Annual Impact Report 2021-2022

Our plans for the next decade

• Foster authentic and mutually respectful relationships that develop kindness and a sense of belonging to a wider community locally.

• Through a transformational bursary programme welcome students from a wide range of backgrounds who contribute positively to the school community.

• Provide the highest quality learning environment and support structures, to facilitate a holistic and balanced education.

Our Mission

Community and a rounded education is central to all that we do at Glendower. Glendower’s vision is to be truly part of its local community for the mutual benefit of all involved; and to make a sustainable and positive difference to the lives of thousands of children, young people and adults both within the Glendower community and in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea area, regardless of people’s social-economic background.

The student body at Glendower is diverse and comes from a wide range of backgrounds. However, in the local area, not everyone has equal access to such opportunity and academic advancement. Our aim is to make an increased contribution to close this gap and ensure that every student at Glendower leaves with the skills, knowledge and attitude to make a positive contribution to the world.

Questions and Answers

When you think back on 2021-2022, what is the first word that comes to mind?

Productive!

What was your favourite memory from 2021-2022?

Opening the doors on the first day of the Autumn Term to witness a sea of happy, expectant faces waiting to rush inside. The sheer joy on a child’s face, excited at the prospect of coming back to school, is something that will never fail to move me!

What is your favourite thing about being part of the Glendower community?

The Glendower community is special. I absolutely love the diversity of our families, which spans so many nations of the world. It is special that all cultures are represented and embraced and that we learn something about each other on a daily basis. There is a sense of family and togetherness and, I think that, because many people are not living in the same country as their immediate family, the Glendower community becomes that family.

What would you like to say to those from the Glendower community who have contributed so generously to Glendower this school year?

Without your generosity, we could not do what we have set out to do with our partnership and development work. Your generous contributions have enabled girls to begin new chapters in their lives, families to gain a sense of belonging, our girls to gain an understanding of the complexities of lives beyond our gates and children to engage in activities that enrich their lives far beyond anything that money could buy. Please don’t stop supporting our partnership and development activities, whether that be with your time, expertise or financially, as we know that your daughters’ lives and the lives of the families beyond our gates will be all the richer for it, and we could not do it without you.

What

are you looking forward to for the future of Glendower

Preparatory School?

There is SO much to look forward to. Firstly, I cannot wait to see the how the new Nursery building, so recently filled with the lively chatter of the Little Glendower girls, helps to develop our girls from an even younger age in readiness for their next steps in education. It is the realisation of a dream long held by our governors and brought to life right on our doorstep! Equally, I cannot wait to see the Immersive Room being fully utilised by the girls as they extend their learning beyond the classroom. I am also excited to turn our attention towards developing the playground with permanent play equipment for the girls to enjoy their leisure time, which we will be fundraising for shortly. We already have two very generous donations for this space, so the dream is inching closer to becoming a reality! And finally, I am looking forward to watching our wonderful Glendower girls grow into excellent ambassadors for our school as they enthral us with their tenacity, thirst for knowledge and determination. What a privilege it is to be the head of this wonderful school!

Warm wishes, Nina Kingsmill Moore

Our Vision

To empower all in our community to reach their full potential by approaching their academic and pastoral endeavours with purpose, resilience, kindness and good humour.

From the Chair of Governors

On behalf of the Glendower Preparatory School Board of Governors I would like to thank you for your continued and generous investment in our students, partnerships and school. It is my pleasure to report that philanthropic support grew to record-setting levels in 2021-2022 with your gifts ensuring that our students, staff and community received unparallel support, opportunities and experiences.

This year, with the recruitment of a Director of Partnerships and Development, the experiences available to our students have

grown immensely. The impact of this funded position and the launch of our partnerships and community programme have reverberated throughout the school and our school community. Additionally, we have this year reviewed our bursary offering and are committed to growing this programme and diversifying our student body for the benefit of all our students, alongside enhancing and updating our facilities.

It’s been an exciting year and I have no doubt that our partnerships with local schools and community groups, as well as commitment to enhancing bursaries and improving our facilities, will provide ever increasing, diverse and exciting opportunities for our students, staff and parents to engage with, learn from and support community locally.

I encourage all of you to read this report and thank you again for helping to make Glendower Preparatory School the incredible place that it is today. If you have not yet chosen to make Glendower part of your philanthropic priority, I invite you to join us, as it is the generosity of this community that will shape Glendower and its students for generations to come.

Thank you, Rupert Harrison

From the GPTA

Fundraising for Glendower School’s bursary fund and the school community’s chosen charities has always been one of the main objectives of the Glendower Parents Association, which has now evolved into the newly created Glendower Parents Teachers Association (GPTA). The GPTA is also proud to have been able to successfully react to current events and set up emergency appeals.

As such, this year after expenditure, we have raised more than £182,000 through our annual Christmas Bazaar, bi-annual Spring Gala and some of our regular bake sales. The funds have been designated to be distributed to Glendower’s 1) Bursary fund and 2) three chosen charities (Honeypot, K&C Foundation and Brompton Fountain), 3) the Ukraine appeal and 4) the local Kensington and Chelsea Afghan refugees.

We are incredibly grateful to the school community for their continued support and generosity. On the back of our increased collaboration with Glendower’s leadership and staff, and the school community, we are looking forward to continuing to raise significant funds for these great causes!

Thank you, Kiran Bahl and Gersende Stoll GPTA co-Chairs

An Investment in Education

24% of the annual operating expenditure was invested in costs relating to the delivery of the curriculum. This includes resources, transport and the hiring of facilities and services to enhance the educational impact each pupil receives.

Thank you to the teachers and staff for their dedication to each pupil and their commitment to whole child education.

An Investment in People

Glendower Preparatory School’s investment in its staff – salaries and benefits, represented 53% of the annual operating expenditure. Our people make Glendower Preparatory School a special place to learn and are critical to enabling us to deliver an outstanding and rounded education, tailored to each pupil.

An Investment in Infrastructure

In order to provide the highest quality learning environment and support structures, to facilitate a holistic and balanced education, Glendower strives to invest in its facilities and infrastructure.

In 2021 the school purchased an additional property to provide a Nursery and enhanced learning space for all pupils. The result is a fantastic new nursery provision and immersive learning space. The purchase was funded by bank loans which are secured on the School’s freehold properties.

The school surplus of income over operating expenditure is used to service loans. The school currently has loans of £9m; protected, in part, against rising interest rates by a currency SWAP instrument.

Enabling Partnerships and Development

Thanks to one incredibly generous Glendower family, in January 2022 we appointed our first Director of Partnerships and Development, Zoe Baines. Acknowledging that administra tive expenses are a necessary and critical component of any project, this philanthropic family, in discussion with the School, invested in funding a lasting legacy for our school, our Director of Partnerships and Development.

Many of us would prefer to see our philanthropic contributions go directly to a project or activity, rather than to administrative expenses, but this generous investment in skills and re sources has enabled us to launch one of the most exciting programmes in our school’s history.

Since Zoe joined our Glendower community in January, the impact we as a school and school community have been able to achieve has already began to bear fruits and this report is just a snapshot of this.

Together we have started to explore what development in our school will look like in the fu ture. I am now excited to be part of seeing these plans formulated and develop. And I hope you are too.

From the Director of Partnerships and Development

I feel truly privileged to be part of such a forward-thinking community of parents, staff and pu pils looking to develop mutually beneficial partnership opportunities locally that broaden even further the experience of Glendower pupils.

While the Partnerships and Development Programme is still in its infancy at Glendower, I think you will agree, as you read this report that our achievements have been momentous in only a short time.

Our parents, staff and pupils are now meeting and getting to know some incredible people and together we are learning about the inspiring work local organisations are doing to support the diverse needs of people young and old in our local community.

Our first partnership was with Park Walk Primary School and this relationship continues to go from strength to strength. Additionally, we are now developing our relationships and activities with St Teresa’s Care Home, Queensmill School for autistic children, the Kensington and Chel sea Foundation, Brompton Fountain and the children’s ward at Brompton Hospital, Honeypot and more.

After discussion with parents and staff earlier this year, enhancing the number of bursaries avail able at Glendower and a programme of support to accompany this is now a strategic priority for our community. We aim to steadily grow this programme to enable two full fee equivalent bursary recipients in each year to join us at Glendower, and are already making great strides to attract and identify potential bursary pupils. This academic year we have welcomed two new bursary pupils and their families into our community and are steadily growing our philanthropic programme to sustainably support these plans.

Thank you for your continuous support and ideas, please keep them coming. Together we are re-envisioning what a diverse education means for our children and enabling them to grow, learn and develop into well rounded and responsible young women, who are truly part of their local community both now and for the future.

GPTA Successes

An additional £41,313 was raised throughout 2021-2022 by the GPTA through Bake Sales, Uniform Sales, family and class contributions. These funds enabled the GPTA to sup port its core activities including the fantastic Heads Night, the incredible evening lecture series, Teacher’s Gifts, the Year 6 leaving celebrations as well as an upgrade to the library.

In addition, the GPTA enabled £3500 worth of new books to be purchased for the library through the 2021 Book Fair.

£20,632 raised for external charities

Funding for the Bursary Programme aims to support a gradual increase in bursarial support to impact positively on the diversity of the whole school community and broaden every student’s school experience.

Initially Glendower aims to provide one to two bursaries in each year group, aspiring over the next 5-10 years to provide means tested bursary provision for 7% of the school’s student population (approximately 18 students). All bursaries awarded will always be based on the twin criteria of academic merit and family financial circumstances.

Lifting Barriers, Unlocking Potential

Bursaries & Hardship Awards

Financial support through the bursary fund or via hardship awards will always be prioritised to those students already at the school before additional bursary awards are offered to new incoming applicants.

In 2021-22 the school had two bursary recipients on 100% bursaries, both of whom completed their education at Glendower at the end of the 2021-2022 academic year.

In 2022-2023 Glendower will offer two bursary places, funding a further one to two full fee equivalent bursary places each academic year over the next 5-10 years.

“Four years ago, we were living in the Grenfell Tower when tragedy struck. What we learnt from Grenfell is the importance of family and building resilience to ensure that one can deal with challenging and even horrific life changing events. We want to couple that with strong values and a stellar education to give our daughter the tools to make a difference in her life and for those around her, to nation build and be of service.

Although we have no authority over some matters, we can only ensure that we give our daughter our support and empower her to become a positive adult contributing positively to society. Out of this terrible tragedy must come some good and we are certain that Glendower Preparatory School offers this.”

Partnership Activities

Giving back is a way of life at Glendower — it builds community, speaks to our values, and helps students discover what matters in the world. Through the Partnership and Community Programme, students, teachers, administrators, parents and donors work together to build a culture of gratitude that inspires our students to reach higher and do more.

Partnership activities aim to create opportunities to engage with the local community and state primary schools, to learn from sharing diverse experiences and support others to reach their full potential, regardless of their socio-economic circumstances.

Glendower Parents Volunteered to Read with Afghan Children at Park Walk Primary School

Throughout the summer term 2022, a committed group of Glendower parents volunteered to read for a minimum of an hour each week at Park Walk Primary School, supporting Afghan evacuee children in Years 2 and 3 with their reading and English comprehension and development.

Glendower Parents Support Afghan Evacuee Women

Locally

More than 20 Glendower parents and staff spent more than 30 hours providing opportunities for Afghan women to socialise by running a weekly activity programme for more than 25 Afghan evacuee women staying in a hotel local to our school and community. Liaising with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Lead, Glendower parents ran, Monday morning English lessons, Wednesday coffee morning and games, and Friday sewing and knitting club. The experience was truly eye-opening, humbling and a huge amount of fun for all involved.

Giving Back, Forming Bonds

Additionally, Glendower parents bought brand new sewing machines, sewing, knitting and crochet equipment, material and wool to enable these activities to take place. Together parents donated £1000’s worth of new and nearly new essential items to our Afghan neighbours as we welcomed them to our local community.

101 Hours of Parent

Volunteering

As part of this programme, Glendower parents invited 15 Afghan ladies and their young children for a Lebanese brunch locally. For the first time our Afghan friends ventured out of the hotel on mass, prams and all, to enjoy together a women’s brunch.

Additionally, Glendower parents opened up their networks to support the Afghan women as much as possible. As a result of the time spent volunteering and getting to know the Afghan women locally, the parents discovered that one of the women had been a Prosecutor in Afghanistan, defending women who had experienced violence. Through connections and conversations doors were opened and the result, an invitation for our Afghan friend to attend a prestigious event for Women in Law, to mark this year’s International Women’s Day.

What can we expect in 2022 - 2023?

• Increase our School and GPTA charitable fundraising in support of our three school charities and bursaries.

• Enhance student, parent and staff opportunities to engage in partnership and community engagement activities

• Gradually increase the number of bursary recipients throughout the school

• Develop our unique community, culture, and philanthropy

Dedicate your gift to one or more special initiatives to enhance the Glendower School experience for our students and support our effort to reimagine leadership for this generation and generations to come.

Playground Renovation Area of Greatest Need

In 2023 our focus will be on creating a bespoke and stimulating outdoor learning environment that will enable our girls to learn through imaginative play in an exciting space.

Includes critical areas of the school’s operating budget, including technology in the classrooms and professional development, and directly benefits our school, our students, our programmes and our resources.

These stories are a snapshot of some of the Glendower partnership and development activi ties conducted in 2021-2022 and their impact. They highlight just a few of the many ways in which our supporters make a difference to the school and our community every day.

Every donation, large or small, has an impact and we offer our deepest thanks to everyone who offers their time and support.
