Southeastern Mills' New Culinary Innovation Center

Southeastern Mills team and the community gather to celebrate the grand opening of the new Culinary Innovation Center in downtown Rome.

Southeastern Mills has been an integral part of the Rome and Floyd County community since 1941. The fourth-generation, family-owned food company is headquartered in Rome, Georgia, and the mill has been a staple in downtown. The location on Old Lindale Road continues to thrive. The company famously known for producing biscuits and gravy has expanded many times over the last few decades. The company is now home to Better Than Bouillon, Shore Lunch, Louisiana Brand Hot Sauce, and Better Than Gravy, and those are just some of the items that consumers can find on store shelves. A larger part of their work are creations that most people might not realize but taste daily. They have helped to create some of your favorite foods at your favorite restaurants. The company works with clients to create custom solutions to make delicious recipes. They work to develop and manufacture ingredient systems used to deliver function and superior flavor. To make these delicious recipes a reality, the Southeastern Mills team works out of a research and development kitchen, Southeastern Mills' Culinary Innovation Center. The company that set the standard for how to have a successful business with their High Performance Work Place now is setting the standard with their new Culinary Innovation Center on 6th East 3rd Street. “We wanted to create a space that builds collaboration with our customers,” said Jennifer Moore, Director of Research and Development for Southeastern Mills. “We’re excited to work through solutions ‘on the bench’ on how products can be brought to life, whether it’s an industrial product, a new menu item for a restaurant chain or a product for a consumer to use at home.”

The new Culinary Innovation Center in Downtown Rome is a state-of-the-art center that combines laboratory, culinary, sensory pilot and ideation areas in the 5,500 square foot space. The space includes a commercial kitchen with a homey feel that features an 18-foot bar that can seat ten people as a chef cooks for customers to help them understand the food they are being served. The center also has a dedicated space for sensory work with its own air handling system and independent lighting that allows the researchers to receive unbiased opinions on food. The space also holds a research kitchen, a conference room, a dedicated flexible space, and a research lab with state-of-the-art analytical equipment. Southeastern Mills conducts business all around the world, but when it came to constructing their new Culinary Innovation Center they stayed true to their roots and used local businesses. The company used local talents like Carver and Carver for Plumbing, Fox Systems for the electrical, HiTech Signs for the signage, Farrell’s Frame and Design for the framing of artwork around the innovation center, and more. Also, the new center’s conference room features a one-of-a-kind, handmade 10-foot conference table built by one of Southeastern Mills’ employees, James Bryant. “Our entire team felt it was important to use local talent to make our dream a reality,” said Ms. Moore. “We wanted to have our customers walk in and feel like they are at someone’s home, at the same time seeing the history of Southeastern Mills. Having people from our community, our neighbors, have a hand in building this and helping our company grow is one of the reasons we are lucky to have Southeastern Mills headquartered in Rome and Floyd County.” 5 | Momentum

Studio M Grows in the First Year of Business

Ms. Marla Underwood has had a passion for cosmetology her entire adult life. With over two decades of experience as a hairstylist, she has made a name for herself in the world of cosmetology, and after years of working in other business owner’s salons, Ms. Marla Underwood opened her salon. “It was honestly not my intention to open a salon,” said Marla Underwood, owner of Studio M. “I went to visit a friend who owned her salon, and before I knew it I was being toured around a vacant salon nearby. The next thing I knew I was beginning the adventure of opening my own salon.” The salon has now been open for over a year and Marla Underwood has expanded her studio to include stylists Geri Gibson, Shona Mosteller and Regina Rainwater who together have almost 60 years of experience. This is just one of the qualities that help Studio M stand out among other salons. “We are all very experienced hairstylists,” said Ms. Marla Underwood. “Having this much experience means a lot to our clients. They come here because they trust us. We build a relationship with our client. The latest trends consist of different hair colors and creative hair cuts, both are such unique styles, and we are unique in the sense of how we train and work hard to execute amazing styles with the most unique hairstyles.”

It’s not just trustworthiness that has helped make Studio M a success since it opened. The location on 13 N Hanks St, the brick building behind Red Lobster, along with convenient parking and a truly relaxing environment make Studio M a success. Additionally, the staff is always learning. The entire staff at Studio M believes that the hair industry is forever changing and no matter how long a stylist has been in the business, you can never stop learning from others. Not only do they believe in educating themselves, but also educating their clients. The stylists at Studio M work hard to help their clients understand their hair and how to take care of it out of the salon. They want their clients to be happy with their hair every day not just the days they walk out of the salon. Even with great success, Marla Underwood isn’t slowing down. “We have so many plans for the future of Studio M,” said Ms. Marla Underwood. “We always want to grow our client base, and we are always accepting new clients. It’s important to continue to stand out by continuing our education. Everyone needs a hairstylist and we want to be the one you come to.” Ms. Marla Underwood’s vision of the future of her salon is to add more stylists to serve clients. There are also plans to add a manicure/pedicure station, an esthetician, and eventually add a front desk receptionist to help with scheduling appointments. She also plans to help inspire future cosmetologists with her new position on the Board of Directors for the School of Cosmetology at the College and Career Academy at Rome High School. “We can’t wait to grow more and help even more customers feel better and grow their self-confidence with a new haircut,” said Ms. Marla Underwood.

Jeanne Krueger Named President/CEO of the Rome Floyd Chamber Along with her seven months in the Interim Director role, her resume includes 25 years of Chamber experience, most of which were with the Metro Atlanta Chamber. Krueger served as the Membership Director at the Rome Floyd Chamber for the three years prior to her latest appointment and during that time membership ballooned to the over 900 members that make up the Chamber today. “Her experience and relationships make her the perfect hire for this position,” says Abercrombie. “The Chamber and our community can look forward to what will be accomplished under her direction.”

The Rome Floyd Chamber Board of Directors recently unanimously voted to hire Jeanne Krueger as President/ CEO, effective immediately. Krueger has spent the past seven months serving as Interim Director, providing continuity and leadership for both members and staff, while working diligently with the community at large to broaden the Chamber’s role in the future success of Rome and Floyd County. “The Board of Directors is extremely excited to have Jeanne take the permanent role as the leader of the Rome Floyd Chamber,” says 2019 Board Chair Elaine Abercrombie. “Her effort and willingness to work with others to mold the vision of our Chamber moving forward speaks volumes about the person we are now proud to call President/CEO. The initiatives and ideas she will be bringing to the table paint a bright future for not only our Chamber, but the community as a whole.” Krueger is no stranger to Rome. She is a graduate of West Rome High School and Shorter College, and resides with her husband of 32 years, Mark. Her daughter Shelby is a Spanish teacher at Rome Middle School and her son Anderson recently graduated with a degree in Exercise Science from Kennesaw State University.

Young Professionals gather in the Rome Floyd Chamber's Boardroom to hear from speakers at the Young Professionals...Let's Do Lunch Event.

Young Professionals of Rome gathered for a Let's Do Lunch event at the Rome Floyd Chamber. Over 30 young professionals from Chamber member businesses met for lunch at the Rome Floyd Chamber to network and to hear from July's featured speakers. At the July meeting, JJ Johnson, Smoothie King, talked about his move to Rome from Houston, Texas and how he went from military/law enforcement to owning his own Smoothie King franchise. The second featured speaker, Braden Keith, Romega Digital, talked about finding his passion early in life and immersing himself directly into the workforce and his evolution of Romega Digital. Ellie Borromeo, V3, spoke about her education at Berry College and how she and her family considered leaving Rome but decided to stay and have flourished in the community. The final speaker was Alli Mitchell, United Way. Alli spoke of her passion for nonprofit work and how she left Rome to move to Asheville, North Carolina but found herself being drawn back to Rome. The group was given the opportunity to ask questions of the speakers and learn more about other young professionals in their community. The next Young Professionals of Rome event is Dress for Success. This event will feature guest speakers from the retail industry in Rome. The speakers will talk about the changing industry of fashion and how to dress for success in your professional life.
