Upper School Maths

During these interesting times, the maths department has continued to deliver exciting and thoughtprovoking lessons, albeit from a distance. The girls in the Upper School have been able to use a wide variety of online resources to support their learning. Atom Learning provided learning opportunities and extension for the Year Four and Year Five girls; Doodle Maths continued to be a daily staple reinforcing the notion of “little and often” and Seesaw allowed a conversation to continue between staff and students to ensure that the girls were getting the very best out of all we had to offer.

The Year Five Girls also started using Microsoft Teams to communicate their ideas, this cementing the links between maths and ICT.

Lockdown did not mean that the fun was removed from the learning process and the girls were able to carry out investigations to show application of what they had learned in topic areas.

Year Four students have undertaken to investigate more and develop an independent approach to mathematical thinking. One day a week has been given over to this, with great effect. The final few maths lessons of the year offered an opportunity to put all logic and calculation skills together to solve some truly baffling mathematical mysteries. Great fun was had by all!

Year Five have had a series of puzzles to solve on Seesaw, they have been really challenging and the girls have enjoyed submitting answers. They have also been encouraged to take part in the PuzzleoftheWeek.com competitions, with some Glendower parents also participating – with some great results.

Year Six had great fun looking at Space Maths - a resource provided by NASA, tangram puzzles and working in different bases including binary. They also created their own board games. Once back at school, attention was turned to more visual and practical tasks, and the girls thoroughly enjoyed a study into the aesthetic that maths can produce and its relationship with nature. Girls created videos about Fibonacci and explored the beauty of the Golden Ratio in architecture.
