PROGRAM OVERVIEW
FLEX (FOREIGN LANGUAGES EXCELLENCE) is a co-curricular opportunity offered to Year 8 students as part of the wider IGNITE EXCELLENCE opportunities at Grace Lutheran College. The purpose of the co-curricular FLEX opportunity is to provide students with a pathway to maintain and further develop their language skills outside the classroom and explore the Japanese culture in greater depth.
The FLEX opportunity will be provided in the way of lunch time or afternoon sessions, once a fortnight. On some occasions, longer events and/or incursions and excursions may also occur for FLEX participants.
The FLEX opportunity at the Caboolture Campus is facilitated via Japanese immersion, a style of delivery where the teacher will only speak to students in Japanese. This gives students the opportunity to experience authentic language in practice and develop their aural and speaking proficiency in a casual setting without the pressure of assessment deadlines.
In Terms 1 - 3, the program covers a variety of words and sentence structures through games and story-based learning. In Term 4, students participate in a series of advanced cultural workshops, and (where possible) an excursion, to explore a number of aspects of Japanese culture in more depth. Attendance at the Term 4 workshops is limited to those students who have been part of FLEX for the duration of the year.
FLEX forms part of the College’s overall structure for the development of skills and talent in the area of foreign languages.
