Back at the time of the passage from the 16th to the 17th century, not even the great Michelangelo was capable of foreseeing that, in the end, the sea would attract more people than “his” mountains, the candid Apuan mountains where he quarried the blocks of marble that encompassed the forms he had in mind. He just had to free them of the superfluous material. This narrow strip of land between the Apuan Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea is known as Versilia. Known to the Romans and crossed through by their Aurelia route, Versilia became a political reality as a consequence of a papal arbitration by Leo X (de’ Medici). In 1513 he determined annexation of the Capitanata zone of Pietrasanta and adjacent zones (meaning Forte dei Marmi and internal areas, Seravezza and Stazzema) to the existing Medici lands. By extension and over time, the ancient Campus Maior, (that is, Camaiore), Viareggio and the only satellite of the latter municipality, that is Torre del Lago, also became territories of Versilia, to create a strip almost 30 kilometers long, full of history and adventure. It all began at the start of the 19th century when the first beach establishment was fitted out on the coast facing Pietrasanta. The suc-
Forse neanche il grande Michelangelo, tra il XV e il XVI secolo, ebbe la capacità di prevedere che, alla fine, sarebbe stato più il mare ad attrarre il popolo rispetto alle “sue montagne”, le candide Apuane dalle quale cavava i blocchi di marmo entro cui già c’erano le forme che aveva in mente: basta solo liberarle dalla materia superflua. Quella stretta striscia di terra compresa (e compressa) tra le Apuane e il mar Tirreno è la Versilia. Nota già in epoca romana, e attraversata dalla via Aurelia, la Versilia “nasce” politicamente per effetto di un lodo di Papa Leone X (papa Medici) che nel 1513 sancì che alle terre medicee già esistenti fossero annessi il Capitanato di Pietrasanta e le terre limitrofe (cioè Forte dei Marmi e le zone più interne, Seravezza e Stazzema). Per estensione, col tempo hanno finito per diventare terre versiliesi anche l’antica Campus Maior, (Camaiore), Viareggio e l’unica frazione di quest’ultimo comune, Torre del Lago, per un totale di quasi 30 chilometri di terra ricchi di storia e di fascino. A cominciare dall’inizio del XIX secolo quando sulla spiaggia antistante Pietrasanta venne realizzato il primo stabilimento balneare. Il successo dell’iniziativa fu

A Viareggio’s beach club in the early 1900s cess of the initiative was so overwhelming that as early as 1822 it was already necessary to tighten up the bathing regulations. At the time, these provided for the separation of men and women. Five years later, in 1827, the first municipal establishment charging an admission fee began operations and the Versilia vacation haven was born. The fortune of this territory, at the time patronized by the aristocracy of Lucca and the birthplace of personalities such as Giosuè Carducci and Eugenio Barsanti, soon allowed it to establish strong bonds with the literary and artistic trends of the period in Italy and abroad. This brought Percy Bysshe Shelley to Versilia, but also

Ecco che in Versilia approdano Percy Busshe Shelley, ma anche Rainer Maria Rilke e Gabriele D’Annun-

The Franceschi family owner of La Capannina in Forte dei Marmi Rainer Maria Rilke and Gabriele D’Annunzio, who often stayed in the villa now known as “La Versiliana” writing famous verses. Among the artists, the presence of Telemaco Signorini, Galileo Chini, Plinio Nomellini, Primo Conti and Lorenzo Viani can hardly be overlooked. Not to mention that in Forte dei Marmi it was possible to encounter Maccari, Pea, Carrà, Papini, Longhi and Montale, with the presence of Thomas Mann in the role of guest. Even Luigi Pirandello and Eleonora Duse appeared in Torre del Lago just as Giacomo Puccini’s dreams would take form on the stave. The decision of a few great families of capitalists of the North – such as

This led to the birth of the large, modern bathing establishments. The architects unleashed their creativity, the vacation industry took shape and in Versilia it was all interlaced with exclusive social life. It was no accident that film stars such as Renato Salvatori and Stefania Sandrelli were launched here but, above all, that here Italian style live entertainment was born thanks to a young impresario, Sergio Bernar-

The Platters at La Bussola of a tight-knit network of yearlong initiatives that reach an admirable climax in the summer. The cultural and theatrical appointments of the Versiliana are a mainstay and capture the public’s attention for two months at Marina di Pietrasanta. Then there’s the Carnival of Viareggio - even with all the ups and downs, it manages to attract those who love traditions. The Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, the art exhibitions in Pietrasanta (now a recognized Italian and international showplace for the many artists who choose the “little Athens” to exhibit their work) and many other initiatives contribute to the verve of Versilia. For the curious who want to look

In a memorable period of two decades, from 1955 to 1975, at the “Bussola” tent theater of Focette, he managed to bring the greatest Italian and international artists together: Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong and Chet Baker, Carosone and Buscaglione, Sophia Loren and Giorgio Gaber, Benny Goodman and Charles Aznavour, Fabrizio De André and Celentano. And, of course, Mina who gave her last live concert on 23 August 1978 in Bernardini’s “Bussoladomani” tent. Those were epic years, that cannot be repeated. Since then, the social whirlwind has not overpowered culture, which remains a strong point in Versilia by means

The singer and dancer Jack Lacayenne, the stage name of Alberto Longoni further, there is also the “other” Versilia, the alternative to the sweet and simple vacation of sunbathing on the “noble” sand of Forte dei Marmi or the dunes of Marina di Torre del Lago. There are, for example, the close links of some places in Versilia with history, such as Sant’Anna di Stazzema where, in 1944, Nazi troops carried out one of the bloodiest mass murders of WWII; or Gombitelli, a very small settlement of Camaiore, where the inhabitants spoke a very particular Gallo-Romance dialect until the 1960’s. This is also Versilia, a territory full of surprises and links with the past. After a few years of stagnation, the revival will take its cue from fair and proactive management of the future.

And they’ve been more or less the same for years. Boring? Absolutely the opposite – it’s very reassuring to know that even after a sojourn on the other side of the world, you can come back and find your old friends here for a cocktail at sunset. As with all rituals worthy of the name, those of Versilia also have their temples – the beach clubs. Side by side, in a line from Viareggio to Cinquale interrupted only by the occasional stretch of public beach, they are a small piece of the personal history of families who have been coming here for decades. We’re going to tell you about the cult beaches, those

Bagno Balena - Viareggio with a long history or famous names among their aficionados, well aware that some of our readers will be sad to see that the lido of their adolescence, their first beach party and their first romance has not been mentioned. Let’s start at the storied Bagno Balena in Viareggio, perhaps the oldest in Italy. Established in the late 1920’s, Bagno Balena was built entirely of wood, with a large archway marking the main entry to the lido. The arch is still there, but inside the concept has moved with the times to include a swimming pool, gym, spa and restaurant as well as the traditional beach tents and umbrellas. Also in Viareggio is Bagno Pinocchio: bought by a far-sighted Prato businessman in 1954, he named it Pinocchio to please his three children. The beach club is still owned and managed by

Beach Club the same family, and combines tradition and style like few others in Versilia. Chef of the excellent restaurant is Sabina, the founder’s granddaughter. Bagno Le Gazzelle in Marina di Pietrasanta is a small elite club where everyone knows everyone. No umbrellas, just tents placed 4 metres apart, because privacy is even more important where everyone is friends! This too is a family-run business. Bought by Anna and Luciano in 1951, today it is run by the second generation, Paola, Gianna and Francesca. In the same area we also find Bagno Texas – recently completely renovated, it has 60 tents on 3,500 sq.m. of fine sand and 60 cabanas with private toilet and shower and a safe. If you walk along the seashore, you will recognize Bagno Twiga by the photographers stationed nearby on the lookout for celebrities. Without doubt one of the more glamorous beaches, it is a snow-white, luxurious oasis. Its club has been a landmark on the Versilia nightlife scene for years. A few metres further on is Bagno Piero, where understatement is the order of the day, making it the buen retiro of many businessmen and big names in politics and finance who come to Versilia. Every now and then its chic and extremely reserved clients treat themselves to a plate of spaghetti with clams

The same understated luxury can be found at Bagno America, where Paolo and Marcella, who opened it in the early ‘Seventies, are still there to welcome their guests. Today as in the past, a cabana houses the little bar. Bagno Vittoria is a like a living room overlooking the sea, or rather, at one with the sea. A jaunt around Elba Island in search of the best beaches Periplo dell’Elba alla scoperta delle spiagge più belle
Elba has almost 150 kilometers of coastline with beaches hidden in secret coves and sands that vary from brilliant white to shades of gray or pink. Elba, just 10 km from the coast of Tuscany, is a green oasis dominated, on the west, by Mount Capanne (1019 meters) and, on the east, by the hills of Mount Calamita. It is an ideal destination if you love water sports - sailing, surfing, diving and underwater fishing - but also if your thing is trekking, free climbing or mountain biking up the tracks that lead to medieval hamlets clinging to rock ledges over the sea. Napoleone Bonaparte spent ten months in exile on Elba in 1814. There are traces of him just about everywhere, particularly in his elegant neoclassical residences, Villa dei Mulini and Villa San Martino, both open to visitors (hours: 8.30 am to

6 pm). The ferries from Piombino land at Portoferraio, worth a visit and a stop. Some attractions are the Torre del Martello (tower), the city walls, Via della Regina to the Voltone tunnel. Leaving Portoferraio to the west, you will encounter these beaches: beach of Ghiaie, then beach of Sansone a little further on (with its remarkably transparent waters) and, after rounding Cape d’Enfola, the striking settings of the Viticcio, Biodola and Procchio bays. The latter is truly extraordinary: with the strand surrounded by vineyards, it is one of the most enchanting panoramas on the island. Continue on in the direction of Marciana Marina, one of the rare ancient settlements at the seaside. There is a gondola cableway from here to the top of Mount Capanne. In less than a quarter of an hour, you can be seated on the most panoramic bar terrace on the island. If you are looking for other marine adventures, you may wish to go down to Capo Sant’Andrea. This picturesque little port is famous for its diving courses. There are also spectacular beaches on the southern coast such as Fetovaia or those in the gulfs of Marina di Campo (lively and trendy), Lacona (one of the largest on Elba with dunes of very fine sand and, off shore seabeds of rock and posidonia, ideal for scuba diving) and Stella. Continuing to the east, you will encounter the Capoliveri promontory. At the point, there is an ancient village

Usciti da Portoferraio, a ovest, si raggiunge la spiaggia delle Ghiaie, poco più avanti la spiaggia di Sansone (e le sue imperdibili acque trasparenti) per poi arrivare, appena passato Capo d’Enfola, agli scenografici golfi di Viticcio, della Biodola e di Procchio. Quest’ultimo è straordinario, con il lido incorniciato dai vigneti, uno dei paesaggi più suggestivi dell’isola. Si prosegue verso Marciana Marina, uno dei rari borghi antichi che si trovano in riva al mare da qui una cabinovia porta in cima al Monte Capanne e in meno di 15 minuti si è sulla terrazza del bar più panoramico dell’isola. Se si cercano altre avventure marine si può scendere fino a Capo Sant’Andrea, che oltre al pittoresco porticciolo è famosa per i corsi di diving. Ma ci sono spiagge spettacolari anche nel lato sud, come quella di Fetovaia e quelle dei golfi di Marina di Campo (vitale e mondana), Lacona (una delle più grandi dell’Elba con dune di sabbia finissima e, al largo, fondali di roccia e posidonia, ideali per le immersioni) e Stella. Proseguendo verso est il promontorio di Capoliveri, in fondo al quale sorge l’antico borgo raccolto intorno a una bellissima piazzetta, ha un impareggiabile panorama. Ai suoi piedi si stendono le spiagge di Margidore,

with a lovely little piazza at the center and an unequaled panorama. The beaches of Margidore (ample and not crowded), Zuccale, Barabarca, Pareti, and Cala dell’Innamorata are spread out below. The main inlet on the eastern coast is Porto Azzurro, considered the showplace of Elba. Social events and nightlife are concentrated in Piazza Matteotti, overlooking the sea. The beach of Cala Seregola is near Rio Marina in the northeastern corner. This beach is part of the protected Parco Minerario (Mining Park), open to the public from 8am to 9pm. A special note: after lying down on the beach, you may well find yourself dusted with shiny particles of hematite because the shoreline is composed of light-colored gravel and red and black ferrous sand. The last segment of the island, between Cavo, Rio Marino and Rio nell’Elba, other than the mines, is full of Mediterranean scrub and woods. The unique flora of the archipelago, which characterizes the aromatic honey, can be admired in the Orto dei Semplici all’Eremo di Santa Caterina botanical gardens on Mount Serra, accessible on foot from Rio nell’Elba (visits by appointment, tel. + 39 340 0056510, hours: 3pm - 8pm). The gardens were created in collaboration with the University of Pisa to study the biodiversity of the island species. The best time to capture the colors and perfumes is between May (when the rose garden is opened only for the duration of blooming) and September.

La spiaggia rientra nel territorio tutelato dal Parco Minerario ed è aperta al pubblico dalle 8 alle 21. Una particolarità: una volta stesi sul bagnasciuga, è facile trovarsi cosparsi di minuscole particelle lucenti di ematite, dato che il litorale è composto da ghiaia chiara e sabbia ferrifera rossa e nera. L’ultimo spicchio d’isola tra Cavo, Rio Marina e Rio nell’Elba, oltre alle miniere, è ricco di macchia mediterranea e di bosco. L’unicità della flora dell’arcipelago, che si ritrova nel sapore del miele, si ammira nell’Orto dei Semplici all’Eremo di Santa Caterina, sul Monte Serra, raggiungibile a piedi da Rio nell’Elba (visite su appuntamento, ph. + 39 340 0056510, orario: 15-20). L’orto è nato in collaborazione con l’Università di Pisa, per studiare la biodiversità delle specie isolane. Il momento migliore per coglierne colori e profumi è tra maggio (quando apre il roseto solo per il tempo della fioritura) e settembre.

This year, the Susanna Orlando Gallery (Via Stagio Stagi 12) is celebrating 40 years in the art world. The celebrations began with the inauguration of the CANTO ritrovato exhibition by Piero Pizzi Cannella and the Milestone exhibition, curated by Valerio Dehò in

Finally, on August 27th the gallery will present a solo exhibition by Lorenzo Lazzeri. Flora Bigai Contemporary Art was founded in Pietrasanta in 1998 in a historic palace from the 18th century (Via Garibaldi 37). After a decade of experience in Venice that gave the gallery its international profile, its work continues with passion with exhibitions from artists from around the world. A distinctive feature of the gallery’s programming is the attention given to Pop Art: The new exhibition: Pop. Yesterday and Now, curated by Luca Beatrice will be inaugurated on July 2nd, and will continue until September 12th. The MARCOROSSI artecontemporanea, Pietrasanta is part of the group of art galleries that over the years has become one of the reference points for contemporary art in Italy. Founded under the name Spirale Arte in 1994, today it is divided across 4 locations (in addition to Pietrasanta, in Milan, Verona and Turin). Each gallery has a professional team of staff and is coordinated by the founder Marco Rossi, an expert in contemporary art with over thirty years if experience. From July 9th to August 15th, Paolo Ventura presents Via Emilia + 1. The Accesso Galleria (Via del Marzocco, 68/70) will be hosting the WA exhibition by Vitaliano until July 30th. The exhibition is offered to the viewer as a single, total experience: brushes, work tables and books are present in the gallery space, along with tools and traces of the atmosphere of the artist’s studio. E non solo Marble, bronze and steel: these are the elements of the Shining Rock exhibition by Helidon Xhixha for the summer of 2016 in Pietrasanta. The exhibition sets two important records. First, the sculptures of Helidon, thanks to the municipalities of Forte dei Marmi and Camaiore, have been placed in Pietrasanta between Piazza Duomo, the S. Agostino complex and the church, Piazza Matteotti facing Palazzo Comunale [the city hall], the traffic circle at the pier of Marina di Pietrasanta and the panoramic terrace of Capezzano Monte; in Forte dei Marmi on Piazza Garibaldi, facing the Fortino; and in Lido di Camaiore, on the Bellavista Vittoria pier. This is an

And it is also the first time that the Italian-Albanese artist has worked with marble and bronze. The spectacular “rocks” of polished steel dialogue with the monumental works created specifically of the Altissimo white marble and the bronze, creating continuity with the links with enterprises, artisans and foundries of the territory. Here’s a gourmet itinerary from south to north in Versilia to discover where you can savor the best seafood dishes this summer among Michelin stars, historic places and new entries. Our tour starts in Viareggio where the only Michelin twostar establishment along the whole coast is to be found. This is the Piccolo Principe restaurant (1), in the historic and fascinating setting of the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte in Piazza Giacomo Puccini, offering a sophisticated cuisine accompanied by an outstanding wine list. The experience is heightened by the breathtaking views toward the sea and the Apuan Alps from the splendid dining room on the fifth story of the hotel. Another historic name is Romano (Via Mazzini no. 122), a famous restaurant celebrating fifty years of activity this year. With one Michelin star, the oldest in Versilia, it is the realm of Romano Franceschini and his wife Franca, maintaining their success today with the assistance of their two children as well. The menu includes crustaceans, mollusks, red mullets, soles and stuffed squid, homemade pasta dishes and main dishes that unite flavors from the sea and dry land (2). There’s a new star in Viareggio this year: the Lunasia restaurant, recently opened on the top floor of Hotel Plaza e de Russie (Piazza Massimo d’Azeglio). The terrace offers a breathtaking panorama that reaches the La Spezia gulf and the gourmet kitchen is commanded by Chef Luca Landi, a Tuscan through and through who was
Un itinerario gourmet da nord a sud della Versilia, per scoprire tra ristoranti stelle Michelin, nomi storici e new entries dove poter gustare i migliori piatti di pesce quest’estate. Il nostro viaggio inizia a Viareggio, dove si trova l’unico due stelle Michelin di tutta la costa: siamo nella cornice storica e suggestiva del Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte in piazza Giacomo Puccini, al ristorante Piccolo Principe (1), cucina ricercata e valorizzata da una notevola carta dei vini, resa ancora più speciale dalla vista mozzafiato sul mare e sulle Alpi Apuane che offre la splendida sala al quinto piano dell’hotel. Un nome storico quello di Romano (via Mazzini 122), celebre ristorante che festeggia quest’anno 50 anni di attività: stella Michelin - la più antica della Versilia -, è il regno di Romano Franceschini e sua moglie Franca, che oggi portano avanti con successo insieme ai due figli, e vede protagonisti del menu crostacei, molluschi, triglie, sogliole e calamaretti ripieni, insieme a primi fatti in casa e secondi piatti che fondono sapori di mare con quelli di terra (2). Nuova stella per Viareggio con il ristorante Lunasia, sbarcato quest’anno all’ultimo piano dell’Hotel Plaza e de Russie (piazza Massimo d’Azeglio): terrazza con panorama mozzafiato che spazia fino al golfo di La Spezia, cucina gourmet firmata dallo Chef Luca Landi, toscano doc, nato a Bagni di Lucca e viareggino d’adozione (3). born in Bagni di Lucca and is now an adopted citizen of Viareggio (3). Moving on toward Forte dei Marmi, our first stop is the La Magnolia restaurant of Hotel Byron (Viale E. Morin no. 46), the realm of Michelin star Chef Cristoforo Trapani. Recipes are based on the freshest ingredients from local producers, traditional specialties of the territory and creative new dishes (4). Another Michelin star is assigned to Lorenzo (Via Giosuè Carducci no. 61): the owner Lorenzo Viani and his daughter Chiara have succeeded over time in transforming their trattoria into a very refined restaurant (5). A precious star also distinguishes Bistrot (Via della Repubblica no. 14), an inn with two wood-fired ovens and an open kitchen, elegant dining rooms with vaguely colonial decor and a cool outdoor summer serving area with genteel jazz music (6). One of the favorite restaurants of habitués who go beyond the fashionable is L’Orsa Maggiore (7). Today, it presents a wide-ranging and innovative gastronomic project at the behest of the owners, the same as the historic Hotel Franceschi/ Villa Mimosa residence, and is guided by the Michelin star chef of the Pomiroeu di Seregno, Giancarlo Morelli, and by executive Chef Federico Veronesi. Open year round, it is the only restaurant with a beachfront in Forte dei Marmi and presents a menu with original interpretations of genuine marine flavors. The Maitò (8), established in the 1960’s on the seaside boulevard (Viale Repubblica no. 9), was a

Da sempre uno dei ristoranti preferiti di chi frequenta la Versilia aldilà delle mode, L’Orsa Maggiore (7) si presenta oggi con un progetto gastronomico di grande respiro ed innovazione, fortemente voluto dalla proprietà – la stessa della storica casa Hotel Franceschi/Villa Mimosa - e guidato da Giancarlo Morelli, chef stellato del Pomiroeu di Seregno, e dall’executive chef Federico Veronesi. Aperto tutto l’anno, è l’unico ristorante con spiaggia al Forte e propone un menu che si ispira al mare interpretando i suoi sapori in modo originale. The menu offers seafood but also meat dishes, pizzas and flat breads from the wood-fired oven, fresh pasta dishes and homemade sweets. Etiquette and high society, culture and elegance in the pursuit of relaxation on the beach: this is the ambience at Bagno Marechiaro (9), the ideal destination for a cocktail after a day on the beach, or for a romantic supper. Moving off from Forte dei Marmi, try Franco Mare (10) in Marina di Pietrasanta. The names to remember in Pietrasanta are the Enoteca Marcucci (Via Garibaldi no. 40), over 3000 wines on the list (11) and the Filippo restaurant (Via Stagio Stagi no. 22), which also offers bed & breakfast accommodations (12).

Visitors to Forte dei Marmi should not miss the opportunity to relax in the Hotel Byron’s enchanting garden and enjoy cuisine of great finesse at La Magnolia, an elegant poolside restaurant and one of Versilia’s favourite meeting places. Since last year, the kitchen has been led by 28 year old Cristoforo Trapani, who after working under award winning chefs such as Heinz Beck and Antonino Cannavacciuolo, has brought all the warmth of his native Sorrento to Versilia, reconfirming the restaurant’s Michelin star in a very short time. As talented as he is young, Cristoforo masterfully carries on La Magnolia’s creative traditions, while at the same time adding his own personal touch. “I like to define my cooking as Tuscan-Campania fusion”, he says, “the perfect marriage of two regions united by the same sea”. The result is a menu that gives full expression to the finest raw ingredients. “Rather than zero kilometres, I’m interested in 600 kilometres, – continued Cristoforo Trapani – those to my home town where I get supplies of local products that I then enhance in combination with equally unique Tuscan ingredients”. The menu, which changes with the seasons and according to the chef’s inspiration, includes cult dishes such as cacciucco and “Mescaf-

Dallo scorso anno, la cucina è il regno dello chef sorrentino Cristoforo Trapani, classe 1988, che dopo aver lavorato a fianco di grandi maestri stellati e pluristellati, come Heinz Beck e Antonino Cannavacciuolo, ha portato in Versilia tutta la solarità della Campania, riconfermando in pochissimo tempo la stella Michelin del ristorante. Tanto giovane quanto talentuoso, Cristoforo prosegue in maniera magistrale la tradizione creativa de La Magnolia, aggiungendo però il suo tocco personale. “Amo definire la mia cucina, fusion tosco-campana” ci racconta lo chef - “la perfetta unione di due terre, unite dallo stesso mare, di cui cerco di restituire tutta la ricchezza”. Il risultato è un menu che è massima espressione di materie prime straordinarie: “più che il km 0, a me interessa il km 600 - continua Cristoforo Trapani - quello di casa mia, da dove ricevo i prodotti che poi esalto unendoli con quelli altrettanto unici della Toscana”. Tra le proposte, profondamente legate alla stagionalità e alle ispirazioni dello chef, non mancano piatti cult, come il cacciucco e la pasta “Mesca-

From this year, guests can enjoy dining in the intimate atmosphere of an enchanting pool deck, cooled by a light sea breeze and surrounded by the scents from the garden. Further new additions for 2016 are the pizza oven in the BBQ area, and the “all pasta” tasting menu consisting of 5 surprise dishes, from the antipasto to dessert, all based on fresh and dried pasta. There is also an excellent list of carefully chosen wines.

In the region of the big reds, wineries are embarking on the complete production of sparkling wines with major results. Here are some of the most exciting ones selected by the AIS (Italian Sommelier Association). In the province of Pisa La Regola, produces a very interesting classic method sparkling wine. In the same province in San Miniato, a sparkling wine is produced entirely with Trebbiano grapes, re-fermented in the bottle and aged on the lees for not less than 18 months. The wine is called L’Erede and the winery is Ivana Cupelli. In the province of Siena an aristocratic bubbly is made bearing the name of the winery, Fèlsina. It is a classic method with a base of Sangiovese up to 60%, Pinot Noir 20% and Chardonnay for the remaining part. It is fermented for twenty-two months in the bottle in the dark fascinating Castelnuovo Berardenga cellars. In Arezzo we find the Baracchi Winery. For several years it has also been producing two successful Classic method vintages, a Brut made entirely with Trebbiano and a captivating rosé made with Sangiovese. In the Cecina di Larciano and Montalbano territories in the province of Pistoia, we find an unmeasured classic method sparkling wine, 100% Chardonnay grapes, a long aging period on the lees, at least 36 months, and a proper aging in the bottle after that. Munitevi di carta e penna e appuntatevi le più interessanti secondo AIS Toscana. In provincia di Pisa La Regola fa uno spumante metodo classico di grande interesse. Nella vicina San Miniato segnaliamo uno spumante prodotto con uve trebbiano toscano, anche questo rifermentato in bottiglia e maturato sui lieviti per non meno di 18 mesi. Il vino si chiama L’Erede e l’azienda è Ivana Cupelli. In provincia di Siena si è sperimentata una aristocratica bollicina: Fèlsina è un metodo classico a base di Sangiovese al 60%, Pinot Nero al 20% e Chardonnay. L’azienda è la Fattoria Montellori dal mercato considerata un’eccellenza già da molti anni. Nella piccola Doc Montecarlo incontriamo la Tenuta del Buonamico. Segnaliamo la loro première cuvée dal nome Particolare

ria Montellori, already on the market for some years, it is considered an excellent product. In the small DOC Montecarlo, we encounter Tenuta del Buonamico. We mention their première cuvée named Particolare Inedito a refined and elegant product, great value for money. In Radda in Chianti Colle Bereto produces Colle B, a classic method sparkling rosé using Pinot Noir grapes aged 30 months on the lees. In San Gimignano, at Falchini, special attention is given to Chardonnay and Vernaccia grapes in the vineyards of the Casale and the Pinot Noir for their classic method. After the first fermentation, it goes into the bottle to age for many months. In the Elba island, Tenuta Le Ripalte, Piermario Meletti Cavallari has created the spumante Le Ripalte Brut Rosé with the Charmat method. In the province of Grosseto and more specifically in the DOC Maremma Toscana, the Bruni winery has created a sparkling Vermentino within the denomination, enhancing the most important white grape in the area, Vermentino. In Massa, the Calevro has vineyards in the DOC Candia and again here, Vermentino and Malvasia grapes are used for an interesting Charmat method sparkling wine. We could get lost in all the new production in the vast province of Florence, so we will only mention the classic method of Castello del Trebbio and the Leonia of Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi, a Pomino Rosé wine, a niche classic method production from the best pinot noir grapes of Pomino.

In provincia di Firenze ci potremmo perdere nelle nuove sperimentazioni e allora citiamo il metodo classico del Castello del Trebbio e il Leonia dei Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi un Pomino Rosé, una produzione di nicchia di un metodo classico dai migliori Pinot Noir di Pomino, impiantati nel 1855 dall’audace Leonia, di ritorno da una lunga esperienza nelle vicinanze dello Champagne, progetto presentato di recente per onorare la trisavola della nobile casata.

A Forte dei Marmi, la XXIV edizione di ‘A tavola sulla spiaggia’ A tavola sulla spiaggia, the summer event that exalts good food and wine, will be back once again this year on the exclusive beaches of Forte dei Marmi. The heart of this appointment, as every year, are the inborn charm and gastronomic talent of rigorously non-professional contestants, united by their passion for cooking. The competition, now in its 24th year, will take place on Thursday 25 August, when contestants will submit their dish and wine combinations to the two juries, and Friday 26 August, when the ceremony to proclaim the winner will take place. Once again this year the Organization Committee, chaired by Gianni Mercatali, has proposed the tried and true theme of recovery, the recycling kitchen, the sublime art of preparing delicious and healthy dishes without throwing anything away. The jury members include journalists, opinion leaders, wine producers and restaurant owners for a total of 13 Michelin stars. The catering service will be provided by Guido Guidi Ricevimenti. In less than three hours, they and their squad will serve 40 jurors twelve gastronomic proposals, changing 480 plates, and twelve wines, changing 480 wine goblets.

Or maybe a route conceived by expert mountain bikers? Versilia has a solution for every need a biker can have -amateur, first-category and non-professional bikers. This is something that makes the Versilia one of the favorite destinations among bikers from all over Italy, including professional bikers who come here to do some training before the start of the competitive season.But let’s proceed from generalities to specifics to discover the best tracks for each of these categories. The first, for mountain and city bikes, is a flat ring road along the sea that links all the main towns in the Versilia. A 22-kilometer road that starts at the “Fausto Coppi” cycling lane in Viareggio, goes through Lido di Camaiore, Forte dei Marmi and the cycling lane after the road sign at the beginning of the province of Massa to Marina di Massa, where bikers will start making their way back to the start. Another more challenging route is the one that goes from Pietrasanta to S. Anna of Stazzema:
