Farmers and transport drivers across Mexico have staged widespread roadblocks and customs blocks to demand fair prices, safer highways, and stronger support for the agricultural sector. Demonstrations have disrupted major routes in several states, despite repeated calls from the government to end the blockades. Authorities insist that dialogue remains open, noting more than 300 meetings with transport leaders and over 200 with farming groups
The dispute intersects with the government’s upcoming water law proposal, which seeks to reassert national control over water resources, expand access, and end practices such as selling irrigation water to municipalities. Officials say improved irrigation systems funded by public investment should allow producers to return unused water, though some resist these changes
The persistence of the blockades, even as negotiations continue and some routes are gradually reopened, reflects deeper frustration in rural regions after years of economic losses, insecurity and mistrust in government institutions. These interruptions underscore growing discontent among multiple sectors that feel their demands have not been adequately addressed by the government.

The Congress has opened a series of working groups to refine the proposed tariff package that would impose duties of 10% to 50% on more than 1,400 tariff codes from countries without trade agreements. Lawmakers and business chambers are reviewing exceptions, sensitive sectors and potential risks for industries dependent on specific foreign suppliers The Secretary of Economy has emphasized that the plan was designed with technical safeguards, ensuring that none of the included inputs show dependence of 50% or more on a single non-treaty partner.
These discussions highlight rising caution over supply chain vulnerabilities and competitive pressures from Asia. The review process underscores deepening unease among domestic industries seeking stronger safeguards as global trade dynamics shift.

As the end of the ordinary legislative session approaches, on December 15, the Chamber of Deputies is preparing to close with an agenda centered on public security, environmental protection, regulatory updates, and the longanticipated labor reform to reduce the workweek from 48 to 40 hours.
Legislators will hold back-to-back in-person sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday to advance several priority bills. A major expectation is President Sheinbaum’s initiative to reduce the workweek to 40 hours that has not yet been formally submitted, but and once received, could be fast-tracked. Some of the initiatives that could be prioritized are the updated Extortion Law, recently modified in the Senate and the Circular Economy Law Also pending are the Water Law, the Health Law, and the Tariff Law

Five justices of Mexico’s Supreme Court (SCJN) expressed support for allowing the review of cases that already have final rulings. While the formal discussion centered on applying “nullity of a concluded trial” in a commercial case, the underlying debate focused on whether the judiciary should have the authority to reopen matters previously settled at the highest levels
President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly opposed reopening final judgments, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability and clarity in judicial decisions.
