Forward

In order to move forward there has to be a place to move from. Grace & Glory Magazine has been a vibrant informative and inspirational publication for 14 years. Grace & Glory Magazine was created in 2006 as a spin-off of the television gospel program Grace & Glory that was created earlier in 2001 and had been broadcasting on WMAR-TV. The creator of the gospel program Grace & Glory was Mr. Drew Berry, and then General Manager of WMAR-TV, at that time Mr. Berry put the Grace & Glory program in my hands making me the associate producer of the show and then producer (which I have been for the last 19 years). In 2006 Mr. Berry came up with the concept of a print magazine version of the Grace & Glory program and also put the magazine in my hands. Premiere Issue

I believe that the Grace & Glory gospel program and subsequently the Grace & Glory Magazine were put in my hands for a purpose. I also believe our lives are designed to be purpose driven and we are always living in God's purpose. God works all things, including your life, according to His purposes, and He knows the plans He has for your life. I can

tell you none of this was my plan, but I stepped out on faith and took over the magazine independently when the broadcast station decided to cut ties with the magazine but continue airing the gospel program. Despite the fact that I had no formal training in the magazine business, it has been my persistent faith in God that He would always equip me with the tools, knowledge and grace that I would need to run the magazine. And so, the concept of a faith-based magazine patterned after the Grace & Glory program came to fruition and printed its first issue September 2006. Archbishop Ralph Dennis and Lady Deborah Dennis agreed to grace the cover of the premiere issue and was Continued on page 8 www.gracenglorymagazine.org  www.gracenglorymagazine.org 7 7

our first cover story. Since that premiere issue there have been 168 covers and cover stories. These stories have been the very foundation of the Grace & Glory Magazine covering Pastor’s anniversaries and retirements; Clergy appointments and elevations; the birth of new ministries; annual conferences; Gospel industry news; and social interest stories. It is with persistent faith that we look forward to continuing to covering all of these stories and so much more as we move forward. Grace & Glory Magazine has been blessed to have a steady flow of talented contributors throughout these 14 years who have shared their gifts with our audience faithfully each month. Many of our contributors have been with the magazine for multiple years with our longest running contributor being Dr. Carla Debnam, who writes our mental health column To Your Good Health. Our contributors are licensed health professionals, educators, financial advisors, life coaches, fitness experts and bloggers. Their columns have encouraged, educated, and empowered our readers with the focus on health and wellness physically, mentally, and spiritually.

were to look at all that has transpired this year, one might ask the question, “What next?” Regardless of what was going on around us, we have always looked to God for the answer to, “What next?” We believe the answer to this question is simply, “Next is now.” Whatever you are doing now is next. Next for the Grace & Glory Magazine is to embrace the new now; God is doing a new thing and now is the appointed time. Next for the magazine is to transition smart now. Transitioning smart is to switch the print publication to an online digital publication. We believe that now is the time to make this transition to an online digital magazine. This is what moving forward looks like for Grace & Glory Magazine. Many unprecedented things and events have occurred this year; and it all had some kind of impact on every person, family, industry, and market in the whole world. There is nothing that has happened or will happen that God is not aware of. As believers we live by God’s assurance that He is and will always be in control. No matter what is happening or even what it looks like, stay in the flow with God. God will always lead and guide you to keep moving forward.

Maximize Your Platform

Grace & Glory Magazine has been a printed publication for 14 years. While in recent years the print medium has declined dramatically, Grace & Glory Magazine continued to print its publications. With each anniversary year, the question would arise whether or not to continue to print another year status quo. No doubt, if we

Next for the magazine is to maximize our platform now. Maximize means to make the best use of, expand, and make as large or great as possible. from the editor educate, and motivate people by reaching them using all forms of media. Grace & Glory Magazine will utilize the platform it has established over the last 14 years and continue building on that foundation as we move forward as an online publication. There are many platforms out in the world today being used for many things; most platforms are used for some kind of social awareness and change. A platform can be beneficial and life-changing to those that are within its realm of influence and our goal and mission is to reach outside of the realm of influence to help others live their best life. Grace & Glory Magazine will always use its platform to shine a light in

dark places as long as God continues to lead and guides us forward. I am in total awe of what God has done for Grace & Glory Magazine and what He will do to fulfill His purpose. I believe that it was no accident this magazine landed in my hands, though quite frankly I have often wondered why I was chosen, there were certainly those who were more qualified. We often fall prey to the illusion that our lives don't matter and we have no connection or impact on the world around us. But it is God who qualifies us and makes us fit for His purpose. Before the foundation of the world, God knew the plans He had for our lives, and He is always working His plan.

Stress Management Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us,

We are certainly living in stressful times. Before the pandemic, economic downturn and continued racism, many people were facing personal crises and challenges. These multiple stressors have caused some people to give up and take on unhealthy habits in order to manage their fears, hurt and pain. Some are drinking, drugging, sexing, gambling and other forms of addiction. Others are taking out their frustrations on their children, spouses, parents, siblings, coworkers, church member, neighbors and strangers. We have seen rage and anger prevail over common sense, courtesy and compassion. Taking the precautions for our safety from coronavirus is a small ask but for some it has become a debate of their freedom and rights. All of these scenarios have caused us to be stressed beyond measure. We can work towards managing our stress by acknowledging that we are in a situation that has caused us discomfort and begin to actively seek to minimize the impact. A few of the actions we can take are to start a gratitude journal, make your surroundings as comfortable as possible, setup video chats with friends and family, listen to your favorite music or prepare and eat your favorite foods. There is no one-way to overcome stress. Being intentional and creative is the key and making the most of what’s readily available to you. Another tool is to treat yourself with kindness, patience and love. When under stress we can think that we are not supposed to react to our circumstances or situation. Nothing is further from the truth. We are human and will feel distressed and even unglued at times. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “For 12   September 2020 | Grace&Glory

“For everything there is a season” and 3:4, “a time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance”. everything there is a season” and 3:4, “a time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance”. This covers all of our emotions during this time in our world. Feeling stressed is normal. Find what works for you to relieve your stress. Make healthy choices that are not going to lead to more stress. Too much of anything can become a crutch and harmful. Pray about your fears and comfort your doubts with the word of God. All of these together will help you Dr. Carla Debnam, Founder, with managing your Renaissance Christian stress. Counseling Center

A Note from Nehemiah

Build Back Better Build back better! This was Nehemiah’s note to Jews before it was the campaign catchphrase of Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden. These three words are powerful and can propel you from your stance that you took to be reset ready to rev yourself up and begin again. Build back better is the perfect clarion call that can give you the boost to build a better you and to become all that God has destined for your life. Nehemiah broke down and cried when he found out that there were still no walls surrounding Jerusalem (Nehemiah 1:4). But he didn’t stay in that broken state. He boosted himself up and decided to build the walls back. You, too, can build yourself back again to be better, bolder, and can become bountifully blessed. Begin today to make up your mind to build back better and you are bound to be blessed of the Lord. To build back better you need balance. Balance is the beginning of setting a solid foundation for your life. This is your moment to start your mission to get back the balance of your mind, body, and spirit. You have to find the time to spend with the Lord to create a continuous communication regimen. Get your body aligned with your rebuild by exercising regularly, eating well, and getting proper rest. Your mindset will fall in place and you will be able to dismantle any doubts you may experience during the daily renewal of your mind. This will better position you to dismiss the doubts that try to destroy your destiny of building back better. To build back better you have to go beyond the barriers. Many obstacles will come to try to interrupt your process but proceed anyway. Nehemiah faced opposition on his mission to build the walls of Jerusalem back, but he did not get distracted, but he dealt with it with prayer (Nehemiah 4:1-9). Even in the mist of the opposition, he did not retreat but instead he had the confidence that God had his back when he poured out his heart and prayed so he kept pushing.

To build back better you have to bombard God with your prayers. You have to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Nehemiah was a man on a mission, and he made sure that no matter what he faced his first move was to pray and seek the Lord for protection, provision, and help to fulfill his purpose. Nehemiah was confident in the fact that God would bless his plans when he prayed. Nehemiah knew that his help came from the Lord. Prayer was always a part of Nehemiah’s plan to build the walls of Jerusalem back. God hears your prayers and wants to propel you to push past your fears and to build back better. To build back better you have to believe God. God wants to restore to you the days, months, and even years that were ruined (Joel 2:25). He can give you double the blessings for all that you have been through (Isaiah 61:7). With rebuilding comes renewal and the result of renewal is restoration. Building back better allows you to mend all of your mistakes. Restoration reveals a “better than the original” result. Building back better puts you in proper position to be ready to reap the harvest of bountiful blessings that the Lord promised to you. When you build back better you can expect God to exceed your expectations (Ephesians 3:20). To everyone’s surprise, the walls of Jerusalem were built back in 52 days (Nehemiah 6:15). This was the result of Nehemiah’s leadership, love for prayer, and a made-up mind to put in the work to build back better. God is waiting for you on the other side of your construction to build back better. Building back better will unleash loads of blessings and lead you to unexpected levels. Nehemiah’s note is a nudge for you to build back better!

monthly manna

Your BEST You Starts NOW! Welcome September! This month we recognize SelfCare Awareness Month. I believe this is a very appropriate time to encourage us all how imperative it is to take care of our mind, body and spirit. I have to check myself quite often. I will keep going and going as if there is a “W” on my chest. No matter how often I may think I am “Superwoman” I have to give myself a reality check. I am human! I am not a robot. I want to give you a reality check also. Your cape is worn out! It’s time to rest and reconnect with self. Let me take a few moments to be completely transparent with you. For the past two months, I have not been able to sleep. If you look inside the drawer of my night stand, you will find every type of sleeping aid there is. I remember one night it was so bad, I was in tears. I just cried out to the Lord and said, “Jesus, please allow me to sleep.” My eyes were burning. My head was hurting. I was in complete distress. The situation became so bad that I went to the emergency room. The Doctor confirmed that I had an extreme case of insomnia. I don’t know if any of you have ever dealt with insomnia, but it’s a very miserable situation to deal with. I came to the realization that there was a missing link. One thing that I was robbing myself of was self-care. I had to do a major shift in how I start and end my day. I had to be intentional even to the foods I consumed, and how I start relaxing my mind a few hours before bed time. I want to encourage you to do the same. I had a dear friend to send me this scripture that states, “It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.” (Psalm 127:2). I repeat this scripture every evening with confirmation. I say to the Lord, “Jesus, I thank you 16   September 2020 | Grace&Glory

that I have no need to ever be anxious. Because you love me, I receive a good night’s rest for my mind, body and spirit in Jesus name Amen!” Afterwards, I put on my diffuser and add lavender oil and softly play instrumental worship music. To top it off, I have a hot cup of sleepy tea! Hello sweet dreams! I am sharing this with you to encourage you to not neglect the things you may be in need of at the moment. Take time to make whatever adjustments necessary in order to start and finish your day well! Maybe for you it’s important to write a daily gratitude list, write yourself a love letter, talk less and listen more and HOPE (Help One Person Every day). Whatever you do, don’t neglect yourself. Your cape is tired and so are you? Don’t feel guilty about resting. Don’t feel guilty about rewarding yourself. Take time this month and re-evaluate whatever changes you need to make. Take time to embrace you. Take time to welcome the new things about you. Take time to accept your strengths and your weaknesses. I can’t stress Min. woman’s perspective There was a song I used to listen to by a Gospel group named Commission entitled, “Who Do Men Say I Am?” In that song a question was posed almost like the question was coming from Christ. Let’s backtrack some. Take a journey with me back to the beginning of the Bible. In Genesis, we as readers find that in the story of Adam and Eve. It was their disobedience that caused God to create a new plan, a plan of redemption. The birth and death of His son Jesus was His redemption plan that was about to be implemented in fullness after the conversation with the Disciples in Mark 8 concerning His identity. Mark 8: 27-30 says, “Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, Who do men say that I am? So they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets. He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered and said to Him, You are the Christ. Then He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him.”

Who Do You Say That He Is? Last month during my Rhoda’s Reflections blog, I spoke of a story about my mom and my younger brother, Richard. My mother was in the kitchen washing dishes in my childhood home looking out of the window. Richard was chasing a ball into the street, and a car was coming that Richard didn’t see. My mother yelled out at Richard. He stopped in his tracks as the car sped past. Why did my brother stop when my mother called him? He stopped because he recognized her voice, and he recognized his name. It’s something about a name; it is an identifying marker of who you are to others. My birth name or government name is Rhoda. I have several nicknames and titles that I respond to, but my name is Rhoda. When my mom named me and my siblings her objective in naming us was to make sure that when someone read our name it would give them a glimpse into who we are as a person. My mother would always remind my siblings and I about this when it was time to name our children; the importance of naming them knowing that they will be identified and perceived, even prejudged based on the name given. I’ve also instilled those instructions into my daughters as well, because of how important a name is.

18   September September2020 2020| |Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 18

This conversation happened right before Jesus was about to be crucified. Jesus was on an assignment, and He didn’t want His name to be revealed until the designated time. Though the Disciples knew who he was, He didn’t want Caesar to know his whereabouts until it was time. When Jesus asked the disciples, "Who do Men say that I am?", He wanted to be sure that His identity wasn’t revealed because of the given directive. His name spoke to His identity, who He was that was not yet perceived by everyone. Like my brother was to my mother's voice, we must be so turned into not only our identity, but also to the Lord's voice so that when He calls our name, He immediately has our attention. We hear others call us and immediately turn to them. Our attentiveness should be the same if not heightened to the Lord's voice. We must also be like Peter and properly discern the Lord in our midst; His voice and His presence. This will help us identify that the One who is calling our name is worthy of our attention. His name is Jesus, and His name is greater than any other name. Like the disciples were asked, I ask you, "Who do you say that He is?" I say that He’s the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. He’s Alpha and Omega. He’s the beginning and the end. He is my everything and I love and adore Him. Pastor Rhoda Turner Christian Faith Fellowship Church Chandler, AZ www.cffaz.org

I don’t look at this in a fearful way because God did not give us a spirit of fear, but he has given us the spirit of love, power and a sound mind. (2 Tim1:7) This is the time where we can discover who we truly are. We can apply everything we have learned over the course of our lives during this crisis. We can no longer just be hearers of the word, but now we must become doers. (James 1:22) Everything we need to overcome these challenging times is already embedded inside of us. There is no need to look outside of yourself to reach your fitness, spiritual and financial goals. Arguably, I believe that your physical health is what it will take to win this battle that we are currently facing. Undoubtedly, prayer changes things and faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1) However, the most powerful spiritual leader is ineffective with a weak and sickly body. You can know the bible from cover to cover and quote every verse, but we all need to address any underlining health issues right now. We must prepare ourselves for the winter and flu season today. This is the perfect time to start. You are not alone. Be encouraged! We already have the victory. No matter what your current health situation is, I will give you the tools you need to jump start. It’s no longer an option. You must start building your immune system and increase your metabolism to help manage your weight. If I could do it for you, I would in a heartbeat. Here we go!

NUTRITION

Here is a simple plan we all can follow together. Eighty percent of fitness is nutrition. I am the first one to admit that doing stressful times, I have a tendency of eating and drinking the wrong things. I have found a helpful solution that’s been working well for my clients and me. I call it the Break Free Three Detox. You simply do a modified detox cleanse Monday-Wednesday twice a month. It’s similar to the now popular intermittent fasting craze. I suggest doing smoothies, soups, salads, herbal teas and water for 3 days and Thursday- Sunday choose healthy meal habits with Friday being your treat and eat what you want day. This plan is doable. Incorporate this program twice a month and watch how fast your body and health will change. I know this works! I personally dropped around 15 pounds in the month of August doing this regiment with exercise.

FITNESS

This is such a great time to take a walk or workout outside because the weather is great, and you can practice social distancing. Your neighborhood or a nearby park is perfect. You can jump rope, weight train, power walk and even stretch your body with family and friends. There is something for everyone. Just get moving. Get out of the house and do something that will enhance your quality of life. Come winter, it’s no telling what the weather will bring. Take advantage of this time. If you need a jumpstart, invest into a personal trainer to help you get started. If you still feel uncomfortable with coming out, I respect that. There are ways that you can still get started now. Social media and the internet have tons of programs you can do at home. If you are new to fitness, I would recommend a few workout sessions virtually with a certified trainer to give you a personalized exercise program. Modern technology is so cool that you can train with the use of your cell phone. How awesome is that! The enemy comes to kill steal and destroy, but I come that you may have life and life more abundantly. (John 10:10)
