Touching Lives

Investing in our community.

This community is at the heart of everything we do, which is why we want to thank you for your recent votes in The McLeod County Chronicle’s “Best of Glencoe Area” contest. This year, we were recognized in a total of ten categories – we’re thankful for your trust and support, as well as the dedication of our staff. These awards mean so much because they come directly from you, the community we care for.

With that spirit in mind, this issue of Touching Lives highlights just a few ways we are continuing to invest in our community and serve you close to home. On page six, you’ll learn about our new sports medicine partnership with Glencoe-Silver Lake Schools. Through the expertise of our certified athletic trainer, Hailey Phelps, MAT, LAT, ATC, we’re proud to help student athletes stay safe, recover from injuries, and build strong foundations for lifelong health.

On pages eight and nine, we’re excited to share details about our brand-new lung cancer screening service – an important tool in detecting cancer early, when it is most treatable. By offering this service locally, we hope to make early detection more accessible and provide peace of mind for patients who may be at risk.

We’re also introducing you to LeRoy Becker, who recently underwent a total knee replacement with our surgical team this summer. Hear from LeRoy on how his surgery and physical therapy helped him get back on the golf course on page 10.

Finally, as the chilly (and sometimes icy) Minnesota winter settles in, our providers offer practical tips for staying well during the colder months on pages 18 and 19.

With gratitude,

JOY IN FULL SWING

Since its unveiling in August, the new wheelchair-accessible swing glider at GlenFields Living with Care has quickly become a favorite spot for residents.

Located in our courtyard, the swing has a bench seat and a ramp to make it easily accessible for residents using wheelchairs. With gentle body movement or use of a handle to start swinging, residents can glide back and forth with the help of staff, family members, or friends. A canopy overhead provides shade, making it a welcoming place to enjoy the outdoors.

The swing offers more than a fun activity. It’s a way for residents to feel a breeze on their face, enjoy the outdoors, and revel in a freeing moment. Being together around the swing also creates opportunities for connection and laughter.

This project was made possible by the generosity of the Glencoe Regional Health Foundation and its donors. Their support has turned an idea into a space that brings joy and enrichment to the daily lives of residents, who came up with the idea to add the wheelchair-accessible swing to our existing courtyard.

It’s not about the money. It’s about what the money can do. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen,” said Liz.

“Here’s what we’ve noticed already. The project has brought: smiles and fun, relaxation and deep breaths, giggles with grandkids and great grandkids, meaningful conversations with loved ones, and feelings of being a kid again. That’s what the money can do and has done,” said Glencoe Regional Health Foundation Director Liz Cheney, CFRE

Residents have already shared how much they enjoy the swing. Our resident, Roger, looks forward to time spent on the swing with his wife, family, and our volunteers.

“It’s fun going on the swing,” said Roger. “I like spending time outside.”

Our team in GlenFields love seeing the excitement and smiles it inspires.

The swing has created a space for residents to experience joy, fresh air, and meaningful moments with family and friends – small moments that make a big difference,” said Chief Senior Services Officer Julie Schmidt.

This space will continue to bring laughter, connection, and joyful moments for many seasons to come. The swing is a reminder that joy can be found in simple pleasures and that inclusive spaces can bring people together.

Anna Stelter, PA-C Hospitalist Team

I believe patient education is the cornerstone of health and helping people improve their lives,” said Anna. “This can empower patients to understand their overall health and make lasting improvements.”

Anna is a physician assistant joining our hospitalist team, seeing patients of all ages who are admitted to our swing bed and acute care units. She was drawn to the medical field because of her passion to help others in a meaningful way - serving as a positive and supportive guide through tough days and difficult medical diagnoses for patients.

“The best part of my job is getting to help patients feel better and progress to the point where they are excited and confident to get back home as a stronger and healthier version of themselves,” said Anna.

Anna chose to join our team because she wanted to serve the community she lives in through providing high quality healthcare to improve patients’ lives.

After hours

Anna lives on a farm outside of Glencoe with her husband, daughter, and their dog. They enjoy spending time together outdoors, walking, gardening, doing house and farm projects, and being at the lake.

“Spending quality time with my family and friends is what fills my cup the most,” said Anna.

Hailey Phelps, MAT, LAT, ATC

Sports Medicine

The atmosphere at GRH is nurturing and honest,” said Hailey.
“I could tell right away that each provider is committed and passionate about caring for and helping others.”

Hailey is a licensed and certified athletic trainer caring for student-athletes at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School. Driven by her passion for helping others, Hailey has a desire to educate people about their health. Hailey chose athletic training specifically because of her own experience growing up in sports without access to an athletic trainer — an absence that highlighted the critical need for this role in supporting young athletes.

“The most rewarding part of my job is seeing patients return to the activities they love after dedicating so much effort to their recovery,” said Hailey. “I’m especially passionate about making

a meaningful impact in the lives of athletes and building strong, lasting relationships along the way.”

Hailey was drawn to GRH because of the supportive, welcoming environment on our Rehabilitation Services team.

After hours

Originally from a small town in western Iowa, Hailey enjoys staying active outdoors through hunting and fishing. She also loves gardening, cooking, reading, and spending time with friends and family.

A WINNING PARTNERSHIP e

for Student-Athletes

Glencoe Regional Health (GRH) and Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Public Schools have joined forces to bring a new level of sports medicine care to student-athletes. This partnership ensures that students not only have support at practices and games, but also a trusted first point of contact for injuries and questions. It reflects the shared commitment of both organizations to keeping young athletes safe, healthy, and performing at their best.

At the center of the program is athletic trainer, Hailey Phelps, MAT, LAT, ATC, who spends most of her time at the school. Whether it’s a sprained ankle at practice or a question about recovery, students know they can come to her first. She provides immediate care and

guidance, and when needed, works hand-in-hand with other providers to connect athletes to specialized treatment. Hailey works closely with GSL coaches to monitor practices, ensure field and weather conditions are safe for activity, and provide updates on athlete’s injuries

and return-to-play timelines. When an athlete returns after an injury, Hailey also provides athletes and coaches with modification recommendations, to ensure they continue healing and don’t re-stress an injury.

“I injured my knee in the first game of the season, and Hailey has helped me stay consistent with my physical therapy and reduce my pain,” said Jackson, a GSL football player.

My role is about more than treating injuries. I focus on preventing problems, providing care when problems do happen, and guiding athletes safely back to their sport,” said Hailey. “What excites me most about this partnership is building relationships with the athletes and supporting them both on and off the field. I want them to understand that their health matters not just for high school sports, but for everything they’ll do in the future.”

“It’s nice having Hailey as our athletic trainer because we can focus on the game, knowing someone’s here to help keep us from getting hurt and take care of us if we do,” said Nehemiah, a GSL football player.

“I keep an open door policy so athletes feel comfortable reporting any minor injuries early on, which prevents existing injuries from worsening,” said Hailey. “I also educate athletes on proper techniques, nutrition tips, and recovery guidance.”

Hailey provides coverage at practices and games, giving immediate trained access to evaluate injuries, provide first aid care, and assist in emergency response. This on-site presence ensures injuries are treated as soon as possible, keeping student-athletes safe and healthy.

“Being named the official athletic training and sports medicine provider for GSL is a tremendous honor for Glencoe Regional Health,” said Director of Rehabilitation Services Clark Christianson, PT, ScD, COMT. “It reflects years of preparation and our commitment to supporting local youth, promoting health and wellness, and serving as a trusted healthcare partner in our community. This partnership gives us the chance to directly support student-athletes by helping them stay healthy, safe, and ready to compete.”

For coaches, having a dedicated athletic trainer on-site gives peace of mind. They can focus on training and strategy, knowing injuries are being handled by a trained professional. For students, it means having someone to turn to every day, not just when an injury occurs, but whenever guidance, reassurance, or help with recovery is needed.

“This collaboration really lifts a burden off our coaching staff when it comes to injury management,” said Dean Schwirtz, Glencoe-Silver Lake Athletic Director. “Our coaches can stay focused on training and game strategy, knowing there’s a qualified healthcare professional on-site to handle injuries. It also improves communication between coaches, trainers, and parents, which makes our entire athletic program more coordinated and efficient.”

It’s a partnership that supports not only athletic performance, but also academic success and long-term health and wellness of the community we both serve – a winning combination.

As an athletic trainer, Hailey offers a full range of services including:

• Injury and illness prevention

• Emergency response and concussion management, including ImPACT testing

• Therapeutic rehabilitation

• Referrals for continued care at Glencoe Regional Health

Comprehensive services supported by our expert sports medicine providers include:

• Sports-focused physical therapy

Early Detection Saves Lives: Lung Cancer Screening N ow Available

We’re excited to bring a brand new service to our community: low-dose CT scans for lung cancer screening. Until recently, patients had to travel out of town for screening. Today, it can be done in Glencoe, with a simple process that’s quick, comfortable, and close to home.

“This is exciting for us because it allows patients to stay local for care they would otherwise have to travel for,” said Tonya Vandermillen, Director of Imaging Services. “More importantly, it gives us the chance to detect lung cancer earlier, when it’s more treatable. If we can catch it at an early stage, we may be able to save lives – and that’s what makes this service so meaningful.”

From the moment you walk through our doors, our team will guide you every step of the way. After checking in at

the front desk of the hospital, you’ll head down to Medical Imaging, where a technologist will walk you through a short questionnaire which confirms that the screening is right for you. To qualify, patients need to be between 50 and 80 years old, have a smoking history of 20 packs a year or more on average, and be a current smoker or someone who has quit within the last 15 years.

The scan itself is easy. You’ll lie comfortably on your back, place your arms above your head, and follow simple breathing instructions as the CT machine does its work. In about five minutes, the scan is complete. From start to finish, the whole appointment usually takes around 15 minutes.

Once the scan is done, the images are reviewed by a boardcertified radiologist and then sent to your primary care provider, who will share your results with you. Depending on what’s found, you may be asked to return for another scan in a few months or simply come back each year for your annual screening.

Because this test requires a referral, the first step is to talk with your primary care provider. Once the order is placed, scheduling is quick – sometimes even within a day, depending on your insurance.

To schedule an appointment with your primary care provider, call us at 320-864-7816, or learn more about lung cancer screening at glencoehealth.org/lung-cancer-screening.

Our friendly medical imaging team, including Alane and Hannah, are here to make your screening process comfortable and seamless.

Patients now have the option to receive low-dose CT scans for lung cancer screening right in

“These

screenings offer our patients early detection and potentially life-saving care,” said Tonya. “It’s one

right here at home.”

A Strong Step Forward

LeRoy’s Journey to a Pain-Free Knee

On a sunny afternoon in Hutchinson, you’ll likely find LeRoy Becker tending to his lawn or planning his next round of golf. But not long ago, even simple activities like mowing the grass or going for a walk left him struggling with knee pain.

After he recovered from his total knee replacement, LeRoy was excited to get back out on the green.
“It feels good to get back out there and swing the club again,” said LeRoy. “I don’t need to play a perfect game, but being able to enjoy the day – that’s plenty for me.”

“I had my left knee replaced about ten years ago, and it helped,” said LeRoy. “But my right knee just kept getting worse. I kept putting it off, but after a while, I realized I couldn’t ignore it anymore.”

LeRoy decided it was time to take the next steps toward relief. He made an appointment with his primary care provider, Connor Hedstrom, DO, who referred him to see orthopedic surgeon Matthew Copple, DO, FAAOS Dr. Copple performed LeRoy’s total knee replacement in June of this year, and the experience exceeded LeRoy’s expectations.

“I felt at ease once I met with Dr. Copple and his team,” said LeRoy. “They explained everything well, and answered all of my questions. When the day of my surgery arrived, I knew I was in good hands.”

Helping patients like LeRoy reclaim their lives and return to the activities they love is what makes our surgical team’s work rewarding.

“Our goal is to restore function and relieve pain so patients can fully enjoy life again,” Dr. Copple said. “Seeing LeRoy

recover so well is exactly why we do what we do.”

The procedure went more smoothly than LeRoy expected. “Compared to my first knee replacement years ago, this one felt easier,” said LeRoy. “It just felt right. Everything did. I got out of physical therapy fast and easily. Dr. Copple did a great job – I was very happy with it.”

After his surgery, LeRoy began working with physical therapist Alyssa Mohr, PT, DPT. According to LeRoy, knowing how positively physical therapy impacted his recovery during his previous surgery helped him go confidently into his recovery this time.

“Physical therapy went better than I expected this time too,” he said. “I knew what I needed to do to get stronger. Alyssa knew how to push me just enough without making it overwhelming. We had some laughs along the way, too.”

Today, LeRoy is back to his regular activities – walking with his wife, taking care of his lawn, and even returning to the golf course.

Members of our surgery team like Lexi, RN, provided care to LeRoy during his total knee replacement. According to LeRoy, the warm, compassionate care he received from our team made all the difference in his recovery.
Alyssa Mohr, PT, DPT

A Strong Step Forward LeRoy’s Journey to a Pain-Free Knee

What stood out most to LeRoy wasn’t just the success of his surgery, but the way he was treated throughout his journey.

LeRoy shared his gratitude in a special way that left an impact on our staff. After his surgery, he sent a generous meat and cheese tray to our surgical team.

“I wanted them to know how much I appreciated them and the work they’ve done for me, because everything went so well,” said LeRoy. “I noticed how hard they worked, and I wanted to thank them for doing a good job.”

According to Stephanie Halverson, Director of Perioperative Services, LeRoy’s thoughtful gift made an impact on our staff.

“It was such a kind gesture,” she said. “Our team was touched by LeRoy’s generosity, but truly the honor was ours to care for him. Moments like this are why we serve our community.”

“What really impressed me was how friendly and welcoming everyone was,” he said. “From the nurses to my physical therapist, everybody treated me with kindness, which made it easier to ask questions along the way. It wasn’t just about the surgery – it was the way they cared about me as a person.”

For those hesitant to take the next steps toward surgery, Dr. Copple emphasized that they don’t have to face it alone.

“Many patients wait years before deciding on surgery, but the sooner you address the problem, the sooner you can get back to enjoying life. We’re here to walk with you every step of the way,” said Dr. Copple.

LeRoy agrees.

“If you’re in pain, don’t wait as long as I did,” he said. “The sooner you take care of it, the sooner you can get back to living your life.”

If you or a loved one are experiencing pain like LeRoy, call us at 320-864-7816 to make an appointment, or visit our website to learn more: glencoehealth.org/orthopedics

LeRoy and his wife, Lisa, enjoy getting back out on the golf course, as well as going for walks, now that he’s recovered.

Smooth Surgery, Gentle Recovery

Our anesthesia team partners with our surgeons to ensure your procedure is as smooth and comfortable as possible. At GRH, we offer several types of regional anesthesia, called a block, to help manage pain after surgery. For some procedures, we offer abdominal and thoracic plane blocks. These blocks can provide relief for up to 72 hours, often helping patients need fewer opioid pain medications, experience less nausea, and move around sooner – all of which support a faster, more comfortable recovery.

Usually given after a patient goes to sleep, these blocks involve a series of 2 – 6 pencil-point sized injections that aim to numb the skin and muscles around incision sites. They’re often used for procedures like hernia repair, appendectomy, gall bladder removal, hysterectomy, breast surgery, Cesarean deliveries, and more.

for the Holidays

Emily Thalmann, Sanken-Hatz Scholarship recipient.

Local students hope to pursue their dreams of becoming trusted healthcare professionals. Future Physical Therapist Emily Thalmann of Plato is on her way, after receiving seven scholarship awards from the Foundation, along with the encouragement to pursue knowledge and excellence.

With hope, anything is possible.

“Having grown up in the area, I have strong ties to the Glencoe community. And I have had the honor of having multiple connections to the Glencoe Regional Health Rehab Services Department — first as a patient receiving care, then as a student job shadow, and most recently completing my first clinical rotation. The entire team has been incredibly supportive, kind, patient, and encouraging, providing me with an excellent learning environment filled with countless opportunities to grow,” said Emily.

Emily was one of 27 students receiving scholarship support – and hope – this year.

GlenFields Living with Care residents hoped for a wheelchair-accessible swing to share meaningful moments with loved

ones and feel a breeze on their face. We raised over $17,000 to make it happen, delivering smiles, giggles, and hope. Read more on pages two and three.

And our community hoped for more spaces to stay active and connected. We helped enhance Oscar Olson Sunrise Park in Glencoe by supporting the dog park and pickleball court projects, items on a wish list in the City of Glencoe’s Comprehensive Plan.

If our work gives you hope, we invite you to be part of our Hope for the Holidays campaign with a tax-deductible gift. The most important thing you can give someone else is hope.

Join us with your generous heart before December 31, 2025.

Here are our hopes for next year:

Prairie Trail – help us resurface this beloved community asset and support movement and connection in our community. Total cost is estimated at $15,000, and your gift of $150 resurfaces approximately 55 feet of our trail.

Patient Monitoring Equipment – help purchase life-saving equipment that monitors and tracks patient vital signs in the Hospital and Emergency Department. We need 31 machines, and the Foundation has raised enough to purchase six, thanks to a partnership with Otto Bremer Trust and its Community Responsive Fund. It will take over $100,000 to purchase the remaining machines needed.

Scholarships – help support a student like Emily for one semester with a gift of $500. Or, name your own scholarship with a gift of $2,500.

In Memory

Mary Ott, a founding board member of Glencoe Regional Health Foundation, humbly served our organization for over 30 years.

She was passionate, determined, and smart. During her time on our Board of Directors, we launched the Sanken-Hatz Scholarship Program that has supported hundreds of local students, purchased Telestroke Equipment for the Emergency Department, fully funded the creation of the Wound Center, developed and supported Prairie Trail around the Glencoe campus, and so much more.

Mary passed away unexpectedly on July 30, 2025, and will be missed by all who knew her. The Foundation’s Board of Directors is honoring Mary and her incredible service with a name plate on our River of Life display and a scholarship award in her name in 2026.

Winter Wellness

Simple Steps to Stay Healthy and Bright

When the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, it can feel harder to stay energized and upbeat. But winter brings its own opportunities for joy, movement, and wellness. Our providers are sharing their favorite ways to stay physically and mentally well throughout the chillier winter season in Minnesota, from staying active to eating nourishing foods, to keeping safety in mind when it’s icy underfoot.

Connor Hedstrom, DO

Family Medicine

Keeping a steady sleep routine is important during the winter months. Even with the darker evenings and longer nights, it’s important to try to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time each day. This can help your routine, even with changes in daylight hours.

When it gets to be slippery outdoors with snow, ice, and sleet, my advice is to always slow down and be aware of your surroundings. Take short, shuffling steps, and keep your hands free while walking. Staying active and strong helps prevent falls, so getting in regular exercise is very important, especially as we get older.

Jake Traxler, MD

Family Medicine

Getting outside whenever you can helps improve your mood. There have been studies that a phototherapy box (such as a Happy Light) has been helpful for mood if you are not able to get outside.

I like to stay active during the winter months by cross-country skiing at Three Rivers Park, occasionally Baylor Park, and even to work if the conditions permit. I love ice skating with my kids at the outdoor ice rink, and pulling them around the house on the sled, as well. I enjoy running all year round, as the snow is beautiful to run in.

Abby Evans, DNP, APRN, CNP

Family Medicine and Urology

I try to exercise regularly during the winter months to keep my mood lifted. There are countless free exercise classes on YouTube that do not require equipment, and are appropriate for different fitness levels. My go-to food to stay healthy during the winter months is soup. Chicken noodle and wild rice are two of my favorites, but I also enjoy chili with cornbread as another go-to winter meal. You can add all sorts of vegetables to your soup recipes for added nutrients.

Community Health Needs Assessment

Priority Areas Mental Health and Obesity

Every three years, GRH conducts a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) and adopts an implementation strategy to meet the community health needs as identified.

The most recent CHNA was completed in 2022, and will be completed again and published in December 2025.

Through this work and the review of available data, priority areas emerged. Similar to our past CHNAs, the highest-priority health needs for our

community were identified as mental health and obesity. Responding effectively to the community’s mental health needs will require a more open dialogue about mental health, as well as expanding resources to assist individuals with short-term and longterm mental health needs. Responding to obesity trends will call for us to positively impact individual behavioral choices related to healthy eating and active living.

You can review our current and past CHNA reports on our website at glencoehealth.org/community-health-needs-assessment. These requirements are part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA).
