EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Autumn 2021
Page 2
A WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES
W
e are thrilled to be able to offer our extra-curricular programme to Glendower students once again this Autumn. The primary aims of our extra-curricular provisions are to offer breadth of choice to all students and allow them to flourish outside of academics.
Clubs and extra-curricular activities promote a positive mindset and help students increase their confidence and focus, whilst decreasing feelings of anxiety. We encourage all students to take part in an extra-curricular club, whether that be inside or out of school. Based on the parent survey
This programme will provide students with the opportunities to discover and pursue other interests outside of the regular classroom.
sent during the Spring 2021 term, Glendower are pleased to offer so many varying opportunities to students across the school.
The selection of clubs on offer at Glendower include Sports, Art, Drama, Science, School Council, Languages, Music and many others. We are sure every Glendower girl will find something that captures her imagination and sparks a lifelong passion.

THE NEXT STEPS
Please note, some clubs are invitation-only and these students will be have been contacted prior to this list being published. This year, to simplify the booking process and to help families keep track of their daughter’s activities, we will be using School Cloud as a means of signing up and paying for clubs. As you will notice, we have implemented a cost for all internal clubs (excluding boosters and invitation-only sessions). This is due to the wider range of activities on offer this year and the running costs that are associated with many of these clubs. More information can be found regarding the sign-up process and payment information on the opposite page. We do hope you enjoy this term’s programme and the students find something that interests and inspires them. Best wishes Mrs Donna Sweeney and Miss Laura Rodgers Deputy Head Pastoral and Deputy Head Academic
Please ensure you read this booklet carefully. This booklet contains a breakdown of all year groups with details regarding the day, time and location of each club. This information will also be available on the Parent Portal. It is important to note that once your daughter commits to a club, she must attend that club for the entire term, unless there are exceptional circumstances. Clubs are non-refundable once booked, and sessions not attended will still be charged. Please go through this booklet with your daughter to help her decide on clubs she would like to attend.
Page 4
Please read this booklet with your daughter to decide what clubs she would like to attend.
Clubs will be available to book from Friday 3rd September at 19.00. Please do not attempt to book any club prior to this date. Clubs will be booked on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Club booking will close at 19.00 on Friday 17th September. No clubs will be available to book after this time.
Clubs will run from Monday 20th September - Friday 10th December 2021, excluding Half Term.
Clubs are split into two types: internal and external. It is clearly stated in this booklet what club belongs to what category.
Internal
External
Internal clubs are run and organised by Glendower staff.
External clubs are run and organised by external companies that Glendower host in the school building. Glendower are not involved with the running or payment of these clubs.
These clubs will be booked and paid for via School Cloud from Friday 3rd September at 19.00. You can access School Cloud here using your login details recently sent to you by Mr Callaghan. Payment will be made at the time of booking.
Sign-up details are included in this booklet. Usually, you will contact the company and they will advise on payment options. Once registers are finalised, external clubs will pass these onto the Glendower Office who will load these onto your School Cloud account.
All clubs your daughter takes part in will be visible on your School Cloud account including dates, times and locations. Page 5

Nessy Fingers

Thursday, 15.30-16.15, ICT Room
Children will learn how to touch type in a fun and engaging way. Touch typing is a fantastic skill for children to have both now and in the future. The younger they learn the more natural it will become to them. Those who can touch-type produce twice the amount of work as those who “hunt and peck” at the keyboard. Touch typing leads to fluency using a keyboard. When a child has mastered touch typing they will have more time to focus on their ideas when working. With a smaller amount of attention spent on the keyboard children are able to concentrate more fully on their work. It will also improve spelling, as the programme we will use uses real words. Typing also helps children break up words into smaller sounds. This can be very helpful for reading and spelling. Learning touch typing when young can help prepare a child for the more complex writing assignments in higher levels of education. Children who join the club will get a year’s membership to NessyFingers so they can continue their typing practice at home.

SPORT TRIALS
YEAR THREE EXTRA SWIMMING Dear Parents It has been a challenging time for our swimmers, and squad selections have previously been based on performance and times taken during PE lessons from the previous years. However, as swimming has not been possible within PE lessons, selection for the Year Three Extra Swimming group will take place during timetabled swimming lessons during the first half of the Autumn term, with the group sessions beginning in the second half of the Autumn Term. Pupils selected to join Extra Swimming will train at Virgin Active, Fulham pools, on Friday afternoons, 4.30pm-5.30pm, commencing from Friday 5th November. If you believe your daughter may be selected, please avoid signing up for other clubs that run on Friday afternoon as refunds will not be offered for the second half of term. Those interested and hoping for selection will be expected to compete in the three main strokes; Front Crawl, Backstroke and Breaststroke, while Butterfly would be advantageous. Performance and attendance at Extra Swimming are monitored closely, and NO swimming place is guaranteed for the whole academic year nor should any girl give up trying for a place if they do not have one at the beginning of the year. Our Selection Policy can be found on the Parent Portal should you have any queries regarding the selection process. Best of luck to your daughters, and we look forward to seeing them back in the pool in September. Kind regards Mrs Enness-Laporte

YEAR FIVE EXTRA SWIMMING Dear Parents It has been a challenging time for our swimmers as squad selections have previously been based on performance and times taken during PE lessons from the previous years. However, as swimming has not been possible within PE lesson in the past year, we would like to give the opportunity for any girl who would like to join the Extra Swimming and Swim Squad to compete in a time trial during the first full week of the new Autumn Term. If your daughter would like to register for the swimming trials, please register below prior to 17.00 on Thursday 9th September. Further details, including transport to these trials, will be sent once registration has closed. REGISTER HERE - EXTRA SWIMMING TRIALS Trials will take place at Virgin Active, Fulham Pools, on Thursday 16th September at 17.45-18.30. Students selected for Extra Swimming will train on Thursdays at Fulham Pools at 17.45-18.30, commencing from Thursday 23rd September. Please note, swimmers selected for Swimming Squad (Year Four-Year Six) also train on Friday evening at Fulham Pools at 18.30-19.30. SPORT TRIALS
YEAR FIVE AND SIX NETBALL SQUAD Dear Parents This year, we will be running an open trial for Year Five and Six Netball Squad. Due to COVID-19, students have had a long break from playing netball. With many girls performing at a similar level, we have found it difficult to choose a squad of 10 for the Autumn Term. We didn’t feel it was fair to judge girls based on previous performances and we have therefore decided to run trials during the first half of the Autumn Term. At the end of the first half of the Autumn Term, the squad will be reduced to 10 students per year level. If your daughter would like to register for the netball squad trial, please register below prior to 17.00 on Thursday 9th September. Further details, including transport to these trials, will be sent once registration has closed. REGISTER HERE - NETBALL SQUAD TRIALS Trials will take place at Battersea Park on Monday and Friday afternoons from 16.00-17.10, commencing from Monday 13th September and will be led by Mrs Payne, Miss Humble and Mrs Enness-Laporte. Netball Squad is an invitation-only club, open to girls who display potential and aptitude in netball. It is expected that girls selected for the squad will participate in BOTH Monday and Friday sessions. If a girl fails to attend Netball Squad for more than three sessions per term, she risks losing her place to another girl. If you would like your daughter to attend the trials, please avoid signing up for other clubs that run on Monday and Friday afternoons as refunds will not be offered for places not taken up. Please note that selection for Netball Squad does not guarantee your daughter a place in the squad for the rest of her time at Glendower. In line with our PE selection policy (available on the parent portal), selection is always reviewed at the end of each term. Kind regards Mrs Payne

Debating teaches confidence in public speaking, clear thinking, the ability to defend your point of view and a broad understanding of important issues. It is also great fun. This club will introduce Year Five and Six students to all the key skills of debating, and will enable them to develop these skills through frequent debates as part of an internal competition, as well as possibly in debates against other schools. Mr Julian Bell has recently retired from the post of Head of English at Godolphin and Latymer to devote himself full time to his passion for debating.
