KALSOY
The island of Kalsoy is located in the northern part of the Faroe Islands. The west side of the island is made up of an impressive black basalt wall. The east side is green with verdant slopes. The island stretches approximately 18 km (11 miles) in length. Kalsoy Island has four villages: Syðradalur, Húsar, Mikladalur and Trøllanes. The villages are located on the eastern side of the island, protected by beautiful valleys from the steep cliffs on the western coast.
Kalsoy features 13 majestic mountain peaks, stretching along its narrow length from south to north. The island’s villages are interconnected by paved roads and four tunnels, and it is home to 11 picturesque valleys. Kalsoy offers tranquillity and ultimate relaxation amidst breathtaking surroundings.
To reach Kalsoy Island, you must cross the Kalsoyarfjørður fjord. The ferry to Kalsoy departs from Klaksvík, the second largest town in the Faroe Islands and arrives at the island’s southernmost village, Syðradalur.
There is a single ferry connection to the island: the ferry SAM, which operates several times a day between Klaksvík and Syðradalur.

Syðradalur
The village was originally located on the island’s western side and was known as Blankskáli. However, following an avalanche in the spring of 1809, the villagers decided to relocate between 1810 and 1816 to the eastern side of the ridge, where there was no risk of avalanches. At that time, Blankskáli consisted of four houses, home to 29 people. When the houses were moved, a fifth house was also constructed. The relocated houses retained their original names, while the new house was called ”har Uppi” (”Up there”).

Húsar
Húsar, the second village from the south on Kalsoy, is an ancient settlement, as evidenced by the old burial site north of the river Gjógvará. It is said that the first house in the village was hidden from the sea, by a hillock to the north protecting it from bandits. A village house is still named ”By the Hillock”. The current church, consecrated in 1920, is quite large compared to other village churches. At that time, the village was growing, with fishing becoming the primary industry after the Danish Royal Trade Monopoly was abolished.

Mikladalur
Mikladalur is an ancient village. The agrarian reform, Seyðabrævið from 1298, mentions Mikladalur in its stipulations on sheep and dogs. In his book, Færøske Kongsbønder, Anton Degn lists land tenants back to 1584. Parliamentary records also indicate that an assembly was held in the village church and churchyard in 1646, further evidencing its long history. Mikladalur is renowned for its skilled craftsmen, including blacksmiths, boat builders and stonemasons. Many artists also trace their roots back to Mikladalur.
The legend about the Seal Woman in Mikladalur is well-known throughout the Faroes, especially since a statue of the Seal Woman was erected in 2014 on a rocky knoll, Stórikneysi, at the village shore. The statue attracts many visitors, both Faroese and foreign tourists.

Trøllanes
The village of Trøllanes is first mentioned in a cadastre from 1584, which recorded two farms in the village. Since the two families who ran these farms do not appear to be related, it is likely that the village is even older. However, its exact age remains unknown.
Trøllanes is the most visited village on Kalsoy Island. It is accessed through four tunnels that pass through four different mountains on the island. Trøllanes, the northernmost village on Kalsoy, offers picturesque views that are often described as postcard-worthy.
