Matthew 28:1-6 (NIV)

1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.

4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

6 He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.

Philippians 2:9-11 (KJV)

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Happy Resurrection Sunday!

For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

SHARE THE “GOOD NEWS” OF JESUS CHRIST!

This month Christians all over the world will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We will trace the steps and events that led to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. We will remember the seven last utterances of Jesus from the cross. We will tell the story of how Jesus died on the cross on Friday, how he was buried in a borrowed tomb and how on the third day, early Sunday morning, He rose from the dead with all power in His hands. We call this the “Good News” of Jesus Christ!

As believers, can you imagine a life without Jesus? What would life be like if Jesus had not got up from the grave? It would be a life without hope. We would be most miserable. In the times of trouble we would not be able to go to the throne of God boldly with our petitions. And more important, we would not have Jesus sitting at the right hand of God as our intercessor pleading our case to

the Almighty God. But, because He lives, we have hope, and we have a peace that the world does not understand.

But the story does not stop there. We as believers have the responsibility to keep the story alive. As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ there will be many who will not be celebrating because they are not aware of the “Good News”. It would be a shame if we as believers did not take this awesome opportunity to share the “Good News” with non-believers.

This is the perfect season to give those who are without hope a hope. This is the perfect time to let those who walk in darkness know that Jesus is the light of the world. Someone needs to know that Jesus came so that we would be able to live life victoriously. Someone needs to know today that Jesus is our Savior, and that today is their day of salvation.

EPPSJackie

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13

“Resurrection Sunday” is the highest celebration in the Christian life. How awesome it would be to share the “Good News” during this season with our brothers and sisters and see their lives be changed by the salvation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That would be a glorious “Resurrection Sunday” for all!

Seize Your Opportunity

Spring is here. The trees, flowers, bushes and animals are all showing signs of new life. The cherry blossoms are blooming, the birds are singing and the sound of baseballs and bats are in the air. Nature is letting us know that we have an opportunity to grow and expand our view of what we can accomplish with a new and fresh outlook. With everything that has been going on in some of our lives, having fresh and new experiences is just what is needed to be refreshed, refocused and renewed.

past dictate our future instead of letting the past propel us into our future. Growing from the past experiences that are good or bad is possible when we view them with a fresh perspective. The Prophet Isaiah shares this message to encourage us when we are faced with a new opportunity, “The Lord says, “Forget what happened before, and do not think about the past. Look at the new thing I am going to do. It is already happening. Don’t you see it? I will make a road in the desert and rivers in the dry land.” Isaiah 43:18-19 (NCV.

One of the ways that you and I can seize the opportunity to change and grow is to forget the season that just ended and embrace the season we are in now. Many times we let the

Another key to seizing new opportunities is to realize there is no need to wait. The new thing that we have been looking for is happening now. We are often looking for what’s next and as a result we miss what is happening now. Now is the time we can make changes, create new vision or fulfill our purpose. There is no need to wait for a better time. Now is the best time to take advantage of all that you have been putting off because of doubt and fear. If not now, when will you move forward and take the steps to embrace the new thing God is planning for your life? It is time to see what God sees and to do what God’s calling you to do. Seizing opportunity is seeing God at work and joining in the work to accomplish the vision that God has prepared for your life. Do not let this change in seasons pass you by. The change you seek is within reach. You just have to take hold of it.

ZOOM OUT

I was listening to a sermon recently from Pastor Steven Furtick, of Elevation Church, and he was talking about invisible prisons. He talked about at times we can make invisible prisons when we feel that God has not met our expectations. In his sermon, he referenced John the Baptist in Matthew 11:2-3. John the Baptist had become discouraged. He was in prison, actual prison, but wanted to get a message to Jesus to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else.” At that moment John the Baptist created an invisible prison. Why, because sometimes we can make invisible prisons when we think God should move in the way we expect or like.

Listen, there are things, major things and changes happening in my life right now that some of you wouldn’t believe. If I told you, you would say, “Oh this sounds like a movie you would see on lifetime.” There are still many moments when I don’t understand what God is doing and why, and I am saying, “God where are you?” I know it’s not kosher for a Minister of the gospel who should be FULL of FAITH to say that, but guess what, I did. I not only said it, but I screamed it!

I want to share with you something Pastor Steven said. When he said it, it blessed my soul and totally shifted my mindset. He said that at times we are so focused on our own expectation that the Lord really needs us to ZOOM OUT. Once we Zoom out we will see that He has been there all along. I want to place that in your spirit as well! Maybe you are reading this article and like me you

screamed, “God where are you?” Beloved, it’s time to ZOOM OUT! Step back and take FULL inventory. Yes, we may have gone through the unthinkable and unimaginable, but He who has begun a good work in you is faithful to perform. (Philippians 1:6)

Zoom out and see how He has protected you. Zoom out and see how He has provided for you. Zoom out and see how He has positioned you. I read a daily devotional and the author stated how in this year 2019 we are going from story to glory. Zoom out and stop focusing on the story but rather the glory of the Lord upholding you at a higher standard to make a greater impact.

Zoom out! Maybe it’s time for you to let go of your expectation to trust that the God you serve and love, has a greater one. I am not saying not to have expectations, but what I am saying is if God doesn’t move in the way you expected, will you believe that there is a greater purpose and a greater plan? I like what Pastor Steven said, “We have to resist the urge to control God!” I never thought about it that way, but I do believe that if I stay in that invisible prison, I will miss God’s ultimate plan. Beloved, hear the voice of the Lord, “Blessed is he who allows and welcomes me to be God outside of what they think I should do or act.” May the Lord take us from story to glory! ZOOM OUT! In Jesus Name.

Image is Everything

Maintaining your Godly and professional image. Managing your personal information, protecting your image.

There are some things that shouldn’t be revealed about yourself in your professional environment. Whether you’re working for a company or for yourself, this would also include pastors and leaders. One of the reasons for me writing this article is I’ve had some personal experiences of trying to maintain a professional image, one being a pastor, another as a public figure, as an elected official. I can remember being at a political fundraiser when I was caught off guard by someone venting their opinion on some political issue, in which I responded with a somewhat raised voice. After having this disagreement, one of my colleagues came to me and offered some advice, in which I adhered to even up to now, he told me in this field it’s important to be professional, the other thing he said was that you are in a room that because of your color you are the minority, you stand out which makes you highly visible. He then shared some wisdom with me, you have to learn when and how to respond in public, your voice stands out. Then he tells me something that was so profound at that time, he said, “Melvin, image is everything.” My whole mindset changed, and I got it.

“It’s not about what you drive, but about what drives you.”

“It’s not about where you live, it’s about the life that you live.”

Creating Your Image

Image is everything: What does it mean by saying image is everything?

In the field public relations, its popularity said, “Image is everything.” And yes, your image does make a lot of difference in how you are perceived or treated. Your image is your public presentation of who you are, it gives a general impression of that person as well as your business organization or product. I can remember being corrected after giving a sermon, the correction was not on the message but on my pronunciation of a word. I can also remember on another occasion where I was corrected on pronunciation of a name I used in my sermon. Afterwards I became more mindful of my word pronunciation, even in everyday conversations, I would ask did I say that correctly. Mindfulness is very important when creating a personal image of yourself.

Is image everything? No image is not everything, but your image is a very important thing, not just for the public view, but also for oneself. How do you see yourself, what do you see when you look in the mirror. There was a popular song years ago called, Man In The Mirror, in one part of the song the lyrics would say, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror, I’m asking him to change his ways. And no message could’ve been any clearer…. If they wanna make the world a better place… take a look at yourself and then make a change.”

Is your physical image important? The answer is yes, your physical image is very important. Not so much as the clothes,

shoes, or hairstyle is concerned. But exercise eating habits etc. are very important in your presentation. When a person adorns themselves, with makeup, hair style, etc., being who you are, being authentic is that important, but being authentic outwardly shouldn’t be your main focus, inwardly should be, being authentic inwardly. What comes out of your mouth is the true reflection of who you are. I see people spend hundreds of dollars weekly on hair, fingernails, clothes, etc., they invest more on their outward appearance rather than inwardly. And they give this impression to their children and close family that what you look like on the outside is more important than what’s on the inside. It’s like in some cases the young child that goes to school with name brand shoes and clothes, and hair styles, but can’t read and write and in some cases don’t know their own name. They only know their nickname.

When maintaining your professional life there needs to be a certain level of restraint, what to share, what not to share, who to share with and who not to share with, when and when not to share. I have to admit I’ve not always been able to manage my privacy, even though I am a very private person. There’s a difference between being private and being secretive. Being a pastor for twenty-five years trying to be transparent with leaders as well as members, keeping your privacy can be very challenging. When to share and when not is the key. Just because someone may share a personal or private matter, doesn’t make you obligated to share as well. It’s important to keep a certain level of restraint in maintaining your professional life.

THINGS TO HOLD FROM SHARING

1. Personal ambitions and goals.

2. Negative feelings towards a colleague or friend.

3. Your likes and dislikes concerning your job.

4. Personal life, vacations, things you like to do outside of work, hobbies.

5. Your financial challenges good or bad.

While it’s important to be authentic or genuine, even transparent, there are certain things that are better left unsaid. Remember Image is everything, protect your privacy, protect and maintain your image.

Genesis 1:27, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him, male and female created he them.”

What Did It Cost You?

Rhoda

TURNER

I was watching a limited series entitled “Gangs of London”. I won’t go into much detail of what the series is about just in case you want to watch it. I will share this. One of the characters in this movie made me think about how we walk around in life not truly giving up anything but wanting to obtain everything. There’s an idiom that says, “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.”

Essentially, it means you can’t have two incompatible things simultaneously, like wanting to keep a cake while also eating it, because once you eat it it’s gone; it’s used to tell someone they can’t have the best of both worlds in a situation where they need to make a choice.

Jesus was a true example of sacrificing one thing to gain another. He gave up His life so that we could have eternal life. Originally that

wasn’t the initial plan. It was an alternative plan for the Son to die, however, the backup plan had to be utilized.

A lot of times we walk around wanting everything but not willing to give up anything. The Bible asks a question about sacrifice, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Matthew 16:26 NKJV

Sacrifice is actually a task that will make you stronger, it’s a level of discipline. There are several scriptures that can be used to help develop you. Sacrifice is needed it helps develop the spirit man and discipline your flesh. I’m not willing to sacrifice my soul for my flesh. Denying of the flesh is a daily walk, temptation is everywhere, and we have to come to a place in life knowing that God is worth it. The first denial of flesh was Adam and Eve. The commandment was given and broken. Which shows us that sacrifice isn’t easy but necessary.

I remember one time the church that I was attending went on an absolute fast. The first day wasn’t absolute fast, it was a building fast, each day required something else to be removed from your daily routine. The first couple of days was reducing your social media time. The second couple of days were reducing TV time, without neglecting the first day, and each day was designed to become more difficult. I was doing well with building up from something that was easy to something more difficult. The difficulties came in when we got to the food and then water only. Child that was hard it was my first and last attempt at an absolute fast. I promise you this, I was on board and victorious; I had never had such a greater sacrifice. I was so glad that I was able to accomplish that. It helped me set boundaries and it disciplined my flesh. Don’t get me wrong my flesh still wanted things but me being able to complete that fast helped me to deny my flesh better as an adult. Sacrifice isn’t meant to be easy, when you know why you are sacrificing it becomes easier.

God made the biggest sacrifice for us. He led the way showing us what denial looks like.

DAILY DEVOTIONS

(Excerpts from

NEW DAY FRESH START-

by Brandie

Manigault)

DAY 1

There will be times when a request is made of you from people who you know do not like you and mean you no good. In fact, they may even have a campaign out against you and go out of their way to discredit you, make you look bad, and try to persuade others to join their “team”. These are people who you may feel have no right to ask anything of you, but in these instances you must oblige. For the sake of your integrity and overall peace, you must grant their request. As hard as it may be, you have to be the bigger person during these times and treat them like Christ treated those who He knew for certain were ‘anti-Jesu’, merciful, forgiving, loving, peaceful, and gracious. Challenge: Today challenge yourself to not automatically reject the requests made by your enemy. Show them the love and compassion of Christ.

Matthew 8:31-32

So the demons begged Him, saying, “If You cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of swine.” And He said to them, “Go.” So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine.

DAY 2

Let’s not be discouraged if all the good that we are doing is not received well by others all the time. There will be times when we will want to help our family and friends, but they do not perceive our help as being help. They may view it as us trying to change them or make them conform to a way of life that they do not want. Change cannot be forced. Some people are not ready to change; it is not convenient for them. It has to be welcomed, accepted and embraced. If people do not receive our help, we must accept that it is ok, knowing that we had good intentions and did what we felt was right in our heart. Just consider it a seed sown in their life to be watered by someone else at a later time. Challenge: Today challenge yourself to keep sowing seeds of help; love beyond the rejection and to try not to take it personally.

Matthew 8:34

And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region.

DAY 3

It’s time to start peeling back and dealing with the layers of the person you have become by default. Past seasons have left you broken, and you have learned to function with this disability. You didn’t mean to become bitter and angry. You didn’t start out a skeptic and pessimist. You never had trust issues, but somewhere on this journey you were hurt, let down, and disappointed, and at that point you began to change in subtle ways; so subtle that you didn’t even notice it. Now you look in the mirror and don’t recognize the person looking back at you. You are not happy with you, and you don’t know why or how you got to this place. The good news is that today is a great day to start over. It’s a new day, and you don’t have to be the person that you don’t want to be. Today you can make a change.

Challenge: Today challenge yourself to view the world through

the untrained eyes of the person that you desire to be; give people a fair chance; see the good before you see the bad; trust before you disqualify. Be the you that you want to be.

Matthew 9:16-17

No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.

DAY 4

Sometimes you just have to talk to yourself! No matter what the situation looks like and no matter what other people are saying about your situation, there will be those moments when you have to say to yourself, “I am better than this.” “This thing won’t be me.” “I am who my Daddy says I am.” Your circumstance may give you a visual of a defeated you, a sick you, or a depressed you, but you know better than that. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are healed and whole. Your sins are forgiven. You are worth it. Voices that say otherwise are just distractions to keep you from seeing you the way your Father sees you, and to keep you from going after greatness. Challenge: Today challenge yourself to talk to yourself! Remind yourself that you are healed. Tell yourself how wonderful you are. Speak highly of yourself to yourself and drown out the noise of the world.

Matthew 9:21-22

For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.

DAY 5

When we were called by Jesus to follow Him, we weren’t just called so that we could be good people and live a nice life. We were given a God-given ability to change lives. There is a time to sit at the Master’s feet to learn from Him, but then there comes a time when He sends us out into places that need what we have received while being with Him; a chance for change. The great part about being sent out by Jesus is that He equips us to do the work. He doesn’t leave it to us to have to figure it out. He gives us the power to speak into the lives of hurting people and to pray for the sick and see results. He molds us for the assignment.

Challenge: Today challenge yourself to say “yes” to be sent out. Leave your comfortable spot at the feet of Jesus and go do the work He told you to do.

Matthew 10:1 (MSG)

The prayer was no sooner prayed than it was answered. Jesus called twelve of his followers and sent them into the ripe fields. He gave them power to kick out the evil spirits and to tenderly care for the bruised and hurt lives.

April Is Stress Awareness Month

April is Stress Awareness Month. April has been recognized as National Stress Awareness Month since 1992 to raise awareness of the causes and cures of modern-day stress. It is when we have an opportunity for an open conversation on the impact of stress on our lives. Many studies have identified the cause of stress and how individuals react to it differently.

Stress is a widespread feeling that almost everyone experiences at one time or another. Everyone is likely, at times to be negatively impacted by stress. A survey by the American Psychological Association found that the five factors most often cited as a source of stress were money, work, family, economic outlook and relationships.

Stress can affect a person’s physical, mental or emotional health, sometimes affecting all three areas. When left untreated, stress can extend its effects, causing major health issues, including anxiety and depression, difficulty sleeping, high blood pressure, social adjustment disorders, and heart disease. A recent survey found that about two-thirds of U.S. workers report engaging in behavior such as drinking or crying regularly in order to deal with stress.

Stress is primarily a physical response that can be motivating. Stress signals the body to think it is under attack and switches to ‘fight or flight’ mode. The presence of stress releases a complex mixture of hormones and chemicals, such as adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine, to prepare the body for physical action. By releasing these chemicals, the heart pumps faster, blood pressure rises, and we breathe more quickly and deeper. Stress causes increased muscle blood flow, promoting movement in difficult situations.

Additional problems occur when our body goes into a state of stress in inappropriate situations. Blood flow to the muscles is diverted from the brain, potentially causing the person to be less likely to think clearly and react quickly to issues. Continued stress can be detrimental. Problems occur when the body does not have time to recover and repair itself from continued periods of stress.

April signals that spring has arrived. It’s a month of new beginnings. It’s a great time to take control of the stress that

may impact your life. Researchers suggest several methods to reduce stress. Detatch yourself from your technology and connect with friends. Positive social connections and support are proven methods to reduce stressors. Having appropriate social relationships builds resilience to stress and releases stress-relieving hormones that reduces symptoms and increases feelings of well-being. Engage in breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques. These are mindfulnessbased interventions and are effective in the alleviation in intense physical impact of overwhelming mental and emotional states. Commit to increasing physical activity. Increased physical activity can take many forms, including yoga, bike riding, swimming, gym activities and walking. These activities can relieve stress and promote physical and mental well-being. Activity does not need to be extensive or intense and can be modified to meet your individual needs. Add a hobby to your lifestyle; having a hobby provides a creative outlet that you could possibly share with others. Meditate on God’s word. The scripture tells us, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 6-7, NKJV). Reassert that God is in control. Finally, learn to say “NO”. Reassess what is important to you, your family and your personal ministry. Declutter your life by eliminating negative people and meaningless activities.

Many individuals assume that feelings of fatigue and weariness are normal. They do not consider these feelings as symptoms of stress. Are you still not sure if you are experiencing stress? Take this simple survey sponsored by the Stress Management Society https://www. stress.org.uk/individual-stress-test/ . Evaluate your test outcomes and take control of the stress in your life. Your life, family and ministry depend on you to be healthy and living the best life of all.

Tip 1

Achieving goals doesn’t come easy. The level of success we reach and how fast we do it depend on how committed we are. When we dedicate ourselves completely to living out the financial future, we want for ourselves and the next generation, we’ll be more willing to make the sacrifices necessary today. Remember, a temporary ‘no’ to what I want now, means a ‘yes’ to what I want in the future.

Tip 2

These four things are simple concepts to understand, but a little more difficult to put into practice. When you’re on the journey to achieving financial freedom, these things will always help you stay on track. ** Don’t spend more than you make. Remember what you’re working toward & what you want to accomplish. Exercise self-discipline when it comes to spending. Never stop learning about the best ways to make your dream a reality. ** Your future self and the next generation will thank you!

Tip 3

It’s fairly natural to compare ourselves to others and social media certainly doesn’t help. It takes a conscious effort to practice gratitude for what you have and be grateful for where you are in your journey to avoid buying things to keep up with someone else. Stay focused on the positives in your own life and the goals you want to accomplish, then spend accordingly.
