LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Chamber Friend, It is a pleasure to be a part of an organization dedicated to its mission, to promote prosperity and growth in Rome and Floyd County for and through its business memberships. During the course of the year we will highlight this mission along with focusing on education, community marketing and more. We are truly proud of the continuous improvements to this great community. This month, Momentum Magazine highlights River Dog Paddle Company, located at 5 Broad Street, and how owners Mike and Connie Sams molded a hobby into Rome’s first and only paddle board business. This issue also features stories on Damon Jones, the new President and General Manager at Brugg Cables, LLC; the kick off of the Chamber’s annual Membership Campaign and an update with photos on the E-SPLOST project: the new three-story Coosa High School. As the 2015 Chairman of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend an invitation for you to visit the Chamber of Commerce located at 1 Riverside Parkway and meet the Chamber staff. What’s that project?

The New Coosa High School

Brick is being placed on the west side of the new Coosa High School while workers erect the walls of the east portion of the building.

Construction of the new Coosa High School on Alabama Highway is ahead of schedule and under budget, according to RA-LIN & Associates officials. “We’re running about three months ahead of schedule and we’re running under budget, as far as the job is concerned,” Jay Grubbs, Business Development Manager of RA-LIN, said during an update at the Chamber’s joint April Economic Development and Education & Workforce meeting. “It’s really a great thing for the community. It’s going to be a great place for kids to go, and they’re going to move in earlier it than planned.” Grubbs added that students might be in the building as early as January 2016. The $32 million project is being funded through the education local option sales tax voted on by Rome and Floyd County residents. Floyd County School Superintendent Dr. Jeff McDaniel said the 178,500-square-foot school will have capacity for 1,000 students, which is one-third higher than the expected enrollment of 750. Plans include for the school to house 53 classrooms, five stairways, an elevator and a mezzanine where teachers will eat. “Quality facilities are integral to the success of ‘Destination Graduation,’” said Dr. McDaniel. “We are pleased to hear that Coosa community will be able to enjoy this school much sooner than expected and that the 2015 class of Coosa High School will be first to graduate under the new roof.”

Newcomer Spotlight:

Keepin’ up with Mr. Jones Momentum Magazine recently sat down with Damon Jones, the new President and General Manager of Brugg Cables, LLC. What we learned is that it’s definitely not easy...

Keepin’ up with Damon Jones.

Momentum: Mr. Jones, welcome to Rome and

Floyd County! Where are you from originally? How did your experiences bring you to Rome?

Mr. Jones: I was born and raised in Spartanburg,

South Carolina. After high school, I attended Clemson University where I earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering. From Clemson I moved down to Columbia, South Carolina where I enrolled at The University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business and subsequently completed a Masters of International Business Studies. I spent the next 15 years serving the electrical utility industry while working in various capacities for Siemens AG in the US, Germany, and United Arab Emirates. I joined Brugg Cables, LLC, in October of last year. I first experienced Rome in early 2000. At the time, I was a Field Salesman for Siemens, and I called on Georgia Power’s Plant Hammond. I was introduced to Rome and some of the things Rome has to offer, most notably the easy access to the outdoors, fishing, hiking, and camping. May 2015 8

Momentum: Why the switch from Siemens?

What are your goals for Brugg Cables, LLC?

Mr. Jones: The decision to leave Siemens and join

Brugg was not an easy one, but ultimately for me, it came down to where I felt I could have the most positive impact. Brugg is a much smaller company, and each person has the ability to have a fundamental impact on the success of our business. I like this aspect of life at Brugg. Professionally speaking, I have always been driven to work in environments with positive energy, smart people and big challenges. Brugg offers all of that. I joined Brugg Cables, LLC to focus the company on sustainable growth. We recently wrote and adopted a company-wide restructuring program that we call “Evolution for Growth.” Through the “Evolution for Growth” program we will operationalize certain core company values like focused responsiveness, collaborative support, and superior quality to better serve our customers and achieve our goal of sustainable growth.

Momentum: Tell me a little bit about Brugg

Cables. What does the company design? Who uses your products?

Mr. Jones: With our production facility in Rome, we manufacture our complete line of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) cables. This type of cable is used to provide grounding for electrical transmission towers while also providing fiber optic communications channels. Brugg Cables full product pallet also includes low/medium/high voltage cable systems up to 500 kilovolts. We are now Switzerland’s leading cable producer. In North America, we offer cable system engineering, project management, installation and testing. We also offer an entire product range of specialty cables for the transmission of signals and power.

Momentum: What’s your favorite thing about your job? Describe a typical day in the office.

Rapid Fire Q&A What are your favorite movies? -- Schindler’s List and Raiders of the Lost Ark Do you have any hobbies? -- Foreign Travel, Fast Cars, Fishing, and Golf Who do you look up to? -- Jesus If you were an animal, what would you be? -- Tiger What are you listening to right now? -- The Band, Johnny Cash, Aerosmith, James Brown

Mr. Jones: There is a lot to love about Brugg, but

Welcome to Rome, Mr. Jones!

Mr. Jones: There are never enough hours in

if I were going to have to choose one thing it would be our culture. Brugg Cables, LLC, is the North American operating company for Brugg Cables AG, which was founded by Gottlieb Suhner in 1896. The corporate headquarters as well as our largest cable manufacturing factory are located in Brugg, Switzerland, in the Canton of Aargau. Brugg is a privately held Swiss company with a long-term focus on quality, integrity, and stewardship. In this role, I wear a lot of different hats. The relatively small size of our company means that we all have different hats. Some days I work exclusively on the commercial side of the business, while other days I find myself deep in our operations. I also support our sales efforts. This requires that I travel about one third of the time. The travel is limited to North America, which is manageable and allows me the opportunity to get out and meet face-to-face with our customers with an appropriate level of frequency. Momentum: Are there any downsides to your job? the day.

Mike Sams (right) helps a customer inside the shop while River watches.

Owners Mike and Connie Sams recently explained how their passion for the boards developed quickly after a beach trip, how a rescued pup ended up inspiring the name of their business and how Rome’s rivers are perfect for delving into paddleboarding.

Relaxin’ with the River Dogs A group of paddleboarders paddle up the Oostanaula River.

Outside River Dog Paddle Co., 5 Broad Street.

As we entered through the door of River Dog Paddle Co., a mid-size dog wearing a bandana around his neck jumps down from one of the sofas and moves across the floor. Passing by rows of paddleboards, coolers, oars and colorful displays of fitness and surf-style apparel, his mission is to greet people as they enter. His owner Mr. Sams moves from behind the counter with a huge smile to introduce the dog as “River,” mascot and face of the business. “We had been on an excursion the day we found him,” explained Mr. Sams as he moved over to the seating area inside the store. “We had just wrapped up and were driving by the Coosa River when we spotted him and stopped to scoop him up. We have three boxers at home and were originally going to help by fostering him, but we fell in love with him. We tried to think of a name, and everyone said, ‘Why don’t you just call

him River since that’s where you found him.’ So it stuck. We found him right around the same time that we were thinking about opening this place, so through some fate, everything seemed to fit together.” As we sit down with Mr. Sams and River for a few moments, Mike’s wife, Connie, joins us. Connie explained how it was only a few months before opening the shop in November 2014 that their passion for paddleboarding spiked. “We had gone to a friend’s wedding at the beach, and my friend asked me if I wanted to try paddleboarding,” said Mrs. Sams. “I thought why not, and we set out that day for this little local paddleboard hut, only to find it closed. We thought that was that, but as we headed down the beach we found another place. I remember that after a short lesson on the water, I was hooked. The bug just bit me.” Mrs. Sams said it was then she knew she wanted to get a board for herself, so she purchased a cheaper one online. “It wasn’t the perfect board for me though,” she said. “I really needed a longer board because I like to let the dogs with me on the river. I continued doing research on boards and just learned so much so quickly. That got me thinking about starting a shop in Rome that would allow people the chance to try out boards before they purchase them.” The Sams sought out a location for the shop and fell in love with 5 Broad Street. “It’s perfect,” said Mrs. Sams. “We’re within walking distance of the confluence of Rome’s rivers, which makes it easy to take boards out to try. It’s been great for lessons.” Currently, River Dog Paddle Co. is supplied with the industry’s best selection of YOLO, BOTE and PULSE boards to rent, demo or purchase, along with a variety of apparel, accessories and more. Drop by their store to see their selection and learn more.
