FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, January 6, 2019

CONTACT: Rocky Hill School Amadeus Finlay, Communications and Media Editor 401.884.9070 afinlay@rockyhill.org @rockyhillschool Rocky Hill Country Day Sophomores Write the Personal Stories of Immigrants and Refugees to Discover the Power and Responsibility of Sharing Someone Else’s Journey Sharing Voices, a project-based-learning module focusing on the duality of identity in the United States, challenged students to gain a deeper appreciation of the immigrant and refugee experience in contemporary America. The project is neither about immigration nor politics but focuses on what Sophomore students discovered about themselves and others as the result of discussions on personal experience. Speaking directly with the local immigrant and refugee population, the students learned about deep personal pain, abject violence, and suffering, yet also unwavering courage, resilience, and perseverance. The interactions celebrated the power of the human spirit and the kindness of strangers, but most significantly, the students learned about determination and never giving up. Along the way, the students were reminded of all the ways that we are different, yet also what we have in common. As they reflected on their identities, they discovered what it means to negotiate one’s identity and claim one’s new sense of place. While the experiences of the interviewees varied greatly, a single thread came to the surface; one of service and a desire to give back to the society that welcomed them. Many are involved in social community endeavors, including Clement Shabani and Aline Binyungu, Co-Founders of the Women’s Refugee Center in Providence; Teny Gross, founder of the Institute of Nonviolence for Providence (and current Executive Director of the Institute for Nonviolence, Chicago); Rodrigo
