PRESIDENT

ANDY BELLINSON

It took a lot of convincing to get my wife to move to Miami Shores in 2003, but we both agree it was the best decision we ever made. Having moved around a lot as a child, it meant a lot to me to find an area to live that was more than a home, but a community. That is what we found in Miami Shores. In developing my business, South Beach Smoothies, I opened stores throughout Miami-Dade, but in all my years of operating the business, I had yet to find an area as special as Miami Shores.

After returning to the practice of law, I have focused my practice, Bellinson Law Firm, entirely in the practice area of Elder Law. My sole focus is to help families acquire benefits for their elderly family members when they need long term care, while protecting their assets and preserving their dignity during very difficult times.

For over ten years, I have been a member of the Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce and been involved in many of their incredible events, programs, and community activities. For the past four years, I have had the honor of serving on their Board of Directors. The events that the Chamber of Commerce puts on have truly become a community staple. We know we can count on the current and future Miami Shores Village Council for their support so these events and activities can be enjoyed by the next generations of Miami Shores residents. After 20 years here, I believe that Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce will continue to provide a great service to this community for years to come and by supporting both the businesses and residents the best of Miami Shores has yet to come.

Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce

Awards of Excellence 2023

Honoring our Village’s Extraordinary Leaders

Every year, the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce honors outstanding members of the community whose accomplishments exemplify the values and mission of social work. Since 1968, The Citizen of the Year Award has been given to recognize an outstanding citizen who through their personal involvement, leadership abilities, and selfless giving of their time and talent over the previous 12 months, has positively affected the lives of our Village citizens, as well as becoming a great inspiration for others. This year, this distinguished award goes to South Florida People of Color’s Executive Director,

Roni Bennett

The Bennett family moved from San Francisco to sunny South Florida, ultimately making Miami Shores their home in 2004. The Shores offered the type family-oriented community where they wanted to raise their son. Roni Bennett quickly identified the lack of representation within the people of color in our community.

diverse voices are respected, and that empowered communities flourish. They have crafted extensive, focused programming that educates, encourages dialogue and advocacy, that fosters healing, equity and a path to inclusive leadership. Roni emphasizes, “Our goal is to make a positive impact on the lives of South Florida residents by bringing diverse communities together to empower individuals to unlearn deeply ingrained biases and to connect, collaborate and foster a more just and inclusive society.”

Knowing a thing or two about volunteer work, adversity, representation and the importance of community, our Village’s beloved Bob Bourne nominated Roni Bennett without hesitation. He explains, “I couldn’t think of an individual who does more to educate and encourage people to treat other people as human beings, no matter where they’re from or what they do, or what language they speak. Through education, Roni inspires people to act like decent human beings towards one another. She produces and provides an enormous amount of professional programming for very little recognition. She works very, very hard to make Miami and South Florida a better place to live for everybody.”

saw that our community was over 50% people of color, yet there was a significant lack of representation in local government and beyond.”

In 2015, she spearheaded and co-founded Miami Shores People of Color, now known as South Florida People of Color (SFPoC). With over 25 years of dedicated service in project and program management for complex technical and global initiatives, Roni was and remains an invaluable candidate to carry out SFPoC’s mission. She and her team set out to create an equitable South Florida. Their mission remains to ensure that

In 2016, the organization took a significant step forward, organizing, engaging and encouraging community dialogues. Their efforts proved to be fruitful and accomplishments include, their pivotal role in securing the election of the first black woman mayor in Miami Shores, Mayor Crystal Wagar. This event opened the door to SFPoC introducing a range of groundbreaking initiatives. Under Roni’s visionary leadership, they launched the “Awkward Dinner” series, which earned acclaim and recognition in the Philanthropy Miami Shark Tank competition in 2018. Their Unity360 Community Dialogues, another awardwinning endeavor, extended their outreach, bringing together diverse communities through open dialogues and cultural events. Roni explained, “The impact of our programs goes beyond education; we foster connections, bridge differences, and amplify voices to create a deeper understanding within our community. These connections, in turn, spark empathy and compassion, promoting a sense of unity that is essential for our community’s growth and well-being.”

When asked what she wished for our Miami Shores she shared, “I want to continue to build a Miami Shores that is known not just for its beauty, but for its commitment to education, equity, and unity.”

The Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Golf Tournament and an Annual Dinner honoring Roni Bennett and Alice Burch on Friday, October 6, 2023 at the Miami Shores Country Club. For more information, please visit miamishores.com

Alice Burch

The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to those individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to their community by ways of scholarship, administration, leadership, and/or mentoring. Those receiving this award have displayed integrity, drive and dedication to Miami Shores and our surrounding communities. This year, this illustrious award goes to our former mayor, Alice Burch.

If you are a local, you know that the last name ‘Burch’ is almost synonymous with this town. In great part for the passion and dedication Alice Burch has demonstrated from her arrival and for her accomplishments. Alice Burch grew up in Ithaca, New York. She and her husband George found their way to Miami Shores in 1973 to start their family. It did not take long for her to immerse herself in the neighborhood. She enrolled at Barry University to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. During her time there she would ride her bicycle, allowing her to really see the village. She admired every path she took.

Over time, she learned about the needs of our village and of the positions that needed to be filled to assist in its development. Public service was her calling in the midst of raising a family, and joining her husband in assisting and carrying on with the longstanding Burch veterinary practice (est. in 1948). She poured herself into every possible role available, and studied every position closely in order to make a difference. As a community activist, she served in leadership roles on several boards and organizations. One of her formative experiences as a young parent was as co-founder of a parent cooperative preschool. She is a founding member of the Community Learning Partnership of Greater Miami Shores. She served on the Library Board, spent ten years on the Doctors Charter School Board of Directors; and was twice Chair of the Miami Shores Community Alliance. Finally, in 2015, Alice Burch put her love of community and intimate knowledge of Miami Shores to work in a successful run for Miami Shores Village Council – serving two terms.

Chamber of Commerce and Miami Shores Presbyterian Church. Although this is a ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award, I’m certain she’s not done yet, and I will commit to always supporting her good ideas.”

When asked about her motivation and willingness to volunteer, she explained that she could not risk there not being a person ready and able to do the work. Burch explained, “There’s a dividend to giving your time to a cause. It does not pay, it has its trying moments, it’s not glamorous, but it must be done and it has always been fulfilling to me. One of the things I am most proud of is

Charter School.

Since its first graduating class in 2008, the school continues to deliver students to the college of their choice. It wasn’t easy to build it and start it. It’s

“I’m beyond blessed to call Alice my friend and mentor. Her love for the community, and commitment to education inspired me to become a volunteer. She has taught me that when you get involved and work hard, you make a difference for those around you. Her dedication, enthusiasm, vision, and leadership to various causes is remarkable. She is a true inspiration in the field of volunteerism.” -Melida

Long-time friend and resident, Susan Ackley shares, “I have admired Alice’s selfless dedication to our Village’s thriving community. Alice has been a role model and mentor to me and so many other new residents as we arrived in the Village. Her immersion and leadership within the community has always been exemplary, from Doctors Charter to Miami Shores Community Alliance, the Greater Miami Shores

living. I want to get safe pathways for folks. Where’s The Underline of North Dade? I want it to come sooner rather than later. It’s already a dream of some, the Flagler Trail.” It is her wish that our Village become more sustainable and resilient in the face of climate change, sea level rise, development pressure, and economic uncertainty. She adds, “I wish we would be our own best boosters by shopping local, preserving our homes, and building neighborhood unity. One event that really brings people out and together is Green Day, which supports all that I just mentioned. See you at Green Day!”

not easy to keep it, but it is worth it and I celebrate it.”

These days, Alice Burch serves as an advisor to many organizations, and assists her husband, now Mayor. But most of all she is focused on creating safer walking, biking and scooting spaces. She elaborates, “Drive less, live more” is a good mantra for healthy

Roni Bennett and Alice Burch are celebrated for their exemplary work in social activism, advocacy and community service. Their dedication knows no bounds. Both are wholeheartedly committed, dedicating countless hours over the years to our village – they have left a significant mark as pioneers. Please join us in celebrating their accomplishments.

Earthy Chic, a most welcomed addition

At last! The wait for a stylish Village clothing boutique is over. Our downtown “women’s row” continues to expand and flourish. Ladies, if your dream was to cut down on driving and shop ‘til you dropped close to home…say hello to Earthy Chic! That’s right, with this new addition we have officially become a little walking hub of cute boutique shops, beauty salons, sweet eats and drinks - to satisfy most of your splurging needs.

The Earthy Chic Boutique was dreamt up by Miami Shores resident, Priscilla Reyes. Born with a gift to style others, she has been successful at her craft for some time, setting up shop in Miami’s exclusive Design District in 2011 and later opening a pop up shop in Coral Gables’ Shops at Merrick Park. Over time, she has created a following that regard her as “The Stylist”. She has a knack for finding the right designers and carries effortless outfits, with a pop of the right patternsversatile pieces you can dress up or dress down.

Reyes was born in New York to Cuban immigrants and moved to Miami while in elementary school. She graduated from FIU’s international business program and then worked in advertising for Univision. Once she started her family, she wanted to strike a better work-life balance and have more control over her time. She’d always wished to run her own business, so after six years in the corporate arena, including a stint with the Tory Burch brand, she embarked on a venture that took her from pop up trunk shows to what is now Earthy Chic. Selling directly to consumers allowed her to really focus on what women wanted, eventually striking the perfect balance in inventory.

Earthy Chic appeals to women across the board – Reyes says her customer base is from 15 to 70-yearsold. Most retailers will tell you it’s almost impossible to fill this demographic, but Reyes makes it work. She comments, “I try to curate products that are timeless but trendy, bridging the age gaps and offering something for everyone that walks through the door. We have a bohemian feel and carry products from across the globe – handmade products at an attainable price point, but never compromising quality.”

Being obsessed with clothing myself, I can attest that you will love every Earthy Chic piece for its quality, unique look and value. Reyes adds, “Our focus is to highlight independent brands, mixed in with trendy designers, to really appeal to different age groups and styles. Our main focus is to bring a product that stays clear of the norm and really helps express our clients’ individual style.” Our dream comes true in the Shores! With her ready-to-wear boho luxe pieces, unique accessories and her guidance, trust me, we are in trouble. Pace yourselves.

Stroll our bustling downtown Miami Shores and be sure to visit Earthy Chic, located at 9705 NE 2nd Avenue, between Flight Wine and Pebble & Vine. Be sure to also follow on Instagram @earthychicboutique.

Selling your home can be stressful, but there are ways to make it smoother for both you and potential buyers. Here are some key tips to avoid common pitfalls and improve your chances of a successful sale:

1. Flexible Showing Times: Don't limit showing times; aim for maximum exposure, especially when you first list your propert y.

2. Respect Privacy: Leave the house during showings to give buyers the space they need to assess the propert y and discuss it freely.

3. Use For Sale Signs: Don't skip the For Sale sign; it informs neighbors and can attract local buyers through word of mouth.

4. Address Repairs: Deal with needed repairs before listing your home to prevent minor issues from becoming deal breakers during inspections.

5. Optimal Lighting and Climate: Keep your home well-lit and comfortable for showings, especially in areas with warm weather like Miami.

6. Deep Cleaning: Regular deep cleaning, including often-overlooked areas, is essential to present your home in the best possible light.

7. Consider Contract Terms:Instead of fixating on the highest price, weigh the terms of the offers. Cash vs. financing, appraisal contingencies, inspection periods, and post-occupancy arrangements can be crucial factors.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can increase your chances of selling your house quickly and at the best possible price. Streamlining the process for potential buyers will bring you closer to a successful sale.

A GoFundMe page has been set up if you would like to dinate to Frank’s Friends of Maui Pets: Gofund.me/43a297f5 We live in a vibrant and active community. From cultural gatherings and fundraisers like Frank’s Friends of Maui Pets, where local artists and photographers were invited to showcase their work. Money that was raised at the event will go to help pets that were lost, abandoned and injured during the recent Maui fires. Kennedy Kids Foundation held their Inaugural 5K run, which brought the community together to walk and run the streets of Miami Shores to support mental health awareness and suicide prevention among teens.

Fun, informative and exciting events are always happening around us, like the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce first annual Women in Business (WIB) Expo, where people gathered from all over to hear some amazing speakers, like Lorena Garcia, celebrity Chef and owner of Chica’s restaurant, Kathryn Rooney Vera, Chief Market Strategist at StoneX, Patrice Gillispie-Smith, COO of the Underline, and guests had the opportunity to shop at some of their favorite local vendors. It was a sold-out event and a huge success. Plans are already in the works for next year’s WIB Expo, so stay tuned.

For those who gathered at the Chamber’s Shores Young Professionals (known as SYP) “Endless Summer” beer tasting at Off Site Miami, thanks for joining us. It was a great evening of networking, hanging out with neighbors and meeting new friends…fun all around. If you were lucky enough to experience the sound meditation at Inhale and sit in on the Girl Boss breakfast with guest speaker Susan Howell, the Money Maestra, it was informative, relaxing and a lot of fun. Ending our September on a great note, some of the Miami Shores downtown merchants showed off their businesses with creative flare, while all those who supported them got to “Sip & Shop!” And the Pride Mixer at Flight Wine was a big hit and a ton of fun!

Recognizing and promoting the interests of our local business community, whether it relates to food, music, culture, art, or history is what we do. We encourage you to review the Chamber event information at MiamiShores.com for ucoming events and join in on the fun.

Understanding your relationship with money.

The way you relate to money affects every other relationship in your life. This is because money infuses every relationship. Whether you are struggling, making ends meet, living comfortably, wealthy, or anywhere in between, understanding your relationship with money is important.

If your relationship with money is not serving you it can be shifted, but first must come the awareness. Often, money is not discussed in families, among friends, in school, or in society at large. I say, enough of that – let’s talk about money, learn about money, and make it work for us in our lives.

First, look at your relationship with money. Really look at it, eyes wide open – no denial or avoidance. Sometimes, your relationship with money can be on autopilot. Yet, when you fly without a plan in money matters, usually you do not reach the destination you desire.
