In the enchanting world of social media influencing, success stories often mask the struggles and obstacles that lie beneath the glamorous surface. Let’s dive a little into the motivating story of Yolanda Smallegange, a resilient individual whose venture into the realm of online fame was anything but ordinary.

Born in Curaçao from a Dutch mom and a Curaçaoan dad, Yolanda lived in Curaçao for 9 years and then moved to the Netherlands due to her brother having ADHD and Autism. Due to homesickness Yolanda saved up some money and came back on her own after 9 years. She liked it so much that she decided to move to Curaçao with her dad. Yolanda participated in Miss Universe Curacao 2013 and won 2nd runner up. She also participated in a pageant in Germany. She fell in love with traveling and decided to move to the USA to pursue her studies in Business administration with a minor in Accounting.

Her journey began after attending a party hosted by the illustrious Taz’s Angels at the renowned Spoons venue. Little did Yolanda know that this serendipitous encounter would set in motion a series of events that would forever change her life. The Taz's Angels were captivated by Yolanda's magnetic presence and extended an invitation to stay with them in Miami on numerous occasions. As the Angels featured Yolanda in their social media posts, their vast number of followers soon embraced this newfound internet personality. Collaborations with major brands like Hairfinity and Fashion Nova followed suit, elevating Yolanda's status on social media. Despite never envisioning a career in social media influencing, Yolanda seized the opportunity that fate had presented.

After giving birth to her son Yolanda and her partner, Greyan, embarked on a joint venture, creating a YouTube channel. Observing the success of the ACE Family, they recognized the absence of similar content creators here in Curaçao. With careful planning and dedication, Yolanda and Greyan established a posting routine, sharing videos every Monday The positive response from their audience was overwhelming, and their channel's viewership skyrocketed. Encouraged by this unforeseen success, they increased their posting frequency to three times a week, unaware of the extraordinary journey that awaited them

Life, however, has a way of throwing unexpected challenges into our path. Amid their flourishing career, Yolanda received a devastating diagnosis Cancer, a formidable adversary, stealthily crept into Yolanda’s life, manifesting itself after the birth of their daughter, Skye. Alarming signs of severe hair loss and fatigue emerged, leaving Yolanda perplexed, as these symptoms had not accompanied her previous childbirth. Unbeknownst to her, these warning signs were not mere consequences of breastfeeding but indicators of a more significant issue. It was a persistent lump on Yolanda's throat, noticed by a concerned follower in their YouTube videos who prompted them to seek medical attention.

After undergoing several tests and blood work that yielded inconclusive results, Yolanda consulted a surgeon who recommended a biopsy. The results showed varying numbers on the scale of malignancy, leaving Yolanda with a difficult decision: let it be or undergo surgery to remove the lump. Yolanda courageously chose the latter, and it was only after the excised tissue was sent to the lab that the heartwrenching truth was revealed – it was Thyroid cancer (Schildklier kanker). Not even the doctors expected it, due to it being such a rare cancer. They only gave it a 5% chance of being true.

Receiving such distressing news without knowing if the cancer had spread was a

tremendous emotional burden for Yolanda. The lack of control over her own body and the fear of the unknown weighed heavily on her heart Attempting to conceal her emotions, Yolanda confided in her partner, Greyan, who provided unwavering support throughout this tumultuous period. They embarked on a journey of resilience together, attending doctors’ appointments side by side, and Greyan took on additional responsibilities at home to ease Yolanda's burden after surgery Though emotional turbulence gripped their lives, they faced the challenges head-on, determined to overcome the obstacles that lay before them.

Mental and emotional well-being are often overlooked in the fast-paced world of social media influencing When faced with the daunting news of their cancer diagnosis, Yolanda recognized the importance of prioritizing self-care above all else. Feeling mentally drained and emotionally unstable, Yolanda made the difficult decision to step back from their career in order to focus on herself and her children. Understanding that her own happiness and well-being would ultimately impact her children's lives, she dedicated herself to a journey of healing and self-discovery.

Putting her mental and physical health first, Yolanda embarked on a path of self-care. Regular visits to the gym and attentive listening to her body's needs became paramount Recognizing the signs of fatigue and avoiding overexertion became crucial in their recovery process. Though the decision to halt filming was not an easy one, Yolanda realized that pushing through the challenges only intensified her

unhappiness. Taking a break allowed her to regain control of her life and happiness. While Yolanda dreams of returning to Instagram and Youtube one day, her current focus is on personal growth and well-being

The post-surgery period brought its own set of challenges and triumphs. Through the help of specialized vitamins and a diligent care routine, Yolanda experienced significant improvements. Tiredness and headaches diminished, and the joy of witnessing her hair regrowth brought a renewed sense of hope Although one lingering effect remains – when Yolanda speaks for prolonged periods, her voice grows weak – this serves as a reminder of the strength she cultivated through her journey.

While some may associate such trials with depression, Yolanda found solace in the distraction provided by their children Despite battling anxiety, her love for her kids and the responsibility they carried prevented her from falling into a state of depression. It is through these challenges that Yolanda learned the value of seeking support, maintaining open lines of communication, and embracing the strength found in the presence of loved ones

Life has a way of revealing our true desires when faced with adversity. The dream of leaving their home in Curaçao and pursuing a new path became a clear vision for Yolanda and Greyan. Understanding the fragility of life, they recognized the urgency to seize their dreams However, unforeseen circumstances altered their plans, and while her partner, Greyan, embarked on a professional opportunity in Los Angeles, Yolanda remains in Curaçao, awaiting the necessary visas for themselves and their children. Though separated by distance, their strong foundation of understanding and effective communication allows them

to navigate this challenge together.

Having gone through the trials and tribulations that life presented, Yolanda now sees the world through a different lens. A newfound appreciation for life's blessings and the ability to pursue her passions with greater determination emerged from her experiences. Gratitude for the people around her and a commitment to living in the present moment have become guiding principles In Yolanda's eyes, life is too short to be taken for granted, and every opportunity should be pursued with passion and unwavering dedication.

To the readers who may be facing similar circumstances, Yolanda offers a message of resilience and positivity. Encouraging others to take advantage of available resources, such as insurance coverage to take yearly exams, Yolanda highlights the importance not giving up and looking forward to better days.

Jo Anne Bakhuis Da Costa Gomez Every day is a good day

Jo-Anne Bakhuis - Da Costa Gomez is a well-known television personality in Curaçao.

From a young age on, Jo-Anne has always been very curious and eager to learn about everything around her. She has a genuine interest in people. It is, therefore, no surprise that she eventually ended up in journalism, even though she never considered this field of work in her teenage years. According to Jo-Anne, during her formative years there was no diversity in terms of options for careers; however, her interest always pointed out she was destined for the media industry. After almost a decade of working at media companies, among other companies, she is now engaged in independent communication projects which is easier to combine with her latest role, namely being a mother, which did not come easy. Jo-Anne had been very vocal about her struggles to get pregnant and the taboo on this topic. She strives for women and men to feel supported regarding this topic and GOSA is eager to share her story to help her achieve this beautiful goal.

In 2018, you and Camillo got married. GOSA can notice that you guys have a beautiful, loving relationship. Tell us more about it. My husband and I have consciously chosen to put our relationship first. Marriage, just like life itself, is not a bed of roses. You have to nurture your relationship every day. One of my favorite things about our relationship is that there is no power play. We respect each other and give each other the space to grow individually and professionally. We both understand when the other is working long hours, and we support each other in all our new ventures. But at the end of the day, we make sure to make time to share our experiences, talk about our day and plan our quality time. Even now, we went on a date the first week after giving birth. Communication is key, but only happy satisfied individuals can create a balanced and happy relationship.

-

It also really helps that I married a man who likes communication just as much as I do. There is no guessing game when people know how to put their feelings and thoughts into words. This creates a safe space to communicate and navigate between the good and the bad days. We are not perfect, but we validate each other's feelings and thoughts. After almost a decade of being together, that is the foundation of our loving relationship.

Did you always have the desire to expand your family?

I grew up in a stable home where my parents, even now after 50 years, provide an example of a positive trusting relationship. I wanted to provide a stable environment in which my children could flourish. I saw the value of quality over quantity and was never focused on getting married young. Just like them, my husband and I got married after 30 and were both at an age where we knew exactly what we wanted and wholeheartedly agreed on the values we wanted to build a family on. So we went for it. A loving and solid relationship, marriage and then expand our family.

When did you start thinking about other methods to realize the wish to become parents?

We got pregnant right after our honeymoon but lost the baby early in the pregnancy. It traumatized me for a while, even making me wonder if I wanted to expose us to possibly living through a miscarriage again. After a year, we decided to be more proactive and that’s when the tests started and the uncertainties became more and more. Along the way came covid, which also slowed down our process. At that point in 2020, it was clear that we would need fertility treatments which would come at a high cost, both physically and emotionally.

What did this do to you guys as a couple, and what advice do you have for other couples going through fertility treatments?

What did this do to you guys as a couple, have for other couples going through fertility treatments?

You’re dealing with your own emotions, the emotions of your partner, uncertainty about the treatment, the financial burden, impact of the medication on your body, just to name a few. The stress level of people going through this process is known to be very high. Women and men alike. It is also wellknown that lots of couples end up splitting up under this pressure cooker. What helped us through it all was our commitment to being kind to each other and our willingness to work on our relationship. You can’t be mean to each other, disrespect each other’s experience through such a tribulation and expect to come out unscathed. We both knew this and worked on ourselves individually and did couples communication therapy. It allowed us to create and maintain a safe space to communicate and validate each other through the process. In certain ways, it broke us to build us back up stronger and even better. I would advise any couple going through fertility issues to get therapy beforehand. Not therapy to just discuss problems, but therapy to learn to communicate and create that space to stay connected and practice kindness. It keeps you sane because this process is heavy.

a future that might never be. In this process you either learn to let go of what you can’t control, or you hurt yourself by desperately holding on to a desire. The desire being a certain picture of what life should be like. I learnt to live for purpose instead. A purpose can be achieved in different ways. When motherhood became a purpose I could achieve through ways other than giving birth I felt free and found a state of happiness in every day. Every day is a good day!.

What is the difference between IUI and IVF, and can you tell us about your journey with it?

What is the difference between IUI and IVF, and can you tell us about your journey with it?

How did you deal with emotions and disappointments?

How did you deal with emotions and disappointments?

By finding joy in the smallest things. Quality of life depends on the quality of your thoughts. I chose to swim in a sea of small moments of gratitude instead of drowning in sorrow. I also refused to let moments of disappointment make me bitter. Be happy for other people’s success, practice kindness and focus on the blessings in your life. Do not dwell on the past nor create anxiety about

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is when sperm is placed directly into the uterus using a speculum. Through In-vitro fertilization (IVF), eggs are surgically removed using a needle that goes through the back of the vagina, and those eggs are fertilized outside of the body. IUI can be done in Curaçao and is simpler. I did 7 rounds; because of COVID-19 we were not able to go to Colombia for IVF right away. Moreover, people who undergo IVF have no guarantee of success either. The treatment is expensive as well as physically and emotionally draining. It took us a few rounds to have our baby. I realize all too well, despite our very challenging circumstances, how lucky we are to have our Jane today. Having lived through these sacrifices keeps me very grateful and humble. I think of all those going through it and send my prayers.

Looking back at what you went through, is there something beautiful coming out of it?

use both to have a positive impact on the life of others.

At what moment did you feel that this pregnancy was the right one,

At what moment did you feel that this pregnancy was the right one, and how was that journey?

I saw her in my dreams the night before our pregnancy result. People might believe me, or they might not, but I truly did. During the process, I would always dream of having a son until the 24th of August 2022. I saw her. More than just the chubby cheeks, black hair, grey eyes and fair skin, the whole complexion. A calling, a blessing or mom's intuition. Call it what you like. I dreamt of her, and I knew I’d hold her in my arms. My pregnancy was not easy either. I had different complications and could not really enjoy my pregnancy. But in my heart, I knew it would be okay, because of that dream I had more than faith.

sense of empowerment through sisterhood and therapy. Fertility challenges often take a lot of sacrifices to overcome. Ask yourself on a regular basis if the end will justify the means.

I'd say set boundaries as it’s very important to protect your mental health and everything else you hold dear. Like your marriage for example. Hopefully there is a turning point at which you are able to put everything into perspective.

What did you feel the moment you held baby Jane for the first time in your arms?

What did you feel the moment you held baby Jane for the first time in your arms?

The first time I held her, I recognized her face. I cried tears of joy. God provides. God is Gracious. That’s also the meaning of the name; Jane.

Don’t let the journey define you, but let it rather be a guiding force into growth. Also be kind to yourself as it will help you rise above your own struggles and find joy on a daily. It will mostly be the small things that make the difference. The bad moments may feel like you're constantly diving into the deep end, but with the right focus it will be the feelings of compassion and humbleness that rise back up to the surface. A bad moment doesn’t make a bad day. In every day there is good to find when one is able to live in the light of gratitude. All which is why at the end of the day, every day is a good day.

How is it going through the new phase as a mom?

I am very happy. It's crazy how you can adjust and adapt. I am so grateful for having my daughter. I don’t complain one bit about anything hahaha. Sleepless nights, endless hours of feeding, bring it on. Haha I truly enjoy the process and remain every bit humbled by it. My prayers have a deeper level of intensity now that she’s here.

I am currently in the process of establishing a foundation. My goal is to start a foundation that supports individual and couples facing similar situations. My dream is to assist at least one couple who lacks the financial resources to undergo IVF over a specific period of time.
