Clubs

There are more than 60 clubs on offer to Glendower students each term. Most are run by Glendower staff with some run by external companies, but all are thoroughly enjoyed by all students who take part. From sport to creative and performing arts, logic to student voice, there is something on offer for every student. Here are some highlights from a range of clubs that took place during the year. Food Tech has proved to be an extremely popular club again this year. Whilst we don’t have access to an oven or a hob we have been extremely resourceful and ‘baked’ a different treat each week. Some of the delicious dishes have included overnight-oat breakfast pots, fruit kebabs, Christmas canapes, fruity flapjacks, energy balls and raspberry cheesecake. The girls have developed and learnt new skills and there has been much laughter. The highlight has to have been the ‘Rocky Road’ which lots of the teachers also enjoyed the next day! The most hilarious memory has to be the disastrous ‘reindeer cake pops’ which did not want to stick together and ended up a total disaster!

School Council

Every Thursday, we would all join up together in Miss Greenlees’ classroom and we would talk about what we could improve and what we could organise for this year. We really enjoyed these meetings because we also got to make friends with girls from different classes and year groups. We built great new relationships with them.

This year we have organised:

• Christmas Jumper Day where we raised £396.55 for the ‘Save the Children’ charity. Last year, we raised £291.55. Therefore, this year, we managed to raise £105 more. We feel like this is a big achievement because £105 is quite a lot of money! More people participated, and we think this is because we made lots of posters and a display board to encourage people to donate to ‘Save the Children’.

• The School Council Obstacle Course where we raised over £600.00 for Sport Relief! We loved organising this event because it was fun drawing out and planning what the obstacles would look like. We designed the whole thing together! It was quite a big responsibility, collecting so much money, but we still had fun working together to do it. The obstacle course was another big achievement because we raised lots of money and everyone really enjoyed it.

• An animal adoption to support dolphins in the wild. We organised a whole school vote to choose an animal to adopt and support in the wild. We decided to carry out a vote because we thought it would be unfair to choose ourselves. We held a vote in every class and then drew a bar chart to show the whole school the results on our special display board. It was lots of hard work, but the hard work paid off because we received an amazing pack to share with everyone in the library. This included a dolphin toy, some posters and lots of information on how we can help to save dolphins.

The best part of being in School Council is knowing that our classmates relied on us to organise great events and that we could be their voice all together as a team! We also got to visit Mrs Kingsmill-Moore, in her office, for an amazing breakfast and we all told her our ideas and discussed what we had been doing. Mrs Kingmill-Moore was so kind, and she encouraged us with our ideas and let us know which ones she thought would be possible.

The future of Glendower would be great if the next School Council could continue our work on improving the playground, as we had only just got started with this.

School Council Members 2019-2020

As always, it is delightful to run this club with such an enthusiastic group of girls. We have learnt a few songs this year, and the girls are starting to understand some grammatical concepts that are quite challenging! We have moved on from the basics, and we are starting to conjugate some verbs in the present tense. Conjugation bingo was incredibly fun!

We had a few girls joining for the first time, and they were outstanding at catching up. Kahoot has proven to be a great tool at the end of the lessons!

French Drama

Le club de théâtre français!

This year girls from Year Three, Four and Five performed in autumn ‘Le Gruffalo’’. In the spring term they used small puppets to act out ‘Boucle d’Or et les trois ours’ (Goldilocks and the Three Bears). They all work together to rehearse their lines and gather props. A big well done to everyone for two entertaining plays with very good articulation, acting and a great sense of fun !

Art Club

Art club girls provide the stunning visuals to accompany many events throughout the school calendar such as programs for concerts and props for plays. Art competitions are entered regionally and nationally. We have seen successes this year but due to lockdown restrictions the exhibitions have been postponed until next year.

Purple Pages

The Purple Pages newspaper club has been hugely popular ever since it first began six years ago.

It is fantastic to see the girls lead the project to produce a paper that is written and edited by and for the girls! Every issue the girls produce is unique, and our team of editors carefully select articles that they feel are important to us at Glendower. They all work together to collate and edit the final edition and they have a lot of fun in the process.

A big well done to everyone who has contributed to the Purple Pages this year.
