VERSILIA HISTORY

It was in Viareggio in 1828, thanks to the theories of thalassotherapy propagated by the Lucca-based doctor Giuseppe Giannelli, that the first modern beach resort was founded. The first to open were Dori for women and Nereo for men, though these distinctions were eventually scrapped. And even though visitors would go into the water mostly clothed and far from prying eyes, the die was cast. On the heels of Viareggio, resorts opened in Forte dei Marmi, Nizza and the Costa Azzurra, as well as Venice and Rimini. Kursaals were opened, literally “treatment rooms” but they also hosted dancing and casino games. Galileo Chini was called upon to redesign Viareggio, formerly an old village of sailors and ship builders already famous for the speedy Barcobestia, inspired the English The best barque, with its high bow and narrow, extended stern.

Thanks to Chini, the city became the capital of the Liberty style, and still today, the colourful ceramics decorating the rooftops and façades of the East-inspired architecture stand out along the boardwalk that flanks the sandy beach.

The shore and wide avenue were rebuilt after World War II, running for about 30 kilometres and linking Viareggio to the border with Liguria; you can explore it on foot or by bike thanks to a network of paths.

You could perhaps follow in the footsteps of Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924), who would go to Gran Caffè Margh-

Per la tintarella bisognerà aspettare però il primo dopoguerra quando Coco Chanel crea il costume: l’ abbronzatura diventa simbolo di divertimento, di sport e di benessere, soprattutto economico. Così ecco che dopo Viareggio nascono Forte dei Marmi, Nizza e la Costa Azzurra, i lidi di Venezia e Rimini. Vengono aperti i Kursaal, letteralmente sale di cura, ma si balla e si gioca al casinò. A ridisegnare il vecchio borgo di marinai e costruttori di barche, già famosi per i veloci Barcobestia, storpiando l’inglese The best barque, dalla prua alta e la poppa stretta e sfilata, viene chiamato Galileo Chini e Viareggio diventa così la capitale del Liberty. Le colorate ceramiche che decorano tetti e facciate delle orientaleggianti architetture risplendono ancora oggi lungo la passeggiata che costeggia la grande distesa sabbiosa. Un arenile e un viale largo e dritto, ricostruito nel secondo d opoguerra, che unisce, per una trentina di chilometri, Viareggio al confine ligure. E che si puòfare a piedi

It was the interwar years and the 1950s and ‘60s that sanctified the Versilia as the queen of vacations erita from Torre del Lago, where the Lucca-born composer chose to live and compose his most famous operas. Puccini transformed a watchtower on Lake Massaciuccoli, a former swamp that characterized the coast until the 18th century, into a proper villa. Later, in 1930, his friend Pietro Mascagni brought his dream to life: an open-air theatre where his operas could be performed, soon becoming a veritable festival and one that’s still held today.

But it was the interwar years and the 1950s and ‘60s that sanctified the Versilia as the queen of vacation spots for intellectuals, artists, actors and industry magnates. The area was popular with figures like Totò and Beppino de Filippo; the Répaci Literary Award was created under an umbrella at Principe di Piemonte; and the descendants of high

Sarà poi l’amico Pietro Mascagni, nel 1930, a dar vita al suo sogno: un teatro all’aperto per le sue opere. Un festival mai più interrotto.

Ma sono gli anni fra le due guerre e poi i ‘50 e i ‘60, a consacrare la Versilia regina delle vacanze di intellettuali, artisti, attori, magnati dell’industria. La frequentano Totò e Beppino de Filippo,

During the economic boom, the coast was flooded with people and transformed. Home to Chini and Lomellini, Lido di Camaiore became a destination for younger crowds heading to the dance clubs and attending rock and pop music concerts at Bussoladomani. Meanwhile, the middle class began to build second homes along the banks of the reclamation channels that inspired the names of the hamlets around Marina di Pietrasanta, like Focette, Motrone, Tonfano, Fiumetto, a large green lung that once linked Pietrasanta to the sea and divided Florence and Lucca. A popular destination amongst

Forte dei Marmi had already become a buen retiro for many people of internazional jet set world-renowned sculptors nowadays, the town was once a grand ducal enclave in the Lucca area, just like nearby Seravezza, where the Medici built a villa (today a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to oversee the marble quarries and Lucca. Later, however, the pine grove planted during reclamation works to cultivate pine nuts was divided. In 1914, Forte dei Marmi separated from Pietrasanta and became an autonomous municipality, while part of the park was used to form the upper-class neighbourhood of Roma Imperiale. But it wasn’t like this when the Villa della Versiliana (today home to exhibitions and summer theatre performances) was frequented by Gabriele d’Annunzio, who wrote The Rain in the Pinewood here. It would transform quickly enough, though, because Forte dei

Oggi è frequentata, da magnati russi e protagonisti dello star system internazionale; ma la privacy, allora come ora, è garantita da un patto mai scritto e mai tradito.

Forte dei Marmi and Capannina: an essential combination. It’s about much more than fashion, it’s the beginning of a history, because without this splendid evening locale, Forte dei Marmi would not vaunt the unparalleled uniqueness it does today.

Ninety years have passed since Capannina opened, when the area between Viareggio and Massa was little more than an expanse of Mediterranean scrub with a few houses dotting the coast.

The town had its fortress as early as 1788, equipped with a jetty used since 1515 to load marble blocks headed to Florence. You could say the history of this place dates back centuries.

This area was under the control of Pietrasanta until 1914, after which the locals called for autonomy; with a bit of effort, the autonomous municipality was soon established. It was then that Achille Franceschi had a wonderful vision. In a nutshell: he wanted the boardwalk to be as we see it today, and he wanted it to be wide so, as he said, “cars could get here”.

Perhaps most importantly, he wanted this strip of land to offer the services that went on to transform Forte dei Marmi into a tourist destination. He developed plans for a Grand Hotel.

And when everything began to take shape, he even built a cabin made of branches and canvas with two wooden planks to act as a bar. On August

Il forte c’era dal 1788, con il suo pontile ligneo che dal 1515 serviva per caricare i marmi destinati a Firenze. Questione secolare, dunque.

In un territorio che rimase sotto il controllo amministrativo di Pietrasanta fino al 1914. Poi gli indigeni vollero l’autonomia e, un po’ a fatica, nacque il Comune autonomo.

Fu allora che Achille Franceschi ebbe una meravigliosa visione. Volle il viale a mare come siamo abituati a vederlo. Lo volle grande perché, sosteneva, “arriveranno le autovetture”. E soprattutto volle dotare quella striscia di terra battuta di quei servizi che avrebbero fatto la felicità di un certo turismo. Impreziosì quel suo disegno di un Grand hotel. E quando tutto questo prese forma, s’inventò persino un capanno di frasche e tela di sacco, con due assi di legno per tirar su un abbozzo di bar. Quando, il 15 agosto 1929, tutto era pronto, invitò il rango nobiliare dell’epoca.

Guests would sip on cocktails mixed by the expert hands of Nico, eat fish stew and listen to the crackling music playing on the gramophone. Excited by this impossible feat, the Suarez sisters dubbed this non-place “Capannina,” unaware that they had just named the locale that would make Forte dei Marmi’s fortune. Industrialists weren’t even admitted; for them, there was Viareggio. The only exception was Edoardo Agnelli. Soon, the best of society began spending their

evenings at Capannina, transforming Forte dei Marmi into the capital of seaside holiday. Of course, there was golden sand, sailboats and lifeguards who hoisted the cabins, but modernity didn’t touch this little corner of Tuscany. It’s been 90 years, a long love story begun with the Franceschi (after Achille and Nella, their children Guido and Nevio took over) and continued since 1977 under the patient and strong guidance of Gherardo and Carla Guidi. It’s thanks to the Guidi family that the locale still bears the name La Capannina “di Franceschi,” so guests can always remember how it all began. Everyone passed through these doors in its heyday, from Edith Piaf to Armando Trovajoli, Bruno Quirinetta to Ray Sugar Robinson to Perez Prado. But a clear chronology confirms that the Guidi family has expertly taken the reins of this wonderful place, one of the most historic dance clubs in Europe.

That’s because Gherardo Guidi added to this “night-time” history by inviting Ray Charles, Grace Jones and Kid Creole & the Coconuts, bringing a taste of the sea. Capannina has hosted Carnevale parties, the finals of the Premio Satira (every year from 1973 to 2017) and high-end awards like A tavola sulla spiaggia. This vitality is today demonstrated in the book published by Gruppo Editoriale, cultivating the memory of times to come.

Nata con i Franceschi (dopo gli anni di Achille e della signora Nella, venne l’era dei figli Guido e Nevio) e, dal 1977, esaltata dalla paziente e solida guida di Gherardo e Carla Guidi. Sì, perché se passando sul lungomare si legge ancora oggi “La Capannina di Franceschi” è grazie alla famiglia Guidi che non ha mai voluto dimenticare come tutto ebbe inizio.

Ci sono passati tutti da questo locale. Edith Piaf, Armando Trovajoli, Bruno Quirinetta, Ray Sugar Robinson, Perez Prado negli anni dell’affermazione. Ma una chiara cronologia certifica che nessuno come i Guidi ha saputo tenere così a lungo le redini di questa meravigliosa signora che è anche il locale da ballo con più storia di tutta l’Europa. E certo Gherardo Guidi ha saputo impreziosire questa narrazione notturna, scritturando a sua volta Ray Charles, Grace Jones, Kid Creole & the Coconuts, portando Sapore di mare.

Ospitando da gran signore feste di Carnevale, serate finali del Premio Satira (ininterrottamente dal 1973 al 2017), premiazioni di qualità come A tavola sulla spiaggia. Una vitalità che oggi trova documentazione nel volume realizzato da Gruppo Editoriale per coltivare la memoria del tempo che verrà.

A summer in the shade of bright vertical forms which are subtly evocative of femininity rooted in the hardness and strength of marble and bronze.

This summer, in Pietrasanta, is going to be marked by the powerful sculptures designed and forged by Uruguayan artist Pablo Atchugarry, according to the rules of two of the town’s main activities carried on by the local workshops and foundries, that is, the artistic working of marble and bronze. Piazza del Duomo, with its Romanesque-style church dedicated to St. Martin, and the Complex of Sant’Agostino house about thirty works which the artist created in the past fifteen years, a sort of solo exhibition running until September 29 and organized by the lively town of Pietrasanta with the collaboration of Galleria d’Arte Contini, Fondazione Versiliana and Start. Pablo Atchugarry was born in Montevideo in 1954, but is so madly in love with Italy that he now lives and works between Lecco and Manantiales, where ten years ago he started a Foundation in his name which he directly manages with the help of his children (mostly Pietro) for the declared purpose of offering a gathering place open to all forms of art. And now he presents in Versilia, in Marina di Pietrasanta,

Un’estate, questa di Pietrasanta, sostenuta dalle potenti forme ideate e forgiate dall’uruguaiano Pablo Atchugarry secondo i dettami di due delle principali lavorazioni eseguite da botteghe e fonderie della città, ovvero marmo e bronzo. La piazza del Duomo, con la sua chiesa dedicata a san Martino dal chiaro rigore romanico, e il complesso di sant’Agostino accolgono una trentina di opere fortemente materiche che l’artista ha realizzate negli ultimi quindici anni, quasi un’antologia personale aperta fino al 29 settembre e organizzata dal vivace comune di Pietrasanta in collaborazione con la Galleria d’Arte Contini, la Fondazione Versiliana e Start. Instead, grandly standing in Pietrasanta’s Piazza del Duomo, amidst five solemn sculptures, are Naturaleza and Preserve the Dream, both bright white Carrara marble sculptures which are inspired by classical figures and styles, but shaped into abstract and contemporary forms that are meant to evoke the fluid dynamism of the natural elements. The harmony which distinguishes the Uruguayan artist’s aesthetics unfolds in amazingly upward structures, softly modeled in the delicate tones of marble and shining bright with artistry. In July 2002, the artist was awarded the Michelangelo prize in Carrara. In 2003, Atchugarry took part in the 50th Venice Art Biennale with the Soñando la paz work, an installation made up of eight, big-sized white Carrara and grey Bardiglio della Garfagnana marble sculptures.

Today, Atchugarry’s Foundation offers visitors an interesting reflection upon art, whose work is further enriched by the Parque Internacional de Esculturas Monumentales, a park filled with sculptures made by artists from different countries, which brings sculpture and every other art form together and acts as a bridge between art and the artists themselves.

Bagno Bruno in Forte dei Marmi is a small beach club with a restaurant right on the sand, open even in the off season, where local seafood dishes are interpreted by chef and fisherman Daniele Balderi (via Arenile, 1). Also in Forte dei Marmi, the restaurant at Bagno Santa Maria, run by the Pinzaluti family, offers simple but smart dishes for a lunch on the sea or exclusive events.

Must-try dishes on the menu are the excellent clam spaghetti and Fusilli Santa Maria, lime and aromatic herbs grown in the restaurant’s vegetable garden and fresh red mullet (via Arenile, 9).

ABagno CULT IN ‘FORTE’ Silvio. 100 years of the historic beach club I 100 anni dello storico beach club

The history of Bagno Silvio stretches back a century. It was 1919 and Forte dei Marmi was becoming a holiday destination for some aristocratic families and businessmen, like the family of Cavaliere Alfredo Susini, who had a villa on viale Versilia that vaunted 30 metres of private beach. The aristocrat tasked Pietro Dazzi with maintaining the gardens, but the beach was neglected. It was then that Pietro proposed his son Silvio, who began working as a custodian and lifeguard. The beach club opened with only two cabanas reserved for Susini and his guests.

Silvio did everything he could to offer an excellent service. Every year, the number of cabanas increased and the club underwent considerable improvements.

At the end of the 1920s, Susini, taking notice of Slivio’s managerial abilities and running of the beach, gave the club to the young man, who named it after himself.

Since then, the club has always been run by the Dazzi family, passing from father to son up to the present day; the fifth gener-

La storia del Bagno Silvio ha un secolo di vita. Era il 1919, Forte dei Marmi stava diventando meta di villeggiatura di poche famiglie nobili e di imprenditori come la famiglia del Cavaliere Alfredo Susini che aveva una villa in viale Versilia con annessi 30 metri di spiaggia. Il nobile aveva affidato la manutenzione dei giardini a Pietro Dazzi, ma la spiaggia rimaneva non curata.

Fu allora che Pietro propose alla proprietà suo figlio Silvio che iniziò così l’attività di guardiano e poi bagnino. Il bagno aprì con solo due cabine destinate al Cavaliere ed ai suoi ospiti. Silvio si faceva in quattro per offrire un ottimo servizio.

Ogni anno aumentava il numero delle cabine ed il bagno subiva notevoli migliorie. Alla fine degli anni ‘20 il Cavaliere, notando le capacità di gestione e conduzione della spiaggia, decise di cedere il bagno a Silvio che gli diede il suo nome. Da allora è sempre stato condotto dalla famiglia Dazzi, passando di padre in figlio fino ad oggi in cui la gestione è affidata alla quinta gene-

Gianluca manages the family-run restaurant, which has become a landmark for good food in the Versilia, while his wife, Laura, attentively looks after the 36 cabanas and tents, which are almost always rented by the same families every year. There is even someone celebrating their 66th year of constant and loyal attendance! The setting is very discreet.

The Dazzi family doesn’t give in to gossip. So much so that the images “stolen” by friends are the only proof of the summers spent at Bagno Silvio. Some say to have seen celebrities under the tents

Tuscany has been known for its great red wines since time immemorial, but this has not always been the case. For most of the Middle Ages, Tuscany’s most prestigious wine was almost exclusively represented by Vernaccia di San Gimignano, which was also the very first DOC Italian wine to obtain this important designation as early as 1966. Another of Tuscany’s historic white winegrowing areas is Pomino, since the days of Cosimo III de’ Medici, although Chardonnay grapes were not grown there yet. In more recent years, new producers have been joining the winemaking scene, often small to medium-sized, independent of the wine appellations but known for introducing international varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, in suitable zones, following in-depth studies on the terroirs. Therefore, there are a number of top-quality wineries, based in Greve in Chianti, Pontassieve, Montecarlo and in the Maremma area (from Bolgheri to Capalbio), which produce excellent white wines. Instead, the most widely-grown white grape variety along the Coast and on the islands is Vermentino.

La Toscana, come riconosciuto da tempi immemorabili, è terra di grandi vini rossi, ma non è sempre stato così. Durante il Medioevo il vino di prestigio in Toscana si identificava proprio con un bianco, la Vernaccia di San Gimignano, che è stata, fra l’altro, la prima denominazione di origine controllata italiana a essere riconosciuta nel 1966. Un’altra zona storica per i bianchi toscani è quella di Pomino, già eletta come vocata dai tempi di Cosimo III de’ Medici, anche se all’epoca non era ancora presente lo Chardonnay.

Negli ultimi anni si sono poi affacciate nuove realtà, spesso di dimensioni medio-piccole e slegate dalle denominazioni, che a seguito di studi approfonditi sui terroir hanno portano vitigni internazionali - Chardonnay e Pinot grigio - in zone ad essi congeniali. In questa dinamica si inseriscono eccellenze produttuive con sede da Greve in Chianti a Pontassieve, da Montecarlo alla Maremma (da Bolgheri a Capalbio).

Lungo la Costa e sulle Isole il principe dei bianchi è invece il Vermentino.

When the sun goes down, it turns into one of the most exclusive clubs of Versilia, where you can prolong your cocktail experience until the wee hours of the night (Via Lungomare Roma, 2). The second is the Nikki Beach: vibrant atmosphere, fantastic Mojitos, selected champagnes and Proseccos as well as chilled Rosé wines. The beach club’s Rosé Sarturdays in fact celebrate pink wines. The voice of Katia Ricciarelli will inaugurate the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago on July 6; this year’s edition is set to host six of Puccini’s operas and will run from July 12 to August 24. In Florence, the legend of dance Roberto Bolle and Friends returns for the Musart Festival, on stage in piazza Santissima Annunziata on July 13. The Cavea at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is also set to re-open, on the rooftop of the theatre, vaunting about a dozen concerts, including Franz Ferdinand on July 11 and Woody Allen on July 30, performing the clarinet with his Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band.
