Make It a Surprise!

» WHILE MOST MEETING PLANNERS organize each aspect of an event down to the table arrangements and time of guest arrival, adding an element of surprise and handing the reins off to mystery professionals can intrigue attendees and keep them on their toes. Mystery Trip, a Los Angeles-based team-bonding event-planning company, does just that. “The mystery is that none of the guests know what they’re doing until they experience it,” says Dave Green, chief mysterious officer for the company.

From behind-the-scenes tours and yoga on the beach to sailing regattas and hot-air ballooning, the opportunities are endless. Mystery Trip took a team from Netflix around Griffith Park in Los Angeles and filmed a cheesy ’90s sitcom intro; and an international group from YouTube was taken to the studio where the song “We Are the World” was recorded.

“By keeping it a mystery … it levels the playing field,” Green notes, emphasizing that the goal of this planning strategy is to have participants be their most authentic selves and truly engage with each other. The company is accessible nationwide and can host groups of 10 to 250 just about anywhere, both off-site or on-site at a hotel or event venue.

When creating these custom-made experiences, Mystery Trip connects with clients via a kick-off call to get to know the group, who they are, and what they’re looking for. The company then creates an itinerary from the information they receive. Once the activities are approved, the Mystery Trip teams organize the transportation, meals, and activities. “All they have to do is show up and have a good time,” Green says. “My favorite part of the job is that I get people at their best. They’re out of the office, having a good time, and they’re exploring.” –Amanda

FOLLOW THE ARTICHOKE TRAIL

Maybe little-known to some, nearly two-thirds of the world’s artichokes come from one small city along California’s Monterey Bay. Castroville, home to just 6,500 residents, is dubbed the “Artichoke Capital of the World” and is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year.

The Salinas Valley that surrounds Castroville is known as the “Salad Bowl of the World,” and groups can experience the tasty thistle species unique to Monterey through the Artichoke Trail and the annual Artichoke Festival held in June. “The Artichoke Trail features 40 stops where visitors can enjoy California’s state vegetable in many forms, from touring the artichoke fields and farm stands to inventive artichoke dishes,” explains Teresa Savage, vice president of business development for the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The purpose of the trail is to promote agritourism. … It spotlights one of Monterey County’s unique ingredients and aims to demystify the vegetable.”

For those wanting to participate, a digital interactive trail map is available to help guide visitors from spot to spot. Attractions include the world’s largest artichoke statue and Ag Venture Tours & Consulting’s Pezzini Farm Walk in Castroville. Meet with the local growers at the Alisal Certified Farmers Market in Salinas (among several others), and experience all the flavors the artichoke offers at local restaurants like Baja Cantina & Grill in Carmel Valley, Fish Hopper in Monterey, and Flying Artichoke in Salinas (many of which take group reservations).

Mark your calendars for this year’s Artichoke Festival at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. “The 2023 festival, themed ‘Thistle Be Fun,’ will feature a wide-ranging variety of entertainment, including Chef’s Demos, a farmers market, wine tastings, a Saturday Night comedy show, and a quilting challenge,” Savage adds.

With Monterey County’s cool coastal climate and fertile soil like the Mediterranean (the native home of the veggie), California artichokes are tried and true—and Savage emphasizes that “Nothing compares to sampling an ingredient from the very place it’s from!” –Amanda

MENDOCINO GROVE PROVIDES PLUSH CAMPING

» MENDOCINO GROVE, a luxury camping experience in Northern California, lets visitors who still prefer the comfort of a cozy bed connect with the great outdoors. “We try to walk the line from an outdoor hospitality perspective where it feels like a resort with some of the amenities, but it still allows for that outdoor camping experience,” says Jake Halverson, general manager for Mendocino Grove. “We have a lot of built-in historical knowledge of what it takes for guests to really enjoy their experiences, whether it is for seven days or two days.”

Each tent varies on its configurations, although they all are equipped with heated mattress pads; high-quality linens, duvets, and comforters; as well as outdoor camp chairs, a fire pit, and a picnic table. If each visitor wants their own on-site tent, there is enough space for 75 guests, or up to 135 can stay if there is flexibility to share tents.

“[The camping spots have] all the standard campground accessories with a sprinkle of luxury,” Halverson describes. The luxurious

camp amenities include two bath houses, a dry sauna, massages, a commercial kitchen for pop-up dinner events, an indoor conference space with capacity for 40, an indoor two-bedroom apartment suite, and a complimentary breakfast for all campers.

Within a 25-mile radius from eight California state parks, Mendocino Grove has a location that is part of the fun, says Marne Moran, event coordinator at the campground. “We are in really close proximity to the historic town [of Mendocino], which is one of the greatest assets because you can be tucked into the redwood forests, and half a mile down the road you can go out for a fabulous gourmet dinner, go shopping in really cute boutiques, or go on [a] guided tour of the town,” she says. Other popular activities—which Mendocino Grove will work to arrange for groups—include horseback riding, charter boat fishing, sea cave kayak tours, canoeing on Big River, and scenic rides on the Skunk Train. –Ava Diaz

The 12-acre Miramonte Indian Wells Resort & Spa, home to 215 guest rooms and 35,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor event space, launched a “Taste of Guadalajara” beverage experience for groups to take a tasting tour of tequilas and mezcals from Guadalajara, Mexico.

“You learn [about] … what you’re actually sampling and tasting, why it tastes that way, what makes it that way, how long it has aged, and what type of agave plant it actually came from,” explains Robert Hatfield, director of sales and marketing for the resort. The experience is available for groups staying at the hotel and can be reserved as a team-building activity for up to 25 guests.

Additional on-site activities include The Well Spa, three saltwater pools, and two culinary destinations: Citrus & Palm and The Tavern. The resort will undergo renovations to transition to Tommy Bahama Miramonte Resort & Spa beginning this fall. The restaurant and bar area, as well as some of the guest suites, will also be refreshed. –Amanda

A Little History, a Lot of Nature

Gather at the roots of California’s origins at the state’s national parks and historic sites

» CALIFORNIA IS ABUNDANT in access to Mother Nature and historic sites that tell the stories of the state’s rich past. Home to nine national parks from the towering granite monoliths at Yosemite National Park in the north to the sprawling ecosystems of the Mojave and Colorado deserts that compose Joshua Tree National Park in the south, the landscapes are endless—and all offer memorable settings for events and activities. And while these national parks tell the stories of the land’s evolution, there are also several historic sites sprinkled across the Golden State that embody California’s urban development as a coastal powerhouse—such as Fort Point National Historic Site in San Francisco and El Pueblo de Los Ángeles Historical Monument in Los Angeles.

HEAD TO THE SIERRA

Yosemite National Park is tucked into California’s Sierra Nevada and encompasses some 750,000 acres of protected parkland. Famed for its sequoia trees and looming granite cliffs, it is one of the most visited national parks in the United States with over 3 million visitors in 2022. Gather your group at the historic Evergreen Lodge, which is just a mile away and offers plenty of green space for groups to congregate outside.

“Evergreen sits on the western border of Yosemite National Park, and it’s [this] ‘hidden gem’ fifth entrance that most people don’t talk about or know about, which is the Hetch Hetchy

Entrance,” explains Teri Marshall, director of marketing and communications for Evergreen. The lodge was built nearly a century ago as housing for railroad workers forging the Hetch Hetchy Railroad, and it’s now home to 89 cabins for overnight accommodations alongside on-site activities and dining options. It’s open year-round with a temporary six-week closure in January, reopening every Presidents Day weekend.

Private group experiences are curated by the Evergreen team, which can include on-site scavenger hunts, explorations of nearby nature trails, or guided excursions to Yosemite. The property comfortably hosts groups of 40 to 60, and its restaurant for up to 80 people boasts historic charm as the oldest part of the lodge.

“Everything is designed to get people outside and reconnect with nature and reconnect with people,” says Marshall. “So, when we say it’s ‘meetings of a different nature,’ it’s a fun play on words but it’s [also] the truth.”

Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks in Tulare County are managed together. Known for the namesake sequoia trees—most notably the General Sherman Sequoia Tree in Sequoia National Park, which stands at 102 feet in circumference and is estimated to be over 2,000 years old—the national parks bring in visitors from around the globe to see these towering marvels. For groups, the city of Visalia is 45 minutes away with lodging and 114,000 square feet of flexible meeting space at the Visalia Convention Center.

The Sequoia Shuttle operates from Memorial Day to Labor Day and can pick up groups visiting Sequoia National Park from any of Visalia’s hotels. Round-trip tickets are $20 and include the park entrance fee. While the shuttle doesn’t go into Kings Canyon, the park can be accessed from Visalia by car via state Route 63 to state Route 180. Sequoia Sightseeing Tours and Sequoia Guides both offer group tours and guided hikes, and the national park has an in-park shuttle.

GATHER AROUND THE HISTORY OF SAN FRANCISCO

For a more urban setting, San Francisco has both a national park and two national historic sites. At the southern terminus of the Golden Gate Bridge, The Presidio of San Francisco is a 1,500-acre national park along San Francisco Bay that offers rich history, activities and dining nearby, and two notable properties for groups: the Inn at the Presidio and the Lodge at the Presidio. “We’re like a city within a city,” says Terry Haney, managing director of Presidio Lodging, which oversees both properties. The inn has 22 intimate guest rooms and two boardrooms that can host up to 20 people each, and the lodge is a

former military barracks with 42 guest rooms and unobstructed views of the Golden Gate Bridge. There is no dedicated on-site meeting space at the lodge, but a full buyout of the property is available and small meeting sessions can be arranged in the dining room. Nearby attractions include the 14-acre Presidio Tunnel Tops with 25 miles of trails, access to beaches, the Presidio Golf Course, and more. There is also access to Fort Point National Historic Site, which sits near the San Francisco terminus of the Golden Gate Bridge, just steps away from the Presidio. “Although it’s guns never fired shots against any aggressor, it was completed in 1861 to protect the San Francisco Bay’s important commercial and military installations around the time of the Gold Rush,” explains Julian Espinoza, public relations specialist for the national historic site. The San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park is farther east along the bay and is home to a fleet of historic ships from the late 1800s and early 1900s and a maritime museum.

THE WONDERS OF THE SOUTHLAND

In the heart of downtown Los Angeles is the El Pueblo de Los Ángeles Historical Monument, commonly referred to as “The Birthplace of Los Angeles.” The original name of Los Angeles was El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles de Porciúncula, which translates to “The Town of Our Lady the Queen Angels of Porciúncula,” and El Pueblo is the site where the first Native American, African, and European settlers arrived in the area.

Just a 15-minute walk away from El Pueblo is the Conrad Los Angeles, a 305-room property that opened last July. Home to two ballrooms, several terraces, penthouse suites, views of the Walt Disney Concert Hall across the street, an on-site spa, and two culinary options, the Conrad creates an elegant and memorable venue for groups and events. Agua Viva, the outdoor restaurant, has a seasonal menu and flexibility for groups as large as 650. “When you walk out [there], it’s this beautiful wooden-beam structure that completely transforms in the evening [to] where you can see the stars, take in the beautiful sights and sounds—[it’s] great for group events,” says Stephanie Leavitt, director of sales and marketing for the hotel.

Farther inland, Joshua Tree National Park is near several hotels and venues for groups in the Greater Palm Springs area. The new Acrisure Arena opened last December and offers 11,000 seats, and

the Palm Springs Convention Center has 245,000 square feet of space. The Renaissance Esmerelda Resort & Spa, Indian Wells, provides 560 renovated guest rooms—all of which have a balcony— alongside 213,000 square feet of flexible space for events and an on-site spa, fitness center, pool, and six dining options.

At just 35 miles from the national park, the resort makes adding a trip to Joshua Tree easy. “Joshua Tree is where two deserts meet—the Mojave and the Colorado,” explains Jacob Kendrick, director of sales and marketing for the resort. “It’s truly the unique landscape and the flora and fauna that make it a really special location.”

Kendrick encourages groups to experience the evening and nighttime stargazing tours because Joshua Tree is an internationally recognized dark sky park. “You’re going to see constellations, star clusters, and even our nearest galaxies,” he explains. “The skies here in the valley are truly something that you can’t miss.”

It’s clear to see the abundance of nature and history offered by these sites across California, and a visit to any one of them in between meetings is sure to leave attendees with a yearning to return.

PALM SPRINGS

The 27,000-square-foot Acrisure Arena is the newest venue in the Greater Palm Springs area and the first large indoor venue in the county. Designed for hockey and optimized for concerts with a capacity of 11,000, the arena features four premium hospitality clubs and event spaces that include a 10,000-square-foot outdoor compound; 17,000-square-foot ice rink; and more.

The iconic Empire Polo Club in Indio has more than 250 acres of rose gardens, polo fields, lush palm groves, and a

tropical lake, creating a stunning backdrop for small groups of 15 to large-scale events of 90,000. GREATER PALM SPRINGS & THE COACHELLA VALLEY

Long before Hollywood arrivals put their own spin on it, the Coachella Valley was a fertile desert oasis for the Cahuilla People, the first known inhabitants of the area who have flourished there for centuries. Today, the magic of the desert still hangs in the warm, dry air. “There’s something unique and intangible about Palm Springs,” says Darin Roper, director of business development for Palm Springs at Access Destination Services. “People’s body, mind, and spirit react to the desert. They come and fall in love with it.”

Metate Ranch Events by Desert Adventures in Palm Desert is a sprawling 800acre ranch that provides a serene desert experience for guests, from horseback riding to Jeep tours to a re-created Cahuilla village on the site of the original Native homestead. If you’re looking for a touch of old Hollywood glamour, the Twin Palms Estate—once owned by Frank Sinatra—is a midcentury-modern property that can accommodate up to 200 guests. Or, look to the sky for more stars: The Rancho Mirage Library & Observatory can be rented for groups with a stargazing tour and a dinner under the night sky.

Greater Palm Springs is filled with unique team-building activities as well. Try Paint with Superbloom, located in Palm Springs’ Uptown District, where participants can create their own masterpieces by splattering paint at canvases. Sunny Cycle Palm Springs provides pedalpowered trolleys for 16 people and is a great way to barhop as a group.

LONG BEACH

Long Beach has been the home of the Queen Mary since 1967 and the Long Beach Grand Prix since 1975. Today, LBC (an acronym for Long Beach City that locals use) has a growing reputation for its diverse culinary offerings and thriving craft beer scene.

Long Beach is an oceanfront playground with ferries to Catalina Island and a wealth of aquatic activities to choose from. Visitors can get up close and personal with penguins, and touch sharks and rays at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Team building goes next level when whale spouts and tail flukes are spotted. Harbor Cruises take groups out to spot humpback, gray, and blue whales, as well as the Queen Mary and the coastline.

Home to the largest Cambodian population in the United States, Long Beach’s Cambodia Town is filled with the flavors and aromas of authentic Khmer cuisine. The walkable Second Street in the Belmont Shore area is loaded with shopping boutiques with bars and restaurants to match. Roe Seafood is a stylish bistro that serves the fresh bounty of the local waters. Belmont Brewing Co. was the city’s first craft brewer opening in 1990, and the later opening of Beachwood Brewing in 2011 kicked off a brewery explosion in the city.

The Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center has 400,000 square feet of space and is equipped to handle events of all sizes, from intimate meetings to large-scale conventions and expos. For those looking to stay near the convention center, there are several hotels within walking distance, including the Hyatt Regency Long Beach, the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel, and The Westin Long Beach.

OCEANSIDE

Oceanside, as its name indicates, sits along the Pacific Ocean—so it’s no surprise that the city’s landmark feature reaches out into the sea. “The historic Oceanside Pier has served as a gathering place for visitors and the community for over 130 years,” says Leslee Gaul, CEO of Visit Oceanside. “It has the special distinction of being the longest over-water wooden pier on the West Coast, and is an ideal spot for viewing sea life, fishing, taking a leisurely stroll, watching surfers, and, of course, catching a breathtaking sunset.”

What makes Oceanside unique is its Spanish and military heritage—with the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton neighboring the city. Off-base, the military theme can be experienced around town at places such as the Top Gun House at the Mission Pacific Hotel, which boasts memorabilia from the 1986 blockbuster, and Arcade Tattoo, a tattoo parlor that doubles as a museum of military tattoo art over the decades.

For those seeking adventure, catch a wave with surfing lessons at Oceanside Harbor. The small swells and lack of riptides make it a great place to learn. The Oceanside Museum of Art focuses on the contemporary art of Southern California and can be rented for groups of up to 250. The historic wing is an Irving Gill-designed Mission Revival National Historic Landmark.

The Rooftop Bar at Mission Pacific Hotel is a great place for an afternoon libation and provides gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and Oceanside Pier. For a more upscale dining experience, 333 Pacific offers an elegant setting for steak and seafood with panoramic ocean views. And for Italian cuisine and outdoor seating, Blade 1936 is a quirky spot with a rich history as the former residence of the Blade Tribune newspaper.

OXNARD

Oxnard is a gem of a beach town, known for its postcard-perfect harbor, Victorian architecture, and some of the best taquerias in the state. Oxnard recently expanded the Oxnard Taco Trail, comprised of dozens of local taquerias, restaurants, and taco trucks. Julie Mino Buffo, president and CEO of Visit Oxnard, says, “Oxnard is a vibrant city full of rich culture and history, with so much to offer groups—from delicious food and drink to engaging activities—all in a picturesque destination.”

Groups can hold events on the Scarlett Belle Paddlewheel Riverboat or check out classic and exotic automobiles at two of SoCal’s premier auto museums: Mullin Automotive Museum and The Murphy Auto Museum. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are bike and surrey rentals along the beach path, and Jet Skiing or kayaking through the Channel Islands Harbor. Ride in a Venetian gondola through the Seabridge Marina or rent a Duffy Electric Boat to explore the harbor.

A unique lodging option for groups is the new Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach, a Curio Collection by Hilton. As Southern California’s only all-suite beachfront resort, it provides 23,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space and sweeping ocean views.

SACRAMENTO

Sacramento calls itself “Americas’s Farm-to-Fork Capital” with good reason. The city is surrounded by 1.5 million acres of active farmland, so groups can dine on meals made from the freshest ingredients. Sacramento’s food and drink scene is growing in prestige, with recent James Beard nominees cooking at places like Localis, Paragary’s, and Binchoyaki Izakaya Dining.

With its Mediterranean climate, Sacramento is a great outdoor city. It has more than 30 miles of paved bike trails along the scenic American River Parkway, and many hotels have bikes available for guests. SacTown Bites is a popular culinary walking tour that takes visitors on a journey through some of the city’s most exciting foodie hot spots. For fun suds and steps, the Sac Brew Boat is a pedal-powered tiki boat that lets groups of 16 cruise the Sacramento River while enjoying the local brews. One of the things that makes Santa Ana so charming is its well-preserved Victorian and Craftsman architecture, which can be seen in both the French Park and Floral Park neighborhoods. The city’s downtown area—which maintains an incredible Walk Score of 99—also features art deco buildings, including the first Orange County courthouse.

The Santa Ana Train Station features conference rooms and a beautiful lobby that can be rented for events. Other venues for hire include the Lyon Air Museum, the Heritage Museum of Orange County, and The Frida Cinema—Orange County’s only nonprofit art house movie venue.

SANTA BARBARA

Resort & Spa in Palm Springs, groups can indulge in the ultimate chef’s table experience at the reopened T&T Innovation Kitchen program, an experimental culinary activity where meals are cooked directly in front of participants.

“This experience is carefully crafted each night by our chefs who also host the entire affair, sharing and commenting on the art and style of each course in the beautiful indoor-outdoor venues,” says Eric Theiss, executive chef for the resort. The kitchen originally opened in December 2018 and recently reopened for the current season, providing availability for private buyouts for groups of 60 reception-style or 35 for a sit-down dinner. Theiss explains that the kitchen can also take direction from planners to create a customized event to match a particular theme or vibe.

One of the experience options is the Chefs Custom Dinner experience, which offers a custom, chef’s choice five-course menu and an optional five-course wine pairing to complement each dish. The kitchen ensures sustainable practices with fresh and local ingredients in each meal, and some are sourced directly from the property’s herb garden just outside the kitchen, where the resort grows plants like lavender, rosemary, thyme, and mint.

“T&T disrupts traditional notions of what a hotel restaurant should be,” says Theiss. “The experimental culinary outlet

provides a canvas for creativity through a menu [that rotates daily and is] inspired by the time and temperature of the day (hence [the name], T&T) and celebrates the raw talent of both new and longstanding chefs to contribute a unique recipe during menu development each day.”

And the options don’t end at a fancy multicourse meal—the chefs can create customized itineraries for groups, from cocktail tastings to baking classes, allowing the culinary creativity of participants’ to thrive. “We hope the concept inspires those in attendance through both the teamwork element and the creativity it delivers by bringing a new level of culinary engagement to the Coachella Valley,” he adds.

The resort also offers ample guest rooms, amenities, and event space to gather before or after your flavorful escapade in the kitchen. After undergoing a redesign in 2021, the resort now features 884 guest rooms— including 101 luxury suites—that have spacious open floor plans, mountaininspired murals, and modern furnishings. The redesign also welcomed the debut of the Sinatra Ballroom, which boasts 25,000 square feet of flexible event space and honors the last public performance of Frank Sinatra, who performed at the resort in 1995.

REGENT HOTELS & RESORTS DEBUTS IN THE AMERICAS

Joining IHG Hotels & Resorts in 2018 as an upscale luxury brand, Regents Hotels & Resorts presents storied properties across the globe—and now the first location in the Americas, Regent Santa Monica Beach, will debut this year just steps from the Santa Monica Pier.

“We’re thrilled that Regent Santa Monica Beach will be the first destination to open in the Americas,” says Tom Rowntree, vice president of global luxury & lifestyle brands for IHG. “Regent Santa Monica Beach is poised to open following a complete transformation in late 2023 … [and] will mark the historic return of Regent to Los Angeles and become Regent’s Americas flagship.”

NACE Greater Palm Springs Members Say Bon Appétit

The La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta welcomed 40 guests and members of the Greater Palm Springs Chapter of the National Association of Catering & Events (NACE) to its PGA West Mountain Dunes Clubhouse in March for a true French rendezvous. The event, called “The Art of Being French,” was hosted by Director of Sales Carly McGarry and spotlighted Executive Chef Herve Glin’s artful menu of French fare on tables adorned with elegant succulent arrangements, which doubled as take-home gifts for attendees. The glorious Santa Rosa Mountains peeking through the clubhouse windows served as a stunning backdrop for the gathering.

Heather Johnston promotes her coastal home as a memorable destination for visitors near and far

Working in the hospitality and tourism industry for her entire career, Heather Johnston has grown accustomed to marketing cool places. Although she enjoys her role as the new executive director for Visit Dana Point, she says some places just naturally market themselves.

While Dana Point is one of many coastal California towns, she notes that it’s the vibrant sea life that sets the city apart from the rest. Home to tons of aweinspiring aquatic creatures, the city is the dolphin- and whale-watching capital of the world and is the first to become a certified Whale Watching Site in the Americas by the World Cetacean Alliance. Capitalizing on the desire to see these animals, she says the local attractions are continuously evolving to cater memorable experiences for meeting-goers and leisure guests—adding that some of the coolest additions have been whale-watching tours in canoes or on paddleboards.

“The hospitality industry is constantly reevaluating what they are doing and being super creative on new offerings to entice new business and make their hotel or destination stand out on their own,” she says.

And to keep up with this everchanging industry, you need an innovative mindset. Luckily for Johnston, that’s first nature— especially when it’s in a place that she treasures so dearly. “You can be so creative in tourism and marketing a destination that you absolutely love. … It is kind of like when you do what you love, then you will never work a day in your life,” she says. “It is a fun job.”

Her seasoned background in the California industry played a key role in her seamless transition into the position. Formerly the head of marketing for Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, she

also worked as the executive director of Torrance Visitors Bureau and the marketing manager for Disneyland Resort. And this isn’t the first time she has promoted Dana Point, previously having served as the executive director at the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce from 2012 to 2017.

Beyond the draw of promoting this intriguing waterside city, she says being a part of the industry is the biggest appeal. “Overall, I think some of the best people work in tourism, and I have always felt like it is a family.”
