Second round of fairs and many questions still to be answered. After a fairly

classic February, the summer has arrived and will bring so many new things. Let’s start with Blossom Première Vision that will join Prima Milano Unica on the podium of the July pre-collections, extending the companies’ opportunities to reach their customers before the two September fairs. Rigorous picking in Paris, numbers on the rise in Milan and bated breath for the response from the market. If, until six months ago, we would have referred to the September fairs as “classics”, now we must speak of new things because Milano Unica will be moving to Rho, in much roomier spaces than Portello but shared with other shows of the fashion chain, among accessories and clothing.

As always, Showcase takes its cues from the words of the people in the thick of it, the entrepreneurs who live the fairs personally and know how to assess the market, the managers, administrators and representatives of associations whose leading roles give them a privileged point of view. As always, we will try to lighten the weight of our readers’ burdens by closing the magazine with some advice, sweet this time, about where to enjoy after-hours in Florence, Milan, Paris and, for the first time, London. In conclusion, allow us just once to thank the readers of Showcase and La Spola. Just one year after launching the new web site, the numbers and the assessments of the work done are giving us great satisfaction. In one year, we have extended our presence to new fairs including Heimtextil, Techtextil North America and The London Textile Fair, now united with the habitual events including Pitti Filati, Milano Unica, Filo and Proposte. This is a sign that the groundwork in the districts and at the shows is continuing and needs the support of everyone.

This is our way of facing up to the crisis that has affected the whole sector and we hope that it will continue to be appreciated in the second year of www.laspola.com.

Seconda tornata di fiere e tante curiosità da soddisfare: dopo un febbraio abbastanza ‘classico’ è arrivata un’estate che porterà tante novità, a iniziare da Blossom Première Vision che raggiunge Prima Milano Unica sul ‘palcoscenico’ delle precollezioni di luglio ampliando le opportunità delle aziende di raggiungere i clienti prima delle due fiere di settembre. Selezione rigorosa a Parigi, numeri in crescita a Milano e attesa per il responso del mercato. E se fino a sei mesi fa avremmo parlato di fiere “classiche” in riferimento a quelle di settembre stavolta dobbiamo parlare di novità, visto il trasferimento di Milano Unica a Rho, in spazi ben più ampi di quelli del Portello ma condivisi con altri saloni dell’indotto moda, tra accessori e abbigliamento.

Come sempre Showcase si affida alle parole degli addetti ai lavori, di imprenditori che vivono le fiere in prima persona e sanno valutare il mercato, di dirigenti, responsabili di associazioni e amministratori che dai loro ruoli di vertice hanno un osservatorio privilegiato. E come sempre cercheremo di ‘alleggerire’ il lavoro dei nostri lettori chiudendo la rivista con una serie di consigli, stavolta ‘dolci’, su dove trascorrere le ore post lavoro a Firenze, Milano, Parigi e, per la prima volta, Londra.

In chiusura di editoriale consentiteci, una tantum, di ringraziare i lettori di Showcase e de La Spola: ad un anno dal lancio del nuovo sito web i numeri e le valutazioni del lavoro fatto ci stanno dando grande gratificazione. In un anno sono arrivate le presenze a nuove fiere, come Heimtextil, Techtextil North America e The London Textile Fair, unite a quelle più abituali come Pitti Filati, Milano Unica, Filo e Proposte, segno che il lavoro capillare su distretti e saloni prosegue ed ha bisogno del sostegno di tutti. E’ il nostro modo di far fronte alla crisi che ha colpito tutto il settore e speriamo che possa essere apprezzato anche nel secondo anno di www.laspola.com.

The usual overview of the fairs increasingly filling up the calendars of companies, design offices, buyers and visitors, can only benefit from new names and dates. The routine continues thanks to Pitti Filati, which once again, for this year at least, opens the season for the larger showrooms.

The Florentine event, which kicks off on June 29, opens the series of showrooms for textile-clothing with its 79th edition and the world premiere of the autumn-winter 2017-18 collections of knitting yarns. Two main organizational changes have been made: Vintage Selection is no longer at Stazione Leopolda but moves to the Fortezza, and Pitti Italics will be followed by Sansovino 6. Vintage Selection, in its 28th edition, arrives for the first time at the Fortezza da Basso and will last as long as Pitti Filati: the change of location, however, only concerns the summer editions and was designed to create even more synergy with Pitti Filati. Pitti Italics, Fondazione Pitti’s Immagine Discovery program that promotes and supports the new generation of Italian fashion designers, or designers based in Italy, with an international profile, will also present a special event at Pitti Filati for the first time, with Sansovino 6. This brand was founded by American designer Edward Buchanan, who will give a special lecture with student finalists of the contest Feel the Yarn, which has also been consolidated and amplified.

The streets of entrepreneurs will then split into two streams: one will take the road for Lombardy, for Prima Milano Unica, the other will continue north, to Paris and the first edition of Blossom PV at the Palais Brongniart. We talk about these two showrooms separately, but the debates and questions (especially on the choice of the exact same date) characterize the months that preceded the fairs: between La consueta panoramica sulle fiere che ormai sempre più riempiono il calendario di aziende, uffici stile, buyers e visitatori non può che arricchirsi di nuovo nomi e nuove date. La consuetudine si salva grazie a Pitti Filati, che rimane, almeno per quest’anno, la fiera di apertura del calendario, almeno in riferimento ai saloni più grandi.

La kermesse fiorentina, al via il 29 giugno, apre la serie di saloni del tessile-abbigliamento con l’edizione numero 79 e l’anteprima mondiale autunno-inverno 2017/18 delle collezioni di filati per maglieria. Dal punto di vista organizzativo sono due le novità principali: Vintage Selection che sbarca in Fortezza lasciando la Stazione Leopolda e la prosecuzione del Pitti Italics con Sansovino 6. Vintage Selection, arrivata all’edizione 28, arriva per la prima volta alla Fortezza Da Basso e durerà quanto Pitti Filati: il cambiamento di location riguarda però solo le edizioni estive ed è stato studiato per potenziare ancor più la sinergia con Pitti Filati.

Pitti Italics, il programma della Fondazione Pitti Immagine Discovery che promuove e supporta le nuove generazioni di fashion designer italiani, o basati in Italia, che hanno una proiezione internazionale, presenterà per la prima volta un evento speciale anche in occasione di Pitti Filati, con Sansovino 6, brand fondato dal designer americano Edward Buchanan, che terrà una speciale lecture con gli studenti finalisti del concorso Feel The Yarn, a sua volta viene rafforzato e amplificato.

Poi le strade degli imprenditori si divideranno in due rivoli: uno prenderà la strada della Lombardia, per Prima Milano Unica, l’altro proseguirà più a nord, per arrivare a Parigi e alla prima edizione di Blossom PV al Palazzo Brongniart. Due saloni dei quali parliamo a parte ma che hanno caratterizzato, con dibattiti e interrogativi (soprattutto sulla scelta della stessa identica data) i mesi che hanno preceduto le fiere: tra chi prenderà parte ad entrambe e chi invece andrà (per scelta o obbligo) soltanto ad una è innegabile che la curiosità per vedere i risultati di questa concomitanza è tanta. those who will take part in both, and those who will go (by choice or obligation) to just one, it is undeniable that there is a massive curiosity to see the results of this combination. Prima has already seen an enormous increase in participants, while Blossom offers a lot of quality and high-end products, so in the end, a ‘peaceful coexistence’ between the two July fairs would not surprise anyone.

A week later comes The London Textile Fair, which with 400 exhibitors is carving out a leading role in a part of Europe where textiles once reigned. Those who have been participating in this fair for some years assure us that it is one of the most vibrant and interesting, with excellent opportunities for finding customers and discovering new markets. There are companies from Italy, Portugal, Turkey, France, United Kingdom, Spain and Germany, divided into four sectors (textiles, accessories, prints and vintage) at the Business Design Centre in Islington. Its spaces are almost all filled up and many are on the waiting list for the next editions. Historical visitors include representatives for Alexander McQueen, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Lacoste, Chanel, Harrods, MaxMara, Zara and Victoria Beckham.

The tour de force will be interrupted by a much-needed August break to recharge batteries before September, with the trio of Bayern Monaco-Milan-Paris. Munich Fabric Start will actually begin August 30, a customary and necessary advance opening, to give space to Milano Unica: the Bavarian showroom (which has hired a new exhibition manager, Panos Sofianos, who will concentrate on Bluezone sections reserved for denim, & New Business) will have a cutting edge exhibition platform in the Key House area, which will act as a link between Munich Fabric Start and the Bluezone section (open only August 30 and 31).

From September 6 there is the new version of Milano Unica, which will be held in Rho in a much broader context, though not as metterà sul piatto tanta qualità e prodotti di fascia alta, quindi alla fine non sorprenderebbe nessuno una ‘pacifica convivenza’ tra le due fiere di luglio. Una settimana dopo toccherà a The London Textile Fair, che con 400 espositori si sta ritagliando un ruolo di primo piano in una parte di Europa dove, una volta, il tessile imperava. Chi partecipa a questa fiera da qualche anno assicura che si tratta di una delle più vivaci ed interessanti, con ottime opportunità di trovare clienti e di scoprire nuovi mercati. Presenti aziende da Italia, Portogallo, Turchia, Francia, Regno Unito, Spagna e Germania, divisi in quattro settori (tessili, accessori, stampa e vintage) del Business Design Centre di Islington, quasi completamente esaurito nei suoi spazi e con tanti in lista di attesa per le prossime edizioni.

Tra i visitatori storici ci sono rappresentanti di Alexander McQueen, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Lacoste, Chanel, Harrods, MaxMara, Zara e Victoria Beckham.

Il tour de force verrà interrotto da un agosto necessario per ricaricare le batterie in vista di settembre, con il trittico Monaco di BavieraMilano-Parigi. In realtà Munich Fabric Start inizierà il 30 agosto, con un anticipo ormai abituale e necessario per non avvicinarsi troppo a Milano Unica: il salone bavarese (che ha messo sotto contratto un nuovo exhibition manager, Panos Sofianos, che si dedicherà alle sezioni Bluezone, riservata al denim, & New Business) avrà nell’area Key House una piattaforma espositiva all’avanguardia, che fungerà da link tra Munich Fabric Start e la sezione Bluezone (aperta solo il 30 e 31 agosto).

Poi dal 6 settembre toccherà alla nuova versione di Milano Unica, che si svolgerà a Rho in un contesto molto allargato, anche se non quanto annunciato appena sei mesi fa, visto che Lineapelle ha fatto marcia indietro sull’onda delle proteste degli espositori, che ritenevano 10 fairs

extended as was announced just six months ago, given that Lineapelle backtracked due to exhibitors’ protest. They felt and still feel that the beginning of September is too early. So they will be skipping the fifth “Made in Italy” edition that the then Undersecretary Carlo Calenda hoped for with Mipel and TheMicam (September 3-6), Milano Unica and Origin Passion and Beliefs, the two fairs held simultaneously from the 6th to the 8th. Without Lineapelle, the Rho space coverage will be reduced but Milano Unica, which will base the new format on the ‘piazza’ concept, with stands that revolve around a meeting place like villages of yesteryear, will make its newfound importance felt after a stuttering start to the decade due to crises and defections. Now the Italian textiles and clothing front has consolidated around a common project, even if there is still no talk of abandoning Paris to make Milan the world's leading trade fair.

For its part, Première Vision confirms a formula further rewarded by the recent name change, grouping all the Parc des Expositions showrooms in Villepinte in France under the unique PVP abbreviation. Though in recent years France has had to endure terrorism, strikes and violent protests from unions and workers, the fair seems a happy island which, at least for three days, leaves problems outside the door. Crises and circumstances do not help, but the PV heads will cope with the difficulties here too.

Filo closes the calendar and has been moved up to late September to benefit even more from timing. In recent editions, the showroom seems to have improved in verve and participation and therefore the signs are good for September 28 and 29 as well. Palazzo delle Stelline will presumably be full (a full house is practically announced at the time of going to print) and therefore the early date, not to everyone’s pleasure, is not having negative consequences. e ritengono ancora l’inizio di settembre una data troppo anticipata rispetto alle abitudini. Così ‘salta’ il pokerissimo del made in Italy auspicato dall’allora sottosegretario Carlo Calenda con Mipel e TheMicam (dal 3 al 6 settembre), Milano Unica e Origin Passion and Beliefs, le due fiere che si svolgeranno in contemporanea dal 6 all’8. Senza Lineapelle la copertura degli spazi di Rho sarà ridotta ma Milano Unica, che baserà il nuovo format sul concetto di ‘piazza’, con gli stand che ruoteranno intorno ad un luogo di incontro come succedeva una volta nei paesi, sarà far valere il proprio ritrovato peso dopo un inizio di decennio balbettante a causa di crisi e defezioni.

Adesso il fronte del tessile-abbigliamento italiano si è ricompattato intorno ad un progetto comune, anche se di abbandonare Parigi per fare di Milano la principale fiera mondiale ancora non si parla.

Dal canto suo Première Vision riconferma una formula ulteriormente premiata dal recente cambio di nome, col raggruppamento sotto la sigla unica di PVP tutti i saloni del Parc des Expositions di Villepinte: in una Francia che negli ultimi anni ha dovuto sopportare terrorismo, scioperi e proteste anche violente di sindacati e operai la fiera sembra un’isola felice che, almeno per tre giorni, tiene fuori dalla porta i problemi. Crisi e congiuntura non aiutano ma i vertici di PV sapranno far fronte anche in questo caso alle difficoltà.

Chiude calendario e mese Filo, anticipato a fine settembre per giocare ancora di più sulla tempistica. Nelle ultime edizioni il salone sembra effettivamente migliorato in brio e partecipazione e quindi anche per il 28 e 29 settembre le indicazioni sono buone. Il Palazzo delle Stelline sarà presumibilmente pieno (al momento di andare in stampa il tutto esaurito è praticamente annunciato) e quindi l’anticipo, non a tutti gradito, non sta lasciando strascichi negativi. fairs 11

The start-up of last July has convinced textile manufacturers. The 2016 edition of Prima Milano Unica had a very good response from exhibitors, and there will be 121 Italian and foreign participants. The first edition welcomed 66 Italian exhibitors and was visited by 706 companies for 1,580 highly select operators, but the expectations for this second edition are already much higher.

The creator of this formula was Silvio Albini: “As a forerunner of a 'bold' and intelligent initiative,” said Ercole Botto Poala, president of Milano Unica, in this regard, “we must thank my predecessor, who knew how to listen to textile manufacturers and fashion communities despite the uncertainty of the result.”

For today’s result, the numbers talk: exhibitors grew by 83.33% thanks to the dialogue between the trade fair managers and the most important textile districts, national and international, which sent companies of the highest level to Milan.

The event will take place at the same time as the preview by Lineapelle on July 6 and 7 in Pavilion 3 of the Portello of Fieramilanocity. The targets are the most elegant fashion brands that make product customization the strong point of their collections.

Concreteness, since the first edition, has been a feature of this event. The unequivocal voice of the exhibitors from the first edition has hinted that every contact has been finalized and profitable. But while the exhibitors have credited the event for its timing and features, customers also say they are satisfied with this service offered by Milano Unica that meets a need now felt by a significant part (though not all) of the market.

La prima edizione aveva accolto 66 espositori italiani ed era stata visitata da 706 aziende per 1.580 operatori altamente selezionati, ma le aspettative per questa seconda edizione sono già ben più alte.

E del risultato oggi parlano i numeri: gli espositori sono cresciuti dell’83,33% grazie al dialogo che i responsabili della fiera hanno condotto con i distretti tessili più importanti, nazionali e non, dai quali sono arrivati a Milano aziende di altissimo livello. La manifestazione si svolgerà in contemporanea con anteprima by Lineapelle il 6 e 7 luglio nel padiglione 3 del Portello di Fieramilanocity.

Il target sono i brand fashion più votati all’eleganza e che fanno della personalizzazione dei prodotti il punto di forza delle loro collezioni.

Caratteristica dell’appuntamento, fin dalla prima edizione, è stata la concretezza, dato che la voce, univoca, degli espositori della prima edizione ha lasciato intendere che ogni contatto sia stato finalizzato e proficuo. Ma se gli espositori hanno reso merito alla manifestazione per tempismo e caratteristiche, anche i clienti si dicono soddisfatti di questo servizio realizzato da Milano Unica per soddisfare una necessità ormai sentita da una parte significativa (anche se non totalitaria) del mercato.

Everything is ready, then, for this preview, which will be followed by, from September 6 to 8, Milano Unica in a version with a completely renovated concept, selection of manufacturers and customers, and above all, location, with Rho as the choice. Director General Massimo Mosiello has reiterated that this is the appropriate venue for welcoming the combination of fashion and business that Milano Unica represents.

Some sixty companies, carefully picked among the hundreds showing at Première Vision Paris. The location, Brongniart Palace, once the stock exchange, picked among the many possibilities in the heart of Paris. A date carefully picked to place the show at the center of the Paris high fashion week scheduled for 3-8 July. Blossom Première Vision debuts with the most favorable circumstances so the expectations for the first edition of the Paris pre-collections fair are very high, almost as intense as the clamor that arose when Milan and Paris discovered that they had picked the same dates, 6-7 July, for the two fairs of reference. Actually, almost no one has had to sacrifice one or the other of the fairs because the numbers, the targets and the markets of reference are not the same. Paris chose the high road: excellence, rigor in invitations, the chosen few, clearly winking at the top buyers, the luxury class and costs that few care to bear.

In the end, nine nations will be present with Italy representing 50% of the exhibitors and 29 brands, two of which (Gritti and Reca) in the Accessories sector and some companies with more than a single brand. Who chose Paris for the 2017-18 fall/winter pre-collections, thus honoring the invitation received from Première Vision in February when the coveted little card began to circulate in the corridors of Parc des Expositions? The names are what would be expected, with some newcomers and many standard-bearers with a few who, during the same days, will also man a stand at Prima Milano Unica.

The picked are: Federico Aspesi, Barzaghi, Brugnoli Giovanni, Canepa, Lanificio Roberto Drighi, Europ Marchini, Lanificio Faisa, Flow by Menchi Tessuti, G. Binda, Gruppocinque, La Torre, Lanificio Bisentino, Luxury Jersey, Manteco, Mantero, Marini Industrie, Menchi Tessuti, Manifattura Tessile Toscana, O’Jersey, Picchi, Piero Galli, Fancyroses by Rodilosso, Lanificio Faliero Sarti, Selecta, Swing by Gruppocinque, Tessilbiella and Tessilgodi.

Bisentino, Brugnoli, Canepa, Faisa, Manifattura Tessile Toscana, Manteco, Marini Industrie, O’Jersey, Reca, Selecta and Tessilbiella are the Italian team of eleven (a pundit’s reference to the European soccer championship) that will be on the field at Blossom and Prima Milano Unica, practically revealing the concept of the continental pre-collection tactic, which will automatically measure the temperature of the two markets.

The other companies come from France (17), Austria (1), Great Britain (2), Japan (9), South Korea (1), Portugal (2), Spain (1) and Turkey (2).

Tutto è pronto, insomma, per questa anteprima, cui seguirà, dal 6 all’8 settembre, Milano Unica in una versione completamente rinnovata per concept, selezione di produttori e clienti, e soprattutto sede, con la scelta di Rho, che il direttore generale Massimo Mosiello ha ribadito essere quella più idonea ad accogliere il connubio di moda e affari che Milano Unica rappresenta.

Una sessantina di aziende attentamente selezionate tra le centinaia presenti a Première Vision Paris. Una location, palazzo Brongniart, l’ex Borsa, attentamente selezionata tra le tante possibili nel cuore di Parigi. Una data attentamente selezionata che mette il salone al centro della settimana parigina dell’alta moda, in programma dal 3 all’8 luglio. Blossom Première Vision nasce sotto i migliori auspici e così l’attesa per la prima edizione della fiera di precollezioni parigina è tanta, pari almeno al clamore suscitato quando Milano e Parigi hanno ‘scoperto’ di aver scelto la stessa data, il 6 e 7 luglio, per le due fiere di riferimento.

Poi in realtà quasi nessuno ha dovuto sacrificarsi nella scelta dell’una o dell’altra fiera in quanto numeri, target e mercati di riferimento non sono gli stessi: Parigi ha scelto la strada dell’eccellenza, del rigore negli inviti, del ‘pochi ma ottimi’, strizzando chiaramente l’occhio ai buyers di primissima fascia, del lusso e dei costi per pochi.

Chi ha scelto Parigi per le precollezioni autunno/inverno 2017/18, onorando così l’invito ricevuto da Première Vision a febbraio, quando il prezioso cartoncino ha iniziato a girare nei corridoi del Parc des Expositions? I nomi sono quelli attesi, con qualche novità e tante conferme, e ci sarà anche chi, negli stessi giorni, avrà lo stand a Prima Milano Unica.

Bisentino, Brugnoli, Canepa, Faisa, Manifattura Tessile Toscana, Manteco, Marini Industrie, O’Jersey, Reca, Selecta e Tessilbiella l’undici italiano (siamo anche nei giorni dell’Europeo di calcio) che parteciperà sia a Blossom che a Prima Milano Unica, sdoganando di fatto il concetto di precollezione a livello continentale e trasformandosi automaticamente in un termometro per misurare i due mercati.

Varese, a treasure box Varese, uno scrigno per l’industria della moda for the fashion industry di Elisa Signorini

If the Olympics were at stake, Varese would win a slew of medals. In fact, it is one of the most important districts in Italy for the fashion industry. Its assets include 1,712 manufacturers and a dedicated workforce of almost 14,400 persons, ranking it eighth in Italy. It also leads the nation in some production niches. The province of Varese is, for example, the domestic leader for production of knit fabric. Dyeing and bleaching activities are also on the domestic podium with a third place ranking in Italy, 120 enterprises with a workforce of 2,271.

Obviously, not everything is smooth sailing. We talked about this with the president of the province of Varese Industrial Union, Riccardo Comerio.

What is the current state of health of the Varese district?

The business climate of the textile and clothing sector in the province of Varese suffered a slowdown during the first 3 months of the year, with respect to the acceptable level of performance at end 2015. Of the entrepreneurs interviewed by our staff personnel, 64% reported lower production levels compared to 24% unchanged and only 13% with higher production levels. During the same period, exports slid by 2.1%. It's typical of a situation with continuous high-low oscillations that alternate from survey to survey. The employment scenario continues to make intensive use of the social security net. Aside from the business climate, the structure of the district remains one of the most important in Italy for fashion.

A few weeks ago, you completed your first year as president of the province of Varese Industrial Union. Which result, to date, has given you the greatest satisfaction and which commitment for the coming months is the most urgent?

It is difficult to rank the objectives we have achieved. I can certainly say that, together with the colleagues who sit on the managing and representative bodies of the association, and with our thanks to the entire operational structure, we did succeed in launching important projects that involve various areas. One where we intend to continue investing resources and time will certainly be Fabbrica 4.0, which is also supported by our university, the LIUC of Castellanza, with its research laboratories. I also wish to mention our commitment to promote SME corporate welfare in our territory (the VareseWelfare project) and our project to increase corporate sensitivity to making health promotion a value in the workplace (the WHP project). Another commitment regards the creation of a new bond between companies and the local

Se si trattasse di Olimpiadi, Varese guadagnerebbe parecchie medaglie. E’ infatti di uno dei distretti più importanti in Italia per quanto riguarda l’industria della moda. Un patrimonio fatto di 1.712 imprese produttive per un totale di quasi 14.400 addetti, che lo piazza all’ottavo posto nazionale. E con primati nazionali in alcune nicchie produttive. Il Varesotto risulta essere il primo territorio in Italia per la tessitura a maglia. Da podio anche le attività di tintura e candeggio: terze con 120 unità locali e 2.271 addetti. Non sono tutte rose e fiori. Ne parliamo con il presidente dell’Unione degli Industriali della Provincia di Varese, Riccardo Comerio.

Presidente, qual è l’attuale stato di salute del distretto di Varese?

A livello congiunturale il settore del tessile e abbigliamento in provincia di Varese ha registrato nei primi 3 mesi dell’anno una battuta d’arresto rispetto alle discrete performance di fine 2015. Il 64% degli imprenditori intervistati dal nostro Ufficio Studi ha evidenziato un calo dei livelli produttivi, a fronte di un 24% di imprese stabili e solo un 13% in miglioramento. L’export, nello stesso periodo, è calato del 2,1%. Ciò è segno di una situazione caratterizzata da continui alti e bassi che si alternano di rilevazione in rilevazione. Con uno scenario occupazionale nel quale rimane alto il ricorso agli ammortizzatori sociali. Rimane, però, al di là della congiuntura, il dato strutturale di un distretto tra i più importanti in Italia del settore moda.

Si è chiuso da poche settimane il primo anno del suo mandato alla presidenza dell’Unione Industriali varesina: qual è il risultato che al momento le ha dato maggiore soddisfazione, quale l’impegno più stringente per i prossimi mesi?

Difficile fare una classifica dei traguardi raggiunti. Di sicuro posso dire che insieme ai colleghi che siedono negli organi direttivi e di rappresentanza dell’Associazione e grazie al lavoro di tutta la struttura operativa abbiamo messo in cantiere importanti progetti che spaziano su più fronti. Tra quelli sui quali continueremo a investire risorse e tempo c’è sicuramente Fabbrica 4.0 per il quale godiamo del supporto della nostra Università, la LIUC di Castellanza, con i suoi laboratori di ricerca. Mi piace poi ricordare il nostro impegno a diffondere il welfare aziendale nelle Pmi del territorio (Progetto VareseWelfare), o quello per aumentare la sensibilità delle aziende nel fare degli ambienti di lavoro dei luoghi di promozione di salute (Progetto WHP). E poi ancora: l’impegno di creare un nuovo legame tra aziende e comunità locale per diffondere la cultura di impresa sia tra i giovani e gli studenti (attraverso il Progetto Generazione d’Industria). Senza contare i progetti di formazione per investire sul capitale umano o le attività per aumentare l’internazionalizzazione delle imprese, anche

What is your biggest worry?

I’ll give you the list of the three concerns of mine that opened the year and will, I fear, continue to threaten our capacity for growth, like a sword of Damocles: international tensions linked to terrorism and wars; erosion of the sense of community and unity that can weaken the bases of the European agreement; and bureaucracy, which even in the local administrations is in a time gap, is out of step and above all is out of synch with the timing requirements of enterprise.

Not only textile. With Itma and Techtextil, textile machinery had two important events. How’s the situation in this sector?

The textile machinery industry in Varese, just like the rest of the machinery sector in general, is certainly a key factor in the local production system. However, the dynamism of this sector in the province of Varese does not depend only on the number of enterprises and the size of the workforce, but also on some stories of innovation. These demonstrate that mature manufacturing sectors cannot survive without possibilities for changing and finding new paths for growth. In fact, our own textile machinery sector has produced important case histories of companies that refurbished their finances by opening to the world of private equity or are developing, with the support of European financing, new digital manufacturing technologies for use in textiles and fashion.

In some areas of Italy, there are movements to merge industrial associations of various territories together. In Lombardy, aside from Milan and Monza, there have been no such cases to date. Is that a choice or an evolution is maturing here too?

Quale la preoccupazione maggiore?

Le faccio un elenco di tre miei timori con cui si è aperto l’anno e che, credo, continueranno a pendere come una spada di Damocle sulle nostre capacità locali di crescita: le tensioni internazionali legate al terrorismo ed alle guerre; lo sfaldamento del senso comunitario ed unitario che rischia di minare alle basi l’accordo europeo; una burocrazia che, anche nelle amministrazioni locali, rimane fuori dal tempo e soprattutto sconnessa dalle esigenze temporali delle imprese.

Non solo tessile: il meccanotessile ha avuto recentemente due momenti importanti con Itma e Techtextil. Com’è Varese in questo comparto?

L’industria varesina del meccanotessile, come quella in generale del settore macchinari, è sicuramente uno dei perni del sistema produttivo locale. Ma la dinamicità di questo comparto nel Varesotto non sta solo nei numeri di imprese e addetti, ma anche in alcune storie di innovazione, che dimostrano come non esistano nel manifatturiero settori maturi senza possibilità di cambiare e trovare nuove strade per la crescita. Proprio il nostro meccanotessile esprime case history importanti di aziende che hanno innovato la propria finanza aprendosi al mondo del private equity, o che stanno sviluppando, anche grazie a finanziamenti europei, nuove tecnologie di fabbricazione digitale da impiegare nella moda e nel tessile e che potrebbero rivoluzionare alcune dinamiche produttive a vantaggio del fenomeno del reshoring.

In alcune aree italiane si assiste a manovre di accorpamento tra Confindustrie territoriali, in Lombardia per il

I would say no. The geography of the associations that has been changing Confindustria since the introduction of the Pesenti reform is intended to create structures that are more capable of responding to the needs of enterprise. In this context, I believe that the nature of our Union is still a paradigm of best practice. Despite the ongoing mergers, we remain one of the most representative associations of the system. Having said that, we cannot remain stock-still in the face of certain operations, the common denominator of which is to improve the potential of the associations. This is an objective that our Union is always developing through new forms of collaboration that we are creating with other units of the system in Lombardy in relation to specific themes such as international outreach, for example with missions abroad. Another example in this sense are the activities promoted in collaboration among the system units, within the Club of 15 representing the leading manufacturing associations of Confindustria, which share requirements, the basics of association and similar programs. In fact, as a consequence of the work carried forward by President Alberto Ribolla, Confindustria of Lombardy is creating a series of technical committees on specific themes, bringing all the associations of the region together to work on creating joint actions of interest to all.

After Expo 2015, what benefits accrued to Varese and the economy of Lombardy?

For the food industry, including that in the province of Varese, it was undoubtedly an important showplace. Export of the sector at the provincial level rose by 6.6% in 2015 and that was probably achieved with a carryover from the effect of the Universal Exposition. In general, however, Expo was a wager that was only partially successful for the province of Varese. The event was actually more focused on Milan and left a legacy of infrastructure in the city of Milan. Now, however, as Lombardy in general and therefore also as the province of Varese, we must demonstrate that we can exploit this legacy to the advantage of the growth capacity of the whole Region.

Finally, does Varese have or foresee the development of bonds with Milan and the core of the fashion sector? I am thinking of the experimental collaboration between Prato and Pitti.

First of all, we must work to create greater synergy between the enterprises and our own district. The textile and clothing group of the Industrial Union of the province of Varese is working to create an e-scouting web platform to search for collaborators and market partners even inside the same local textile and fashion production system. It is one of the few districts in Italy that despite the crisis has maintained the integrity of the supply chain. We must make better use of this characteristic. This platform represents a modern organizational tool of the supply chain that can bring the enterprises important results in terms of visibility although many have little or no brand presence. That is what an analogous experience carried forward in the aerospace district taught us and inspired this latest initiative in our textile sector.

momento (Milano-Monza a parte) non ci sono stati casi del genere. Si tratta di una scelta ben precisa oppure anche qui i tempi stanno maturando per un’evoluzione in tal senso?

Come Unione direi di no. Il cambiamento della geografia associativa che sta caratterizzando Confindustria a seguito della riforma Pesenti è stata voluta per creare strutture meglio capaci di rispondere alle esigenze delle imprese. Su questi terreni la realtà della nostra Unione rappresenta ancora una best practice, anche perché, nonostante le varie fusioni in atto, rimaniamo una delle associazioni più rappresentative del Sistema. Ma non possiamo stare fermi di fronte a certe operazioni, il cui comune denominatore è il miglioramento delle potenzialità delle Associazioni. Uno scopo che la nostra Unione porta avanti attraverso nuove forme di collaborazione che stiamo mettendo in piedi con altre realtà lombarde su temi specifici temi come l’internazionalizzazione (ad esempio con missioni all’estero). Un altro esempio in tal senso sono poi le attività promosse in forma collaborativa tra varie realtà del Sistema all’interno del Club dei 15, che racchiude le associazioni più manifatturiere di Confindustria, accomunate da esigenze, basi associative e programmazioni simili. Infine, grazie anche al lavoro del Presidente Alberto Ribolla, la stessa Confindustria Lombardia sta dando vita a Comitati Tecnici tematici e specifici che vedono tutte le Associazioni della Regione lavorare insieme per dar vita ad azioni comuni.

Post Expo 2015: cosa è rimasto a Varese e all’economia lombarda?

Per l’industria alimentare, anche quella varesina, è stata sicuramente una vetrina importante. L’export del settore a livello provinciale è aumentato del 6,6% nel 2015 e ciò, probabilmente, anche grazie all’effetto traino dell’Esposizione Universale. Più in generale, invece, Expo forse ha rappresentato una scommessa solo in parte vinta dal Varesotto. L’evento è stato, in realtà, più milanese e proprio a Milano ha lasciato un’eredità infrastrutturale che ora, invece, come Lombardia in generale e, dunque, anche come provincia di Varese, dobbiamo saper sfruttare a vantaggio delle capacità di crescita di tutta la Regione.

Infine, Varese ha o prevede di avere legami con Milano e il settore più propriamente ‘moda’? Penso agli esperimenti di collaborazione tra Prato e Pitti…

Prima di tutto dobbiamo lavorare sul creare più sinergie tra le stesse imprese del nostro distretto. Il Gruppo merceologico delle imprese del Tessile e Abbigliamento dell’Unione Industriali varesina sta lavorando alla creazione di una piattaforma web di e-scouting che permetta la ricerca di collaboratori o partner di mercato anche all’interno dello stesso sistema produttivo locale tessile e moda. Una delle poche realtà in Italia che, nonostante la crisi, ha mantenuto intatta l’integrità della filiera. Caratteristica che dobbiamo saper valorizzare meglio. Questa piattaforma rappresenta uno strumento moderno di organizzazione delle supply chain che pensiamo possa dare alle imprese, molte delle quali poco brandizzate, importanti risultati in termini di visibilità.

Almeno così ci dice un’analoga esperienza portata avanti dal distretto aerospaziale, da cui trae spunto quest’ultima iniziativa del nostro settore tessile.

Full-fledged fashion, La moda a 360 gradi, da Riccione al Mozambico from Riccione to Mozambique di Matteo Grazzini

Antonio Franceschini, national director of CNA Federmoda, like it or not, is one of the leading European experts in trade fairs and internationalization: his presence at major fairs is in fact a constant, while in Italy he is the soul of Riccione Moda Italia, the event that is also home to the Concorso Nazionale Professione Moda Giovani (National Young Fashion Designers Contest), held every year in July and in its 26th edition. Precisely this contest, as well as other collective initiatives of artisans at trade fairs in Milan and Paris, is one of the starting points for analyzing international agreements made by CNA and evaluating new markets and realities, such as the table for the Committee for Fashion and Accessories of which Cna Federmoda is also a part.

Is the trade fair system still the best way to present products?

Trade fairs are one of the main channels for presenting products to the large international audience. At the same time, this tool must always be thought of as part of a larger program of communication actions. Commercial operators, based on a careful analysis conducted in the field, have little time to search for new suppliers. For Italian events, the planning and commissioning of the system programs needs to be reviewed, especially for the upstream supply chain, where we find ourselves with a number of events scattered throughout the year while the main international competitor offers an integrated platform.

You have chosen the web too for Moodmarket. What response have you had?

Moodmarket is in some way a spin-off of the intuition of the Project “Italian manufacturing”. With “Italian manufacturing” we began to promote the fashion industry, keeping in mind that the value of Made in Italy is represented by the ability of many small and medium-sized enterprises, that represent the backbone of the fashion system, to stay in business. We started to promote third parties and subcontractors, offering components that play an important role in the fashion collections: embroidery, buttons, trimmings, zippers, labels, etc. Moodmarket complements “Italian Antonio Franceschini, responsabile nazionale di Cna Federmoda, è volente o nolente, uno dei massimi esperti europei di fiere ed internazionalizzazione: la sua presenza ai maggiori saloni è infatti una costante, mentre in Italia è l’anima di Riccione Moda Italia, la manifestazione che ospita anche il Concorso Nazionale Professione Moda Giovani Stilisti, in programma ogni anno a luglio e arrivato alla 26’ edizione. Proprio questo concorso, come anche altre iniziative collettive degli artigiani ai saloni di Milano e Parigi, è uno degli spunti per analizzare gli accordi internazionali fatti da Cna e valutare mercati e nuove reltà, come il tavolo del Comitato per la Moda e l’Accessorio del quale fa parte anche Cna Federmoda.

Il sistema fieristico è ancora il miglior veicolo di presentazione dei prodotti?

Le fiere rimangono uno dei principali canali per presentarsi alla grande platea internazionale. Allo stesso tempo questo strumento deve essere sempre più pensato come parte di un più ampio programma di azioni di comunicazione. Gli operatori commerciali, sulla base di una attenta analisi che abbiamo condotto sul campo, dedicano poco tempo alla ricerca di nuovi fornitori. Per le manifestazioni italiane si rende poi necessaria una revisione della programmazione e una messa in sistema dei programmi soprattutto per la filiera a monte dove ci troviamo con una pluralità di eventi sparsi lungo il calendario mentre il principale competitor internazionale propone una piattaforma integrata.

Avete scelto anche la via del web con Moodmarket. Che risposta avete avuto?

Moodmarket raccoglie l’intuizione del Progetto “manifattura italiana”, ne è in un qualche modo un suo spin off. Con “manifattura italiana” iniziammo a promuovere la filiera moda avendo ben chiaro che il valore del made in Italy è rappresentato dal permanere in Italia di tante imprese artigiane, di tante piccole e medie imprese che rappresentano la spina dorsale del sistema moda. Iniziammo a promuovere il conto terzi e la subfornitura intesa come offerta di componenti che rivestono un ruolo di rilievo all’interno delle collezioni moda: ricami, bottoni, passamanerie, cerniere, etichette, ecc. manufacturing” and allows us to promote with dedicated communication actions. It’s excellent for helping companies meet and communicate with each other, and also has a function dedicated to the organization of matching that we already implemented in 2015, and will repeat this year.

You are one of the “founders” of the Committee for Fashion and Accessories. After a few months of activity and the CalendaScalfarotto alternation and the return of Calenda as minister, what prospects do you see in this work table?

Expectations are high. We hope the whole thing doesn’t become just another bubble. In the past, in other legislatures, we witnessed, at the ministerial level, the establishment of more or less sectorial “tables” which didn’t have the results we expected. The system logic has never been able to prevail over that particular area and the tables ended up affecting the original perspectives of the specific interests of the components. We maintain that we need to think in terms of supply chain and we hope that this is not just another missed opportunity. Today, an in-depth study has begun on specific topics such as sustainability, training and opportunities offered by the world of the so-called millenials. An attempt is being made to bring the trade fairs and fashion shows into the system. The work carried out is producing its first results and we hope this is the right occasion.

For Years, CNA Federmoda has stood out for projects and initiatives on non-conventional markets, such as Mozambique. Is this choice intended to abandon the usual contexts or are you looking for new markets both for imports and exports?

It's primarily a choice of cultural attention to what moves around this world in the planet’s different latitudes and longitudes, without preconceptions and prejudices. We must be aware that the creative spirit is widespread and even in countries with complex economic and social problems, young people pay a lot of attention to fashion and creativity. Experience has shown us that often the innovative idea is the synthesis of a flux of contamination, interweavings and synergies that come from contact with different expressions, with aesthetic visions distant from our own, which stimulate experimentation and inspire new fashion lines. Promoting international synergies is the right way to intervene to support avendo anche una funzione dedicata all’organizzazione di matching che già abbiamo realizzato nel 2015 e ripeteremo quest’anno. La risposta è stata interessante.

Siete tra i “fondatori” del Comitato per la Moda e l’Accessorio. Dopo pochi mesi di attività e l’avvicendamento CalendaScalfarotto e il ritorno di Calenda come ministro che prospettive vedete in questo tavolo di lavoro?

Le aspettative sono alte, ci auguriamo che il tutto non si trasformi in una ennesima bolla di sapone. Già in passato, in altre legislature, abbiamo assistito a livello ministeriale alla costituzione di “tavoli” più o meno settoriali che non hanno portato ai risultati auspicati, la logica di sistema non è mai riuscita a prevalere su quella particolare e gli interessi specifici dei componenti i tavoli hanno finito per inficiare le prospettive originarie. Noi sosteniamo la necessità di ragionare in termini di filiera e auspichiamo che questa non sia l’ennesima occasione persa. Oggi si è iniziato un lavoro di approfondimento su argomenti specifici come sostenibilità, formazione e opportunità offerte dal mondo dei cosiddetti millenials, è poi in corso un tentativo di portare a sistema anche il programma fiere e sfilate.

Il lavoro fin qui condotto sta portando i primi risultati e confidiamo possa essere l’occasione giusta.

CNA Federmoda si distingue ormai da anni per progetti e iniziative su mercati non usuali, come ad esempio il Mozambico.

E’ una scelta fatta per uscire dai contesti abituali o siete alla ricerca di nuovi mercati sia per l’import che per l’export?

E’ una scelta innanzitutto di attenzione culturale a ciò che si muove attorno a questo mondo nelle diverse latitudini e longitudini del pianeta, senza preconcetti e pregiudizi. Dobbiamo essere consapevoli del fatto che lo spirito creativo è diffuso ed anche in Paesi con problematiche economiche e sociali complesse l’attenzione dei giovani verso la moda e la creatività è alta. L’esperienza ci ha dimostrato come molto spesso l’dea innovativa sia la sintesi di un fluire di contaminazioni, intrecci e sinergie venuti dal contatto con espressioni di differente ambito, con visioni estetiche lontane dalla nostra, che stimolano la sperimentazione e ispirano nuove linee di tendenza. Favorire le sinergie internazionali è il modo giusto di intervenire a supporto dell’innovazione nel tessile-abbigliamento anche per le PMI locali. Questa funzione del nostro modello di intervento gode dell’attenzione di operatori e istituzioni sia in Italia che all’estero e CNA Federmoda è stata

innovation in textiles and clothing for local SMEs. This function of our intervention model is getting the attention of operators and institutions both in Italy and abroad and CNA Federmoda was asked to illustrate it at international meetings and exhibitions in Berlin, Shanghai, Kobe, Tokyo and other markets and to present it again in a framework of cooperation projects with countries such as Brazil, Burkina Faso and Mozambique.

The risk is that of self-referencing. We must commit to learning, studying and understanding what revolves around us to find new ways: I like to remember what Vittorio Foa said whenever I pause to think about new projects: “There is an epochal break when not only the things that we see don’t change, but also the categories that we use to see them with.” Therefore, exploring new contexts puts us in a position to seize unexpected opportunities and major ideas. We were some of the first to perceive the “African movement” by working to create opportunities on both sides and this happened in a timely way.

Some of these collaborations came to fruition in Riccione Moda Italia and the National Young Fashion Designers Competition.

Is this your main event?

In 1991 we started the competition within the broader program of Riccione Moda Italia - RMI – Ricerca Moda Innovazione (Fashion Research Innovation). The initiative was established and still has two main objectives; to give an opportunity to young people when they leave school, whether public, private, technical, professional schools, Academies, Universities, or something else, to enter the working world and experience interaction between the world of Education and Training and the business world. The competition helped young people who went on to occupy leading positions in many companies in the sector or start their own businesses. This experience has allowed us to monitor the state of the sector’s training for more than 25 years. When we say that our educational reality for the sector is behind we risk an over-simplification not supported by data and again, heterophile attitudes. How many have been committed to date to supporting our fashion system starting with the training of chiamata a illustrarla in meeting e mostre internazionali a Berlino, Shanghai, Kobe, Tokio e in altre piazze e a riproporla nell’ambito di progetti di collaborazioni con Paesi come Brasile, Burkina Faso e Mozambico. Il rischio è l’autoreferenzialità, dobbiamo quindi impegnarci per conoscere, studiare e capire cosa ci ruota intorno per trovare nuove strade: mi piace ricordare una frase di Vittorio Foa su cui mi soffermo ogni volta che penso a nuove progettualità: “Si ha una rottura epocale quando non cambiano solo le cose che vediamo, ma anche le categorie che adoperiamo per vederle”. Andare quindi ad esplorare contesti nuovi ci ha messo nelle condizioni di cogliere opportunità inaspettate e spunti di grande rilievo, siamo stati tra i primi a percepire il “movimento africano” lavorando per creare opportunità entrambe le parti e questo è puntualmente avvenuto.

Alcune di queste collaborazioni si sono concretizzate a Riccione Moda Italia e nel Concorso Nazionale Professione Moda Giovani Stilisti. E’ questa la vostra manifestazione di punta?

Nel 1991 abbiamo avviato il Concorso all’interno del più ampio programma di Riccione Moda Italia – RMI – Ricerca Moda Innovazione. L’iniziativa si poneva e si pone ancora due principali obiettivi; dare l’opportunità ai giovani a fine percorso scolastico, sia stato questo all’interno di scuole pubbliche o private, di Istituti Tecnici, Professionali, di Accademie, di Università o altro ancora, di entrare in contatto con il mondo del lavoro e quello di aprire un dialogo tra mondo dell’Istruzione e della Formazione con il mondo delle Imprese. Il Concorso ha visto uscire ragazzi che sono andati ad occupare posizioni di rilievo in tante imprese del settore o ad avviare attività in proprio. Grazie a questa esperienza godiamo di un osservatorio sullo stato della formazione del settore che vanta oltre 25 anni e quando affermiamo che la nostra realtà formativa per il settore è arretrata rischiamo di incorrere in una semplificazione non supportata da dati e di rincorrere ancora una volta atteggiamenti esterofili. Quanti si sono impegnati fino ad oggi per supportare il nostro sistema moda partendo dalla formazione dei giovani? Noi abbiamo svolto un’attività di selezione all’interno del sistema dell’istruzione e della formazione andando a premiare con borse di studio e stage i più meritevoli.

young people? We carried out a selection within the education and training system, awarding scholarships and internships to the most deserving.

We began a systemic comparison with the “schools”, sending sector operators to provide information and training through conferences, seminars and courses in those places willing to host us, investing as an associative system and without asking anything except hospitality within their courses. The competition itself is structured to become a moment of intensive training; finalists in Riccione have the opportunity to take a week of extracurricular courses and meet those creating fashion in the field. Since 2000, we have created an opportunity for international confrontation that saw young foreigners bring their expertise to Riccione and our young people develop their cultural background. Unfortunately, in recent years, there have been different views on training: we invited ministers and councilors in charge but we encountered a lot of negligence. Today the issue has been brought to the fore by the same government, fine, but there needs to be a comprehensive and thorough examination of what persists in the sector. They should not deal with the issues simply by making statements. The strength of our Made in Italy is the combination of creative and productive virtuosity. Thanks to the integrity of the supply chain, our system has this and can still express it. We have the wealth and craftsmanship of the great tradition of our culture, of our art.

Abbiamo avviato un confronto sistemico con le “scuole”, fornendo disponibilità a portare informazioni e formazione attraverso operatori del settore con conferenze, seminari e corsi in quelle realtà che si sono rese disponibili ad ospitarci, investendo come sistema associativo e senza chiedere nulla ad eccezione di ospitalità all’interno dei loro corsi. Il Concorso stesso si è strutturato per divenire un intensivo momento di formazione; i finalisti a Riccione hanno l’occasione di seguire per una settimana percorsi extracurricolari ed incontrare chi la moda la costruisce sul campo. Dal 2000 poi abbiamo costruito un percorso di confronto internazionale che ha visto giovani stranieri portare la loro esperienza a Riccione e nostri giovani svolgere esperienze per accrescere il loro bagaglio culturale. Purtroppo sulla formazione in questi anni abbiamo trovato poca vicinanza: abbiamo invitato ministri ed assessori preposti ma abbiamo incontrato molta disattenzione. Oggi il tema viene posto alla ribalta dallo stesso Governo, ben venga, ma è necessario fare una ampia e approfondita disamina di ciò che insiste sul settore e non affrontare la tematica solo per enunciati. La forza del nostro made in Italy è il connubio tra virtuosismo creativo e virtuosismo produttivo che il nostro sistema ha grazie all’integrità della filiera che ancora può esprimere. Abbiamo la ricchezza dell’artigianato e la grande tradizione della nostra cultura, della nostre arte.

The Fil-3 philosophy reflected La filosofia Fil-3 si rispecchia nelle tendenze in the trends “Detox? An ethical choice, an important and interesting theme, but it must remain separate from everyone and be approached across the board.” Giacinto Gelli has not yet joined the Greenpeace project with his Fil-3 but he is assessing the perspectives and possibilities every day, in response to customer solicitations and ongoing analysis with colleagues and suppliers. “For the moment,” Gelli explained, “it is impossible for us subscribe because there are no agreements with, and guarantees from, finishers and dyers.

When we all agree, we’ll be able to reckon on the next step. So far, someone’s been counting their chickens before they hatch.

Just as our customers have their own individual specifications, we will have to do the same with our suppliers. The great ability of Prato is to regenerate a garment at 360° while saving water, CO2 and electricity, so we already have a good impact on the environment. But with the Detox parameters, a few contaminated pieces in a bale are sufficient to ruin the lot and that makes it difficult to adhere.”

The next appointment for Fil-3 is Filo in September. “We’ll see trends with a lot of fantasy and designs’, Gelli reveals after visiting Pitti Uomo where he found many ideas that echo the philosophy of Fil-3, “and a lot of linen, the mélange that resembles our type of winter product. We can expect men’s fashion to be completely different from before: jackets used to be solid tints, now they’re all colored. This is a theme close to the taste of Fil-3 and will be the main theme in the collection we’ll take to Palazzo delle Stelline”.

Giacinto Gelli non ha ancora aderito con la sua Fil-3 al progetto di Greenpeace ma ogni giorno ne valuta prospettive e possibilità, anche per le richieste dei clienti e il continuo confronto con colleghi e fornitori: “Al momento per noi è impossibile aderire – spiega Gelli – perché mancano accordi e garanzie con finissaggi e tintorie. Quando saremo tutti d’accordo potremo fare i conti, che per ora sono stati fatti senza l’oste. Come i nostri clienti hanno un proprio unico capitolato altrettanto dovremmo fare noi fornitori. La grandezza di Prato è saper rigenerare il capo a 360 gradi, con risparmio in termini di acqua, CO2 ed elettricità e quindi facciamo già un lavoro di buon impatto sull’ambiente. Ma con i parametri di Detox bastano pochi capi contaminati in un collo per rovinare tutto e questo rende arduo aderire”.

Il prossimo appuntamento per Fil-3 è Filo, a settembre: “Vedremo tendenze con molta fantasia e disegni – anticipa Gelli anche dopo aver visitato Pitti Uomo, trovandovi molti spunti che richiamano la filosofia di Fil-3 – con tanto lino, il melange che riprende la nostra tipologia di prodotto invernale. C’è da aspettarsi una moda uomo completamente diversa da prima; le giacche, prima in tinta unita, ora sono tutte colorate. Un tema che riprende il gusto di Fil-3 e che sarà quello dominante nella collezione che porteremo al Palazzo delle Stelline” 32 focus

Choosing to be La scelta di essere ottimista an optimist di Matteo Grazzini

It is now three years that he has been the president of Confartigianato Prato [Artisan association of Prato], of the Associazione Nazionale Tessili [National textile association], of the Tuscany section of Federazione Moda [Fashion federation] and national president of the category. He is a successful and well-known small business owner with his G.T.2000 warping activity and he has also directed, in the course of the programmed rotation of the offices as agreed among the associations, Rete Imprese Prato [Prato business network].

Andrea Belli, 67 years old, has worked as an artisan from the start. He has had access to privileged observatories (if offices in the world of labor can be considered such in this period) and the image he describes of the Prato district is a chiaroscuro worthy of the best Caravaggio. True to his optimistic and positive character, that does not prevent him from representing reality even when it is less stimulating, but let us begin with the illuminated aspects of the situation.

How are you able to obtain such a well-defined image of Prato and its district?

The mapping we did in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Union and CNA (National artisan and SME confederation) is more than that; it is a survey of the various sectors. We were pioneers in this. We are completing it with the services to the enterprises, such as twisting and warping. What emerges is sharp down-scaling but none the less, Prato remains the most important and attractive textile district in Europe. Aside from textile finishing, the slimming is massive and there are links of the chain that are close to disappearance, in terms of expertise not physical plant. The mapping is not an end in itself, but can be updated by each of the institutions involved.

Does it seem to you that the relationships between entrepreneurs, artisans and institutions have been changing recently, from the government down?

The associations and their managers share the conviction that collaboration is necessary, though some difficulties remain. It seems to me that movement and fermentation are stronger than in the past. Not more than three months ago, we approved a joint Code of Ethics for the district with CNA and the Industrial Union. It is not merely a piece of paper but a set of guidelines for conduct that represents a prerequisite for all of our operations.

Da tre anni è il presidente di Confartigianato Prato, dell’Associazione Nazionale Tessili, delle sezione toscana della Federazione Moda e presidente nazionale di categoria. E’ un affermato e conosciuto piccolo imprenditore con la sua orditura G.T.2000 ed ha guidato anche, nella rotazione canonica delle cariche prevista dagli accordi tra le associazioni, Rete Imprese Prato. Per Andrea Belli, 67 anni, da sempre nel mondo dell’artigianato, gli osservatori ‘privilegiati’ (se tali si possono considerare le cariche nel mondo del lavoro in questo periodo) non sono mancati ed il quadro che fa del distretto pratese è un chiaroscuro degno del miglior Caravaggio. Fedeli al suo carattere ottimista e positivo, che però non gli impedisce anche di rappresentare la realtà quando è meno entusiasmante, partiamo dai “chiari” Perché riuscite ad avere un’immagine così definita di Prato e del suo distretto?

La mappatura che abbiamo fatto insieme a Camera di Commercio, Unione Industriale e Cna è qualcosa di più, è un censimento dei vari comparti. In questo siamo stati pionieri. Lo stiamo ultimando con i servizi alle aziende, come ritorciture e orditure, ed emerge un ridimensionamento forte, nonostante il quale Prato resta il distretto tessile più importante e attrattivo d’Europa. Nobilitazione a parte il dimagrimento è però notevole e ci sono degli anelli della filiera che sono vicini alla scomparsa, come competenze se non come impianti. La mappatura non è un lavoro fine e se stesso ma riaggiornabile da parte di tutti gli enti.

Negli ultimi tempi sembrano cambiati i rapporti tra imprenditori, artigiani e istituzioni, dal Governo in giù?

Nelle associazioni e nei loro dirigenti è condivisa l’esigenza di collaborare, pur con qualche difficoltà. Mi sembra che sia un movimento ed un humus più forte del passato; non più tardi tre mesi fa abbiamo condiviso con Cna e Unione industriali il Codice Etico di distretto, che non è un pezzo di carta ma un insieme di linee guida di comportamento che vale anche come premessa di tutte le nostre operazioni.

A proposito di rapporti tra associazioni: come valuta la presenza tra i soci di Cna di numerose aziende di cittadini 34 interview

Andrea Belli With regard to relations between the associations, how do you feel about the presence of many enterprises owned by Chinese citizens among the members of CNA? Is it added value? Is there a clear path to integration and legality?

I start by favoring the greatest possible integration at all levels – professional, social, economic – and therefore, also in terms of labor. The future depends on understanding but it takes two to succeed, just like it does with couples, to have a common goal to pursue with all your energy. For now, I don’t have the feeling that this is happening with our Chinese associates. There are about 150-200 (numbers are volatile), still a low percentage of the 4500 existing enterprises. The possibility that they can achieve integration and that we can all become resources for each other may well exist but this requires energies and resources above the level of the district, that is at the regional and national level, from the consulates to the courts and other institutions. It is a long-term undertaking but we must continue to believe in it.

The sustainability theme. How are third-party suppliers, the artisans, affected?

Here too we can refer to reciprocity. If I want to adhere to certain protocols, I have to undertake commitments, expenses and sacrifices and I may end up not making sales. Those who don’t adhere, pretend to or fake it, will continue to sell. So instead of being virtuous, the system is damaging because it weakens or eliminates those who follow the rules and strengthens the sly and the cunning. Then when only a few are left and there’s no more competition, they catch up and put their obligations in order. There are some 80 billion garments to be disposed of in the world. To succeed in disposing of them will take the commitment of everyone together.

How are relations between different districts? Do you talk with Biella, Como and the others?

Yes, not as much as I would like but we do, at all levels. Both between relatives (meaning the artisan associations) and between acquaintances (meaning all the others including research centers). We could achieve 100, but let’s say we reach 50. What happened with Acte [European Textile Collectivities Association] is indicative. In my opinion, we deserved the presidency because the new president is a mayor not a councilor. However, Acte is a fine tool, not a system to find sinecures and I am pleased that the president said textile is not a mature sector. Because, between sustainability and new

Premetto che sono per la più ampia integrazione a tutti i livelli, professionale, sociale, economica e quindi anche nel lavoro. Il futuro sta nel capirsi ma per farlo bisogna essere in due, come tra fidanzati, e avere un obiettivo da perseguire con tutte le energie e per ora non ho la percezione che questo stia avvenendo con gli associati cinesi, che sono sì tra 150 e 200, con numeri volubili, ma sono una percentuale ancora bassa rispetto alle 4500 aziende esistenti. La possibilità che ci si possa integrare e diventare l’uno risorsa dell’altro può anche esserci ma c’è bisogno di energie e interventi al di sopra del distretto, ovvero delle istituzioni regionali e nazionali, dai consolati ai tribunali e agli altri enti. E’ lun lavoro lungo ma dobbiamo continuare a crederci.

Tema sostenibilità. In che modo sono toccati i conto terzisti, gli artigiani?

Anche qui si può parlare di reciprocità. Io che voglio aderire ai protocolli ho impegno, spese e sacrifici e poi magari non vendo, chi invece non aderisce o fa finta e imbroglia vende. Così da virtuoso il sistema diventa nocivo perché indebolisce i corretti e rinforza i furbetti o gli scorretti, che poi quando rimangono in pochi e senza concorrenza si mettono in regola. Al mondo ci sono 80 miliardi di capi d’abbigliamento e perché sia possibile smaltirli è necessario l’impegno comune di tutti.

Com’è il rapporto tra distretti? Vi parlate con Biella, Como e gli altri?

Sì, non quanto vorrei ma lo facciamo, a tutti i livelli. Sia tra parenti, ovvero Confartigianato, che tra conoscenti, tutti gli altri compresi i centri di ricerca.

Potremmo fare 100 ma facciamo 50. Quello che è accaduto con Acte è indicativo; secondo me meritavamo la presidenza perché il nuovo presidente (Ulf Olsson, ndr) è un sindaco e non un assessore. Ma Acte è un ottimo strumento, non un sistema per trovare poltrone e mi fa piacere che il presidente abbia detto che il tessile non è un settore maturo perché tra sostenibile e nuovi prodotti, a parità di regole, può diventare più forte di quello che è. E il fatto che molte aziende che hanno delocalizzato stanno tornando indietro lo dimostra. interview 35

products, given the same rules, it can become much stronger than it is now. The fact that many companies that had delocalized are coming back demonstrates that fact.

Relations between business owners and artisans. It seems that tariffs are not the only problem.

The Code of Ethics can be a solution to resolve the ancient problem of contrasting interests. There can be an agreement for a shared interest and the crisis has shown us that infighting between the processors and the mills and even among the processors themselves was all to the advantage of foreign buyers, who caught on to the fact that with a little patience, in two days they managed to strip the price down by 20%. The news is in the fact of collaborating on common interests, by establishing minimum fees, which no one can benefit from by undercutting. This concept is making progress with great fatigue. Years ago, I held assemblies about tariffs and they were all packed. Now, almost no one comes and the auditoriums fill up about aggregations, simplifications, public tenders and energy saving. My motto is ‘better to shut down because we don’t have work than to close after working 16 hours a day’ because this would mean working under the subsistence level. Then, there’s the theme of the regulations, the clever guys who wriggle out of the pacts, the pressure of the institutions on the plants, the permits and authorizations, the bureaucracy, the taxes, the disposal of waste that keeps getting to be more difficult, the lack of certainty about the rules, getting credit, etc.

Why don’t you just give in to pessimism?

I don’t want to be a pessimist, that’s not typical of me and I am also forced not to be because even shutting down takes a lot of money. There’s the case of Serenella Antoniazzi, an associate of ours in Veneto who wrote a book entitled “I don’t want to go bankrupt” that led the way and inspired an amendment to the annual tax law for the creation of a credit fund for companies who have been victims of non-payment. Ninety-three percent of Italian businesses are like that, people who have dedicated their lives to keeping their businesses going. I have to be positive and a realist because it isn’t as if the world is making progress, it’s just starting today. The solution is not to send away our children, but to create the conditions to make them think that possibilities exist to obtain satisfactions. If textile returned to being a profitable sector, it would still be one of the best. If you manage to surpass the level of diffidence, then textile becomes a passion. Seeing a garment you wear being born from a thread of yarn, with someone telling you it’s beautiful is like eating a dish made by Bottura [Michelin 3-star chef in Veneto].

Rapporti tra imprenditori e artigiani. In ballo sembra non esserci solo le tariffe…

Il Codice Etico può essere soluzione per risolvere il problema antico degli interessi contrapposti. Può esserci un accordo per un interesse in comune e la crisi ci ha dimostrato che farci la guerra interna, tra lavorazioni e lanifici ed anche tra lavorazioni e lavorazioni ha avvantaggiato solo i compratori esterni, che hanno capito che con un po’ di pazienza in due giorni riuscivano a strappare un prezzo inferiore del 20%. La novità è nel fatto di collaborare sugli interessi comuni stabilendo anche i compensi minimi sotto i quali non conviene a nessuno scendere. Questo concetto molto faticosamente sta venendo avanti.

Anni fa facevo le assemblee sulle tariffe ed erano affollatissime, adesso non viene quasi nessuno, mentre si riempiono di gente quelle su aggregazioni, semplificazioni, bandi pubblici e risparmio energetico. Il mio motto è ‘meglio chiudere perché non abbiamo lavoro che chiudere dopo aver lavorato 16 ore al giorno’, perché significherebbe aver lavorato sotto il livello di sopravvivenza. Poi c’è il tema delle norme, dei furbetti dei concordati, della pressione delle istituzioni sugli impianti, i permessi e le autorizzazioni, la burocrazia, il fisco, lo smaltimento dei rifiuti sempre più problematico, la mancanza della certezze delle regole, il credito…

Perché non vuol lasciarsi andare al pessimismo?

Non vorrei essere pessimista, tendenzialmente non lo sono e sono anche costretto a non esserlo perché per chiudere ci vogliono tanti soldi. C’è il caso di Serenella Antoniazzi, una nostra associata veneta che ha scritto il libro “Io non voglio fallire” e che ha fatto da traino e spunto per un emendamento alla legge di Stabilità per l’istituzione di un fondo per il credito alle aziende vittime di mancati pagamenti. Il 93% delle aziende italiane è così, fatta da gente che ha speso la vita per farle andare avanti. Devo essere positivo e realista, perché il mondo non è che va avanti, comincia oggi. La soluzione non è mandare via i nostri figli creare i presupposti per far loro pensare che esistono le possibilità per avere soddisfazioni; se il tessile tornasse un settore di guadagno sarebbe ancora uno dei migliori. Perché se superi l’asticella di diffidenza poi il tessile diventa una passione, perché veder nascere da un filo un capo che indossi e qualcuno ti dice che è bello è come mangiare un piatto fatto da Bottura.

Piero, the power Piero, la forza dei giovani of youth di Matteo Grazzini

You find him at all the most important textile-clothing trade fairs, in Italy as in the rest of Europe. And you notice him, for two reasons: the first is the most obvious, his clothes, which are definitely far from the shirt-tie and even the simpler casual sportswear model for fairs; the second, more of an 'insider' viewpoint, is that often his stand has so many customers and visitors that, for us journalists, it’s not always easy to interview him.

It’s Piero Forza Giovane (his calling card...), name in art (and what art) of Piergiovanni Vitalini, owner and founder of Forza Giovane, artisan company of Calcinelli Saltinara, in the Marches, and also owner of Edging, instead in the province of Novara and acquired by Vitalini in 2012. We meet him at Proposte, on the shores of Lake Como, a few days after one of his creative and, in its own way, impressive initiatives: the defense of Made in Italy during the Salone del Mobile in Milan, with flyers, a litter and four models as escort.

You’re always at the fairs; you’re proof that the trade fairs are still the most important showcase.

We do 4 of them, Pitti Filati, Milano Unica, Première Vision and now also Proposte, which is appropriate for the Passamani product, but for a time we also went to Lineapelle. We have a good relationship with customers and so the fairs are a way to see them, have visibility and maybe even discover some new markets.

For example?

Japan seems interesting for the future. It’s a country that hasn’t been so affected by globalization, with less contaminated tastes and the pace we had 5-10 years ago.

So do you often have to adapt the sample or do you always present the same products regardless of the fair?

We bring something more to Première Vision because it is the largest trade fair but in reality every week we add something, regardless of the season because now the seasons are less and less defined. Besides, to be interesting in the market, you always have to offer something new.

Lo trovi in ogni fiera tra quelle più importanti del tessile-abbigliamento, in Italia come nel resto d’Europa. E lo noti, per due motivi: il primo è quello più evidente, l’abbigliamento, che esce decisamente dallo schema camicia-cravatta e anche dal più semplice casual-sportivo da fiera; il secondo, più da ‘addetti ai lavori’, è che spesso il suo stand è pieno di clienti e visitatori al punto che, per noi giornalisti, non sempre è semplice intervistarlo.

E’ Piero Forza Giovane (come da biglietto da visita…), nome d’arte (e che arte) di Piergiovanni Vitalini, titolare e fondatore di Forza Giovane, azienda artigiana di Calcinelli di Saltinara, nelle Marche, ed anche proprietario di Passamani, che invece si trova in provincia di Novara e che è stata acquisita da Vitalini nel 2012. Lo incontriamo a Proposte, sulle rive del lago di Como, pochi giorni dopo una delle sue iniziative creative e, a modo loro, eclatanti: la difesa del made in Italy durante il Salone del Mobile di Milano, con volantini, lettiga e quattro modelle come scorta.

Siete sempre presenti in fiera; siete la dimostrazione che i saloni sono ancora la vetrina più importante…

Ne facciamo 4, ovvero Pitti Filati, Milano Unica, Première Vision ed adesso anche Proposte, che è adatta al prodotto di Passamani, ma per un certo periodo siamo andati anche a Lineapelle. Noi abbiamo un bel rapporto con i clienti e quindi le fiere sono un modo per vederli, per avere visibilità e magari scoprire anche qualche mercato nuovo.

Ad esempio?

Il Giappone mi sembra interessante per il futuro. E’ un Paese che è rimasto abbastanza fuori dalla globalizzazione, hanno gusti meno contaminati e ritmi che noi avevamo 5-10 anni fa.

Quindi dovete adattare spesso il campionario o presentate sempre gli stessi prodotti a prescindere dalla fiera?

Portiamo qualcosa in più a Première Vision, perché è la fiera più grande ma in realtà ogni settimana aggiungiamo qualcosa, senza guardare alla stagionalità perché ormai le stagioni sono sempre meno delineate. D’altronde per essere interessante sul mercato devi sempre offrire qualcosa di nuovo.

Forza Giovane is you, your look and face. But behind it is something more.

I’m the art director but three of us handle creative. Then there are all the others, starting with ten mechanics, almost all young people, who adjust and modify the machines for weaving and spinning, because we use old ones, for which spare parts can’t even be found anymore. I bought one in Casentino that I got functioning, that seemed destined for scrapping.

Then the style office gives color and finesse to the artisans’ work, that we can’t let die. The problem is the price, which is obviously higher than others because we have 80 people, most of them paid to scale, large spaces, ongoing collections.

Is this where your commitment to defending Made in Italy and craftsmanship began?

It’s a cry for help to the institutions but also end users that before buying a product we need to know where it was made, by whom and with what material. Globalization is killing the differences but we Italians are good at finding solutions to problems. In France, many small companies have been saved by big brands that put young people to work with the most experienced supervision. We use this system at Edging, filling it with eager young people who come to us before doing other jobs. The manager, who I communicate with at a distance from the Marches to Piedmont, is a former plumber.

Forza Giovane è lei, con il suo look e la sua faccia. Ma dietro c’è qualcosa di più…

La direzione artistica è mia ma a creare siamo in tre. Poi ci sono tutti gli altri, a iniziare dai dieci meccanici, quasi tutti giovani, che aggiustano e modificano le macchine per tessere e filare, perché ne usiamo di vecchie, di quelle per le quali i pezzi di ricambio neanche si trovano più.

Ne ho comprata una in Casentino che ho rimesso in funzione e sembrava destinata alla rottamazione. Poi l’ufficio stile dà colore e finezza al lavoro degli artigiani, che non possiamo far morire. Il problema diventa il prezzo, che ovviamente è più alto rispetto ad altri perché abbiamo 80 persone, quasi tutte pagate a tariffa, grandi spazi, collezioni continue…

Nasce qui il suo impegno a difesa del made in Italy e dell’artigianalità?

E’ un grido di aiuto verso le istituzioni ma anche verso il cliente finale che prima di comprare un prodotto deve sapere dove è stato fatto, da chi e con quale materiale. La globalizzazione sta uccidendo le differenze ma noi italiani siamo bravi a trovare le soluzioni ai problemi. In Francia tante piccole aziende sono state salvate da un grande marchio che ha messo i giovani a lavorare con la supervisione dei più esperti. Noi abbiamo attuato questo sistema a Passamani, riempiendola di giovani volenterosi che prima di venire da noi facevano altri lavori. Il responsabile, col quale mi relaziono a distanza dalle Marche al Piemonte, è un ex idraulico….

Tintoria Silli, a new slant on its Tintoria Silli, una "nuova" tradizione

Documents conserved in Palazzo Datini in Prato, the archive of the ancient city, indicate that the Silli family already plied the trade of dyers in 1790. At the end of the 19th century, the artisan dye works of Giuseppe Silli, Renzo’s grandfather, were doing good business.

Alessandro Silli carried on with the tradition and managed to overcome the grave crises that struck the textile sector in 1922 and 1929, by means of intelligence and hard work. Renzo Silli’s moment came in 1943. He formed a one-man company and, despite the post-war difficulties, the company got off at a good pace. The company was soon a success thanks to the energy he invested, which grew its turnover. At the start of the 1960’s, the old factory on Via del Gelsomino was judged insufficient and a new factory was built at Via Galcianese no. 79, which opened in 1963 and still houses the dye works.

This year, 2016, has been full of news. After acquiring additional dyeing devices and new drying systems to expand the dyeing capacity, production now proceeds at full speed. The cones department has been doubled allowing the company to finish up to 150 quintals per day of cones and tops.

“We are satisfied,” says Giorgio Silli, “with the service we offer our customers and how we have begun to grow again over the past few months.

The professional qualifications of our technicians and the partial renewal of our structure make us a trustworthy and indispensable partner in our district and beyond.”

Tintoria Silli has done more than to invest just economic resources in its sector. Instead, it has courageously followed a hiring plan, a rarity at this point in history. “The perfect synchronism between technicians, dyers and workers makes us a team that is determined to win every challenge that textiles of the future will present to us in the fields of knitting and weaving for clothing or home furnishing fabrics” is Silli’s conclusion.

Da documenti esistenti in Palazzo Datini a Prato, risulta che la famiglia Silli esercitasse già il mestiere del tintore nel 1790. Alla fine del 1800 era in piena attività la tintoria artigianale di Giuseppe Silli, nonno di Renzo. Nella stessa via continuò la tradizione Alessandro Silli, che riuscì a superare con intelligenza e duro lavoro le gravissime crisi che colpirono il tessile nel 1922 e nel 1929. Nel 1943 fu il momento di Renzo Silli: creò una sua ditta individuale e, malgrado le difficoltà del dopoguerra, l’azienda prese subito un notevole impulso. La ditta si affermò con rapidità grazie alle energie profuse che facevano aumentare il volume di affari. All’inizio degli anni ’60 il vecchio stabilimento in via del Gelsomino era ormai insufficiente e nel 1963 fu costruita la nuova fabbrica in via Galcianese 79, che ospita tutt’ora la tintoria.

Il 2016 è stato un anno pieno di novità. Dopo l’acquisto di altri apparecchi di tintura e di nuovi impianti di asciugatura per ampliare la capacità tintoriale è arrivato il momento della produzione a pieno ritmo; il reparto rocche è stato raddoppiato permettendo all’azienda di nobilitare fino a 150 quintali al giorno fra Rocche e Tops.

La Tintoria Silli non si è limitata ad investire risorse economiche nel proprio settore, ma ha coraggiosamente portato avanti un piano di assunzioni, cosa assai rara in questo periodo storico. With the weather gone completely crazy – late spring, winter that is warmer than autumn and summer with tropical force downpours – we want to stick with something classic and have identified a tasty snack typical of the hot seasons as a common denominator for our tour of the cities that host the main textile fairs: ice cream.

What are the best ice cream parlors in Florence, London, Milan and Paris? This is one of those questions that is likely to remain without a definitive answer. Like every other mass consumption food, ice cream has to satisfy the taste buds of millions of people, so there is no absolute best. Nonetheless, there are ice cream parlors that because of their tradition, official awards, reviews and word of mouth merit a mention.

Pitti Filati opens one week after the official start of the summer and Florence has a lot to offer to anyone looking for a taste of something cool for the palate after the day’s work. If there’s a name that everyone (or almost everyone) agrees on, that is Vivoli, the traditional ice cream shop at Via dell’Isola delle Stinche no. 7r, near Santa Croce. A shrine for ice cream fans for eighty years or so. The Badiani ice cream parlor (Viale dei Mille no. 20/r) dedicated an exclusive flavor to architect Bernardo Buontalenti in 1979, rich with fresh cream and pastry crème. That is where the typical traditional ice cream flavor of Florence was born. If awards make the difference, the next mandatory stop will be the Rinaldini Shop, at Via dei Banchi no. 11. It has won the world cup for ice cream twice. They offer sixteen flavors of creams and fruit ices, all strictly homemade. At Carapina Con un meteo sempre più impazzito, tra primavere che ritardano, inverni che sono più miti degli autunni ed estati con acquazzoni tropicali cerchiamo di restare sul classico, individuando in un alimento tipico delle stagioni più calde il filo conduttore del nostro tour tra le città che ospitano le maggiori fiere del tessile: il gelato.

Quali sono le migliori gelaterie a Firenze, Londra, Milano e Parigi? E’ una di quelle domande destinate a restare senza una risposta certa: come ogni altro alimento di massa il gelato è soggetto al gusto di milioni di persone e quindi non esiste il migliore in assoluto. Ma ci sono gelaterie che per storia, riconoscimenti ufficiali, recensioni e tradizione meritano una citazione.

Pitti Filati inizia una settimana dopo il via ufficiale all’estate e Firenze ha molto da offrire a chi cerca un po’ di freddo per il palato dopo una giornata di lavoro. Se c’è un nome che mette tutti (o quasi) d’accordo quello è Vivoli, storica gelateria in via dell’Isola delle Stinche 7r, a due passi da Santa Croce. Meta obbligata per gli amanti del gelato più o meno da ottanta anni. Poi la gelateria Badiani (Viale dei Mille 20/r), che nel 1979 dedicò all’architetto Bernardo Buontalenti un gelato con panna e crema. Fu così che nacque il gusto tipico della tradizione gelataia della città.

(Piazza Oberdan no. 2r) you will find ice cream made only from fresh fruit of the season, fresh whole milk and selections of the best cocoa and coffee beans from Central America. La Carraia, the ice cream shop at Piazza Nazario Sauro no. 25r, has been a landmark for almost 25 years. Known for its cheesecake with wild strawberries, it also proposes the cottage cheese and pears combination. Finally, a name that many European cities have in common: Grom. In Florence, you’ll find it in Via del Campanile at the corner of Via delle Oche. Try the Grom cream: caramel with Himalayan pink salt.

It may be the climate, or just a different tradition, but London was not famous for ice cream for a long time. This trend seems to have broken off in recent years and a few fine ice cream shops have popped up on the shores of the Thames, a number of which thanks to Italians. This is the case of the three Scoop shops (Covent Garden, Soho and South Kensington), where you’ll find ingredients from around the world such as cocoa from Ecuador and Marsala from Sicily. Danieli is another Italian name and they specialize in low-fat ice cream and fruit sherbets that go as fast as they can make them all summer. They have four shops: two in Richmond, one in Kingston and one on Shaftesbury Avenue. A mix of traditional flavors instead, in the seven Oddono’s shops: vanilla from Madagascar, Valrhona chocolate from France and pistachios from Sicily are just some of the ingredients. There’s a Neapolitan atmosphere at Zazà, on Canary Wharf, Portobello Road and at the Westfield Shopping Centre. In addition to ice cream, they obviously offer great coffee too. Finally, La Gelatiera has two shops: one at Covent Garden and the other in the East Village. Their inspiration is slow food, with ingredients from the five continents: vanilla from Madagascar, Huehuetenango coffee and the Sharon Fruit, the typical persimmon of Israel.

There are hundreds of places in Milan where you can enjoy great ice cream, so we beg readers to forgive any omissions due to lack of space!

Aficionados consider the Gelateria della Musica (Via Pestalozzi no. 4) one of the special places and, in fact, there is always a line at the counter. gelateria. Scelta tra sedici gusti tra creme e frutta, rigorosamente artigianali. Nome italiano anche per Danieli, che vende gelati a basso contenuto di grassi e sorbetti che vanno a ruba d’estate. Ha quattro punti vendita: due a Richmond, uno a Kingston e uno in Shaftesbury Avenue. Mix di tradizioni invece nei sette negozi Oddono’s. Vaniglia del Madagascar, cioccolato Valrhona dalla Francia e i pistacchi della Sicilia tra gli ingredienti. Atmosfera napoletana da Zazà, a Canary Wharf, in Portobello Road e al Westfield Shopping centre. Non solo gelato ma anche, ovviamente, caffè. Flavors include fresh sheep cheese with citrus and chocolate with pink salt. Another name that is not yet widely known is Misciolgo (Via Benedetto Varchi no. 4). The counter is enormous and so is the choice. They also sell homemade, fresh fruit ice on a stick. Cioccolati Italiani at Via De Amicis no. 25 is true to its name: cones have chocolate-filled points and almost all flavors derive from cocoa. The same theme can be found at Il Massimo del Gelato (Via Castelvetro no. 18) too, with more than ten chocolate flavors. For those who don’t love cocoa, there are fresh fruit flavors. The Negozietto del Gelato (Alzaia Naviglio Pavese no. 6) has little hidden treasures like orange mint or honey nougat sherbets. The two Botteghe di Leonardo (Via Solari no. 43 and Via Borsieri no. 11) make their own wafers too. If you want to stay in Rho, Bagutto at Via Madonna no. 83, not far from the fair, is one of the best in metropolitan Milan. They offer fifty flavors with their suggestions for the creams and five variations on chocolate.

One place where ice cream is never missing is Paris. The first stop might be Hugo & Victor (7, rue Gomboust), in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, where the ice cream, vanilla with Tahiti coconut, is spread on financiers (a French almond cake). The next stop is a must: Berthillon, the Parisian ice cream institution in the middle of the Seine (31, rue Saint-Louis en l’Ile). Despite fame and tradition, it hasn’t become a haven for tourists only, quite the contrary. Caramel and ginger, lemon and coriander, gianduia [filberts and chocolate] and orange, and marron glacé are specialties along side all the classics. Italy makes its presence known everywhere in the world so make your way to Mary (1, rue Charles François Dupuis), where the pink decor inspires relax. Some flavors you’ll find here only: avocado, orange blossom or green apple. Nice even to the thinnest wallets. And then to Pozzetto, in the Marais, with an Italian address too (39, rue du Roi de Sicile). The queen is chocolate chip. At 39, rue Cler you’ll find Martine Lambert, straight from Deauville where Parisians go for a jaunt and she brought the sherbets and ice cream made of the milk from Normandy with her. Finish up with an exotic touch at La Tropicale (180, boulevard Vincent Auriol) near Place d’Italie: ice cream and sherbets of tropical mandarins, blue curacao, coconut rum and pineapple, strawberry and mint.

Tra i gusti la ricotta di pecora agli agrumi e il cioccolato al sale rosa. Nome ancora non notissimo quello di Misciolgo (via Benedetto Varchi 4): grande bancone, imbarazzo della scelta. Anche i ghiaccioli sono fatti in casa con frutta fresca. Cioccolati Italiani in via De Amicis 25 tiene fede al nome e ha coni col fondo riempito di cioccolato, così come derivano dal cacao quasi tutti i gusti proposti. Stessa ‘linea’ anche a Il Massimo del Gelato (via Castelvetro 18) con più di dieci gusti al cacao. Chi non lo ama trova sapori alla frutta fresca. Il Negozietto del Gelato (alzaia Naviglio Pavese 6) “nasconde” sorbetti all’arancia e mentuccia o torroncino al miele. Poi Le botteghe di Leonardo (via Solari 43 e via Borsieri 11) dove vengono realizzate “in casa” anche le cialde. Chi invece non vuol allontanarsi da Rho ha a disposizione uno dei top del Milanese, Bagutto, in via Madonna 83, non troppo lontana dalla Fiera: una cinquantina di gusti con consigli per creme e le cinque varianti di cioccolato.

Dove il gelato non manca mai è Parigi. La prima tappa all’ombra della torre Eiffel potrebbe essere Hugo & Victor (7, rue Gomboust) dove il gelato viene spalmato sul financier, il muffin francese e viene proposto un gusto vaniglia e cocco di Tahiti. Poi il passo, obbligatorio, è quello verso Berthillon, l’istituzione parigina del gelato in mezzo alla Senna (31, rue Saint-Louis en l'Ile): la storia e la fama non l’hanno trasformato in rifugio di soli turisti, anzi… Oltre ai gusti classici da segnalare caramello e zenzero, limone e coriandolo, gianduia e arancio, marron glacè. Ma l’Italia che si fa conoscere all’estero non può mancare ed allora ecco Mary (1, rue Charles François Dupuis), dove gli interni rosa regalano anche relax: tra gli introvabili il gelato all’avocado o fior d’arancio o al gusto di mela verde. Piace anche ai portafogli più leggeri. E poi Pozzetto, nel Marais, italiano anche nell’indirizzo (39, rue du Roi de Sicile): la regina è la stracciatella. Al 39 di rue Cler c’è Martine Lambert, che arriva da Deauville, luogo di scampagnate dei parigini, e che si è portata dietro i sorbetti e i gelati fatti con latte della Normandia.
