Old Dominion University will host an address by U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry to discuss policy on the challenges associated with climate change. A university spokesperson says ODU was selected because of the school’s leadership role in research and education surrounding sea level rise — including their Climate Change and Sea Level Rise initiative and the nation’s first intergovernmental pilot project. While in Norfolk, Kerry will also tour the USS San Antonio, one of the Navy’s newest amphibious ships.

State Department Spokesman John Kirby said the tour is to gain better understanding of the Navy’s clean air initiatives, as well as the efforts being taken by the Navy in Hampton Roads to deal with climate change and sea level rise.

Erika Frydenlund

Erika Frydenlund is a Senior Project Scientist at VMASC and was awarded an M&S Fellowship by the College of Arts & Letters. She recently completed her PhD in International Studies with an emphasis in International Political Economy and Development and Modeling & Simulation from ODU. Her PhD committee was comprised of Dr. Jennifer Fish (ODU Women’s Studies), Dr. David Earnest (ODU Graduate Program in International Studies, and Associate Dean of Arts & Letters) and Dr. Dorian Crosby (Spelman College, Political Science).

Additionally, Dr. Frydenlund completed an interdisciplinary M&S graduate certificate. Her scholarship was recognized this summer when she was accepted into the prestigious, 21st Annual Graduate Workshop in Computational Social Science Modeling and Complexity in Sante Fe, New Mexico. Her project for the workshop centered on the Pedestrian Agent-based Model that she has been creating for ODU’s Center for Innovative Transportation Solutions. The project evaluates spatial and temporal changes in refugee flows. Frydenlund is interested in using modeling techniques to influence humanitarian policies concerning refugee populations. Erika’s advice: “Don’t limit yourself to one particular discipline. Keep your mind open to collaboration, and keep your eyes open for opportunities to get your work out into the world. M&S is catching on in many different fields, and the things I learn from my transportation modeling work at VMASC often relate to my interests in social science. As an example, the pedestrian model I work on for VMASC reinforces the

Call for Papers/Fellowships The International Political Economy Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (IPES) Virtual IPES Virtual IPES aims to further integrate and socialize the IPE/CPE community, serve as an outlet for the many papers that are the annual IPES meeting is unable to fit and improve the chances that the papers discussed are published in reputable outlets. Papers accepted to the Virtual IPES Spring 2016 session will be circulated to four discussants each of whom will be asked to prepare comments. An online meeting will follow where the author gives a brief overview of the paper and then receives feedback from each discussant. The schedule of workshops will be posted online so others interested in the topics may join in and provide feedback, and completed workshops are archived online as well at https://ncgg.princeton.edu/IPES/drupal/virtualIPES. Spring 2016 Virtual IPES timeline and format: Submissions for Virtual IPES are due on November 15. Submissions must be full papers. -

Four papers will selected in early December and scheduled for discussion in Spring 2016.

Each workshop will last 60-90 minutes and will be held using Google Hangout.

Each workshop will have a chair and four discussants, recruited by the Virtual IPES committee. There is no formal presentation. A chair moderates the discussion and as the discussants make their points, the author is given an opportunity to respond. The schedule of workshops is posted on the Virtual IPES website (https://ncgg.princeton.edu/IPES/ drupal/virtualIPES) ahead of time and completed workshops are archived online as well. To be considered, submit a full paper by email to ipes@princeton.edu. EUSA Haas Fund Fellowship Competition The 2015-2017 EUSA Executive Committee is pleased to announce the 2015 EUSA Haas Fund Fellowship Competition, an annual fellowship for graduate student EU-related dissertation research. Thanks to contributions to our Ernst Haas Memorial Fund for EU Studies, launched in June 2003 to honor the memory of the late scholar Ernst B. Haas (1924-2003), we will offer up to three unrestricted fellowships of up to $3,000 to support the dissertation research of any graduate student pursuing an EU-related dissertation topic in the academic year 2015-2016. Students on this multi-day program will have the opportunity to practice their French language skills through real life, immersive experiences in Québec, Canada. This program is structured to enhance spoken French language learning through intensive language training coupled with experiences focused on Québécois identity and culture in Montréal and Québec City. Through a combination of classroom study and cocurricular activities, students will expand their French language skills while experiencing Québécois identity and culture as formed and expressed through history, arts and architecture, literature and language, societal and governmental practice and policy, cuisine, and other aspects. An excursion to Québec City is also included.
