Entrepreneurs of Berry College
Berry College has a long history of students working on campus to help pay for their education. This rich history with students working in the business environment has led to the creation of Berry Enterprises and the robust Entrepreneurial Program in the Campbell School of Business. "We want to help foster our students' creativity," said Dr. Joyce Heames, Dean of the Campbell School of Business. " So many of our students are interested in starting a business, and this allows them the chance to learn. Many of our Entrepreneurial Program students who have begun a business while in school will continue with that business after they graduate."

Entrepreneurial Program students in class ENT 340 are given $100 dollars to start any business they want. Students are required at the end of the semester to pay back the $100 dollars. Out of this class assignment, students have created companies selling t-shirts, drink coasters, stadium seats, calendars and more. The students are offered an incubator space in Green Hall to have an area to work and share ideas with other students. The incubator space has been so successful the school of business is already working to create more space for the students. "Our students have to work through everything that a real business experiences," said Dr. Heames. "They have to buy supplies, figure out production and costs, and sometimes handle the legal side, if they are using the Berry logo.”

Students not currently taking ENT 340 can also be a part of a business by working in Berry Enterprises. These are StudentOperated Enterprises that involve the development and ongoing operation of campus enterprises by student teams with a staff or faculty co-manager. There are currently sixteen Berry Enterprises up and running with room for more. Students can work on Berry Farms, with Viking Furniture, Viking Cycle Works and more. "The businesses the students run not only help Berry College, but they help the students," said Dr. Heames. " We want to make sure our students are career ready when they leave here. It's important for them to know how to work with others and solve problems in business." With the great success of the Berry Enterprises and the Entrepreneurial Program, the Campbell School of Business is working hard on their next endeavor.

"Dr. Paula Englis has been the heart of the Entrepreneurial Program for the past fifteen years," Dr. Heames. "We are excited to see what she will do with our new Pitch Competition." The 2019 Pitch Competition is for Berry College students to present their business plans in front of judges, very much like a Shark Tank Style event. The final round will be open for the public to come and watch and will be held on February 8th at Krannert Ballroom beginning at 6:30 p.m. Awards will include $10k Ford Foundation Award, $7.5k Chairman’s Challenge Award, $5k Bettyann O’Neill Innovation Award, $2.5k seed funding, $1k seed funding and $1k audience award. "This competition is a great experience for students," said Dr. Paula Englis, Professor of Management. " The students are given a chance to win money to help grow their business, and they also acquire the quick pitch skill. It's important to be able to share your ideas in four minutes. It's a great life and business skill for them to learn. We are excited about the future of the Pitch Competition." 5 | Momentum

In January, the Rome Floyd Chamber hosted its 108th Annual Meeting at the Georgia Northwestern Technical College Aviation Training Center. The event was attended by hundreds of Chamber Members. The program included the naming of the 2019 Small Business of the Year, Midian Roofing, 2018 Ambassador of the Year, Quinton Schwengel, the Passing of the Gavel, and the honoring of retiring President and CEO, Al Hodge.

Quinton Schwengel, Keller Williams Realty, is the 2018 recipient of the Rome Floyd Chamber's Ambassador of the Year. The Ambassador of the Year Award is presented every year at the Annual Meeting. The award is given to the Ambassador with the most accumulated points throughout the year. Points can be earned by selling memberships, mentoring members, and attending Chamber events. “To be named ambassador of the year is a great honor,” said Quinton Schwengel. “A former colleague of mine stated it best when he saw I had been awarded the honor. He wrote, 'It’s very cool to see someone you know being recognized for serving in their gifting and passion.’ My thoughts are that when you’re passionate about serving others, the recognition you may or may not receive is just a side benefit of what you’re already doing. Mr. Schwengel and his wife brought their family to Rome in 1992 to finish his college education at Berry College. In 1996, Mr. Schwengel graduated from Berry College with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Business Administration.

Post graduation, he has owned two businesses and worked with two non-profit organizations. While working in the non-profit world, Mr. Schwengel desired to get back into the world of small business and set a new goal of obtaining his Real Estate License. His dream was brought to life in 2015 when he received his licenses and began his career in Real Estate.

Every year Chamber Member businesses are nominated for the Rome Floyd Chamber's Small Business of the Year Award. Midian Roofing received this prestigious award during the 108th Annual Meeting. Midian Roofing has given back to the community in so many ways since its conception in 2000. The company donates a portion of their profits to local charities, they have added an in-house apprenticeship program, and they are currently helping to support LivingProof Recovery as the organization establishes a new women's ministry. T.K. Hamilton started in the roofing business in 1988, and in the winter of 2000 Mr. Hamilton opened Midian Roofing. The company began in Pine Valley Trailer Park and by 2004, Midian Roofing had found its current home on the Alabama Highway. Midian Roofing now has two locations with thirty employees and a fleet of fifteen trucks. Growth for Midian Roofing has been tremendous, and there are now plans to open a third and fourth location.

Davis and Auburn Brasher spoke with the group about what the Boys and Girls Club does for the youth of Rome and Floyd County. Mr. Davis and Mrs. Brasher took groups around the South Rome Club for tours of the youth center, teen center and gymnasium. North Rome Church of God Celebrates Their Centennial 100 Years of Serving the Community In the fall of 1918, a tent was erected on the corner of Calhoun Avenue and North Avenue and community members gathered to worship. After some time of worshiping under the tent, a church was officially organized in March of 1919. North Rome Church of God was the first Pentecostal church in Rome.

As the years passed and the congregation grew the church relocated to North Broad Street where the church can be found today. Pastor Terry Addis has been the Lead Pastor at North Rome Church of God for the past five years and has worked hard to help grow the church. This has included bringing on Pastor Ahmad Hall, Pastor JV Pender and Pastor Chandler Sims. With a membership of over 1,300 culturally diverse members, North Rome Church of God has served its members and the community. "Our Members and our Church Staff work hard every year to help provide Thanksgiving meals and Christmas gifts to those in need in the community," said Pastor Terry Addis. "We are so honored to be a part of this community." The large congregation helps put on the church's annual Passion Play and Message in the Music Conference. The two events help bring people to Rome. Yet, the large congregation is like a family and there are small groups, children groups, Sunday School and more. "At North Rome Church of God there is no reason to say there isn't a place for me," said Ahmad Hall, Minister of Music. "There is a home for everyone here."

The church congregation enjoyed celebrating 100 years and is currently working on a documentary to share with everyone. Yet, this isn't where North Rome Church of God ends. "We have been a church for 100 years, during that time we have been a part of the community, " said Pastor Terry Addis. "We look forward to the future and what is to come for the community and the church."
