Anesthesia/Pain Management Innovative Chemotype Could Transform Anesthetic Use n innovative screening process has discovered two completely new potential anesthetics that may be safer than current drugs. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, USA; www.upenn.edu) screened a 350,000 compound library, searching for compounds that compete with 1-aminoanthracene–apoferritin binding targets.

Compounds that interacted strongly with apoferritin, and those with the most promising structures were selected for further animal testing. Based on a strong presence in both the initial and secondary screens, two compounds based on 6-phenylpyridazin-3(2H) were found to be effective as anesthetics in mice. Until now, no new anesthetic classes had been developed since the 1970s. The study was published in the February 2015 issue of Anesthesiology.

Smokers Require More Anesthetic During Operations new study reveals that both smokers and those exposed to passive smoke require more anesthetic and painkillers to reach the same level of anesthesia as nonsmokers. Researchers at Bezmialem Vakif University (Istanbul, Turkey; www.bezmialem.edu.tr) conducted a study to investigate whether there is a difference between smokers, passive smokers, and nonsmokers, in terms of intraoperative anesthetic and painkiller consumption, as confirmed by the nicotine metabolite serum cotinine in 90 women. amount of propofol used for induction of anesthesia in was 38% higher in smokers than non-smokers, and 17% higher than in passive smokers. The study was presented at the annual Euroanaesthesia meeting, held in Berlin (Germany) during May-June 2015.

Developed at the Academic Medical Center (AMC; Amsterdam, The Netherlands; www.amc.nl) and GlaxoSmithKline (Brentford, UK; www.gsk. com), the implant is a small neurostimulation device implanted under the skin that sends electrical signals to electrodes surgically inserted into the neck adjacent to the vagus nerve. According to the researchers, the stimulation results in activation of acetylcholine receptor type 7 (α7nAChR) in the spleen, which is involved in the cholinergic antiinflammatory pathway (CAP).

Implantable Ion Pump Helps Body Alleviate Pain new study describes an innovative organic electronic ion pump that can impede pain impulses by using the body’s own neurotransmitter signals. Developed by researchers at Linköping University (LiU; Sweden; www.liu.se) and the Karolinska Institutet (KI; Solna, Sweden; www.ki.se) the small ion pump consists of an electronically and ionically conducting polymer electrode inside a fluid reservoir containing the drugs, and an ionically conducting delivery channel leading out to the target region, such as the spinal cord. When a voltage is applied between the internal and external counter electrodes, the substances are electrophoretically transported out of the reservoir. The study describing the system was published in the May 2015 issue of Science Advances.

The Rox Coupler, a product of Rox Medical (San Clemente, CA, USA; www.roxmedical.com), is a small, paperclip sized implant which is inserted between the artery and vein in the upper thigh, creating a partial anastomosis. Researchers at Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL; United Kingdom; www. qmul.ac.uk) and other institutions conducted a study that showed that 44 patients who received the Rox Coupler experienced a significant (26.9%) and durable reduction in blood pressure, as well as a reduced number of hypertensive complications and hospital admissions for high blood pressure crises. The study was published on January 22, 2015, in the Lancet.

Ultrasound Tools Provides Confidence in Cardiac Care new anatomically intelligent ultrasound (AIUS) tool brings advanced quantification, automated 3D views, and robust reproducibility to echocardiology. The Royal Philips (Amsterdam, The Netherlands; www.philips.com) HeartModelA.I. is designed to automatically detect, segment, and quantify left atrium and left ventricle volume (LV), and ejection fraction. The model-based segmentation algorithm is based on prior knowledge of the heart, which enables the HeartModelA.I. to detect two LV endocardial borders, at end-diastole and end-systole. By segmenting the extent of myocardial tissue, an intermediate location can be robustly defined across a wide range of heart shapes 3-6 times faster than current methods, which rely on assumptions about the 3D shape of the heart based only on what is seen in the 2-D image, an assumption that can significantly impact the measurements.

Cardiac Plug Lowers Risk of Stroke in Atrial Fibrillation he Amplatzer Cardiac Plug (ACP), a product of St. Jude Medical (SJM; St. Paul, MN, USA; www.sjm.com), is a self-expanding, braided Nitinol mesh that blocks the left atrial appendage (LAA), thus minimizing formation of dangerous blood clots that can migrate into the bloodstream. The device is offered in eight sizes to accommodate varying anatomies, and is preloaded into a catheter for streamlining device delivery. A study by researchers at AHEPA University Hospital Thessaloniki (AHEPA; Greece; www.ahepahosp.gr) showed that compared with an expected annual stroke risk of 5.62% a year, patients who got an ACP implant had a stroke risk of 2.30%, a decrease of 59%. The study was presented at the TCT annual meeting, held during October 2015 in San Francisco (CA, USA).

Nurse Work Environment Affects Cardiac Arrest Survival igher nurse staffing levels and better working conditions have a direct relationship to in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) patient survival, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing (Philadelphia, USA; www.nursing.upenn.edu). The study showed that only 15% of the patients with IHCA survived to hospital discharge after the event. Most of the IHCAs occurred in an intensive care unit (ICU), and 80%

Annual Review 2015 were witnessed; 88% of patients were monitored when their arrest occurred. The researchers hypothesized that too many patients that needed managing on a ward interfered with the nurses’ ability to effectively monitor each patient closely and intervene with lifesaving efforts quickly when every second counts. The study was published in the January 2016 issue of Medical Care.

Emergency Medicine Rapid POC Diagnosis Of Infectious Diseases he OJ Bio system, a product of OJ Bio (Newcastle, UK; www.oj-bio.com), is a handheld diagnosis system that quickly identifies the presence of a range of disease biomarkers at the point of care (POC). The system is based on surface acoustic wave (SAW) electronic chips coated with disease-specific, state-of-art biosensors. To use the system, a biological sample, such as serum, urine, saliva, or blood, is collected and applied to the multichannel biochip and placed into a disposable cartridge. When slid into a specialist reading device, specific disease antigens causes a shift in the phase angle of the SAW passing across the chip surface, providing an unequivocal pass-or-fail result for the particular disease being tested. Bluetooth connection enables the results to be displayed within seconds on a mobile phone app, a PC, or the device itself.

Early Warning System Detects Internal Bleeding novel system promotes vascular catheterization safety by alerting physicians to bleeding complications during interventional procedures.

The Saranas Observer System (SOS) is comprised of a standard cardiac sheath that is surrounded by an array of electrodes that measure the difference in electrical resistance across a blood vessel. If the blood vessel is punctured, blood begins to accumulate outside of it, causing a change in electrical resistance that can be detected in real time. The system is designed for medical procedures requiring access to a blood vessel, such as transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVRs), where the femoral artery is used to gain access to the heart. The SOS is a product of Saranas (Houston, TX, USA: www.saranas.com).

Portable Sensor Rapidly Determines Extent of Eye Injury new biosensor works by measuring ascorbic acid (AA; vitamin C) levels in fluids that coat the eye. Developed at the University of Illinois (Champaign, IL, USA; http://illinois.edu), the OcuCheck Biosensor takes advantage of the fact that the ocular tear film, the viscous fluid that coats the eyeball, contains low levels of AA, while the interior of the eye contains much higher levels. The device uses graphene platelets layered 1 nm thick on filter paper. The upper layers include a unique polymer that interacts with the graphene, gold electrodes, and ascorbate oxidase, which binds to AA,

generating an electrical current that can be measured. The OcuCheck Biosensor could speed efforts to determine extent of eye injury at locations such as accident sites, rural areas lacking ophthalmology specialists, and battlefields.

Infection Control Slippery Surface Technology Repels Bacterial Biofilm novel lubricant-infused slippery polymer could serve as a long lasting, self-replenishing solution to repel deadly bacterial build-up in medical devices. Developed by esearchers at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA, USA; www.harvard. edu), the new non-fouling medical materials are based on oil-infused polydimethylsiloxane (iPDMS), a nontoxic silicone oil that creates a stable, extremely slippery interface with exceptionally low bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation.

According to the researchers, iPDMS can be applied as a coating on other polymers or prepared by simply immersing silicone tubing in silicone oil, and are compatible with traditional sterilization methods. The study describing iPDMS was published in the January 2015 inaugural issue of ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering.

Photoactive Dye Could Prevent Surgical Infection novel antimicrobial dye activated by light could help prevent bacteria from growing on bone fragments used in reconstructive surgery.

Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University (Philadelphia, PA, USA; www.jefferson.edu) treated bone chips with 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis-(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin) (TAPP), a green dye that is stable while in the dark. When illuminated, TAPP becomes active, producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) that rapidly kill bacteria. The dye porphyrins also adhere strongly to bone allograft, without any trace of leaching out, and bacteria are unable to sequester TAPP from the allograft. The strong adherence also suggests that it could be safe and non-toxic to normal tissue. The study was published online on April 17, 2015, in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.

Hospital Laundry Procedures Important in Infection Control roper laundry processes for healthcare textiles (HCTs) are imperative for achieving and maintaining disinfectant quality in fabrics, according to a new review undertaken by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta, GA, USA; www.cdc.gov). According to the review, the industrial laundry processes currently in use successfully achieve microbial reductions via physical, chemical, and thermal actions. Oxidative laundry additives, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peracetic acid, and acetic acid, can provide extra disinfection options for short wash cycles of HCT or for those laundry situations in which chlorine bleach is not indicated. The review was published online on June 18, 2015, in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

Annual Review 2015 Innovative UV Device Fights Drug-Resistant Bacteria n innovative Ultraviolet C band (UV-C) cleaning device can kill 31 pathogens, including C. difficile and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in just five minutes. The OptimumUV Enlight system, a product of Clorox Healthcare (Grapevine, TX, USA; www.CloroxHealthcare. com), can induce a 4-log reduction of C. difficile spores, and a greater than 5-log reduction of other pathogens such as MRSA, vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), when operated at a distance of up to two meters. The system is designed to supplement manual disinfection using bleach germicides or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) products.

The device also includes an app that allows users to remotely check on UV cycle status, as well as start or stop the device, and upload the data for cloudbased reporting.

Brain Scanning Headband Detects Traumatic Injuries he Cerebrotech Intracranial Fluids Monitor (ICP) is a real-time volumetric integral phase shift (VIPS) spectroscopy monitor that uses radio waves to detect changes in the flow of intracranial fluids. The ICP consists of a headband with multi-

ple integrated antennas that broadcast and receive each other’s signals; the frequency response of the phase angle between a transmitter and receiver antenna represents changes in the electrical properties of tissue resulting from small changes in intracranial fluid flow. The device can distinguish changes in tissue composition and structure in traumatic brain injury (TBI), discriminating between brain edema and hematoma by the changes in electromagnetic tissue properties. Central Venous Line Risks Vary by Insertion Site new study by researchers at Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Caen (France; www. chu-caen.fr), and other institutions reveals that the risk of blood infection or thrombosis is lowest when central line catheters are placed in the subclavian or jugular vein, when compared to the femoral vein.

Intensive Care Early Warning Software Forecasts Deadly Sepsis new study describes how a computer algorithm can be used to predict which patients will develop septic shock. Developed by researchers at Johns Hopkins University (JHU; Baltimore, MD, USA; www.jhu.edu), a targeted real-time early warning score (TREWScore) can identify patients at risk of septic shock based on data from their electronic health record (EHR) a median of 28.2 hours before sepsis onset, with twothirds identified before any sepsis-related organ dysfunction. Accordingly, continuous sampling of data from the EHR and calculation of TREWScore may allow clinicians to identify patients at risk and provide earlier interventions. The study describing the algorithm was published on August 5, 2105, in Science Translational Medicine.

Esophageal Insert Modulates Patient Temperature he esophageal-cooling device (ECD) is a single use, fully enclosed triple lumen system that is inserted into the esophagus to help control a patients’ temperature (by either cooling or warming them) during clinical procedures. Two of the lumens attach to standard existing temperature modulation equipment, while a third lumen simultaneously allows gastric decompression and drainage. The ECD, a product of Advanced Cooling Therapy (Chicago, IL, USA; www.advancedcooling therapy.com), can be rapidly inserted, in a fashion similar to a standard orogastric tube, and then uses the esophageal environment as a conduit to control patient temperature in the operating room (OR), recovery room, emergency room, or intensive care unit (ICU).

The researchers stressed, however, that as the overall risk of mechanical, infectious, and thrombotic complications was similar among the three insertion sites, an ideal site for central venous catheter insertion does not in fact exist. The study was published on September 24, 2015, in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

Neonatal Care Home Births Do Not Lead to Increased Risk Of Complications omen with low-risk pregnancies who plan to give birth at home face no increased risk of harm to the baby compared to a planned hospital delivery, according to a new study by researchers at McMaster University (Hamilton, ON, Canada; www.mcmaster.ca) that compared 11,493 planned home births and 11,493 planned hospital births in Ontario, Canada. The results revealed an overall incidence of stillbirth or neonatal death was 1.15 per every 1,000 births in the home birth group, compared with 0.95 in the hospital birth group.

Among the women who planned a home birth, 8% needed emergency medical services, compared to 1.7% of those in the planned hospital group. The study was published on December 21, 2015, in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ).

Blocking Light Improves Premature Babies’ Survival he survival rate of premature neonates born between 26-31 weeks of gestation is improved by blocking light from reaching the parenteral nutrition (PN) feed line, according to a meta-analysis of clinical trials conducted researchers at the University of Mansoura (Egypt; www.mans.edu.eg) and other institutions. Mortality in the light-protected group was half of that in the light-exposed group and twice as high in males compared with females.

According to the researchers, photo-excited vitamins B2 and ‘electron donors’ such as vitamin C, amino acids, and lipids in the multivitamin solution interact, generating oxidants that cause an oxidative stress which damages and kills newborn cells.

Studies show that shielding PN feed lines from light significantly decreases these interactions. The metaanalysis was published on September 16, 2015, in the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

NIFTY Cup Aids Infants Who Cannot Breastfeed he Neonatal Intuitive Feeding TechnologY (NIFTY) cup, developed by PATH (Seattle, WA, USA; www.path.org), is designed to facilitate feeding and prevent starvation in infants in developing countries who are unable to breastfeed. Key features include an extended reservoir off the lip of the cup made of a durable, soft silicone material that holds a small amount of milk, ensuring efficient delivery where the infant is able to pace feeding on

Annual Review 2015 its own. Mothers can directly express their breast milk into the 60-mL cup, reducing possible crosscontamination from other containers. The quickdrying, UV-resistant, silicone cup can be boiled for sterilization, and is ergonomically designed to enhance finger and wrist control over milk flow.

The first prototype of the NIFTY cup was evaluated in Southern India with infants that had clefts or were born prematurely.

New Research Dying Patients’ Priorities Differ from Those Of Their Caregivers’ he value people place on various aspects of dying suggest their end-of-life preferences should be made directly, according to a new study by researchers at Duke University (Durham, NC, USA; www.duke.edu). Electronic Pill Helps Combat Obesity Eating Disorders A prototype remotely controlled electronic capsule adapted for ingestion or placement into the gastrointestinal tract delivers electrical stimulation to the muscles of the stomach wall, giving the patient a feeling of satiety and reducing their urge for food intake. The capsule is first swallowed by the patient; upon arrival into the stomach, it absorbs stomach fluids, increasing its size. A magnetic coupling system is then used to position it in the specific spot selected within the stomach, close to the lower esophagus sphincter (LES) or the vagus nerve. The pill then unfurls an electronic mesh to deliver gastric electrical muscle stimulation or vagus nerve blocking. Developed by researchers at Texas A&M University (TAMU; College Station, TX, USA; www.tamu.edu), the system is essentially a small, handheld reflectance confocal laser endomicroscope that detects natural fluorescence emissions from three molecules present in epithelial tissue: collagen, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). Collagen has a stronger signal in normal and benign tissue, but in cancerous or precancerous tissue the collagen signals weaken, and NADH and FAD signals increase. Since the system detects the natural fluorescence spectrum and lifetime of the molecules, there is no need to use any external contrast agent.

Novel Coil Helps Surgeons Track Tumor Site n implantable, bioabsorbable 3-D coil with minute surgical markers helps physicians track a tumor site after lumpectomy. The BioZorb device, a product of Focal Therapeutics (Aliso Viejo, CA, USA; http://focalrx.com), contains six tiny titanium clips, distributed in a 3-D pattern inside the openspiral coil. The body eventually reabsorbs the coil, leaving the titanium clips for long-term visualization of the surgery site, and enables the radiation oncologist to treat only the smallest possible target area with radiation therapy, resulting in less radiation damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The design allows for suture placement in and around the tumor excision site, and enables oncoplastic closure of the site for partial breast reconstruction.

n image-guided, intranasal sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) nerve block could provide ongoing relief to migraine patients. Developed at Albany Medical Center (AMC; NY, USA; www.amc.edu), the procedure involves inserting a catheter through the nasal passages and toward the rear of the nasal cavity. A drip of 4% lidocaine solution is then absorbed through the bone and into the SPG, anesthetizing the ganglion and blocking neurotransmission. In a study of the technique, patient’s migraine scores were cut in half the day after the SPG block; 30 days after the procedure, patients reported an average 36% decrease. A majority of the patients said they required less or no migraine medication for ongoing relief. The study was presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology annual scientific meeting, held during March 2015 in Atlanta (GA, USA).

Mammography New Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations Released by IARC report released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC; Lyon, France; www.iarc.fr/) recommends inclusion of older patients in screening programs, suggesting there are only limited benefits to screening women aged 40–49, while benefits to screening women aged 50–74 are clearer. The researchers cite the results of studies in 16 countries that show a significantly lower risk for women above the age of 50, as the estimated false positive risk for women who got 10 screening mammograms between age 50 and 70 was 20%. For women aged between 40 and 49, the evidence was limited, and screening recommendations were less clear. The report and the recommendation were published in the June 3, 2015, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM),

Rapid and Automated System Analyzes Kidney Stones

Safer and More Accurate, Breast Screening Technique Developed

new imaging system for rapid analysis of urinary stones immediately after the surgical procedure can help determine appropriate postoperative care. Developed by researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques (IPM; Freiburg, Germany; www.ipm. fraunhofer.de) and industrial partners, the Raman spectroscopy diagnostic system works by illuminating a kidney stone sample with a laser, identifying a singular characteristic wave spectrum via the 1% of photons reflected back. The wave spectrum is compared to a spectral database that contains data on the nine pure substances that make up 99% of urinary stones. Since the device employs relatively inexpensive optical components, it can also work on wet, unprepared samples, substantially reducing the time taken to prepare specimens.

clinical prototype of a new Ultrasound Computed Tomography (UCT) breast screening technique being developed by the UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL; Teddington, Middlesex, UK; www.npl.co.uk), and other institutions could provide more comfortable experience than current multistage screening techniques involving X-ray mammography, a clinical examination, further Xrays, and ultrasound. The procedure involves passing ultrasound waves through the breast while the breast is in a warm water bath. The ultrasound system, which uses large-area pyro-electric sensors, is rotated around the breast during the exam, resulting in a 3-D image of breast tissue with fewer image artifacts than existing detectors. Annual Review 2015 Menopausal Status Should Guide Mammography Intervals new study by researchers at the University of California Davis (UCD; USA; www.ucdavis. edu), and other institutions suggests that menopause may be a more important indicator than age when determining breast cancer (BC) screening intervals. A prospective cohort study showed that among women taking postmenopausal hormonal therapy (HT), biennial screeners had a higher proportion of tumors with less favorable prognostic characteristics than annual screeners. According to the researchers, if screening guidelines were based on menopausal status rather than age, some women aged 40-54 years might be recommended for more frequent screening, while others would need less frequent screening. The study was published on October 20, 2015, in JAMA Oncology.

The technique is designed to detect sugar molecules shed by the outer membranes of cancerous cells. Developed by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH; Charlestown, MA, USA; www. nmr.mgh.harvard.edu), the new technique uses a probe created by attaching a copper-64 radionuclide to a peptide. The peptide in the probe binds to the protein fibrin, found in blood clots. The radionuclide in the probe can thus be detected anywhere in a patient’s body using a single PET scan. The researchers expect that it could take up to five more years of research before the new technique is ready for routine clinical screening. The technique was presented at the 250th National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Positron Emission Tomography Reveals Vascular Microcalcifications

new study by researchers at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom; www.cam.ac.

uk) reveals how a combination of positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) can identify calcified deposits in the vasculature. Using a radiotracer version of sodium fluoride (18F-NaF), the researchers succeeded in showing that sodium fluoride adsorbs to calcified deposits within atherosclerotic plaque with high affinity, and is selective and specific. Since the rate of calcification is a surrogate measure for atherosclerosis progression, noninvasive detection of calcium using PET/CT imaging could serve as a useful risk stratification tool, and could even help distinguish between areas of macro- and micro-calcification in active unstable atherosclerosis. The study was published on July 7, 2015, in Nature Communications.

Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging Technique Helps Safer and More Effective Removal of Brain Tumors esearchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (Baltimore, MD, USA; www. hopkinsradiology.org), have demonstrated that optical coherence tomography (OCT) could enable neurosurgeons to better differentiate between healthy and cancerous brain tissue and perform safer and more effective neurosurgery procedures. The researchers used OCT visible light echolocation to produce a color-coded map of a patient’s brain that can reveal cancerous regions, since cancer cells in the brain lack the myelin sheaths found in healthy brain cells.

Unlike X-ray, Computed Tomography (CT) scans or Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans, OCT is safer for patients because it has no ionizing radiation. A summary of the research was published in the June 17, 2015, issue of Science Translational Medicine.

Researchers at Washington University (WUSTL; St. Louis, MO, USA; www.wustl.edu) combined high-resolution PAT with a BphP1, a reversibly switchable phytochrome that has the ability to differentiate between red and near-infrared (NIR) light-absorption states. The researchers took images of the modified cancerous tissue using the two types of light and compared them to get a highly sensitive, high-resolution image of the cancer cells with substantially decreased background signals, enhanced detection sensitivity, increased penetration depth, and improved spatial resolution. The study describing the new technique was published on November 9, 2015, in Nature Methods.

Annual Review 2015 Radiology Dissolvable Surgical Clip Improves Diagnostic Imaging safe surgical clip developed by researchers at Kobe University (Japan; www.kobe-u.ac.jp), could reduce postoperative complication rates and minimize problems associated with diagnostic imaging. The 5-mm dissolvable surgical clip is made of a magnesium alloy that dissolves and is absorbed by the body after a certain period of time.

To evaluate the functionality of the clip, it was tested in a rat model in which the biliary duct, portal vein, hepatic artery, and hepatic vein were occluded with the clip and a partial liver was removed.

During a monitoring period of eight weeks, the clip functioned properly, and micro CT scanning revealed that the quality of images was not degraded, in comparison to titanium surgical clips, which lead to diminished quality of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images around the wound area, and can potentially cause complications.

novel spacer that separates the rectum from the prostate during radiotherapy (RT) can potentially reduce the risk of adjacent organ-at-risk (OAR) injury. The SpaceOAR system, a product of Augmenix (Waltham, MA, USA; www.augmenix. com), is a temporary injectable gel that protects the rectum in men undergoing RT for prostate cancer.

The hydrogel, which is created from a mixture of two separate syringes, is injected through the perineum, guided by transrectal ultrasound. The material flows into the space between the prostate and the rectum and expands within ten seconds, reducing rectum radiation during prostate RT. The hydrogel is liquefied and absorbed within three months, leaving nothing behind. Shielding the rectum from radiation also permits dose escalation and hypo-fractionation, resulting in more prostate radiation, improved cancer kill rates, and fewer RT sessions.
