WELCOME to Atlantic Fair 2022 This year's expo marks the 10th Atlantic Fair, where we welcome exhibitors and distinguished guests from far and near. Since its inception in 2001 - then under the name North Atlantic Fish Fair - Atlantic Fair has been a vital meeting point for the maritime industry in the North Atlantic, drawing exhibitors and guests from all corners of the world in increasing numbers year by year. This year there will be 191 companies, representing 17 countries, present in the two halls as well as in an outdoor exhibition. The biennial Atlantic Fair has established itself as a platform where companies from all over the world come to showcase their products and services and transact business. We have been pleased to observe the significant growth of the event over the years characterized by the enthusiastic participation of companies in the maritime industry, both from the Faroes and overseas, who have been attracted by the rich opportunities it provides. This is something that I as the Mayor of the host city and my fellow citizens take a great deal of pride in Here in Klaksvík, the fishing capital of the Faroe Islands, we have historically relied on our private sector to lead the way forward in providing economic growth and jobs. Consequently, to en sure the successful continuation of this process we consider it as being of the utmost importance to encourage diversity within our corporate industry. In recent years we have seen the vital role that Atlantic Fair plays as a catalyst in this regard. Our local companies have made full use of the event to establish new business connections as well as finding inspiration to work towards innovative and creative solutions in their work. The fishing industry is a challenging environ ment in which it is essential to have the requisite knowhow and skills to operate successfully. And a prime quality for leaders in the industry is to have to courage to make whatever adjustments are needed to adapt to changing conditions and stay competitive. It is therefore no small achievement for us as a small country far out in the Atlantic to have managed to stay at the forefront of the

fishing industry and maritime develop ment generally. Moreover, we see it as important, particularly in today’s world where environmental considerations are a pri ority, that the fishing industry works towards a sustainable future. As a small country whose economy is overwhelm ingly dependent on the bounty of the ocean this is clearly in our own selfinterest as well. We work with the vision of locally developed products emanating from our long standing traditions, but with an injection of innovation when appropriate, being produced for the benefit of the nation as a whole. With all this in mind we are once again pleased to welcome you all to Klakvík for Atlantic Fair 2022. As the ocean is deeply embedded in the city’s culture, we regard it as only natural that we should play host to a trade fair with this designation. Remotely clustered in the North Atlantic Ocean, a rugged archipelago of eighteen mountainous islands erupt out of the ocean in imposing basalt cliffs. The Faroe Islands, sandwiched between Nordic neighbours Iceland and Norway, offer vast, untamed and spectacular landscapes that are immediately impressive and undeniably com pelling. Travellers are often made small by the grandiosity of the natural environment; the daunting sea cliffs, the unforgiving waves that ripple against the coastline, the lush green valleys surrounded by steep mountains. Days are lived as nature intended: without strife, without fuss, and always subject to the weather. Left in relative solitude since the first settlers arrived in the fourth century, the Faroese today exhibit a vibrant culture distinctly their own. Beyond fishing and shepherding, to be Faroese is to be creative and diverse. Gifted chefs cook world-class cuisine. Artisans create masterpieces with wool and fabric. Architects build. Artists paint, and musicians sing – with amber voices that crack in all the right places, against jazz and heavymetal infused folk music that merges the past and

present, and over the invasive drum beats of electro-pop and indie rock. The Faroese, a population of nearly 50,000 people, are endearingly hospitable and gentle in their manner. Love for their homeland is deep and honest. They are quiet natured, peaceful, and exercise a strong sense of community. Hospitality is innate; their doors are always open. The Faroe Islands, translated directly as “sheep islands”, is a self-governing nation under the external sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. Culture is the seat of Faroese pride, with its independent language, flag and traditions. In a generation, with the help of the prosperous fishing trade that accounts for approximately 20 percent of GDP, the Faroese have come into a cradle of affluence, seen to some degree in the widespread use of technology and wellestablished infrastructure that connects the 18 islands by roads, bridges and subsea tunnels, making it effortless to travel around the country. This, along with first class telecommunications and highspeed internet, provides a superb base for maintaining the economic, social and cultural sustainability of communities all around the country. Although the islands exude the sense of a mysterious land far away, they can be reached by air in only two hours from continental Europe.

There is no need for anyone in the Faroes to fly off to far flung lands in Europe to obtain inspiration, knowledge and the benefit of experience of the development of renewable energy alongside inte grated hydrocarbon plans. All this can be found at our nearest neighbour, Shet land. It is there that a comprehensive, cutting edge and challenging energy plan has been mapped out that has great potential to serve as a source of inspiration to the Faroes. At the heart of this exciting Shetland initiative is the ORION project. ORION stands for Opportunity for Renewable Integration with Offshore Networks. The co-ordinator for the project is Gunther Newcombe who will be giving a presentation at Atlantic Fair which will provide industry stakeholders in the Faroes as well as the general public with an opportunity to hear first-hand about this hugely ambitious project. The aim is which is to transform Shetland into a

world class energy hub by utilising onshore and offshore wind as well as tidal and wave energy. In addition to publicising ORION, Gunther, who has been invited to the Faroes by FOÍB (Faroes Energy Industry Group), is hoping to use his visit to assess the potential for the Faroes to develop a similar energy hub and also at the possibilities for cooperation between the Faroes and Shetland in the energy field. The co-ordinator role with ORION (in a consultancy capacity) is a task Gunther took on after a long and distinguished career in the oil and gas industry. He spent 35 years with BP working in far flung locations like Indonesia, Venezuela and Azerbaijan as well as on assignments closer to home related to North Sea operations and at the Terminal at Sullom Voe in Shetland. The types of work he undertook during his BP career covered the whole range of specialities from exploration to decommissioning. On leaving BP, Gunther took up the post of Operations Director at the UK’s Oil & Gas Authority (OGA) with responsibility for supervision and regulation of the industry and for evaluation

In a press interview Gunther set out ORION’s ambition as being “to transform Shetland into a totally green economy with no emissions.” How ever, this is not intended to be at the expense of the oil and gas industry. Far from it in fact as one key aim of the project is to facilitate the electri fication of oil and gas installations including those that will be deployed on the big developments close to the Faroese border such as Cambo and Rosebank. This provision of clean energy is seen as an essential part of the process for the industry to carry out its obligations to transition to net zero emissions. ORION has also got the aim of producing green Hydrogen for export as well as affordable clean energy for domestic use in Shetland to replace the current dependence on fossil fuels. The Shetland economy is expected to further benefit by the creation of a significant number of new jobs.

In this post he was very supportive of cooperation between the UK and the Faroes which came to fruition with the co-ordination of Faroese and UK Licensing Rounds in 2019. As part of his programme Gunther will be meeting with Jarðfeingi as well as with Magnus Rasmussen, the Minister responsible for oil and gas, for discussions about future exploration. After approximately 5 years, Gunther stood down from his post at OGA in 2020. In recognition of his services to the Industry at the end of that year he was awarded the prestigious OBE (Order of the British Empire) in the Queen’s New Year Honours List. On a personal note, Gunther is a Welshman and retains the accent of his homeland though he has long been resident in Scotland, living in the Aberdeen area. He has a personal connection with Shetland through his wife, Michelle who hails from there will be joining him on this visit.

Faroese supply side firms heading for brighter future on both sides of the border

If the search for hydrocarbons in Faroese waters is resumed and a green light is given to the development of new oil and gas fields on the other side of the border then the Faroese supply industry can look forward to a brighter future writes Jan Müller, the Managing Director of FOÍB (Faroes Energy Industry Group). Fortunately, the era when there was a border dispute between the Faroes and the UK has now been consigned to history. With the treaty between the two countries, which was signed almost 25 years ago, a secure environment for investment and economic activity in the area between the Faroes and Shetland was achieved. Exploration for oil and gas has subsequently taken place on both sides of the border and with the creation of this market for their services an incentive was provided for Faroese firms to develop a supply side capacity. In particular, the nine wells that were drilled in the Faroese sector after territorial rights had been resolved, had a significant ripple effect in opening up opportunities. It is now nearly 10 years since the last well was drilled and at this point we can rightly ask whether new impetus has come back into exploration efforts.

Although there is currently no exploration activity in the Faroese sector much has happened in the last year on both sides of the border. There have been many discoveries in the UK sector as well as fields going into production On the Faroese side the geologists at Jarðfeingi (Faroese Geological Survey), as well as seismic and oil companies continued to study our subsoil. The result is that today we have a much better understanding of that subsoil – a knowledge which can well be a catalyst for a resumption of exploration. It has been the policy of both the current and previous Government that the Faroes should remain open for exploration. This was underlined by the recent debate in Parliament. To put it another way on both sides of the Faroes/ UK border there is now movement. Whilst the UK goes about developing the many oil and gas fields which encroach

right up to the border our dedicated staff at Jarðfeingi are clearing the way for future exploration here with their research. Looking at this scenario from the vantage point of Faroese suppliers there is no reason not to imagine that in, who knows, a relatively short time that we will again experience a big upsurge in activity of the type we saw in the noughties. And it is clear that Faroese suppliers who can offer an impressive variety of goods and services to both exploration activity in home waters and development work on the other side of the border are ready once again to play their part in these developments in both sectors When representatives from Faroese supply firms together with FOÍB took the initiative in 2018 to visit oil companies and suppliers in Aberdeen it was done with the aim of establishing a basis for future cooperation. In this model Faroese suppliers would be able to participate together with their British

counterparts in the supply chain providing goods and services for the forthcoming development related to oil and gas reserves found around the border. The delegation also took the opportunity to promote the advantages of the Faroes as a maritime service centre in the North Atlantic. Time will tell when this enterprise will really begin to bear fruit. Although the Trade Association representing the Faroese supply side, Oljuvinnufelag (Oil Industry Association) recently changed its name to Sjóvinnufelag (Maritime Industry Association) it is maybe just an illustration of a future trend in which as well as embracing industries related to oil and gas representative bodies extend

come home to deploy their experience and skills if oil or gas were found locally. There is no doubt that Faroese firms who provide various services both on land and at sea together with those Faroese currently working in the industry globally can play an important role in the prospective exciting and important activity on both sides of the Faroes/UK border. We know from experience how exploration activity generates work opportunities whilst the development of oil and gas fields in the UK sector particularly those close to the border offer the prospect of providing great economic opportunities and a significant income flow to Faroese society.

But this is happening with assistance from existing energy sources; hydrocarbons in particular. The Minister for the Environment, Industry and Trade, who has Energy in his portfolio has made it clear that whilst the Faroes will play its full part in the energy transition he wholeheartedly endorses the sentiments of the Norwegian Prime Minister who said that we should not seek to abolish the oil and gas industry but instead seek to develop it as part of the transition. In the recent Parliamentary debate, the Minister drew attention to the fact that the Faroes have a great number of estimable people currently working in the international oil industry who could

– what about it?

To explain the pattern of daily weather in the Faroe Islands is no simple task. There are many ifs and buts… The weather changes all the time, it nearly never stays the same for long periods of time. In the early morning there can be sunshine, a few hours later cloudy, then drizzle or rain – sometimes snow. In the evening the clouds open again and give us a few sunny spells before the sun goes down. We are placed in the middle of a huge ocean, we´re just a few cliffs sticking out of it! That is how we should think when it comes to the weather here in the Faroe Islands. It is the North Atlantic Ocean – and what goes on above it and in it – that influences the weather. The Gulf Stream makes our climate mild. Our winters are mild and the summers a bit cool with fog, when the wind direction is right. The highest and lowest temperatures ever measured are 26,3°C (july 2003) and 12,3°C (March 2001), respectively. Both temperatures were measured at Vagar Airport. The mean temperature is somewhat different. In summer the average temperature is about 12°C and in winter the average is about 3°C. Not much difference, this is Sub-Arctic maritime climate. Other places e.g. Southern Norway or Central Sweden which are on same latitude vary much more in temperature with much warmer summers and much colder winters. An important factor is all the dynamic lowpressure systems travelling this way from Eastern USA or Canada. They bring frequent changes in wind directions. When the low-pressure systems

travel fast across our area, we experience all wind directions in just a few hours and thus a variety of weather – cold mist, sunny spells, rain or drizzle, a leap and/or drop in temperature as well as snow or sleet. It also depends on how the low-pressure systems travel and where they go. When they are moving eastwards to the south of the Faroes the cold air from the Arctic comes down towards us. When they travel to the north of the Faroes warm air from south is brought up this way.

– as it is elsewhere. Looking at the numbers in the statistics there are changes to be seen. Most changes in temperature are in the winter. The mean temperature for September to March is rising slowly. On average the autumn is warmer than it used to be – thus delaying the beginning of winter. The winters are milder than they used to be – the days with snow are significantly fewer now. The changes come from the reduced amount of cold air decending from Polar region. There is very little doubt about that. Let us not forget the rising temperature curve for the area in the Arctic and the accelleration of melting of ice. It is in fact the consequences in the changes in the climate in the Polar region that we measure here in the Faroe Islands. While the temperature curves are slowly going upwards, we must get used to even warmer autumns and winters in the future with even longer periods between snowy winters. The curves have gone up and down ever since measuring began, but this time there is no sign of stopping it! – at least for now….

A saying among Faroese is that we can have all four seasons in just one morning! The dynamic systems with high or low pressure are at times not moving so fast – then the weather is more stable, of course. We were occupied by the British during second world war. They called the islands the land of maybe – mostly because of the weather and what the weather has done to the islanders. Sometimes in summer, the airflow can be from the high north taking the temperature all the way down to just a few degrees above freezing. A summer like that is very cold, especially in the northern part of the islands. In the southern islands the weather is much better, about 4-6 degrees warmer. Vice versa in the winter warm air from the European continent can bring the temperature up to almost 20 degrees. The statistics go back to 1860s. Initially the Scottish Meteorological Society put up a station in Torshavn in late 1860s, but ever since 1875 it has been Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). Providing hope and prosperity to the local community The company Christian í Grótinum and the ship with the same name has for a long time been associated with hope and prosperity. The brand new ship which entered the Klaksvík fishing fleet only a few months ago signals throughout the local community that things are going well in the utmost important Faroese industry branch, the fishing branch. The story of the Christian í Grótinum enterprise goes approximately fifty years back in time. In the early nineteen-seventies the first step was made to purchase a vessel for the company. This newest ship is state of the art when it comes to technology within fishing and is one of the most advanced and modern fishing vessels in the rapidly growing Faroese fishing fleet. It joins the ship “Norðborg” in the same company, which also was state of the art, when it arrived more than ten years ago. In Christian in Grótinum’s home town Klaksvík, the second largest town in the Faroes and the largest when it comes to the fishing industry, there is a saying that the economic crisis in the 1990’s ended, when the predecessor by the same name Christian í Grótinum sailed into the bay of Klaksvík in 1998, replacing the earliest Christian í

Grótinum ship. The contract to build this second Christian í Grótinum was with the brothers Helge and Ole Rasmus Møgster and was signed in 1997. By purchasing this newest Christian í Grótinumvessel the company has re-organized itself within different the two most important branches of the fishing industry. The caught fish can both be handled and processed on board, as well as the ship can deliver the raw fish in the highest possible quality to be processed on land. To be able to do both these things is a necessity to achieve and maintain the company’s position as a world class fishing production and sales business. The ship was built at the Kartensens Shipyard and building began 2 years ago, in July 2020. From then on it went very fast, and the hull was delivered to Skagen in Denmark in the summer of 2021 and was delivered in early 2022. The Faroese fishing companies have very good experiences with using the Kartensens Shipyard in Denmark, who have supplied the Faroe Islands with large, new, and modern fishing vessels for 45 years. The new Christian í Grótinum is approximately 90 metres long and is driven by a Wärtsilä 12V31 main engine with three caterpillar auxilary engines running on 1,360, 940, and 200 kWe. Wärtsilä is also the make of the gearbox and propeller plant. The ship accomodates up to 20 sailors, has a speed of 17.5 knots, and is of the DNV-GL +1A Fishing Vessel E0 Ice-C-class. Christian í Grótinum is a family-owned company. Kristian Martin Rasmussen and family are the owners of the company and the ship by the same name. Currently Jón Rasmussen, his father, and two brothers, run the company, in which Kristian Martin Rasmussen, Jón Rasmussen, Eyðun Rasmussen and Bogi Rasmussen each own 25% of. The name of both company and ship is the one of Jón Rasmussen’s great-grandfather. It is the second-largest fishing company on the Faroe Islands, and is run from Klaksvík.

Rói Vang, ið er stjóri og einsamallur eigari av RVtøkni, hevur arbeitt sum elektrikari og við PLC-loysnum seinastu 22 árini, og hevur tí drúgvar royndir innan virkisgreinina. Tá ið spurt verður um, hvussu hendan fyritøkan er vaksin, so vísir hann fyrst og fremst á stóru íløgurnar, ið alivinnan hevur gjørt seinastu árini. Tá ið tann fyrsti maðurin spurdi um arbeiðið, so segði eg við hann, at eg ivaðist í, um vit høvdu nokk, men hann plagar at minna meg á, at síðani tann dagin hevur hann næstan ikki verið í feriu, sigur stjórin flennandi.
