano Citylife: among residential complexes and Art Nouveau buildings, you will find the Torto, the Curvo and the Drit to: three must-see towers de signed by Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind.

PALAZZO INA
There are many entrances with a recognisable appearance scattered throughout Milan, all designed by some of the most famous architects of the 20th century. But the most instagrammed? The entrance hall of Palazzo Ina by modernist architect Piero Bottoni, who also designed Monte Stella and Qt8. An atrium with Palladian Carrara marble flooring, while the walls are covered with powder pink and cobalt blue tiles: a perfect mix for Instagram.

VIA LINCOLN
Low-rise houses, pastel shades, small balconies and flower gardens. The houses in Via Lincoln, a former working-class district now known as the Rainbow district are all painted in different colours. Some even gave it the nickname of Milanese Bura no, and it is a sought-after place by those who, in addition to the mon uments, want to discover the city’s secret and unusual places.
FONDAZIONE PRADA
The architecture of the museum offers a varied choice of views and panoramas to take a good photo. For example, the Upside Down Mushroom Room: a dreamlike installation by Carsten Höller that enriches the At las, the permanent collection of the Fondazione Prada, and attracts the curiosity of many visitors. But also the Bar Luce, designed by film direc tor Wes Anderson: pastel tones, juke box, pinball machines and a refined vintage atmosphere to feel like being in a film while sipping a cup of coffee.

ARTLINE

These are just three of the art installations found at Ar tline, the park in the shadow of the skyscrapers of the City Life district, that is enriched every year with new installations. A new life for the old headquarters of the army in Piazza delle Armi, that was used for military exercises until 1923.

VICOLO DEI LAVANDAI
Located along the Navigli, Vicolo dei Lavandai offers a picturesque view of the old Milan. You can see the stream, the canopy still supported by small wooden beams and the old lavoir.
