CLAY COLLECTIVE COMMUNITY CENTER

SPRING 2021

INSTRUCTOR: MELISSA SHIN

4 Gabriela Gonzalez PEDESTAL 4/19/21
Designed for the Oakwood neighborhood of Venice, California, a new community center opens with a ceramics studio to engage the community in the arts.
6
The space is programatically arranged to maximize ventilation in fabrication spaces and utlizes glass facades to emphasize the importance of transparency in a community.
7

Runners pass by the building, watching their neighbors throw on the wheel. Retirees leaving their language class see their neighbors rehearsing ballroom dance. Office administrators can see children playing in the park from their offices. Large studio spaces allow the community to come together and enjoy time with their family and neighbors.

JAZZ ON THE LAWN

CO-OP HOUSING COMPLEX

FALL 2020

INSTRUCTOR: YO-ICHIRO HAKAMORI

10

Inspired by the historical presence and cultural significance of jazz in Leimert Park, Jazz on the Lawn attracts musicians by providing them with a performance venue located at the heart of a housing complex. 1-3 bedroom apartments shelter musicians and give them a box seat to every show.

11

Following the limited equity co-operative model, the complex provides affordable long-term rental units, reacts to tenants and owners of diverse cultural and demographic backgrounds, offers respective variety, openness, and incorporates functions that serve the community beyond housing. Building systems follow sustainable strategies to reduce energy consumption.

12
13

Underneath the lawn are 6 practice rooms, available for musicians to rehearse without disturbing neighbors. Above the housing units lies a lush layer of grass, where residents and visitors can sunbathe while enjoying some Friday afternoon jazz or look at the stars whilst Saturday night blues play.

A social justice center in Chinatown designed to promote healthy living, pushing and pulling vistors through the outdoor corridors and floating walkways connecting the building through the voids. A long, rectangular massing was perforated, allowing northern winds to flow through and provide natural ventilation.

17

The facade design can be divided into three parts: a curtain wall with single-sided ventitaltion, a translucent polycarbonate envelope that serves as a rainscreen and provides shade, and an aluminum trellis screen for vining plants. Suspended walkways allow users to breathe-in fresh air while traveling from office to office. A diagram of energy strategies employed in the average room demonstrates the buiding’s preparedness for year round weather-changes.

CONCRETE JUNGLE

LIBRARY AND NURSERY

SPRING 2020

INSTRUCTOR: SCOTT URIU

20

Part one transforms an isolated part of a West Los Angeles warehouse into a nursery assembled with wood arranged in rhythmic variations. The neatly fitted ground level constrasts the chaos of the jungle gym above. Inspired by the materiality of the L.A. School, the use of typical and readily available materials are used in an untraditional way.

21

Part two takes the study and develops the full warehouse into a cross-programmatic building featuring a nursery and library. Winding paths to navigate through work spaces lead students towards tree house classrooms towering over the library program. Light showers from above through the rhythmic arrangement of beams. Cold pre-existing concrete is combined with warm tones of wood to add color and texture while contrasting light and heavy.

Agricultural processing occurs at the center of the site, split into two parts by the main road. Those en-route to their vacation residences pass through greenhouses, fields of prickly pear, sheep pens, and a conservatory. With bee farming to maintain the native plants pollinated, goat herding for maintaining the grounds trimmed, and a composting center to maintain the production of soil, the resort is designed to be self-sufficient.
