STEEL ANDALUMINUM TARIFFSTO RAISETO 50%

On June 3rd, US President Donald Trump has announced a tariff rise to 50% of section 232 on steel and aluminum imports, doubling previous rates. While supported by domestic steel manufacturers and many in the US seeking better-paying jobs, the decision has sparked global concern; the EU may impose countertariffs worth €26 billion On the other hand, the UK has been granted a temporary exemption pending a trade deal.

Moreover, President Claudia Sheinbaum has warned of reciprocal countermeasures unless an agreement is reached. Mexico's Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard traveled DC to negotiate an exemption on Friday, June 6th. These tariffs risk straining US-Mexico relations and could hurt Mexico’s steel and aluminum export sectors

Lastly, the tariff rise could disrupt exports, pressure domestic industries, and deepen trade tensions. Mexico’s response may involve legal challenges, retaliatory tariffs, potentially impacting economic cooperation with the US.
