Princes Boncompagni Ludovisi, the only living members of a family that claims a direct lineage from a Pope. That is because before Ugo Boncompagni, who originally came from Bologna, became Pope Gregory XIII, he had a natural son, Giacomo, from whom descended this family. His descendants were then given the title of Princes of Piombino, which was inherited by the Ludovisi noble family. Pope Boncompagni is remembered for having ordered the advancement of the calendar, which was called, after him, the Gregorian calendar. The Florentine branch of the Boncompagni Ludovisi Princes has also inherited the names of the great families Rondinelli and Vitelli from Florence and Umbria: then the great-great-grandmother of the contemporary Florentine members of the family, Isabella Rondinelli Vitelli left her name and properties to the Boncompagnis. Her son Paolo moved to Florence. He married Stephanie Bourbon del Monte, a direct descendant of famous Princess Louise of Hesse who had been a close friend of Marie Antoinette and vainly tried to save the unlucky French Queen from the Terror in the French Revolution. She had also been a great friend of Schiller and Goethe and Napoleon himself, although he was not particularly fond for the German people, said that she was worth to be Queen. Stephanie used to live in Palazzo Peruzzi in Borgo dei Greci, which was purchased by her father Guidobaldo at the end of the19th century and which remained property of the family till the half of the 20th Century. The current representatives of the family, Prince Andrea and his wife Laura Mazzuoli, have always lived in Florence since they got married, also because Andrea’s mother had inherited the Dragomanni SalvadoriPalace in Via Guicciardini, which miracously survived the bombing of the Second World War, thanks to its being so near the Vasari Corridor. The Boncompagnis have always loved Florence; Laura is from Rome but has studied at Poggio Imperiale. Their only son Francesco was born in Florence, where he has always lived, and even though he uses to go to Umbria every week for work, he lives in a house which directly faces Piazza Santa Maria Novella, where the Rondinelli Palace once stood. Infatti Ugo Boncompagni, bolognese di nascita è salito al Soglio pontificio col nome di Gregorio XIII, prima di prendere i voti ebbe un figlio naturale Giacomo, da cui discende tutta la famiglia. In seguito fu conferito ai suoi discendenti il titolo di principe di Piombino, per eredità dei principi Ludovisi. Papa Boncompagni è famoso per la riforma del calendario, che da lui prende il nome di Gregoriano. Il ramo fiorentino dei principi Boncompagni Ludovisi ha avuto inoltre anche l’eredità delle due grandi stirpi fiorentine ed umbre dei Rondinelli Vitelli, infatti la trisnonna degli attuali rappresentanti della famiglia a Firenze, Isabella Rondinelli Vitelli portò il nome e delle proprietà ai Boncomagni. Suo figlio Paolo si trasferì a Firenze. Sposò Stephanie Bourbon del Monte, discendente diretta della celebre principessa Luisa d’Assia, grande amica di Maria Antonietta e che cercò invano di salvare l’infelice sovrana francese dagli orrori della rivoluzione, Amica e protettrice di Schiller e di Goethe, fece rappresentare le loro opere. Lo stesso Napoleone, che pur non amava i tedeschi, diceva di lei che era degna di essere regina. Stephanie viveva a Firenze a Palazzo Peruzzi in borgo dei Greci che suo padre Guidobaldo aveva acquistato alla fine dell’ottocento ed è stato della famiglia fino agli anni cinquanta del 900. Gli attuali rappresentanti della famiglia, il principe Andrea e la moglie Laura Mazzuoli, dopo il matrimonio sono sempre stati a Firenze, anche perchè la madre di lui aveva avuto in eredità il palazzo Dragomanni Salvadori in via Guicciardini, che si è salvato miracolosamente dai bombardamenti della seconda guerra mondiale per la sua vicinanza col corridoio vasariano. I Boncompagni hanno sempre amato Firenze; Laura che è romana di famiglia ha però studiato al Poggio Imperiale. Il loro unico figlio Francesco è nato e sempre vissuto qui, e nonostante vada spesso in Umbria per lavoro, la sua residenza è una casa affacciata sulla piazza Santa Maria Novella, dove era il palazzo Rondinelli. Francesco ha sposato Maria Giovanna Porro da cui ha avuto due splendine bambine, Sibilla e Stephanie.
