Alumni Feature

Nathan Slater

Internship at NATO- ACT, Norfolk,VA Following my graduation in May 2015 from GPIS, I embarked upon a six-month internship at the NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT) Headquarters here in Norfolk. NATO ACT is a military strategic command, and directs the “transformation” of the alliance. From the military perspective, transformation can be thought of as a long-term, forward thinking and proactive changing of structure, doctrine, and capabilities to enable and empower a more effective, efficient, and capable force. My position is within the Commander’s Action Group, a subsection of the Supreme Commander’s office that provides independent analysis on NATO work strands and relevant issues, and prepares the Commander for his engagements. Although required to maintain a general working knowledge and familiarity with a broad range of topics affecting NATO, I specifically deal with cyber defence, nuclear policy, and energy security, preparing point papers, lines to take, and memos concerning these topics. I work both with the staff officers and subject matter experts in these areas, and the other Action Group members to provide specific analysis and recommendations on NATO policies and products. The multicultural and multilingual nature of the organization provides an interesting and diverse environment, and an opportunity to exchange views and work collaboratively with a wide variety of experienced and knowledgeable people. Given recent security trends in Europe, now is a very interesting and active time for

NATO, both internally, in coming to consensus based decisions amongst the 28 allies, and externally, in dealing with instabilities and a rapidly changing security environment. As a member of the Action Group, I am able to put the critical thinking and analysis skills honed during my time at GPIS to daily use, and my daily work concerns topics of relevance stressed in my classes at ODU: collective security, interdependence, globalization, as well as more specific and emerging concepts, such as hybrid warfare. Although my time at NATO is nearing its close, I will use the skills and experiences gleaned from my internship in my future endeavours in the field of political economics. Fellowship Opportunities AMERICAN COUNCIL OF LEARNED SOCIETIES Comparative Perspectives on Chinese Culture and Society ACLS invites proposals in the humanities and related social sciences that adopt an explicitly cross-cultural or comparative perspective. Projects may, for example, compare aspects of Chinese history and culture with those of other nations and civilizations, explore the interaction of these nations and civilizations, or engage in cross-cultural research on the relations among the diverse and shifting populations of China. Proposals are expected to be empirically grounded, theoretically informed, and methodologically explicit. Deadline: 11/4/15 For more information visit http://www.acls.org/programs/chinese-culture/ AMERICAN COUNCIL OF LEARNED SOCIETIES Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Program in China Studies The Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Program in China Studies seeks to maintain the vitality of China Studies in North America through fellowships and grants designed primarily for scholars early in their careers. Studies on and in China have developed over the last 30 years in the United States and Canada into a robust field, but current conditions pose daunting problems, especially for scholars just before and just after the dissertation. · Postdoctoral Fellowships For scholars who are preparing or augmenting their PhD dissertation research for publication, or who are embarking on new research projects. Postdoctoral fellowships support work based on the applicant’s research in China that aims to produce a scholarly text in English. A working knowledge of Chinese is required. · Collaborative Reading-Workshop Grants For scholars of different disciplines to investigate texts that constitute essential points of entry to Chinese periods, traditions, communities, or events in contemporary or historical times. These grants provide support for collaborative reading of texts in a workshop format that is interdisciplinary and crosses scholarly generations. A wealth of often complex and challenging texts is a distinctive feature of the Chinese cultural record, making close reading by a group of scholars especially fruitful, because they can bring to bear diversity of research, experience, and expertise. Deadline: 11/4/15 For more information visit http://www.acls.org/programs/china-studies/ Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) Program The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship Program is an interdisciplinary training program that helps early-stage doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences formulate doctoral research proposals. To that end, the program offers workshops, exploratory summer research, and writing opportunities guided by faculty mentorship and peer review. Eligibility The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship is open to pre-ABD doctoral students who are enrolled in PhD programs at accredited universities within the United States. Students in the humanities, social sciences, and related disciplines are welcome to apply. For more information on eligibility and selection criteria, please visit our website.
