CEO News from the

December means that summer is here, school and varsity exams are almost finished, most businesses in Gauteng are closing and our members are busy packing for their holiday trip, enjoying a break around a braai or kids writing letters to Santa Clause.

In this edition, we would like to share the different clubs within the Country Club and how you can be part of the community. In spite of COVID-19, Silver Lakes can be proud of what has been achieved this year and the foundation has been laid for a successful 2021. Our members all deserve a well-earned holiday and we trust that the time with your loved ones will be special. At the same time, we salute the staff that need to ensure that all services continue

uninterrupted at Silver Lakes, specifically our Security staff and some operational staff who will be on duty on Christmas and New Year. Wishing you a joyous Christmas and blessings in the coming New Year.

CLUB Join the Athletics Walkers and runners of all ages get together weekly on a Monday to do a 2km, 4km or 5km route. Going forward, we have decided to have one time trial per month, being on the first Monday of each month, starting February 2021 when reminders will be sent to all residents.

Book club The book club has not gained momentum as we had hoped for, and we invite residents who are interested in being part of the book club to get in contact with Daleen at the Clubhouse.

Join one of these clubs at the Silver Lakes Country Club and become part of a fun community. Book exchange club

Business forum

The book exchange club started in 2020 and due to the valuable contributions by our residents, we have in excess of a thousand books already. You are welcome to drop books you no longer need, which books will be rotated with other books in the lounge area. In need for a book? Just bring any book you have at home and exchange it for a book on the shelve which will then be yours. No fees. No time period to bring it back. No registers. Just bring and exchange and enjoy the reading!

Our quarterly meetings were put on hold due to the COVID-19 implications and will commence again at the end of January 2021 with Mr Dawie Roodt addressing our residents over a meal and glass of wine. The subject will be announced in January 2021 when bookings open. Our business expo will continue hand-in-hand with the business forum where you will have the opportunity to showcase your business before the business expo at a nominal fee.

Bridge club

Chess club

Due to the challenges with COVID-19, the bridge club suspended their get-togethers and will commence again in 2021 when announced. We are eagerly looking for somebody with knowledge of the game to teach interested residents how to play. If you can be of assistance, please contact Daleen at the Clubhouse.

The Silver Lakes Chess Club is an affiliated chess club, meeting once a week in the Parkview Room (Chapel). Chess players of all ages and different levels take on one another under the guidance of a coach.

PEDESTRIAN ENTRANCE AT THE SOLOMON MAHLANGU GATE The pedestrian entrance is now complete. The scope of work at the pedestrian gate was to remove the palisade fence and replacing it with ClearVu, this at the same time ‘’softened’’ the look and feel. As part of the ‘’upgrade’’ an automated bicycle sliding gate was installed making access more user friendly. The project in itself was not very time consuming, the real challenge was removing and erecting the new fence with all the pedestrian movement through the gate, but as they say all is well that ends well.

GABION PROJECT IN THE GAME RESERVE This project will entail the installation of ± 260m of gabion baskets and rock, double stacking will mean that we are in affect only covering a distance of ± 130m. The contractors are confident that the project can be completed by the time that the Estate closes for the builder’s holiday on 15 December 2020. This project comes with its own set of challenges in that getting material to the workplace (embankment) as the material is stored, with permission from the owner on a vacant stand close by and secondly the possibility of rising water levels during the rainy season.

SILVERLAKES LADIES GOLF Every year the Ladies Golf division choses a charity to donate to as part of their year-end initiatives. This initiative is driven in collaboration with Residents who delivered their donations to the Club house by 7 December 2020. These donations of dog’ and cat’ food, blankets etc. would later be handed over to the relevant charity. Woolies Animal Shelter is the recipient of this year’s Charity Drive.
