Connecting Your Home With the Outdoors
Outdoor living spaces have become one of the most desired features in both new homes and remodeled properties. As homeowners are embracing the outdoors as an extension of the home… they are looking to create comfortable, functional spaces that allow them to relax, entertain, and enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing the comforts of home.
One of the biggest trends is designing outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of the indoors. Large sliding or folding doors, cozy seating areas, and seamless flooring transitions make it easy to move between inside and out. Covered patios, pergolas,
and screened porches are especially popular, providing shade and protection so these areas can be enjoyed yearround.
Outdoor kitchens continue to grow in popularity, giving homeowners a place to cook and entertain while enjoying being outside. From builtin grills and prep space to simple setups with portable carts and seating areas, the goal is to make outdoor dining effortless and inviting. Fire pits and fireplaces are also in high demand, creating a cozy atmosphere for relaxing evenings with family and friends.
Homeowners are embracing low-maintenance materials and thoughtful landscaping to keep these spaces beautiful with less upkeep. Comfortable furniture, soft lighting, and decorative touches like planters, string lights, and privacy screens help make outdoor areas feel like a retreat.
Technology is also playing a role in today’s outdoor living trends. Homeowners are incorporating weatherfriendly lighting, speakers and TVs, turning backyards into multi-purpose spaces for dining, watching movies, or hosting game nights.
Whether building new or renovating an existing home, creating an inviting outdoor living space adds value, comfort, and yearround enjoyment. From quiet mornings with coffee on the patio to hosting friends under the stars, today’s designs make it easy to bring everyday living outside.
Make Your House a Home for a Lifetime
Universal design is a broad term that involves the craft of designing, remodeling, or building a home that’s usable, accessible, comfortable, and safe for people of all ages and abilities without calling unnecessary attention to itself. It’s a growing segment of the remodeling market that’s poised to only get larger.
One of the key benefits of universal design is that it’s designed to suit every need, no matter your age, your height, or your ability. Through universal design, everyone can enjoy the same home.
Below are some of the more common universal design features that are incorporated into today’s new homes as well as aging-in-place renovations. Some of these features just make good sense. Once you bring them into your home, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them.
•No-step entry. Building a step-less entry increases access and convenience without compromising aesthetics for homeowners and guests.
•One-story living. Many homes are incorporating a bedroom and full bath on the main level which is barrier free.
•Wide doorways. Doorways that are 32-36 inches wide let wheelchairs pass through. They also make it easy to move big things in and out of the house.
•Wide hallways. Hallways should be 36-42 inches wide. That way, everyone and everything moves more easily from room to room.
•Thresholds that are flush with the floor make it easy for a wheelchair to get through a doorway. They also keep others from tripping.
•Open and accessible floor space. Everyone feels less cramped. And people in wheelchairs have more space to turn and increase mobility.
•Kitchens designed with multi-level counters, accessible storage, and easy access appliances. Extra undercabinet lights are great to help people see the counters below.
•Floors and bathtubs with non-slip surfaces help everyone stay on their feet. They’re not just for people who are frail. The same goes for handrails on steps and grab bars in bathrooms…as well as comfort height toilets.
•Good lighting helps people with poor vision. And it helps everyone else see better, too.
•Motion-sensor lights make it easier to see, especially when you’re walking down a hallway or set of stairs at night. Nonskid floors help reduce the risk of injury.
•Lever door handles and rocker light switches are great for people with poor hand strength. But others like them too. Try using these devices when your arms are full of packages. You’ll never go back to knobs or standard switches.
•Smart home technology works with multiple personal devices, making it easy for anyone to access and see or hear notifications. Applications include video doorbells, thermostat adjustments, ability to turn appliances and lighting on and off, or even control the blinds.
To learn more about universal design, aging-in-place or to find a building or remodeling professional in the area that holds the national Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation, visit the GBA website at www.GreensboroBuilders.org/Councils.
Building for the Future: Careers in Construction
If you know someone looking for a rewarding career with great pay, long-term stability, and endless opportunities for growth, it’s time to take a closer look at the construction industry. From building new homes and remodeling kitchens to shaping entire neighborhoods and commercial spaces, skilled tradespeople are in high demand—and that demand isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
Across the country, there’s a growing shortage of skilled workers in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and construction management. For young adults exploring their next step, as well as adults considering a career change, construction offers an incredible opportunity to enter a thriving industry where your skills are valued, your work is hands-on, and your career path is limitless.
One of the biggest advantages of a construction career is affordability and speed of training. Unlike traditional four-year college degrees, many skilled trade programs take two years or less and cost a fraction of the price.
Through technical schools, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training, you can earn while you learn— gaining valuable experience without accumulating massive student debt. And the financial rewards are impressive.
The average salaries for skilled trades can range between $50,000 and $80,000, with many professionals earning six figures as they gain certifications, advance in their field, or even launch their own businesses. Beyond the paycheck, construction careers offer something many other industries can’t…job security. With housing and development needs continuing to grow, skilled trades will remain essential for years to come.
Workforce Development Scholarships
To help prepare the next generation of construction professionals, the Greensboro Builders Association partners with area high schools, community colleges, and workforce development organizations to promote career awareness and provide real-world learning opportunities.
Through classroom visits, job site tours, internships and apprenticeships, students and career changers alike can see firsthand what the industry has to offer.
Thanks to the generous support of Association members, we established our Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment this past year and are awarding workforce development scholarships for skilled trades training. These include but are not limited to carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and construction management. Applications are now open for Spring 2026 semester scholarships at area community colleges.
COVID-19 Guidelines for Consumers Touring Parade Homes
The ability to have homes open for the Spring Parade of Homes will be based on current regulatory and CDC guidelines in place at the time of the event. Virtual tours of all Parade homes will be available.
While taking part in the Spring Parade of Homes, safety measures will be in place. Builders are asked to follow CDC guidelines for the safety of the public, as well as their safety, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We are asking all attendees to follow CDC and regulatory guidelines in place at the time of the event.
As an attendee, we ask that you:
• Stay home if you are potentially sick. Anyone displaying COVID-19 symptoms may not be granted access to the home.
• It is suggested that seniors and persons with compromised immune systems not attend this event due to risk of infection.
• Due to the limited number of people allowed in a home at a time and the nature of children to touch surfaces, we ask that children not attend this event.
• Maintain 6’ social distancing guidelines while waiting to enter the home, talking to those working in the home and while touring the home (including while following directional signs inside). This may require waiting to enter a hallway or a room until the group ahead of you has left the area.
• Refrain from touching surfaces and handles in the home.
• Make sure to wear/bring socks with you as you will be asked to slip your shoes off and carry them through the home to leave through a different door than what you entered. If you do not have socks on you may not be allowed to enter a home. (consider bringing a bag to carry your shoes if it is raining)
• Consider bringing your own facemask to wear while in the home.
• Bring hand sanitizer (containing at least 60%
Giving Back to the Community
We are extremely fortunate that industry members give so generously of their time and resources to make a difference in the lives of others in our community. The Greensboro Builders Association participates in numerous community service projects on an ongoing basis, giving of both financial resources and in-kind contributions.
Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat
In 2003, GBA entered into a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro known as Raising Roofs… Builders for Habitat Builders, remodelers, suppliers and trade contractors worked sideby-side to build houses from foundation to dedication in one incredible week...a huge undertaking that could not happen without the support of numerous Association members. This past year we completed construction on our 65th home as we also celebrated the Greensboro Builders Association’s 65th year as a trade association.
We are excited to continue the tradition of helping provide affordable housing for others in our community...and appreciate the generosity of our members who continue to donate building materials and labor to support these initiatives.
ReBuilding Hope
Since 2011, GBA has partnered with Community Housing Solutions to assist with residential renovations and new construction. More than twelve homes have been renovated to ensure homes are warmer, safer, and drier for those in need in our community. Two homes have been completely rehabbed, one in the historic Glenwood neighborhood, and one which was damaged during the tornado that touched down in East Greensboro. We have also constructed two new homes, one on Douglas Street and the other on Eastwood Avenue. Through these initiatives, we have impacted 16 families and more than 40 individuals to date.
In addition to providing support in the construction of new homes and much needed home repairs, Greensboro Builders Association members serve in various leadership roles on these organization’s Board of Directors and building committees.
Hurricane Helene Rebuilding
Greensboro Builders Association members have been involved in relief and rebuilding initiatives since the hurricane devastated western North Carolina...from donating supplies to assisting with clean-up and now rebuilding.
We recognize this is going to be a lengthy process for communities to rebuild. Our commitment is to assist those with the greatest needs providing rebuilding support.
RTOUR OF REMODELED HOMES
October 4-5
esidential remodeling offers numerous benefits to homeowners who want to change their living environment without uprooting their family and moving. Home renovations can add additional space for a growing family or older parent, improve energy efficiency, and increase the value of the home.
The most critical decision homeowners will make when embarking on a remodeling project is choosing the right professional for the job. Renovating your home doesn’t have to be a hassle if you plan your project well. Working with a qualified professional and team of experts has many benefits.
Home remodeling inherently involves overcoming challenges, such as maximizing existing space, strategically constructing additions, and navigating budgetary constraints. Professional remodelers can assist homeowners in effectively managing these issues and achieving their desired outcomes while adhering to their budget.
Members of the Greensboro Remodelers Council are committed to the industry, to quality construction and integrity, and most importantly, committed to their customers with the ultimate goal of helping homeowners create the home of their dreams.
We encourage you to utilize our annual TOUR of Remodeled Homes, both with in-person visits and virtual tours, to see the latest in residential design trends and quality craftsmanship. Visiting open houses provides an opportunity to meet the remodeling team and discuss your renovation needs.
Please note that the TOUR of Remodeled Homes open houses will be during the first weekend only…Saturday & Sunday, October 4-5 from 1-5 pm…admission is free.
