ATLANTIC FAIR 2024
INTERNATIONAL MARITIME EXHIBITION

Come and meet Accelleron during the Atlantic Fair in Hall B booth B-152.

WELCOME to Atlantic Fair 2024

Over the past two decades, the Faroe Islands have experienced significant growth. Since the beginning of this millennium, the population has increased from approximately 45,000 to over 54,000 residents. Remarkably, 90% of the population is now connected by a network of bridges and tunnels, paving the way for new opportunities.

In recent years, several modern fishing vessels have been added to the maritime fleet, and the island’s modern industry plays a central role in the global drive towards internationalization.

Fish farming has nearly tripled in tonnage since the year 2000 and now accounts for approximately half of the total fish export value.

The transition to renewable energy is progressing rapidly and now includes wind turbines and harnessing ocean currents, in addition to hydropower.

to WELCOME you once again to Klaksvík

The vibrant fisherieshub of the Faroe Islands

At the previous fair more than 4000 visitors from 20 countries visited Atlantic Fair in Klaksvík, the industrious fishing capital of the North Atlantic. As prime minister of the Faroes Islands, I am honored to welcome you once again.

Few nations in the world are as closely tied to the sea as the Faroes Islands. It goes without saying that the exploitation of our natural resources has been the foundation of the Faroese economy and welfare for generations. As country we strive to ensure that these resources are utilized in a sustainable way with responsible and effective fisheries.

Atlantic Fair is living proof that innovation and adaptability go hand in hand. I am confident that the fair will once again showcase the very best of maritime-related businesses in the North Atlantic region and worldwide.

Welcome to Klaksvík

The fishing industry has historically been the bedrock of Faroese society. Therefore, the country's financial state is, to a certain extent, a mirror of the state of the fish stock around the Faroe Islands.

As the fishery capital of the Faroe Islands, it is important to the local area that the fishing industry has secure and stable conditions to work with.

Consequently, the importance of sustainable fisheries is something that all in the industry occupy themselves with, even though there might be differences in opinions concerning best practices for working towards sustainability. However, the fishing industry in the Faroe Islands is recognized for continuing to develop new sustainable solutions, which can contribute to securing the industry in the future. An example is the new ships arriving in the Faroese fleet this year, which will be a significant contribution towards greater sustainability.

Welcome to KLAKSVÍK

Visit our stand at Atlantic Fair B-133 klaksvik.fo

Atlantic Fair is a platform supporting this agenda, an international trade show hosted in Klaksvík for networking for companies worldwide. During these three days, companies will strengthen their current business network, make new business partners, and get inspired to find complicated solutions in new innovative ways that cross borders. Such cooperation can be time-consuming and costly; however, it is a decisive part of progressing toward a sustainable future in the fishing industry.

New possibilities for travel between countries are more accessible than ever. I believe that it is essential for Faroese companies to have the possibility to showcase their products in their local environment and display the hospitality the Faroese people are known for. Therefore, Atlantic Fair provides an excellent opportunity for local businesses to strengthen their business relations in their local settings, strengthening the foundation for future cooperation.

As Mayor of Klaksvík, I am pleased that our town gets the honor to host the Atlantic Fair 2024, a business trade show with great value for the town. This event receives thousands of visitors, and I hope all trade show attendees will have a great experience and explore the town’s shopping and cultural opportunities.

On behalf of the city of Klaksvík, I want to welcome you to the Atlantic Fair 2024.

Kind regards Karl

CHRISTIAN Í GRÓTINUM: a pelagic fishing company

Jan Petersen, CEO of the Christian í Grótinum, speaks of the corporate group, its history, its current fleet and contemporary activities as well as about future plans which include a brand new four-star hotel in the town of Klaksvik.

– “Christian í Grótinum is one of the largest businesses in Klaksvik employing about 100 people. Our core assets are two pelagic vessels that fish the four prevalent pelagic fish herring, mackerel, capelin, and blue whiting, and the last years both the fish stocks of said fish kinds and the quotas have been relatively large, meaning a significant annual result and stabile activities”, says Petersen.

The vessel Norðborg is a production vessel with a fish and meal factory on board that also produces fishoil. Most part of the fish is frozen on bord and sold to various countries around the globe, whilst the waste is produced to fishmeal and fish oil.

The companies second vessel Christian í Grótinum, is a pelagic RSW trawler fishing and unloading to on land production, mainly to to plants at Fuglafjørður, where Christian í Grótinum is a 30%-shareholder of the pelagic plant Pelagos.

13
ˇ

The Christian í Grótinum corporate group began back in the winter of 1971-72 with different owners than today and with just one vessel, the Borðoyarnes, a long-liner destined for fishery at Flemish Cap. In 1975 the first Christian í Grótinum vessel was built at Skála Shipyard and stayed in the fleet until 1998, when a new vessel by the same name came from Chile.

In 2000 the group acquired the company Hvalnes and the vessel Norðborg. At the same time decision was made to go for on-board production, first with an older factory trawler from Norway and in 2009 the company got a new production vessel that was build at Asmar ship yeard in Chile. In 2013 we got a second production vessel that was replaced with a new RSW travler in 2022. The goal is to replace Norðborg in the near future, but the project is sat on hold due to higher prices than expected and expected lower quotas due to fishery agreements with costal states.

Christian í Grótinum Group is closely knit to the local community in Klaksvik, and is e.g. building a new and modern hotel in the town. The necessary capital has been invested, and the hotel is now being built. According to plans the hotel will have 4 stars, 83 rooms, and is to be

ready for use in December 2025. There will be a restaurant with seating for 80 people, a café and a a lobby. There will also be a large ballroom with room for approximately 300 people.

There is a healthy competition going on between the two largest towns on the Faroe Islands, Torshavn and Klaksvik, and the hotel will also be in competition with the numerous hotels in the capital. The tourism industry is booming at the moment, and CEO Jan Petersen sees the hotel as a good investment not only due to tourism but first and foremost for the thriving of the local community in Klaksvik.

Christian í Grótinum is also the owner of Amarant, the local bakery and lately the company also invested in Magn, Gist & Vist and since 2014 has been a 30% owner of Pelagos in Fuglafjørður.

THE FAROE ISLANDS

– unspoiled, unexplored, unbelievable

Remotely clustered in the North Atlantic Ocean, a rugged archipelago of eighteen mountainous islands erupt out of the ocean in imposing basalt cliffs. The Faroe Islands, sandwiched between Nordic neighbours Iceland and Norway, offer vast, untamed and spectacular landscapes that are immediately impressive and undeniably compelling.

Travellers are often made small by the grandiosity of the natural environment; the daunting sea cliffs, the unforgiving waves that ripple against the coastline, the lush green valleys surrounded by steep mountains. ˇ

Days are lived as nature intended: without strife, without fuss, and always subject to the weather. Left in relative solitude since the first settlers arrived in the fourth century, the Faroese today exhibit a vibrant culture distinctly their own.

Beyond fishing and shepherding, to be Faroese is to be creative and diverse. Gifted chefs cook world-class cuisine. Artisans create masterpieces with wool and fabric. Architects build. Artists paint, and musicians sing – with amber voices that crack in all the right places, against jazz and heavy-metal infused folk music that merges the past and present, and over the invasive drum beats of electropop and indie rock.

The Faroese, a population of nearly 50,000 people, are endearingly hospitable and gentle in their manner. Love for their homeland is deep and honest. They are quiet natured, peaceful, and exercise a strong sense of community. Hospitality is innate; their doors are always open.

The Faroe Islands, translated directly as “sheep islands”, is a self-governing nation under the external sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. Culture is the seat of Faroese pride, with its independent language, flag and traditions. ˇ

19 ATLANTIC FAIR 2024

In a generation, with the help of the prosperous fishing trade that accounts for approximately 20 percent of GDP, the Faroese have come into a cradle of affluence, seen to some degree in the widespread use of technology and well-established infrastructure that connects the 18 islands by roads, bridges and subsea tunnels, making it effortless to travel around the country. This, along with first class telecommunications and high-speed internet, provides a superb base for maintaining the economic, social and cultural sustainability of communities all around the country.

Although the islands exude the sense of a mysterious land far away, they can be reached by air in only two hours from continental Europe.

FAROE SHIP –environmentally responsible shipping

Bogi Petursson Nielsen (48, from Tórshavn) is the CEO of Faroe Ship. Nielsen’s academic background is not typical for the shipping business; he is an accountant and has briefly worked in the oil industry before joining Faroe Ship in 2007. The incumbent CEO of Atlantic Airways, Johanna á Bergi, was at that time running Faroe Ship. After a few years Nielsen advanced to financial manager, and when Mrs. á Bergi changed career in 2015, Nielsen first became interim CEO and full CEO later in 2015.

Faroe Ship deals with shipping and transportation by sea. Most of the shipping is done with large container ships, and to a lesser extent in reeferships that transport frozen goods. Apart from being a containerliner company, Faroe Ship operates warehouses, coldstores, container terminal, vessel agency and freight forwarding. Faroe Ship was formerly a local business by the name of Skipafelagið Føroyar, but has since 2004 been a part of the larger Eimskip conglomerate.

Faroe Ship is situated in Tvøroyri, in Tórshavn, and in Klaksvík. The head office is in Tórshavn, where the administration also is along with a container terminal, coldstore and warehouses, whilst running a coldstore and warehouse in Klaksvík and warehouse and trucking activities in Tvøroyri.

ˇ

Currently Faroe Ship employs 40 people as office staff, approximately 25 drivers; mainly truck drivers, and about 25 people working in the warehouses and terminal. The division of labour is about 40/60 in administration/operations respectively. In addition to these Faroe Ship also has temporary workforce that comes in to work odd hours, mainly for on- and offloading ships.

A majority of the importcargo comes from Denmark via the port of Aarhus, but Faroe Ship has a wide range of other ports. Export is more wide ranging with Faroe Ship ships sailing to and from as different countries as UK, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlandsted as well as to the United States and Canada. Furthermore the company is Maersk agent in the Faroe Islands when it comes to servicing ports outside of their own shipping links.

Today Faroe Ship is a financially stable business constantly seeking to improve itself digitally and professionally with the everlasting goal to become more efficient. The future is looking bright, and Mr. Nielsen mentions that there currently are signs of a lower financial interests as well as lower oil prices.

Apart from that, the costs of running transportation have, however, not lowered and show no signs of reduction in the foreseeable future either.

Among the company’s goals Faroe Ship strives to become ‘climate neutral’, as Nielsen puts it, by the year 2040. Nielsen admits this is perhaps overtly ambitious, but they need such goals to become more environmentally sustainable, but we need to be ambitous in order to reach the target – ‘When Faroe Ship purchases new devices and tools, we are very aware to buy environmentally friendly ones’, Nielsen says.

– ‘In the near future Faroe Ship will be relocating to new buildings and offices in Tórshavn Harbour that meet our every demand, giving new possibilities. So the future looks both bright and exciting’, Nielsen optimistically concludes the interview by saying.

”Market Access for Faroese products and services”

In the presentation, Niels Winther, Managing Director of the House of Industry, presents the results from a recent survey among Faroese exporters regarding market access.

The market access for faroese fish products is then compared with the market access that other countries have for their products. Finally, the need for further double taxation agreements with other countries is addressed in the presentation.”

In 2019 the Faroe Islands/Denmark concluded two outer continental shelf delimitation agreements with Iceland and Norway, respectively. These agreements relate to the area north of the Faroe Islands, beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured. In so doing the Faroe Islands asserted exclusive and sovereign rights to explore and exploit all resources in an additional area of 27.000 square kilometres, including also possible rare-earth minerals on the seabed.

Faroe Islands/Denmark have an additional outer continental shelf claim to regarding the Faroe-Rockall Plateau, which in 2010 was submitted to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. The claimed outer continental shelf entitlement to the Faroe Rockall Plateau was submitted to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in December 2010, the consideration of which is pending. Neighbouring countries have overlapping claims to the Faroe-Rockall Plateau.

The exercise of any sovereign powers within the Faroe-Rockall Plateau is contingent upon two factors. Firstly, the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf must consider the claim(s). Secondly, the relevant neigbouring States must seek to agree on delimitation agreements, failing which the dispute may be referred to relevant compulsory conciliation commission proceedings or, as appropriate, to the International Court of Justice or international courts and tribunals.

Seabed minerals on the Faroese Continental Shelf

Numerous geological surveys have been conducted on the Faroese continental shelf. These have mostly focussed either on hydrocarbon exploration related geology or the Faroe Islands’ claim to an extended continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles. In conjunction with many of these surveys, so-called seabed grab samples are taken, and some of these have returned samples of seabed minerals.

Seabed minerals are minerals that precipitate on the ocean floor, particularly where there is little sedimentation, where the seabed is hard, and where the slope is steep. Various types of seabed minerals exist, including iron-manganese crusts, iron-manganese nodules, and SMS (seafloor massive sulphides). What these minerals have in common is that they contain a range of critical metal resources (polymetallic), which are largely used in producing batteries and electric production tools that are part of the green transition, as well as being significant in high-tech manufacturing. These minerals are currently in high demand, and this has led the Norwegian authorities to permit exploration for these minerals on the Norwegian seafloor.

Samples from the Faroese seafloor have shown that both iron-manganese crusts and iron-manganese nodules are present, and surveys in deep waters have also indicated areas where conditions are favourable for finding particularly iron-manganese crusts, but possibly also SMS. Further investigations are needed to confirm the extent of these areas and the actual quantities of minerals present.

Bakkafossur, Smyril Line RoRo and future trawlers

The marine consultancy company Knud E. Hansen is well known in the Faroe Islands and has been designing vessels for the islands for many years.

In the 1940’s KEH designed multiple of the so called “30tons” and “80tons” Longliners in conjunction with the renewal of the Faroese fishing fleet post World War II.

1950’s KEH designed the trawlers: Leivur Øssurson, Ólavur Halgi, Vágbingur, Brandur Sigmundarson og Magnus Heinason.

1960’s a number of vessels were designed by KEH that were built in the shipyards in Tórshavn and Skála. Smyril and Norvíkingur were built at the yard in Tórshavn and Chr. Holm and Árnatindur were built at the yard in Skála.

Furthermore some well known designs from KEH are the ferries that have been operateing in between the islands throughout the days, (some are still active): The old Ritan, the current Ritan from 1971, Teistin (Mikkel Mols), the old Smyril (Morten Mols), the current Smyril from 2005 and the old and the current Norrøna.

Also the Faroese patrol vessel Brimil was designed by KEH.

Knud E. Hansen has an office in the Faroe Islands which have been designing the large well-boat Bakkafossur. Bakkafossur got a design reward for the “Best Work Boat-Project in 2023”.

Evolving Safety: Consciousness and Measures in Maritime Operations Lectures

Brandur í Funningsstovu, Sjónám

May 30th, 11.00PM

Language: Faroese

Explore the evolution of maritime safety through historical insights and the implementation of crucial standards. We’ll examine how major disasters have shaped and developed maritime safety measures through IMO conventions and protocols.

We will also discuss the inception of maritime courses in the Faroe Islands in the early ‘90s, now mandatory and fully embraced by the maritime industry. Concluding, we address the current challenge of fostering a safety culture onboard, particularly in fleet segments resistant to proactive responsibilities like regularly conducting drills.

This session provides essential insights for anyone involved in maritime operations, highlighting the importance of continuous improvement in safety training, thereby enhancing onboard safety culture.”
