Georgia Pacific's Rome Lumber Facility Investing $30 Million To Improve Efficiency And Enhance Product Quality

In March of 2019, Georgia Pacific announced a commitment to the future of the Rome Lumber facility with a $30 million investment. The dimensional lumber facility, which currently employs 163 people, will use the investment to purchase and install new equipment in the coming months. This new equipment includes a new planer, grader and trimmer. Along with a new sorter that will serve 65 bays, a significant increase from the current 26 bays. What does this increase mean to the facility? Well, bays are where the lumber “lands” after it’s sorted and with this increase, there is less backlog which results in better product value. “A capital investment such as this means Georgia-Pacific believes in this site and is committed to it for the long haul,” said Plant Manager Ken McDonald. “Our employees, our customers, and the community will benefit from these improvements.”

The company says preparations for new structures and equipment is beginning now, with concrete work to be underway by June. Equipment installation will begin the following month and is anticipated to be completed by Thanksgiving. The facility will then shut down briefly to initiate and test the new equipment with plans to reopen in early December. This is the largest investment since GP acquired the facility in 2013 as part of the purchase of International Paper’s Temple-Inland Building Products division. "This $30 million reinvestment is great news for Georgia Pacific and our community," said Ken Wright, Director of Business & Industry Services. "Georgia Pacific continues to provide positive growth related to economic development in our community, through high-paying jobs and substantial capital investment."

Opportunity Awaits in an Opportunity Zone Q: What is an Opportunity Zone? An Opportunity Zone is a tract of land set aside in an area that businesses/investors may be eligible for preferential tax treatment. There are both state and federal Opportunity Zones. Currently, in Georgia, there are 260 census tracts that are designated as Federal Qualified Opportunity Zones. Q: When and who created Opportunity Zones? Opportunity Zones were added to the tax code by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on December 22, 2017. The first set of Opportunity Zones were designated on April 9, 2018.

Q: What is the purpose of Opportunity Zones? Opportunity Zones are designed to spur job growth and development. Tax benefits are available to incentivize businesses to buy land to build and/or expand and incentivizing companies to locate in the designated areas. The Rome Floyd Chamber delegation arrived in Washington D.C. on March 6, 2019 for two full days of scheduled meetings during the annual Issues and Opportunities Trip. The Rome and Floyd County issues were discussed at scheduled meetings, as the group advocated for our community, which included Senator Johnny Isakson, Congressman Tom Graves, the Appalachian Regional Commission, United States Trade Representative, Department of Education, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Authority, and Federal Aviation Authority. Issues discussed were 411 connection, city transit, airport runway extension, property use, and trade tariffs. "All of Rome and Floyd County were well represented during this year's Issues and Opportunities Trip," said 2019 Chair of the Rome Floyd Chamber Elaine Abercrombie, Greene's Jewelers. "It was a fastpaced, rigorous time for making our needs and challenges known at the federal level and to our Senator and Congressman."

Floyd County College and Career Academy Preparing the Future Workforce The Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy (CCA), was established in 1970 as the Floyd County Technical High School. After conversion to a College and Career Academy in 2008, the program began to increase student enrollment and student success. The Welding and Sheet Metal program began to see tremendous growth. Currently, the welding pathway is designed to provide students with basic knowledge and safe operating skills needed to demonstrate proper use of equipment in oxyfuel, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), and gas metal arc welding (GMAW). The students learn to perform oxyfuel cuts using acetylene and propane gases. Students also select electrodes and perform welds using SMAW and GMAW to current industry standards. Students learn sheet metal fabrication, plasma cam operation, and blueprint analysis. Also, students learn design and build technology and how to utilize computer-controlled machining (CNC).

The United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a six percent job growth for 2016 to 2026, this is the average job growth rate, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics points out the nation's aging infrastructure will require the expertise of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers to help rebuild bridges, highways, and buildings. Also, the construction of new power generation facilities and, specifically, pipelines transporting natural gas and oil may result in new jobs. “The median age for welders is currently 39.4,” said Eric Waters, CEO of Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy. “We see a majority of welders in the 35 to 54 age range, and these workers will soon be retiring, and it’s important that we educate our students and prepare them to take the place of those retiring.” The welding pathway and its students are affiliated nationally with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). The program is currently becoming Industry Certified. National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) representatives have recently stated that the Floyd County CCA Welding/Sheet Metal Pathway Lab is the prototype for the State of Georgia. Welding students are very active in Skills USA activities and other competitions. In November of 2018, several FCS CCA students won the Skills USA Challenge in Gainesville, Georgia. In February of 2019, three Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy Students participated in the 2019 Tulsa Welding School’s Annual National Welding Competition in Jacksonville, Florida. Ethan Hoover, Dakota Roper, and Terry Williams competed against 317 contestants from across the nation. Ethan Hoover placed 3rd and Dakota Roper placed 4th. Ethan and Dakota each won $900 worth of welding accessories. Also, Ethan won a $4,000 scholarship to attend Tulsa Welding School and Terry won a $500 scholarship.

“Our welding instructor had fully prepared us for any challenge,” said Ethan Hoover, Floyd County College and Career Academy Student about their recent win at the Tulsa Welding Competition. “Additionally, having competed earlier in the year at Skills USA helped us feel more prepared and comfortable.” The metals pathway has placed multiple seniors into internships at local businesses and industry. After high school graduation students are easily transitioned to Georgia Northwestern Technical College where students can earn a Welding and Joining Technology Diploma. The Floyd County Schools CCA Welding/Metals Program will continue to remain focused on aligning our pathway with the needs of local industry to enhance and grow local economic development.
