A Legacy Rooted in

Miami Shores

The Yao family’s story in South Florida began when they moved from New York City to Miami in 1968. For the six brothers, the Village of Miami Shores quickly became a familiar and formative backdrop, even if they didn’t yet live there. They played sports at the community center, attended events at the old Shores Theater, and mingled with local kids at every opportunity.

“I remember the ‘fun club’ at the Shores Theater on Second Avenue,” recalls Dr. John Yao, the eldest of the three featured brothers. “It was pure chaos and pure fun, kids everywhere, movies, activities. That kind of thing sticks with you.”

Their Sundays were reserved for family mass at St. Rose of Lima, where they would occupy an entire pew. That sense of togetherness carried beyond the church pew and deep into their daily lives. As John puts it, “My best and closest friends are my brothers.”

John Yao: The Family Vet

John is the family’s veterinarian, “the animal doctor of the Yao family,” he says with a smile. “My mother was a nurse so she wanted one of her sons to become a doctor, not necessarily a veterinarian though.” Dr. Yao attended the St. Rose of Lima School, Archbishop Curley High School, the University of Miami and graduated from the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989, he completed an internship at Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston. In 2003, he opened Yao Animal Hospital, just minutes from his Miami Shores residence. Dr. Yao shares, “I love that my commute is barely ten minutes. My clients are my neighbors. I feel connected to every corner of this community.”

His wife, Lianne Kretzschmar Yao, is a proud “Florida cracker”, a rare Miami native who, like her father Ted, has called the Shores home since the 1970s. The Yaos couldn’t imagine raising their own children anywhere else.

John and Lianne raised three children in the Shores: Allison, Ella, and Johnny—all of whom attended school locally, from St. Rose of Lima to Doctors Charter School. Each child followed a distinct and inspiring path:

Allison graduated from Western Carolina University and now works as a middle school guidance counselor, commuting from her loft in Downtown Miami Shores.

·Ella graduated from Fordham University and is now studying for a doctorate in Eastern medicine

and acupuncture. She currently works at The Healing Elephant Acupuncture and Wellness Clinic with Dr. Corbin.

Johnny, after graduating from Miami Beach High, earned his undergraduate degree at University of Florida and completed law school at University of Miami. He now practices real estate law at Greenberg Traurig.

And of course, no story about Dr. Yao would be complete without mentioning the beloved furry members of the household. “All of our dogs are rescues in one way or another, there is Fluffy, Nala, Charlee, King Louie, and Hershey. Four golden doodles and a poodle.” John proudly shares. “Like Miss Peaches says, ‘Adopt, don’t shop!’”

Jayson Yao: Protecting

What Matters

For Jayson Yao, the Village became home in 1998. Now a 27-year resident, he recalls the deep satisfaction of coaching his kids, on the same fields where he once played as a young athlete.

“It’s a full-circle moment,” he says. “Standing on the sidelines, watching my kids run the same bases, shoot the same hoops, it’s a feeling that’s hard to describe.”

Jayson attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, and his children followed suit. For Jayson, Miami Shores has been a constant presence throughout his life, whether he was at school, participating in sports, or engaging in community activities. The allure of the neighborhood always resonated with him, and he knew that he wanted to return one day to create a similar enriching environment for his own family.

Jayson’s career path took him from banking to security. After serving as CFO at 50 State Security for nearly two decades, he launched 50 State Technology, a firm specializing in commercial fire alarms and residential security systems. It’s a business grounded in community safety and deeply rooted in local values.

Jayson emphasizes, “I stayed local because the Village is more than just a great place to live. It’s a place where relationships matter, where your clients are your friends, and where your kids grow up alongside your neighbors’ kids.”

Jeff Yao: From Non-Resident to Neighborhood Fixture

Known affectionately as “Yao4,” Jeff Yao has lived in the same Miami Shores home for the past 36 years. But it wasn’t always that way.

“We grew up just outside the Shores boundaries, always playing as non-residents,” he says. “But I told myself back then, someday I’ll live here. When I got married, that became a reality.”

Today, Jeff serves as the Construction Manager at Barry University, overseeing every renovation and building project on campus. His wife Vivienne works for the Village as a permit clerk, and just like them, their two daughters, Jennifer

and Jackie, attended St. Rose of Lima from preschool through middle school. Jeff shares, “Just like my brother, I got to coach them on the same fields we grew up on. That’s the kind of tradition that lives on here.”

A Family Rooted in the Village

The Yaos’ story is one of connection, tradition, and unwavering brotherhood. While each brother carved his own path, medicine, technology, construction—they all returned to the same compass point: Miami Shores.

Their story is not just about coming home. It’s about building lives within a community that once nurtured their dreams and now benefits from their dedication.

It’s about Sundays in church pews, nights on neighborhood fields, and morning commutes that feel more like homecomings.

A “meant to be”

story.

With over 40 years in the auto repair industry, his philosophy has always been simple: provide honest, high-quality service, and treat every customer like family.

Chuck mentions, “This shop is really an extension of who we are as a family. I work alongside my brother Mark and my son CJ, and we’ve built a team of technicians who share our values. We take care of every vehicle like it’s our own.”

What sets Miami Shores Auto Repair apart is not just its technical expertise, but the welcoming, trustworthy environment it provides. Customers know they can rely on a team that values transparency, stands behind its work, and genuinely cares.

Kate Baumwell: Capturing Life with Heart Through the Lens and Beyond

From the quiet suburbs of New Jersey to the vi brant energy of Miami, Kate Baumwell’s journey has always been guided by passion, purpose, and an eye for the moments that matter. A seasoned photographer, community leader, and animal advocate, Kate has spent her life connecting people to beauty, whether through family portraits, international landscapes, or the transformative mission of her nonprofit work.

Now a proud Miami Shores resident since 2008, Kate first discovered her love for photography by capturing family moments for friends and loved ones. What began as a creative outlet quickly evolved into a professional calling. Over time, she built a robust portfolio and gained the experience that now positions her as a go-to photographer for lifestyle shoots, family portraits, special events, and product photography.

Kate also brings a uniquely compassionate lens to her work, especially as an accredited special needs children’s photographer. With over 15 years in educational administration, she deeply understands how to create a safe, respectful, and engaging environment for all children, making her sessions meaningful and memorable for families with diverse needs.

Beyond the studio, Kate is a world traveler who has photographed more than 25 countries, using her camera not just to capture beauty, but to tell stories. From the cobbled streets of Europe to the bustling markets of Asia, each image reflects

her love of culture and curiosity. Her most striking travel photographs are available as prints in her online print shop, offering a perfect way to bring a piece of the world into your home.

But photography is just one part of Kate’s story. A proud Executive Board Member of the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce, a (quietly competitive) pool shark, and a passionate animal activist, Kate is also the founder of the Whiskers and Wine Foundation, a nonprofit organization with a heart as big as its mission. The foundation creatively merges two of Kate’s personal passions: animals and wine. Through engaging, wine-focused events, Whiskers and Wine raises funds for animal rescues, pet transportation, and provides support for pet owners in need.

“Our mission is to bring together wine enthusiasts and animal lovers to make a positive impact on the lives of animals in need,” Kate says. “It’s about compassion, community, and creating real change for rescue organizations and the pets they protect.”

Whether she’s behind the camera, advocating for animals, or serving her local community, Kate is a woman driven by empathy, creativity, and a commitment to making a difference. Her work, both artistic and philanthropic, reminds us that the most powerful images are the ones captured with heart.
