Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful Emma Wells may not be a native of Rome, but she has made Rome her home. Ms. Wells grew up in Ellijay, Georgia and when it came time for her to leave home and start her college career, she chose Berry College. At Berry, Ms. Wells studied biology with a minor in chemistry with aspirations of going to dental school. Plans would soon change after graduating in 2016, and Ms. Wells would be led on the path to ecology. After graduation, Ms. Wells left Rome for a job in Charleston, South Carolina. After her contract ended, she had to decide what was next. It was an easy decision when she discovered the Rome-Floyd E.C.O. Center in Rome, Georgia. Soon after reaching out to Ben Winkelman, Director of the Rome Floyd E.C.O. Center, she began interning. The internship was extended and before she knew it Ms. Wells was the new biologist and education coordinator. Ms. Wells worked students in the

“I love the challenge and continuing to grow.” Said Emma Wells. “At the same time, my love for Rome has grown and I wanted to do more to help the community that has embraced me.” This was when the Director position for Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful opened. It just felt like the natural next step for me.”

“I had worked with Mary Hardin Thornton (former Director of Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful) a lot in my capacity as biologist and education coordinator, and I really admired the work she had done. I felt like this would be a great move for me. We teach recycling and litter prevention at the E.C.O. Center, but we don’t get to work on it as much as I would like. That’s why this position is the perfect spot for me. “ Soon Emma Wells was the new Director of Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful, and she has hit the ground running. “Our mission at Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful is to achieve a cleaner and more beautiful community through the education and involvement of its citizens,” said Ms. Wells. “This is what we strive to do through cleanups, bee day, and more.” Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. “I feel like the primary goal I have in stepping into this position is to help people with their light bulb moments,” said Ms. Wells. “I want them to realize how litter affects the community, and why bees are important to our entire ecosystem. I want the people in our community to have pride in their town. I want them to think ‘I’m not going to put this coke bottle in the back of my truck, because it

could fly out and end up on the side of the road’. We have such a beautiful community and we need to protect it.” Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful has all of the tools necessary to connect people with opportunities to become more involved. The organization helps to set up cleaning days for businesses and groups, it offers litter kits to people who want to go out and help, and there are more ways to become involved at www.romefloyd.com. “I am excited to watch this program grow more and help community members learn about the importance of leaving Rome and Floyd County a beautiful place.” Said Emma Wells.

Kiwanis Club of Rome Kiwanis Club of Rome is a nonprofit organization in Rome and Floyd County that makes a tremendous impact on the community. John Pillsbury, President of Kiwanis Club of Rome, answers questions about the Club and how community members can become more involved. Q: What is the Kiwanis Club of Rome?
JP: The Rome Kiwanis Club is part of the Kiwanis International, The organization was started in 1915 in Detroit. Our club was the second club formed in Georgia in 1919. The Rome Club will be 100 years old in December 2019 serving the young people in Floyd County.
Q: How many members do you have in the Rome Club?
JP: 23 Active Members. 5 Advisory Members. We would like to have more members join us to help accomplish our goals of working with our youth.
Q: Kiwanis Club of Rome is very involved in education and youth project. Why is this important to the organization?
JP: Our International Kiwanis Motto is "improving the lives of children one community at a time". We believe that our youth are our future. The more we can do to help prepare them for life after school, the more success our communities and our countries will enjoy in the future. We are a club of varied ages with lots of different backgrounds and experiences. Sharing these experiences with young people in different settings is always helpful as students learn. One way our Club does this is by working with high school Key Clubs. Three ideas we use," LOVE IT, Together we can accomplish more than what you can do alone. SHARE IT. Don't be shy to share your success and ask others to help in service. LIVE IT Dream big and plan to do something each year to help our young people be successful."
Q: What are the clubs sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Rome? JP: Our Club sponsors five Key Clubs (https://www.keyclub.org/): Armuchee High, Coosa High, Model High, Pepperell High, and Rome High. We also have a Builders Club (https://www.buildersclub.org/Home.aspx) at Rome Middle. Our Coosa High School Key Club was newly chartered this spring. All of our sponsored Clubs do projects of their choice to help our community. This provides leadership training and lessons on how to work together to accomplish their goals.
Q: When and where do your meetings take place? JP: The Rome Kiwanis Club meets the First and Third Tuesday of each month (excluding Holidays) at Sam's (Schroeders) Restaurant on the Martha Berry Blvd. in Rome. We meet at 12 noon for a luncheon meeting and we finish at 1 pm so business members can return to work. Each meeting consists of a short business meeting, an outside speaker, and lunch.

Q: What are some big events that you have coming up in the future? JP: Peach Sale taking place at present. We are taking orders up until July 11th, All orders have to be prepaid. Delivery will be at the Rome Braves Stadium on July 19th from 8 AM to 1:30 PM. A box of 25 pounds costs $40. a 12 1/2 pound box costs $25, and a 6 1/4 pound box costs $15. All net proceeds from this project go toward Scholarships for students, this past May we gave out $9500 of scholarships. Contact any Kiwanis member or ones listed above to order peaches. Pecan Sale near the Holiday Season. Continuing assistance for Pepperell High School Freshman 101 Course, Alana Ellenburg - teacher, providing volunteers to assist with interviewing, picking a career, and learning how to network. Participating in October with Floyd County Committee on Youth, for the fifth year, on a project "Teen Maze" for Freshman Students. Jewelry is a family business for the Knight family. In November of 1982, Dan Knight opened Knight’s Jewelers in Riverbend Mall where the store was located for 19 years. The store eventually moved to Mount Berry Square Mall. After 12 successful years in the mall, Dan Knight and his son Vann decided it was time to find a location that offered more space. The family soon found a new location, 1601 Turner McCall Blvd, and this location allowed for them to expand their jewelry selection. The store has now tripled its size and is able to serve more people and show off more jewelry. While the store has a stunning collection, it’s not the only thing that keeps customers coming back, it’s the staff. “We have great people who work with us,” said Dan Knight. “They are all from around the community. Our employees have built great connections with our customers. It is one of the reasons we see many of our customers over and over again.” The staff of five grows during busy months with the addition of part-time staff. Knight’s Jewelers works hard to build the relationships they have with their customers and truly believe that the customer service, honesty, and affordability they offer is what has helped make them, for several years, Rome News-Tribune’s "Best of Rome" jewelry store. The staff at Knight’s Jewelers understands the investment being made when a customer comes in to buy a piece of jewelry, and they want to do whatever they can to make that time special for the customer. Knight's Jewelers Continued An important part of the Knight’s Jewelry business is repair. They pride themselves on being able to do almost any repair, in store and fast. “Offering in store repair is one way we compete with larger stores and online stores,” said Dan Knight. “When you buy a jewelry piece online, you don’t receive the same amount of customer service, including repair. This allows customers to not even have to leave town to have their piece of the jewelry fixed. Having a great jewelry repairer is like having a good mechanic. Once you find it you keep it, and we have one of the best. Wendell Carver is talented and can repair almost any piece of jewelry.”

Like many other small businesses, the jewelry business now has to compete with online stores. Dan and Vann Knight work hard to set themselves apart from any .com store. “In our freestanding store we are able to display a large amount of jewelry,” said Vann Knight. “ This gives us an edge over online stores. Customers can come in and look at and hold the jewelry. They get to see it in person before they purchase. The customer also speaks to a person and sees a face they trust when buying a piece from our store.” The large display of jewelry at Knight's Jewelry is also constantly changing as trends change. In the jewelry business, the staff at Knight’s see the constant changing of trends and educate themselves on what is the most popular and what is about to become popular. "Just in the past few years, we have seen the more traditional-style pieces making a resurgence.” Said Vann Knight. “We’ve also seen yellow gold becoming popular again. With these changes, we adjust our stock and help to find everyone the perfect fit.” Another hurdle Knight’s Jewelry has overcome in the past few years is Pinterest, the social media site that allows users to find inspiration for all parts of life. “Customers will come in and show us a picture on their phone from their significant other’s Pinterest Board,” said Vann Knight. “So we offer to make them the piece they want. We help them bring their vision to life. These are normally uniquely designed pieces and not your typically stocked items." Economic Development Briefing
The Rome Floyd Chamber recently began inviting Chamber Members to the Chamber, 1 Riverside Parkway, once a month for a Monthly Member Meeting. This meeting allows for Chamber Members to hear from the staff on what is new at the Chamber, sit down with individual staff members, and receive help related to business and their Chamber Membership. The meeting also allows members to network with each other and learn from other businesses in the community. The next Monthly Member Meeting will be held August 8, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Rome Floyd Chamber.
